1 Samuel

1Now it happened on a day that Jonathan the son of Saul said to the young man who bore his armour, “Come! Let’s go over to the Philistines’ garrison that is on the other side.” But he didn’t tell his father.

2Saul stayed in the uttermost part of Gibeah under the pomegranate tree which is in Migron; and the people who were with him were about six hundred men,

3including Ahijah the son of Ahitub, Ichabod’s brother, the son of Phinehas, the son of Eli the priest of the LORD in Shiloh, wearing an ephod. The people didn’t know that Jonathan was gone.

4Between the passes, by which Jonathan sought to go over to the Philistines’ garrison, there was a rocky crag on the one side and a rocky crag on the other side; and the name of the one was Bozez, and the name of the other Seneh.

5The one crag rose up on the north in front of Michmash, and the other on the south in front of Geba.

6Jonathan said to the young man who bore his armour, “Come! Let’s go over to the garrison of these uncircumcised. It may be that the LORD will work for us, for there is no restraint on the LORD to save by many or by few.”

7His armour bearer said to him, “Do all that is in your heart. Go, and behold, I am with you according to your heart.”

8Then Jonathan said, “Behold, we will pass over to the men, and we will reveal ourselves to them.

9If they say this to us, ‘Wait until we come to you!’ then we will stand still in our place and will not go up to them.

10But if they say this, ‘Come up to us!’ then we will go up, for the LORD has delivered them into our hand. This shall be the sign to us.”

11Both of them revealed themselves to the garrison of the Philistines; and the Philistines said, “Behold, the Hebrews are coming out of the holes where they had hidden themselves!”

12The men of the garrison answered Jonathan and his armour bearer, and said, “Come up to us, and we will show you something!” Jonathan said to his armour bearer, “Come up after me, for the LORD has delivered them into the hand of Israel.”

13Jonathan climbed up on his hands and on his feet, and his armour bearer after him, and they fell before Jonathan; and his armour bearer killed them after him.

14That first slaughter, which Jonathan and his armour bearer made, was about twenty men, within as it were half a furrow’s length in an acre of land.

15There was a trembling in the camp, in the field, and amongst all the people; the garrison and the raiders also trembled; and the earth quaked, so there was an exceedingly great trembling.

16The watchmen of Saul in Gibeah of Benjamin looked; and behold, the multitude melted away and scattered.

17Then Saul said to the people who were with him, “Count now, and see who is missing from us.” When they had counted, behold, Jonathan and his armour bearer were not there.

18Saul said to Ahijah, “Bring God’s ark here.” For God’s ark was with the children of Israel at that time.

19While Saul talked to the priest, the tumult that was in the camp of the Philistines went on and increased; and Saul said to the priest, “Withdraw your hand!”

20Saul and all the people who were with him were gathered together, and came to the battle; and behold, they were all striking each other with their swords in very great confusion.

21Now the Hebrews who were with the Philistines before and who went up with them into the camp from all around, even they also turned to be with the Israelites who were with Saul and Jonathan.

22Likewise all the men of Israel who had hidden themselves in the hill country of Ephraim, when they heard that the Philistines fled, even they also followed hard after them in the battle.

23So the LORD saved Israel that day; and the battle passed over by Beth Aven.

24The men of Israel were distressed that day; for Saul had adjured the people, saying, “Cursed is the man who eats any food until it is evening, and I am avenged of my enemies.” So none of the people tasted food.

25All the people came into the forest; and there was honey on the ground.

26When the people had come to the forest, behold, honey was dripping, but no one put his hand to his mouth, for the people feared the oath.

27But Jonathan didn’t hear when his father commanded the people with the oath. Therefore he put out the end of the rod that was in his hand and dipped it in the honeycomb, and put his hand to his mouth; and his eyes brightened.

28Then one of the people answered, and said, “Your father directly commanded the people with an oath, saying, ‘Cursed is the man who eats food today.’” So the people were faint.

29Then Jonathan said, “My father has troubled the land. Please look how my eyes have brightened because I tasted a little of this honey.

30How much more, if perhaps the people had eaten freely today of the plunder of their enemies which they found? For now there has been no great slaughter amongst the Philistines.”

31They struck the Philistines that day from Michmash to Aijalon. The people were very faint;

32and the people pounced on the plunder, and took sheep, cattle, and calves, and killed them on the ground; and the people ate them with the blood.

33Then they told Saul, saying, “Behold, the people are sinning against the LORD, in that they eat meat with the blood.” He said, “You have dealt treacherously. Roll a large stone to me today!”

34Saul said, “Disperse yourselves amongst the people, and tell them, ‘Every man bring me here his ox, and every man his sheep, and kill them here, and eat; and don’t sin against the LORD in eating meat with the blood.’” All the people brought every man his ox with him that night, and killed them there.

35Saul built an altar to the LORD. This was the first altar that he built to the LORD.

36Saul said, “Let’s go down after the Philistines by night, and take plunder amongst them until the morning light. Let’s not leave a man of them.” They said, “Do whatever seems good to you.” Then the priest said, “Let’s draw near here to God.”

37Saul asked counsel of God: “Shall I go down after the Philistines? Will you deliver them into the hand of Israel?” But he didn’t answer him that day.

38Saul said, “Draw near here, all you chiefs of the people, and know and see in whom this sin has been today.

39For as the LORD lives, who saves Israel, though it is in Jonathan my son, he shall surely die.” But there was not a man amongst all the people who answered him.

40Then he said to all Israel, “You be on one side, and I and Jonathan my son will be on the other side.” The people said to Saul, “Do what seems good to you.”

41Therefore Saul said to the LORD, the God of Israel, “Show the right.” Jonathan and Saul were chosen, but the people escaped.

42Saul said, “Cast lots between me and Jonathan my son.” Jonathan was selected.

43Then Saul said to Jonathan, “Tell me what you have done!” Jonathan told him, and said, “I certainly did taste a little honey with the end of the rod that was in my hand; and behold, I must die.”

44Saul said, “God do so and more also; for you shall surely die, Jonathan.”

45The people said to Saul, “Shall Jonathan die, who has worked this great salvation in Israel? Far from it! As the LORD lives, there shall not one hair of his head fall to the ground, for he has worked with God today!” So the people rescued Jonathan, so he didn’t die.

46Then Saul went up from following the Philistines; and the Philistines went to their own place.

47Now when Saul had taken the kingdom over Israel, he fought against all his enemies on every side: against Moab, and against the children of Ammon, and against Edom, and against the kings of Zobah, and against the Philistines. Wherever he turned himself, he defeated them.

48He did valiantly and struck the Amalekites, and delivered Israel out of the hands of those who plundered them.

49Now the sons of Saul were Jonathan, Ishvi, and Malchishua; and the names of his two daughters were these: the name of the firstborn Merab, and the name of the younger Michal.

50The name of Saul’s wife was Ahinoam the daughter of Ahimaaz. The name of the captain of his army was Abner the son of Ner, Saul’s uncle.

51Kish was the father of Saul, and Ner the father of Abner was the son of Abiel.

52There was severe war against the Philistines all the days of Saul; and when Saul saw any mighty man or any valiant man, he took him into his service.

1Một hôm, ông Giô-na-than, con vua Sa-un, bảo người hầu cận : “Nào đi, ta sang đồn người Phi-li-tinh ở bên kia.” Nhưng ông không báo cho cha ông biết.

2Vua Sa-un bấy giờ đang ngồi ở ranh giới Ghíp-a, dưới cây lựu ở Mích-rôn, và đám quân binh đang ở với vua khoảng sáu trăm người.

3Ông A-khi-gia, con ông A-khi-túp, lúc ấy mang ê-phốt ; ông A-khi-túp là anh ông I-kha-vốt ; ông I-kha-vốt là con ông Pin-khát ; ông Pin-khát là con ông Ê-li, tư tế của ĐỨC CHÚA ở Si-lô. Quân binh không biết là ông Giô-na-than đã đi.

4Trên những ải mà ông Giô-na-than tìm cách vượt qua để tới đồn Phi-li-tinh, có hai đỉnh đá nhọn, một đỉnh bên này, một đỉnh bên kia ; một đỉnh tên là Bô-xét, một đỉnh tên là Xen-ne ;

5một đỉnh đứng phía bắc, đối diện với Mích-mát, một đỉnh đứng phía nam, đối diện với Ghe-va.

6Ông Giô-na-than bảo người hầu cận : “Nào ta sang phía đồn bọn không cắt bì kia. Biết đâu ĐỨC CHÚA sẽ hành động giúp ta, vì không gì ngăn cản ĐỨC CHÚA cứu, dù số người nhiều hay ít.”

7Người hầu cận nói : “Ông nghĩ gì trong lòng thì hãy làm như vậy. Ông cứ đi, tôi đây xin một lòng theo ông.”

8Ông Giô-na-than nói : “Này ta sang phía bọn người ấy, và sẽ để chúng thấy ta.

9Nếu chúng bảo : ‘Đứng lại ! Đợi chúng tao đến chỗ chúng mày đã’, thì ta sẽ đứng tại chỗ và sẽ không lên phía chúng.

10Nhưng nếu chúng bảo : ‘Lên đây với chúng tao !’, thì ta sẽ lên, vì ĐỨC CHÚA đã trao chúng vào tay ta. Đó là dấu hiệu cho ta.”

11Vậy cả hai người để đồn Phi-li-tinh thấy mình. Người Phi-li-tinh nói : “Kìa bọn Híp-ri đang chui ra khỏi hang hốc chúng trốn.”

12Những người trong đồn nói với ông Giô-na-than và người hầu cận : “Lên đây với chúng tao, chúng tao sẽ cho chúng mày biết tay !” Ông Giô-na-than nói với người hầu cận : “Hãy lên theo tôi, vì ĐỨC CHÚA đã trao chúng vào tay Ít-ra-en.”

13Ông Giô-na-than dùng cả tay cả chân mà leo lên, còn người hầu cận thì theo sau. Chúng ngã gục trước mặt ông Giô-na-than, và người hầu cận đằng sau ông kết liễu đời chúng.

14Đòn đầu tiên mà ông Giô-na-than và người hầu cận giáng xuống, đã giết chừng hai mươi người, trên diện tích bằng nửa luống cày của một sào đất.

15Sự kinh hãi lan rộng khắp nơi : trong trại, ngoài đồng và trong toàn dân. Đồn binh và đạo quân tiễu trừ cũng kinh hãi. Đất rung chuyển và đó là một sự kinh hãi Thiên Chúa gieo xuống.

16Lính canh của vua Sa-un tại Ghíp-a thuộc Ben-gia-min quan sát và thấy đám đông chạy tán loạn.

18Vua Sa-un nói với ông A-khi-gia : “Hãy đem Hòm Bia Thiên Chúa lại gần”, vì hồi ấy Hòm Bia Thiên Chúa ở với con cái Ít-ra-en.

19Đang khi vua Sa-un nói với tư tế thì trại Phi-li-tinh mỗi lúc một thêm náo động. Vua Sa-un nói với tư tế : “Rút tay lại !”

20Vua Sa-un và tất cả quân binh đang ở với vua tập hợp lại và ra chiến trường : kìa chúng rút gươm chém nhau và vô cùng hoảng sợ.

21Những người Híp-ri trước đó đã theo người Phi-li-tinh và lên trại với chúng, cũng trở mặt mà theo người Ít-ra-en đang ở với vua Sa-un và ông Giô-na-than.

22Tất cả những người Ít-ra-en đã trốn lên núi Ép-ra-im, nghe tin người Phi-li-tinh chạy trốn, cũng đuổi theo sát gót mà đánh.

23Cuộc giao tranh vượt quá Bết A-ven.

24Ngày đó người Ít-ra-en mệt lử, vì vua Sa-un đã ràng buộc dân bằng lời thề nguyền sau đây : “Khốn cho kẻ nào ăn gì từ bây giờ cho đến chiều, trước khi ta trả thù xong các kẻ thù của ta !” Toàn dân không ai nếm một chút gì.

25Toàn dân trong xứ vào rừng. Trên mặt đất có mật ong.

26Dân vào rừng, và kìa có mật ong đang chảy ; nhưng không ai dám nhúng tay vào đưa lên miệng, vì dân sợ lời thề.

27Ông Giô-na-than đã không nghe thấy cha ông bắt dân thề. Ông nhúng đầu cây gậy đang cầm trong tay vào tầng mật ong rồi đưa tay lên miệng ; mắt ông liền sáng ra.

28Bấy giờ một người trong dân lên tiếng nói : “Cha ông đã long trọng bắt dân thề và nói : ‘Khốn cho kẻ nào ăn gì hôm nay.’ Và dân đã kiệt sức.”

29Ông Giô-na-than nói : “Cha tôi đã gây tai hoạ cho xứ sở. Anh em coi : mắt tôi sáng ra vì tôi đã nếm chút mật này.

30Giả như hôm nay dân đã được ăn phần chiến lợi phẩm tìm thấy nơi quân thù, thì có phải là đòn giáng xuống người Phi-li-tinh đã mạnh hơn không ?”

31Hôm ấy họ đánh người Phi-li-tinh từ Mích-mát đến Ai-gia-lôn. Dân đã kiệt sức,

32nên xông vào lấy chiến lợi phẩm : họ bắt chiên dê, bò bê, giết ngay trên đất và ăn thịt có máu.

33Người ta báo tin cho vua Sa-un rằng : “Kìa dân đang phạm tội nghịch cùng ĐỨC CHÚA là ăn thịt có máu.” Vua nói : “Các người đã phản bội. Hãy lập tức vần đến cho ta một tảng đá lớn !”

34Vua Sa-un nói : “Hãy chia nhau đi đến với dân và bảo họ mỗi người phải đem lại cho ta con bò hay con chiên, con dê của mình. Các người phải giết nó ở đây và ăn thịt, và đừng phạm tội nghịch cùng ĐỨC CHÚA là ăn thịt có máu.” Đêm ấy, toàn dân mỗi người đem đến con bò họ có trong tay và họ giết tại đó.

35Vua Sa-un dựng một bàn thờ để kính ĐỨC CHÚA : đó là bàn thờ đầu tiên ông dựng để kính ĐỨC CHÚA.

36Vua Sa-un nói : “Chúng ta hãy xuống đuổi theo người Phi-li-tinh ban đêm, và hãy cướp phá chúng cho đến khi trời sáng, đừng để cho một tên nào sống sót.” Họ nói : “Điều ngài cho là tốt, xin ngài cứ làm.” Vị tư tế nói : “Chúng ta hãy lại gần Thiên Chúa, ngay tại chỗ này.”

37Vua Sa-un thỉnh ý Thiên Chúa : “Con có nên xuống đuổi theo người Phi-li-tinh không ? Ngài có trao chúng vào tay người Ít-ra-en không ?” Nhưng ngày hôm ấy Người không trả lời vua.

38Vua Sa-un nói : “Tất cả các cột trụ của dân, hãy lại gần đây, hãy xem xét cho kỹ tội của ngày hôm nay là ở chỗ nào.

39Có ĐỨC CHÚA hằng sống, Đấng cứu Ít-ra-en ! Dù là chính Giô-na-than, con ta, thì chắc chắn nó cũng sẽ phải chết.” Toàn dân không có ai trả lời vua.

40

41Vua Sa-un thưa với ĐỨC CHÚA : “Lạy Thiên Chúa của Ít-ra-en, xin cho biết đầy đủ.” Ông Giô-na-than và vua Sa-un bị trúng thăm, còn dân thì thoát.

42Vua Sa-un nói : “Hãy rút thăm giữa ta và Giô-na-than, con ta.” Ông Giô-na-than bị trúng thăm.

43Vua Sa-un bảo ông Giô-na-than : “Hãy kể cho cha biết con đã làm gì.” Ông Giô-na-than kể cho cha biết, ông nói : “Quả con đã có nếm chút mật ở đầu chiếc gậy con cầm ở tay. Con đây, con sẵn sàng chết.”

44Vua Sa-un nói : “Xin Thiên Chúa phạt tôi thế này, và còn thêm thế kia nữa !... Đúng chắc chắn con sẽ phải chết, Giô-na-than ơi !”

45Dân nói với vua Sa-un : “Sao ? Ông Giô-na-than, người đã thực hiện cuộc chiến thắng vĩ đại này trong Ít-ra-en, mà phải chết ư ? Không đời nào ! Có ĐỨC CHÚA hằng sống. Không một sợi tóc nào trên đầu Giô-na-than sẽ rụng xuống đất, vì hôm nay ông đã hành động cùng với Thiên Chúa.” Thế là dân đã giải thoát ông Giô-na-than và ông không phải chết.

46Vua Sa-un đi lên, không đuổi theo người Phi-li-tinh nữa ; còn người Phi-li-tinh thì về xứ mình.

47Khi vua Sa-un nắm được vương quyền cai trị Ít-ra-en, vua giao chiến với mọi kẻ thù tứ phía : với Mô-áp, với con cái Am-mon, với Ê-đôm, với các vua Xô-va, với người Phi-li-tinh ; quay về phía nào, vua cũng thắng.

48Vua biểu dương sức mạnh, đánh người A-ma-lếch và giải thoát Ít-ra-en khỏi tay kẻ cướp phá họ.

49Các con trai vua Sa-un là ông Giô-na-than, ông Gít-vi và ông Man-ki Su-a ; còn các con gái vua, thì cô chị tên là Mê-ráp, cô em tên là Mi-khan.

50Vợ vua Sa-un tên là A-khi-nô-am, con gái ông A-khi-ma-át. Tướng chỉ huy quân đội của vua tên là Áp-ne, con ông Ne, ông này là chú vua Sa-un.

51Ông Kít, cha vua Sa-un, và ông Ne, cha ông Áp-ne, đều là con ông A-vi-ên.

52Suốt đời vua Sa-un, luôn có chiến tranh kịch liệt với người Phi-li-tinh. Hễ thấy ai là dũng sĩ hay người can đảm, thì vua Sa-un đều thu dụng.
