Matthew

1And after six days Jesus taketh Peter, and James, and John his brother, and doth bring them up to a high mount by themselves,

2and he was transfigured before them, and his face shone as the sun, and his garments did become white as the light,

3and lo, appear to them did Moses and Elijah, talking together with him.

4And Peter answering said to Jesus, 'Sir, it is good to us to be here; if thou wilt, we may make here three booths — for thee one, and for Moses one, and one for Elijah.'

5While he is yet speaking, lo, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and lo, a voice out of the cloud, saying, 'This is My Son, — the Beloved, in whom I did delight; hear him.'

6And the disciples having heard, did fall upon their face, and were exceedingly afraid,

7and Jesus having come near, touched them, and said, 'Rise, be not afraid,'

8and having lifted up their eyes, they saw no one, except Jesus only.

9And as they are coming down from the mount, Jesus charged them, saying, 'Say to no one the vision, till the Son of Man out of the dead may rise.'

10And his disciples questioned him, saying, 'Why then do the scribes say that Elijah it behoveth to come first?'

11And Jesus answering said to them, 'Elijah doth indeed come first, and shall restore all things,

12and I say to you — Elijah did already come, and they did not know him, but did with him whatever they would, so also the Son of Man is about to suffer by them.'

13Then understood the disciples that concerning John the Baptist he spake to them.

14And when they came unto the multitude, there came to him a man, kneeling down to him,

15and saying, 'Sir, deal kindly with my son, for he is lunatic, and doth suffer miserably, for often he doth fall into the fire, and often into the water,

16and I brought him near to thy disciples, and they were not able to heal him.'

17And Jesus answering said, 'O generation, unstedfast and perverse, till when shall I be with you? till when shall I bear you? bring him to me hither;'

18and Jesus rebuked him, and the demon went out of him, and the lad was healed from that hour.

19Then the disciples having come to Jesus by himself, said, 'Wherefore were we not able to cast him out?'

20And Jesus said to them, 'Through your want of faith; for verily I say to you, if ye may have faith as a grain of mustard, ye shall say to this mount, Remove hence to yonder place, and it shall remove, and nothing shall be impossible to you,

21and this kind doth not go forth except in prayer and fasting.'

22And while they are living in Galilee, Jesus said to them, 'The Son of Man is about to be delivered up to the hands of men,

23and they shall kill him, and the third day he shall rise,' and they were exceeding sorry.

24And they having come to Capernaum, those receiving the didrachms came near to Peter, and said, 'Your teacher — doth he not pay the didrachms?' He saith, 'Yes.'

25And when he came into the house, Jesus anticipated him, saying, 'What thinkest thou, Simon? the kings of the earth — from whom do they receive custom or poll-tax? from their sons or from the strangers?'

26Peter saith to him, 'From the strangers.' Jesus said to him, 'Then are the sons free;

27but, that we may not cause them to stumble, having gone to the sea, cast a hook, and the fish that hath come up first take thou up, and having opened its mouth, thou shalt find a stater, that having taken, give to them for me and thee.'

Chúa Hóa Hình

1Sáu ngày sau, Chúa Giê-xu đem riêng Phi-e-rơ, Gia-cơ, và Giăng, em Gia-cơ lên một ngọn núi cao.

2Chúa hóa hình ngay trước mặt họ, gương mặt Chúa sáng rực như mặt trời, áo Ngài trắng như ánh sáng.

3Thình lình Môi-se và Ê-li hiện ra thưa chuyện với Chúa Giê-xu.

4Phi-e-rơ buột miệng: “Thưa Chúa, ở đây thật tuyệt! Nếu Chúa muốn, con sẽ dựng ba chiếc lều cho Chúa, Môi-se và Ê-li.”

5Khi Phi-e-rơ đang nói, một đám mây sáng chói bao phủ mọi người, và từ trong mây có tiếng phán: “Đây là Con yêu dấu của Ta, làm hài lòng Ta hoàn toàn! Mọi người phải nghe lời Con.”

6Các môn đệ vô cùng kinh hãi, quỳ sấp mặt xuống đất.

7Chúa Giê-xu đến bên cạnh sờ họ, phán: “Đứng dậy, đừng sợ hãi.”

8Họ nhìn lên, chỉ còn thấy một mình Chúa Giê-xu.

9Lúc xuống núi, Chúa dặn họ: “Đừng thuật lại cho ai những việc các con vừa thấy, cho đến khi Con Người từ cõi chết sống lại.”

10Các môn đệ hỏi: “Sao các thầy dạy luật quả quyết Ê-li phải đến trước Đấng Mết-si-a?”

11Chúa Giê-xu đáp: “Ê-li đến trước để chuẩn bị mọi việc.

12Nhưng Ta phán với các con, Ê-li đã đến rồi, nhưng chẳng ai nhìn nhận, lại còn bị nhiều người bạc đãi. Chính Con Người cũng sẽ chịu đau khổ dưới tay những người ấy.”

13Các môn đệ hiểu Chúa đang nói với họ về Giăng Báp-tít.

Chúa Giê-xu Chữa Cậu Bé Bị Quỷ Ám

14Dưới chân núi, một đoàn dân đông đang chờ đợi Chúa. Một người bước tới, quỳ xuống trước mặt Ngài:

15“Thưa Chúa, xin thương xót con trai tôi vì nó bị điên loạn, thường bị ngã vào lửa và rơi xuống nước, khốn khổ lắm!

16Tôi đã mang đến cho các môn đệ Chúa, nhưng họ không chữa được.”

17Chúa Giê-xu trách: “Những người ngoan cố hoài nghi kia, Ta phải ở với các anh bao lâu nữa? Phải chịu đựng các anh cho đến bao giờ? Đem ngay đứa bé lại đây!”

18Chúa quở trách quỷ. Quỷ liền ra khỏi đứa bé. Từ giờ đó, đứa bé được lành.

19Các môn đệ hỏi riêng Chúa Giê-xu: “Sao chúng con không đuổi quỷ ấy được?”

20Chúa Giê-xu đáp: “Vì đức tin các con quá kém cỏi. Với đức tin bằng hạt cải, các con có thể bảo hòn núi này: ‘Dời đi chỗ khác,’ nó sẽ đi ngay. Chẳng có việc gì các con không làm được.

21Nếu không cầu nguyện và kiêng ăn, các con không thể đuổi thứ quỷ này được.”

Chúa Giê-xu Lại Báo Trước về Sự Chết của Ngài

22Một hôm, ở xứ Ga-li-lê, Chúa Giê-xu phán với các môn đệ: “Con Người sẽ bị phản bội, nộp vào tay người ta,

23họ sẽ giết Ngài, nhưng ba ngày sau, Ngài sẽ sống lại.” Và các môn đệ buồn bã lắm.

Thuế Đền Thờ

24Về đến thành Ca-bê-na-um, Phi-e-rơ bị các nhân viên thu thuế Đền Thờ gạn hỏi: “Thầy của anh có đóng thuế Đền Thờ không?”

25Phi-e-rơ đáp: “Có chứ!” Rồi ông đi vào nhà. Nhưng vừa định thưa chuyện với Chúa, thì Ngài đã hỏi trước: “Con nghĩ sao, Phi-e-rơ? Các vua chúa đánh thuế con cái trong nhà hay người ngoài?”

26Phi-e-rơ thưa: “Người ngoài!” Chúa Giê-xu phán: “Vậy con cái trong nhà khỏi đóng thuế!

27Nhưng chúng ta không muốn để người ta phiền lòng, bây giờ con hãy ra biển câu cá. Được con cá đầu tiên, con banh miệng nó sẽ thấy một đồng bạc. Con lấy đồng bạc đó đem đóng thuế cho Ta với con.”
