Kẻ Thù Chống Đối Việc Xây Lại Tường Thành

1Nghe chúng tôi xây lại tường thành, San-ba-lát giận dữ vô cùng. Ông giận dữ và chế nhạo người Do Thái.

2Trước mặt anh em bạn bè và quân nhân Sa-ma-ri, ông ấy chế nhạo chúng tôi: “Bọn Do Thái yếu nhược này làm gì đây? Chúng nó tưởng có thể xây lại tường thành ấy trong một ngày ư? Chúng nó muốn có dịp dâng tế lễ ư! Chúng nó định dùng lại những viên đá đã cháy rụi từ trong đống đổ nát kia à?”

3Tô-bia, người Am-môn đứng bên cạnh San-ba-lát, phụ họa: “Tường thành như thế thì con chồn leo lên cũng sẽ sụp!”

4Tôi cầu nguyện: “Lạy Đức Chúa Trời, xin nghe lời con cầu xin. Người ta khinh bỉ chúng con. Xin cho những lời chế nhạo của họ đổ lại lên đầu họ, và cho họ bị tù đày sang một nước xa lạ.

5Xin đừng bỏ qua tội họ, đừng xóa lỗi họ, vì họ dám chọc Chúa giận trước mặt chúng con, những người xây tường thành.”

6Nhờ mọi người quyết tâm làm việc, nên toàn thể vách thành được nối liền từ đầu đến cuối, và cao bằng phân nửa bức thành cũ.

7Khi San-ba-lát, Tô-bia, người A-rập, người Am-môn, và người Ách-đốt biết được công việc sửa thành tại Giê-ru-sa-lem tiến triển khả quan, phần tường thành Giê-ru-sa-lem bị thủng được vá lành, liền nổi giận,

8cùng nhau bàn mưu tính kế tấn công Giê-ru-sa-lem để gây rối loạn.

9Chúng tôi cầu nguyện Đức Chúa Trời, rồi cắt người canh gác ngày đêm để phòng thủ.

10Giữa lúc ấy, có người Giu-đa báo: “Những người khuân vác đều mỏi mệt. Chúng tôi chưa bắt tay vào việc xây thành được vì còn quá nhiều đá gạch vụn phải được dọn dẹp.”

11Trong khi đó quân thù đang trù tính việc đột ngột tấn công, chém giết để chấm dứt công việc chúng tôi.

12Những người Do Thái có nhà ở rải rác cạnh quân thù cho chúng tôi biết là: “Quân thù sẽ tấn công ta từ mọi hướng.”

13Để đối phó với tình huống, tôi tổ chức canh gác tại những nơi trống trải, sau phần tường thành thấp nhất. Mỗi gia đình đều tham gia việc canh gác, trang bị bằng gươm, thương, cung.

14Sau khi quan sát tình hình, tôi đứng ra tuyên bố với mọi người từ cấp lãnh đạo cho đến thường dân: “Chúng ta không sợ họ. Xin anh chị em nhớ cho, Chúa Hằng Hữu, Đấng vĩ đại, uy nghi, sẽ chiến đấu cho anh em ta, con ta, vợ ta và nhà ta.”

15Lúc ấy quân thù mới biết rằng âm mưu họ bị bại lộ. Chính Đức Chúa Trời đã tiết lộ và phá hỏng âm mưu ấy. Tất cả chúng tôi trở lại công việc xây tường thành.

16Tuy nhiên, từ đó về sau, phân nửa số người trong chúng tôi làm việc, còn phân nửa, trang bị gươm, giáo, cung, và áo giáp, đứng canh gác phía sau những người xây tường Giu-đa.

17Ngay những người phụ xây cất, những người khiêng gánh đều phải làm việc với một tay, còn tay kia cầm khí giới;

18còn những người thợ chính làm việc với hai tay phải đeo gươm ngang hông. Bên cạnh tôi có người cầm kèn sẵn sàng báo động.

19Tôi nói với mọi người: “Chúng ta phải làm việc cách xa nhau, tản mác quanh tường thành.

20Vậy, mỗi khi nghe tiếng kèn, mọi người khắp nơi phải tập họp tại nơi tôi đứng. Đức Chúa Trời chúng ta sẽ chiến đấu cho chúng ta!”

21Chúng tôi làm việc từ rạng đông cho đến lúc sao mọc. Phân nửa số người lúc nào cũng cầm khí giới sẵn sàng chiến đấu.

22Tôi còn chỉ thị mọi người, kể cả những người đầy tớ, phải ngủ lại đêm trong thành Giê-ru-sa-lem để ai nấy có thể làm việc ban ngày, canh gác ban đêm.

23Và như thế, suốt trong thời gian xây thành, không một ai trong chúng tôi, kể cả tôi, anh em, đầy tớ, và lính hộ vệ tôi, cởi áo ra. Tất cả chúng tôi luôn luôn sẵn sàng chiến đấu.

1But it came to pass, that when Sanballat heard that we builded the wall, he was wroth, and took great indignation, and mocked the Jews.

2And he spake before his brethren and the army of Samaria, and said, What do these feeble Jews? will they fortify themselves? will they sacrifice? will they make an end in a day? will they revive the stones out of the heaps of the rubbish which are burned?

3Now Tobiah the Ammonite was by him, and he said, Even that which they build, if a fox go up, he shall even break down their stone wall.

4Hear, O our God; for we are despised: and turn their reproach upon their own head, and give them for a prey in the land of captivity:

5And cover not their iniquity, and let not their sin be blotted out from before thee: for they have provoked thee to anger before the builders.

6So built we the wall; and all the wall was joined together unto the half thereof: for the people had a mind to work.

7¶ But it came to pass, that when Sanballat, and Tobiah, and the Arabians, and the Ammonites, and the Ashdodites, heard that the walls of Jerusalem were made up, and that the breaches began to be stopped, then they were very wroth,

8And conspired all of them together to come and to fight against Jerusalem, and to hinder it.

9Nevertheless we made our prayer unto our God, and set a watch against them day and night, because of them.

10And Judah said, The strength of the bearers of burdens is decayed, and there is much rubbish; so that we are not able to build the wall.

11And our adversaries said, They shall not know, neither see, till we come in the midst among them, and slay them, and cause the work to cease.

12And it came to pass, that when the Jews which dwelt by them came, they said unto us ten times, From all places whence ye shall return unto us they will be upon you.

13¶ Therefore set I in the lower places behind the wall, and on the higher places, I even set the people after their families with their swords, their spears, and their bows.

14And I looked, and rose up, and said unto the nobles, and to the rulers, and to the rest of the people, Be not ye afraid of them: remember the Lord, which is great and terrible, and fight for your brethren, your sons, and your daughters, your wives, and your houses.

15And it came to pass, when our enemies heard that it was known unto us, and God had brought their counsel to nought, that we returned all of us to the wall, every one unto his work.

16And it came to pass from that time forth, that the half of my servants wrought in the work, and the other half of them held both the spears, the shields, and the bows, and the habergeons; and the rulers were behind all the house of Judah.

17They which builded on the wall, and they that bare burdens, with those that laded, every one with one of his hands wrought in the work, and with the other hand held a weapon.

18For the builders, every one had his sword girded by his side, and so builded. And he that sounded the trumpet was by me.

19¶ And I said unto the nobles, and to the rulers, and to the rest of the people, The work is great and large, and we are separated upon the wall, one far from another.

20In what place therefore ye hear the sound of the trumpet, resort ye thither unto us: our God shall fight for us.

21So we laboured in the work: and half of them held the spears from the rising of the morning till the stars appeared.

22Likewise at the same time said I unto the people, Let every one with his servant lodge within Jerusalem, that in the night they may be a guard to us, and labour on the day.

23So neither I, nor my brethren, nor my servants, nor the men of the guard which followed me, none of us put off our clothes, saving that every one put them off for washing.
