Judges

1Then all the children of Israel went out, and the congregation was assembled as one man, from Dan even to Beersheba, with the land of Gilead, to the LORD at Mizpah.

2The chiefs of all the people, even of all the tribes of Israel, presented themselves in the assembly of the people of God, four hundred thousand footmen who drew sword.

3(Now the children of Benjamin heard that the children of Israel had gone up to Mizpah.) The children of Israel said, “Tell us, how did this wickedness happen?”

4The Levite, the husband of the woman who was murdered, answered, “I came into Gibeah that belongs to Benjamin, I and my concubine, to spend the night.

5The men of Gibeah rose against me, and surrounded the house by night. They intended to kill me and they raped my concubine, and she is dead.

6I took my concubine and cut her in pieces, and sent her throughout all the country of the inheritance of Israel; for they have committed lewdness and folly in Israel.

7Behold, you children of Israel, all of you, give here your advice and counsel.”

8All the people arose as one man, saying, “None of us will go to his tent, neither will any of us turn to his house.

9But now this is the thing which we will do to Gibeah: we will go up against it by lot;

10and we will take ten men of one hundred throughout all the tribes of Israel, and one hundred of one thousand, and a thousand out of ten thousand to get food for the people, that they may do, when they come to Gibeah of Benjamin, according to all the folly that the men of Gibeah have done in Israel.”

11So all the men of Israel were gathered against the city, knit together as one man.

12The tribes of Israel sent men through all the tribe of Benjamin, saying, “What wickedness is this that has happened among you?

13Now therefore deliver up the men, the wicked fellows who are in Gibeah, that we may put them to death and put away evil from Israel.” But Benjamin would not listen to the voice of their brothers, the children of Israel.

14The children of Benjamin gathered themselves together out of the cities to Gibeah, to go out to battle against the children of Israel.

15The children of Benjamin were counted on that day out of the cities twenty-six thousand men who drew the sword, in addition to the inhabitants of Gibeah, who were counted seven hundred chosen men.

16Among all these soldiers there were seven hundred chosen men who were left-handed. Every one of them could sling a stone at a hair and not miss.

17The men of Israel, besides Benjamin, were counted four hundred thousand men who drew sword. All these were men of war.

18The children of Israel arose, went up to Bethel, and asked counsel of God. They asked, “Who shall go up for us first to battle against the children of Benjamin?” The LORD said, “Judah first.”

19The children of Israel rose up in the morning and encamped against Gibeah.

20The men of Israel went out to battle against Benjamin; and the men of Israel set the battle in array against them at Gibeah.

21The children of Benjamin came out of Gibeah, and on that day destroyed twenty-two thousand of the Israelite men down to the ground.

22The people, the men of Israel, encouraged themselves, and set the battle again in array in the place where they set themselves in array the first day.

23The children of Israel went up and wept before the LORD until evening; and they asked of the LORD, saying, “Shall I again draw near to battle against the children of Benjamin my brother?” The LORD said, “Go up against him.”

24The children of Israel came near against the children of Benjamin the second day.

25Benjamin went out against them out of Gibeah the second day, and destroyed down to the ground of the children of Israel again eighteen thousand men. All these drew the sword.

26Then all the children of Israel and all the people went up, and came to Bethel, and wept, and sat there before the LORD, and fasted that day until evening; then they offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before the LORD.

27The children of Israel asked the LORD (for the ark of the covenant of God was there in those days,

28and Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron, stood before it in those days), saying, “Shall I yet again go out to battle against the children of Benjamin my brother, or shall I cease?” The LORD said, “Go up; for tomorrow I will deliver him into your hand.”

29Israel set ambushes all around Gibeah.

30The children of Israel went up against the children of Benjamin on the third day, and set themselves in array against Gibeah, as at other times.

31The children of Benjamin went out against the people, and were drawn away from the city; and they began to strike and kill of the people as at other times, in the highways, of which one goes up to Bethel and the other to Gibeah, in the field, about thirty men of Israel.

32The children of Benjamin said, “They are struck down before us, as at the first.” But the children of Israel said, “Let’s flee, and draw them away from the city to the highways.”

33All the men of Israel rose up out of their place and set themselves in array at Baal Tamar. Then the ambushers of Israel broke out of their place, even out of Maareh Geba.

34Ten thousand chosen men out of all Israel came over against Gibeah, and the battle was severe; but they didn’t know that disaster was close to them.

35The LORD struck Benjamin before Israel; and the children of Israel destroyed of Benjamin that day twenty-five thousand one hundred men. All these drew the sword.

36So the children of Benjamin saw that they were struck, for the men of Israel yielded to Benjamin because they trusted the ambushers whom they had set against Gibeah.

37The ambushers hurried, and rushed on Gibeah; then the ambushers spread out, and struck all the city with the edge of the sword.

38Now the appointed sign between the men of Israel and the ambushers was that they should make a great cloud of smoke rise up out of the city.

39The men of Israel turned in the battle, and Benjamin began to strike and kill of the men of Israel about thirty persons; for they said, “Surely they are struck down before us, as in the first battle.”

40But when the cloud began to arise up out of the city in a pillar of smoke, the Benjamites looked behind them; and behold, the whole city went up in smoke to the sky.

41The men of Israel turned, and the men of Benjamin were dismayed; for they saw that disaster had come on them.

42Therefore they turned their backs before the men of Israel to the way of the wilderness, but the battle followed hard after them; and those who came out of the cities destroyed them in the middle of it.

43They surrounded the Benjamites, chased them, and trod them down at their resting place, as far as near Gibeah toward the sunrise.

44Eighteen thousand men of Benjamin fell; all these were men of valor.

45They turned and fled toward the wilderness to the rock of Rimmon. They gleaned five thousand men of them in the highways, and followed hard after them to Gidom, and struck two thousand men of them.

46So that all who fell that day of Benjamin were twenty-five thousand men who drew the sword. All these were men of valor.

47But six hundred men turned and fled toward the wilderness to the rock of Rimmon, and stayed in the rock of Rimmon four months.

48The men of Israel turned again on the children of Benjamin, and struck them with the edge of the sword—including the entire city, the livestock, and all that they found. Moreover they set all the cities which they found on fire.

1Bấy giờ, cả dân Y-sơ-ra-ên đều kéo ra đi, từ Đan cho đến Bê-e-sê-ba, và cho đến xứ Ga-la-át; hội chúng tụ hiệp lại như một người trước mặt Đức Giê-hô-va, tại Mích-ba.

2Những quan trưởng của cả dân sự, tức là của các chi phái Y-sơ-ra-ên, đều ra mắt trong hội của dân Đức Chúa Trời: có bốn trăm ngàn lính bộ, có tài cầm gươm.

3Vả, người Bên-gia-min đã hay rằng dân Y-sơ-ra-ên đi lên Mích-ba. Dân Y-sơ-ra-ên nói: Hãy thuật lại cho biết tội ác nầy đã phạm làm sao?

4Người Lê-vi, chồng của người đàn bà đã bị giết, đáp rằng: Tôi có vào thành Ghi-bê-a, là thành của Bên-gia-min, với vợ bé tôi, đặng ngủ đêm tại đó.

5Nhưng dân Ghi-bê-a dấy lên cùng tôi, đang ban đêm vây nhà tôi ở; chúng đã toan giết tôi, có hành hung cùng vợ bé tôi, và nó chết vì cớ đó.

6Đoạn, tôi nắm lấy thây vợ bé tôi, chặt nó ra từng đoạn, gởi đi khắp địa phận của sản nghiệp Y-sơ-ra-ên; vì chúng nó có phạm một tội trọng, một sự sỉ nhục trong Y-sơ-ra-ên.

7Nầy, hết thảy dân Y-sơ-ra-ên có mặt đây; anh em hãy bàn luận nhau và liệu định phải làm thế nào đây.

8Cả dân sự đứng dậy như một người mà rằng: Chẳng ai trong chúng ta sẽ trở lại trại mình; không ai rút về nhà mình.

9Bây giờ, nầy là điều chúng ta phải xử cho Ghi-bê-a: Chúng ta sẽ đi lên đánh thành đó theo thứ tự của thăm nhất định.

10Trong các chi phái Y-sơ-ra-ên, chúng ta phải lấy mười người trong một trăm, trăm người trong một ngàn, ngàn người trong một muôn. Chúng ta sẽ đi tìm lương thực cho dân sự; rồi khi trở về, người ta phải xử Ghi-bê-a của Bên-gia-min, tùy theo sự sỉ nhục mà thành ấy đã phạm nơi Y-sơ-ra-ên.

11Aáy vậy, hết thảy người Y-sơ-ra-ên nhóm nhau hãm đánh thành đó, hiệp lại như chỉ một người.

12Các chi phái Y-sơ-ra-ên sai sứ giả đến cùng chi phái Bên-gia-min mà nói rằng: Tội ác đã phạm tại trong các ngươi là gì?

13Bây giờ, hãy nộp cho chúng ta những người gian tà của Ghi-bê-a, để chúng ta xử tử chúng nó, và diệt điều ác khỏi giữa Y-sơ-ra-ên. Nhưng người Bên-gia-min không khứng nghe tiếng của anh em mình, là dân Y-sơ-ra-ên,

14bèn ra khỏi thành họ, và nhóm hiệp tại Ghi-bê-a đặng giao chiến cùng dân Y-sơ-ra-ên.

15Trong ngày đó, người ta tu bộ người Bên-gia-min từ các thành mà đến; số là hai muôn sáu ngàn người nam, đều có tài cầm gươm, không kể dân Ghi-bê-a, được số bảy trăm người tinh-binh.

16Trong cả dân sự ấy có bảy trăm người tinh-binh thuận tay tả. Hết thảy những kẻ đó có tài dùng trành ném đá trúng một sợi tóc, mà chẳng hề sai trật.

17Người ta cũng tu bộ những người nam Y-sơ-ra-ên, không kể người Bên-gia-min, thì số được bốn mươi vạn người, có tài cầm gươm, thảy đều là chiến sĩ.

18Vậy, dân Y-sơ-ra-ên đi lên Ghi-bê-a và cầu vấn Đức Chúa Trời như vầy: Ai trong chúng tôi phải lên trước đặng giao chiến cùng người Bên-gia-min? Đức Giê-hô-va đáp: Giu-đa sẽ đi lên trước.

19Vừa sáng ngày, dân Y-sơ-ra-ên kéo đi và đóng trại gần Ghi-bê-a.

20Người Y-sơ-ra-ên ra đánh người Bên-gia-min, dàn trận cùng chúng tại trước Ghi-bê-a.

21Người Bên-gia-min bèn ra khỏi Ghi-bê-a, và trong ngày đó, giết hai muôn hai ngàn người Y-sơ-ra-ên, nằm chật đất.

22Dân Y-sơ-ra-ên lại phấn chí, dàn trận mới tại chỗ mình đã dàn ngày thứ nhất.

23Dân Y-sơ-ra-ên đi lên khóc trước mặt Đức Giê-hô-va cho đến chiều tối, cầu vấn Đức Giê-hô-va mà rằng: Tôi phải giao chiến lại cùng người Bên-gia-min, là anh em của tôi, chăng? Đức Giê-hô-va đáp: Hãy lên đánh nó!

24Ngày thứ nhì người Y-sơ-ra-ên kéo tới đánh người Bên-gia-min.

25Người Bên-gia-min cũng ra Ghi-bê-a nội ngày đó, đánh dân Y-sơ-ra-ên, lại giết nằm sải dưới đất một muôn tám ngàn người của dân ấy, thảy đều có tài cầm gươm.

26Bấy giờ, hết thảy người Y-sơ-ra-ên và cả dân sự đều đi lên Bê-tên, khóc và đứng tại đó trước mặt Đức Giê-hô-va, cữ ăn trong ngày ấy cho đến chiều tối, rồi dâng của lễ thiêu và của lễ thù ân tại trước mặt Đức Giê-hô-va.

27Đang khi ấy, hòm giao ước của Đức Chúa Trời ở tại đó, có Phi-nê-a, con trai Ê-lê-a-sa, cháu A-rôn, phục sự trước mặt Đức Giê-hô-va. Vậy, dân Y-sơ-ra-ên cầu vấn Đức Giê-hô-va mà rằng:

28Tôi còn phải giao chiến cùng người Bên-gia-min, anh em tôi, hay là tôi phải đình lại? Đức Giê-hô-va đáp: Hãy đi lên, vì ngày mai ta sẽ phó chúng nó vào tay các ngươi.

29Y-sơ-ra-ên bèn phục binh chung quanh Ghi-bê-a.

30Ngày thứ ba, dân Y-sơ-ra-ên đi lên, đánh người Bên-gia-min và dàn trận cùng Ghi-bê-a như các lần trước.

31Người Bên-gia-min ra đón dân Y-sơ-ra-ên, bị dụ xa thành. Y như hai lần trước chúng khởi đánh và giết mấy người của dân Y-sơ-ra-ên, chừng ba mươi người, tại trong hai con đường trải qua đồng bằng đi lên, một ngả tới Bê-tên, và ngả kia tới Ghi-bê-a.

32Người Bên-gia-min nói rằng: Kìa, chúng nó bị bại trước mặt chúng ta như lần trước. Nhưng dân Y-sơ-ra-ên nói: Chúng ta hãy chạy trốn, dụ chúng nó ra cách xa thành, đến trong các đường cái.

33Hết thảy người Y-sơ-ra-ên bèn bỏ chỗ mình đứng, dàn trận tại Ba-anh-Tha-ma, và đạo binh phục của Y-sơ-ra-ên đâm sầm ra khỏi chỗ phục mình tại đồng bằng Ghi-bê-a.

34Như vậy, xảy có một muôn tinh binh của Y-sơ-ra-ên đã phục trước tại Ghi-bê-a xông tới, đánh giặc rất dữ dội; nhưng người Bên-gia-min không biết tai họa hãm lấy mình.

35Đức Giê-hô-va đánh bại người chi phái Bên-gia-min trước mặt dân Y-sơ-ra-ên; và trong ngày đó, dân Y-sơ-ra-ên giết hai muôn năm ngàn mốt người Bên-gia-min, hết thảy đều có tài cầm gươm.

36Người Bên-gia-min thấy rõ mình bị bại. Vả, người Y-sơ-ra-ên đã nhường bước cho người Bên-gia-min, vì chúng tin cậy nơi sự phục binh mình ở gần Ghi-bê-a.

37Những binh đã phục, lật đật xông hãm Ghi-bê-a, đi tới lấy gươm giết hết thảy cả người ở thành.

38Người Y-sơ-ra-ên đã hẹn một dấu hiệu với những binh phục, là những binh phục phải làm cho một ngọn khói đen cất lên khỏi thành.

39Vậy, dân Y-sơ-ra-ên đã thối lại trong trận, còn người Bên-gia-min khởi đánh và giết chết chừng ba mươi người Y-sơ-ra-ên. Chúng nói: Quả thật chúng nó bị thua trước mặt chúng ta như lần trước!

40Nhưng khi trụ khói khởi bay lên khỏi thành, người Bên-gia-min nhìn xem lại đằng sau, thấy cả thành đều có khói bay lên trên trời.

41Bấy giờ, dân Y-sơ-ra-ên trở lại, còn những người Bên-gia-min lấy làm kinh hãi, vì thấy tai họa đã hãm áp mình.

42Chúng xây lưng lại trước mặt dân Y-sơ-ra-ên, chạy trốn về phía đồng vắng; nhưng đạo binh Y-sơ-ra-ên theo riết gần, và những kẻ ra khỏi thành đều bị giết liền.

43Chúng vây phủ người Bên-gia-min, đuổi theo và chà đạp họ tại nơi họ dừng lại, cho đến chỗ đối ngang Ghi-bê-a, về hướng mặt trời mọc.

44Như vậy, một muôn tám ngàn người Bên-gia-min phải ngã, thảy đều là người dõng sĩ.

45Trong số người xây lưng chạy trốn về phía đồng vắng, hướng hòn đá Rim-môn, thì dân Y-sơ-ra-ên còn giết dọc đường năm ngàn người nữa, đoạn theo riết gần đến Ghi-bê-om thì giết hai ngàn người.

46Vậy, số tổng cộng người Bên-gia-min ngã chết trong ngày đó là hai muôn năm ngàn người có tài cầm gươm, và thảy đều là người dõng sĩ.

47Lại có sáu trăm người xây lưng chạy trốn về phía đồng vắng, đến hòn đá Rim-môn và ở đó bốn tháng.

48Đoạn, dân Y-sơ-ra-ên trở lại đánh người Bên-gia-min, dùng gươm giết hết thảy người ta ở trong thành, súc vật và hết thảy vật nào gặp được; lại hễ gặp thành nào, thì châm lửa đốt nó.
