2 Kings

1Now a certain woman of the wives of the sons of the prophets cried out to Elisha, saying, “Your servant my husband is dead. You know that your servant feared the LORD. Now the creditor has come to take for himself my two children to be slaves.”

2Elisha said to her, “What should I do for you? Tell me, what do you have in the house?” She said, “Your servant has nothing in the house, except a pot of oil.”

3Then he said, “Go, borrow empty containers from all your neighbors. Don’t borrow just a few containers.

4Go in and shut the door on you and on your sons, and pour oil into all those containers; and set aside those which are full.”

5So she went from him, and shut the door on herself and on her sons. They brought the containers to her, and she poured oil.

6When the containers were full, she said to her son, “Bring me another container.” He said to her, “There isn’t another container.” Then the oil stopped flowing.

7Then she came and told the man of God. He said, “Go, sell the oil, and pay your debt; and you and your sons live on the rest.”

8One day Elisha went to Shunem, where there was a prominent woman; and she persuaded him to eat bread. So it was, that as often as he passed by, he turned in there to eat bread.

9She said to her husband, “See now, I perceive that this is a holy man of God who passes by us continually.

10Please, let’s make a little room on the roof. Let’s set a bed, a table, a chair, and a lamp stand for him there. When he comes to us, he can stay there.”

11One day he came there, and he went to the room and lay there.

12He said to Gehazi his servant, “Call this Shunammite.” When he had called her, she stood before him.

13He said to him, “Say now to her, ‘Behold, you have cared for us with all this care. What is to be done for you? Would you like to be spoken for to the king, or to the captain of the army?’” She answered, “I dwell among my own people.”

14He said, “What then is to be done for her?” Gehazi answered, “Most certainly she has no son, and her husband is old.”

15He said, “Call her.” When he had called her, she stood in the door.

16He said, “At this season next year, you will embrace a son.” She said, “No, my lord, you man of God, do not lie to your servant.”

17The woman conceived, and bore a son at that season when the time came around, as Elisha had said to her.

18When the child was grown, one day he went out to his father to the reapers.

19He said to his father, “My head! My head!” He said to his servant, “Carry him to his mother.”

20When he had taken him and brought him to his mother, he sat on her knees until noon, and then died.

21She went up and laid him on the man of God’s bed, and shut the door on him, and went out.

22She called to her husband and said, “Please send me one of the servants, and one of the donkeys, that I may run to the man of God and come again.”

23He said, “Why would you want to go to him today? It is not a new moon or a Sabbath.” She said, “It’s all right.”

24Then she saddled a donkey, and said to her servant, “Drive, and go forward! Don’t slow down for me, unless I ask you to.”

25So she went, and came to the man of God to Mount Carmel. When the man of God saw her afar off, he said to Gehazi his servant, “Behold, there is the Shunammite.

26Please run now to meet her, and ask her, ‘Is it well with you? Is it well with your husband? Is it well with your child?’” She answered, “It is well.”

27When she came to the man of God to the hill, she caught hold of his feet. Gehazi came near to thrust her away; but the man of God said, “Leave her alone, for her soul is troubled within her; and the LORD has hidden it from me, and has not told me.”

28Then she said, “Did I ask you for a son, my lord? Didn’t I say, ‘Do not deceive me’?”

29Then he said to Gehazi, “Tuck your cloak into your belt, take my staff in your hand, and go your way. If you meet any man, don’t greet him; and if anyone greets you, don’t answer him again. Then lay my staff on the child’s face.”

30The child’s mother said, “As the LORD lives, and as your soul lives, I will not leave you.” So he arose, and followed her.

31Gehazi went ahead of them, and laid the staff on the child’s face; but there was no voice and no hearing. Therefore he returned to meet him, and told him, “The child has not awakened.”

32When Elisha had come into the house, behold, the child was dead, and lying on his bed.

33He went in therefore, and shut the door on them both, and prayed to the LORD.

34He went up and lay on the child, and put his mouth on his mouth, and his eyes on his eyes, and his hands on his hands. He stretched himself on him; and the child’s flesh grew warm.

35Then he returned, and walked in the house once back and forth, then went up and stretched himself out on him. Then the child sneezed seven times, and the child opened his eyes.

36He called Gehazi, and said, “Call this Shunammite!” So he called her. When she had come in to him, he said, “Take up your son.”

37Then she went in, fell at his feet, and bowed herself to the ground; then she picked up her son, and went out.

38Elisha came again to Gilgal. There was a famine in the land; and the sons of the prophets were sitting before him; and he said to his servant, “Get the large pot, and boil stew for the sons of the prophets.”

39One went out into the field to gather herbs, and found a wild vine, and gathered a lap full of wild gourds from it, and came and cut them up into the pot of stew; for they didn’t recognize them.

40So they poured out for the men to eat. As they were eating some of the stew, they cried out and said, “Man of God, there is death in the pot!” And they could not eat it.

41But he said, “Then bring meal.” He threw it into the pot; and he said, “Serve it to the people, that they may eat.” And there was nothing harmful in the pot.

42A man from Baal Shalishah came, and brought the man of God some bread of the first fruits: twenty loaves of barley and fresh ears of grain in his sack. Elisha said, “Give to the people, that they may eat.”

43His servant said, “What, should I set this before a hundred men?” But he said, “Give it to the people, that they may eat; for the LORD says, ‘They will eat, and will have some left over.’”

44So he set it before them and they ate and had some left over, according to the LORD’s word.

Ê-li-sê Giúp Một Góa Phụ Nghèo

2Ê-li-sê hỏi: “Tôi có thể giúp chị điều gì? Chị có gì trong nhà không?” Người đàn bà đáp: “Tôi chẳng có gì trừ một bình dầu.”

3Ê-li-sê bảo: “Chị đi mượn thật nhiều bình trống không của những người láng giềng,

4đem về nhà, đóng cửa lại, cùng với các con chị đổ dầu vào các bình không này, bình nào đầy hãy để riêng ra.”

5Chị ấy vâng lời, làm theo những điều được chỉ bảo. Các con mang bình đến cho chị đổ dầu vào, hết bình này đến bình khác,

6chẳng bao lâu các bình đều đầy! Chị bảo con: “Đem cho mẹ một bình nữa.” Đứa con đáp: “Không còn bình nào nữa cả.” Dầu liền ngừng chảy.

7Chị đến trình lại cho người của Đức Chúa Trời, Ê-li-sê nói: “Hãy đem dầu đi bán để trả nợ, số còn thừa lại cứ để chi dùng trong gia đình.”

Ê-li-sê Giúp Người Phụ Nữ từ Su-nem

8Một hôm Ê-li-sê đi đến thành Su-nem, tại đó có một người đàn bà giàu có mời ông dùng bữa. Về sau, mỗi lần đi qua nơi ấy, ông ghé lại nhà bà dùng bữa.

9Bà nói với chồng: “Tôi biết chắc người vẫn thường ghé lại nhà mình là người thánh của Đức Chúa Trời.

10Ta nên cất một cái phòng nhỏ trên gác rồi để một cái giường, một cái bàn, một cái ghế và một cây đèn trong ấy. Phòng này dành riêng cho ông ấy mỗi khi ông ghé lại nhà ta.”

11Ngày nọ, Ê-li-sê đến, nghỉ trong phòng.

12Ông bảo Ghê-ha-si, đầy tớ mình: “Mời bà chủ nhàvào đây.” Khi bà vào,

13ông bảo Ghê-ha-si nói với bà: “Vì bà đã lo lắng sắm sửa cho chúng tôi mọi thứ này, chúng tôi có thể làm gì cho bà? Bà muốn tôi nói giùm với vua hoặc với tổng tư lệnh quân đội cho bà điều gì không?” Bà đáp: “Không. Tôi vẫn sống bình thường giữa dân tộc tôi.”

14Sau đó, Ê-li-sê lại hỏi Ghê-ha-si: “Như thế, chúng ta phải làm gì cho bà ấy?” Ghê-ha-si gợi ý: “Bà ấy không con mà chồng thì cao tuổi.”

15Ê-li-sê nói: “Hãy gọi ấy bà lại.” Bà vào đứng ở ngưỡng cửa.

16Tiên tri nói: “Sang năm, vào lúc này bà sẽ có một con trai.” Bà kêu lên: “Người của Đức Chúa Trời ơi! Xin đừng dối tôi!”

17Sau đó, bà mang thai, quãng một năm sau, sinh một con trai như lời Ê-li-sê đã nói.

18Đứa bé lớn lên. Một ngày kia, khi người cha đang ở ngoài đồng với thợ gặt thì nó đến,

19nói với cha: “Đầu con đau quá! Đầu con đau quá!” Ông bảo người đầy tớ đem nó về cho mẹ nó.

20Người đầy tớ đem nó về. Nó ngồi trên gối mẹ cho đến trưa rồi chết.

21Bà mang nó đặt trên giường của người Đức Chúa Trời, và đi ra, đóng cửa lại.

22Bà gọi chồng: “Xin cho tôi một người đầy tớ và một con lừa để đi ngay đến gặp người của Đức Chúa Trời.”

23Người chồng hỏi: “Hôm nay đâu phải ngày trăng non hay ngày Sa-bát, tại sao bà muốn đi?” Bà đáp: “Không sao, để tôi đi.”

24Bà thắng lừa và dặn người đầy tớ: “Đánh lừa đi cho nhanh, lúc nào tôi bảo mới đi chậm lại.”

25Và bà đi tận Núi Cát-mên tìm người của Đức Chúa Trời. Thấy bà từ xa, người của Đức Chúa Trời bảo Ghê-ha-si: “Người đàn bà ở Su-nem đến kia kìa.

26Chạy ra đón và hỏi bà ấy: ‘Mọi việc bình thường chứ? Chồng bà có sao không? Con bà thì sao?’ ” Người ấy đáp: “Bình an.”

27Nhưng khi lên núi gặp người của Đức Chúa Trời, bà ôm chặt lấy chân ông. Ghê-ha-si đến định xô bà ra, nhưng người của Đức Chúa Trời nói: “Để mặc bà, vì bà đang khổ tâm điều gì đó. Về điều này, Chúa Hằng Hữu chưa cho ta biết.”

28Bà nói: “Tôi đâu có dám cầu xin một con trai? Tôi chẳng bảo ông đừng làm tôi hy vọng quá hay sao?”

29Ê-li-sê quay sang bảo Ghê-ha-si: “Hãy thắt lưng, cầm gậy này đi ngay! Dọc đường, đừng chào hỏi ai cả. Đem gậy đặt lên mặt đứa bé.”

30Bà mẹ nói: “Tôi thề với Chúa Hằng Hữu và với ông, nếu ông không xuống, tôi sẽ không rời khỏi đây.” Vậy, Ê-li-sê đi theo bà.

31Ghê-ha-si đi trước, đặt gậy lên trên mặt đứa bé, nhưng chẳng nghe hoặc thấy dấu hiệu gì chứng tỏ nó sống, nên quay lại thưa với Ê-li-sê: “Nó không tỉnh lại.”

32Vào nhà, Ê-li-sê thấy đứa bé nằm chết trên giường.

33Ông vào phòng, đóng cửa lại, cầu nguyện với Chúa Hằng Hữu.

34Sau đó, ông nằm sấp trên mình đứa bé, đặt miệng mình trên miệng nó, mắt mình trên mắt nó, tay mình trên tay nó. Khi ông nằm trên mình đứa bé như thế thì người nó ấm dần lại.

35Ông đứng lên, đi qua đi lại trong phòng một lúc, rồi lại lên nằm trên mình đứa bé như trước. Đứa bé hắt hơi bảy lần và mở mắt ra.

36Ông bảo Ghê-ha-si mời người mẹ vào. Khi bà vào, ông bảo: “Con bà đó!”

37Bà đến, sấp mình xuống dưới chân Ê-li-sê, rồi đứng lên bế con đi ra.

Các Phép Lạ trong Nạn Đói

38Ê-li-sê trở lại Ghinh-ganh vào lúc đang có nạn đói. Một hôm, các môn đệ đang ngồi trước mặt ông, ông bảo người đầy tớ: “Lấy nồi lớn nấu canh cho các môn đệ ăn.”

39Một người đi ra đồng hái rau, gặp dây bí dại, hái trái, bọc đầy vạt áo đem về, cắt ra bỏ vào nồi, chẳng cần biết trái ấy là trái gì.

40Nấu xong họ múc canh ra, nhưng có người nếm thử, kêu lên: “Thưa người của Đức Chúa Trời, canh này độc chết người!” Và không ai dám ăn nữa.

41Ê-li-sê nói: “Đem bột lại đây.” Ông bỏ bột vào nồi rồi bảo: “Múc ra cho mọi người ăn.” Nồi canh không còn độc nữa.

42Có một người ở Ba-anh Sa-li-sa đem đến biếu người của Đức Chúa Trời một số hoa lợi đầu mùa, gồm hai mươi ổ bánh lúa mạch và một bao bắp tươi. Ê-li-sê bảo: “Đem dọn cho mọi người ăn.”

43Ghê-ha-si hỏi: “Có ngần này đâu đủ cho một trăm người ăn?” Tiên tri lặp lại: “Đem dọn cho mọi người ăn. Vì Chúa Hằng Hữu phán: ‘Mọi người sẽ ăn no đủ và còn thừa lại nữa.’”

44Ghê-ha-si vâng lời, và đúng theo lời Chúa Hằng Hữu đã phán, ai nấy đều no nê và còn thừa lại.
