1Cuộc nội chiến giữa hai phe Sau-lơ và Đa-vít tiếp diễn lâu ngày nhưng triều Đa-vít ngày càng mạnh, còn triều Sau-lơ ngày càng suy yếu.

Các Con Trai của Đa-vít Sinh tại Hếp-rôn

2Tại Hếp-rôn, Đa-vít sinh được các con trai sau đây: Trưởng nam là Am-nôn, mẹ là A-hi-nô-am, người Gít-rê-ên.

3Con thứ hai là Chi-lê-áp, mẹ là A-bi-ga-in, trước là vợ của Na-banh ở Cát-mên. Con thứ ba là Áp-sa-lôm, mẹ là Ma-a-ca, con gái của Thanh-mai, vua xứ Ghê-sua.

4Con thứ tư là A-đô-ni-gia, mẹ là Hà-ghi. Con thứ năm là Sê-pha-tia, mẹ là A-bi-tan.

5Con thứ sáu là Ích-rê-am, mẹ là Éc-la, vợ của Đa-vít. Đó là các con trai được sinh cho Đa-vít tại Hếp-rôn.

Áp-ne Điều Đình với Đa-vít

6Trong thời gian chiến tranh với Đa-vít, Áp-ne đã củng cố địa vị mình giữa những người theo phe Sau-lơ.

7Sau-lơ có để lại một cung nữ tên là Rít-ba, con gái của Ai-gia. Ích-bô-sết nói với Áp-ne: “Sao ông dám ngủ với vợ bé của cha ta?”

8Áp-ne giận lắm, nói: “Tôi có phải là chó Giu-đa đâu mà ai nói sao cũng được vậy? Cho đến nay, tôi vẫn tỏ lòng trung thành với triều vua cha Sau-lơ, với anh em, bạn bè của vua cha, bảo vệ cho vua không rơi vào tay Đa-vít, thế mà ngày nay vua hạch lỗi tôi phạm với một người phụ nữ?

9Xin Đức Chúa Trời phạt tôi nặng nề nếu tôi không giúp Đa-vít, thể hiện lời Chúa Hằng Hữu đã hứa với ông ấy

10chuyển vương quyền từ nhà Sau-lơ sang nhà Đa-vít, lập Đa-vít làm vua cả Ít-ra-ên và Giu-đa, từ Đan cho đến Bê-e-sê-ba.”

11Ích-bô-sết không dám nói một lời vì sợ Áp-ne.

12Áp-ne sai người thay mình thưa cùng Đa-vít: “Thực tế thì đất nước thuộc về ai ngài hẳn biết? Nếu ngài lập ước với tôi, thì tôi xin giúp ngài thống nhất Ít-ra-ên.”

13Đa-vít đáp: “Được, ta sẽ lập ước với ông, với điều kiện ông phải đem Mi-canh, con Sau-lơ đến cho ta, nếu không, đừng gặp mặt ta.”

14Đa-vít cũng sai người đến yêu cầu Ích-bô-sết: “Phải trả Mi-canh vợ ta lại cho ta, vì ta đã cưới nàng với sính lễ 100 dương bì Phi-li-tin.”

15Ích-bô-sết cho người đi bắt Mi-canh trong nhà chồng là Pha-ti-ên con của La-ích.

16Mặc cho Pha-ti-ên theo sau Mi-canh, vừa đi vừa khóc cho đến tận Ba-hu-rim. Đến lúc ấy, Áp-ne mới bảo: “Ông về đi!” Pha-ti-ên đành quay về.

17Áp-ne bàn với các trưởng lão Ít-ra-ên: “Lâu nay, các ông vẫn mong muốn Đa-vít làm vua.

18Bây giờ là lúc ta thực hiện ý muốn ấy, vì Chúa Hằng Hữu có hứa với Đa-vít: ‘Ta sẽ dùng đầy tớ Ta là Đa-vít giải cứu Ít-ra-ên khỏi quyền lực Phi-li-tin và các nước thù nghịch.’”

19Áp-ne cũng vận động trong vòng người Bên-gia-min. Sau đó, ông đi Hếp-rôn trình lên Đa-vít nguyện vọng của người Ít-ra-ên và Bên-gia-min.

20Áp-ne đi Hếp-rôn chuyến này với một phái đoàn hai mươi người. Họ được Đa-vít mở tiệc khoản đãi.

21Mãn tiệc, Áp-ne nói: “Bây giờ tôi xin phép lên đường kêu gọi toàn dân họp lại trước mặt vua. Họ sẽ lập ước với vua và vua sẽ cai trị toàn quốc như điều hằng ao ước.” Vậy Đa-vít cho Áp-ne ra về bình an.

Giô-áp Giết Áp-ne

22Áp-ne vừa đi khỏi, Giô-áp dẫn một toán quân về, mang theo nhiều chiến lợi phẩm thu được trong một trận đột kích.

23Khi Giô-áp trở về, người được tin Áp-ne đến bệ kiến Đa-vít, và vua cho ông ta về bình an.

24Giô-áp tức tốc vào chầu Đa-vít và hỏi: “Vua làm gì vậy? Áp-ne đến đây, sao vua lại cho ông ta về?

25Vua biết Áp-ne đó chứ! Ông ta chỉ lừa gạt vua. Ông ta đến chỉ với mục đích dò xem đường đi nước bước của vua và mọi chương trình kế hoạch vua đang thi hành.”

26Nói xong, Giô-áp quay ra, sai quân đuổi theo Áp-ne. Đến hồ chứa nước Si-ra, họ bắt kịp và điệu Áp-ne về Hếp-rôn. Đa-vít không biết gì về việc này cả.

27Khi Áp-ne về đến Hếp-rôn, Giô-áp dẫn ông ra ngoài cổng thành như để nói chuyện riêng, rồi bất ngờ đâm gươm vào bụng giết chết Áp-ne để trả thù cho em mình là A-sa-ên.

28Khi nghe được chuyện này, Đa-vít nói: “Trước mặt Chúa Hằng Hữu, ta và toàn dân trong nước ta đều vô tội về cái chết của Áp-ne con của Nê-rơ.

29Giô-áp và gia đình ông ta phải chịu trách nhiệm. Cầu cho nhà Giô-áp không thiếu người bị ung nhọt, phung hủi, què quặt, bị chém giết, và chết đói!”

30Như vậy, hai anh em Giô-áp và A-bi-sai trả thù cho em mình, vì Áp-ne đã giết A-sa-ên trong trận Ga-ba-ôn.

Đa-vít Than Khóc Áp-ne

31Đa-vít ra lệnh cho Giô-áp và tất cả những người có mặt ở đó xé rách áo mình, mặc áo tang bằng vải thô, khóc thương Áp-ne. Và trong đám tang, chính vua đi sau linh cữu.

32Vậy, Áp-ne được an táng ở Hếp-rôn. Trước cửa mộ, vua và mọi người đều khóc lớn tiếng.

33Vua đọc bài ai ca cho Áp-ne:“Sao Áp-ne phải chết như một người khờ dại?

34Trong lúc tay không bị trói;chân không bị còng?Chỉ vì có người ám hại—nên ông ngã chết cách đau thương.”Mọi người lại khóc.

35Ngày hôm ấy, người ta cố khuyên Đa-vít ăn, nhưng vua thề với Đức Chúa Trời không ăn gì trước khi mặt trời lặn.

36Thấy thế, mọi người rất hài lòng. Mọi việc vua làm đều được mọi người vừa ý.

37Vậy, những người có mặt hôm ấy và toàn dân Ít-ra-ên đều hiểu rằng vua không chủ trương việc giết Áp-ne.

38Đa-vít nói với mấy người thân cận: “Một nhà lãnh đạo, một vĩ nhân của Ít-ra-ên vừa tạ thế hôm nay.

39Mặc dù ta là vua được xức dầu, nhưng ngày nay thế còn yếu, trong khi hai con của Xê-ru-gia—Giô-áp và A-bi-sai—quá bạo tàn; nhưng Chúa Hằng Hữu sẽ lấy ác báo ác.”

1And the war is long between the house of Saul and the house of David, and David is going on and [is] strong, and the house of Saul are going on and [are] weak.

2And there are born to David sons in Hebron, and his first-born is Amnon, of Ahinoam the Jezreelitess,

3and his second [is] Chileab, of Abigail wife of Nabal the Carmelite, and the third [is] Absalom son of Maacah daughter of Talmai king of Geshur,

4and the fourth [is] Adonijah son of Haggith, and the fifth [is] Shephatiah son of Abital,

5and the sixth [is] Ithream, of Eglah wife of David; these have been born to David in Hebron.

6And it cometh to pass, in the war being between the house of Saul and the house of David, that Abner hath been strengthening himself in the house of Saul,

7and Saul hath a concubine, and her name [is] Rizpah daughter of Aiah, and [Ish-Bosheth] saith unto Abner, 'Wherefore hast thou gone in unto the concubine of my father?'

8And it is displeasing to Abner exceedingly, because of the words of Ish-Bosheth, and he saith, 'The head of a dog [am] I — that in reference to Judah to-day I do kindness with the house of Saul thy father, unto his brethren, and unto his friends, and have not delivered thee into the hand of David — that thou chargest against me iniquity concerning the woman to-day?

9thus doth God to Abner, and thus He doth add to him, surely as Jehovah hath sworn to David — surely so I do to him:

10to cause the kingdom to pass over from the house of Saul, and to raise up the throne of David over Israel, and over Judah, from Dan even unto Beer-Sheba.'

11And he is not able any more to turn back Abner a word, because of his fearing him.

12And Abner sendeth messengers unto David for himself, saying, 'Whose [is] the land?' saying, 'Make thy covenant with me, and lo, my hand [is] with thee, to bring round unto thee all Israel.'

13And he saith, 'Good — I make with thee a covenant; only, one thing I am asking of thee, that is, Thou dost not see my face, except thou dost first bring in Michal, daughter of Saul in thy coming into see my face.'

14And David sendeth messengers unto Ish-Bosheth son of Saul, saying, 'Give up my wife Michal, whom I betrothed to myself with a hundred foreskins of the Philistines.'

15And Ish-Bosheth sendeth, and taketh her from a man, from Phaltiel son of Laish,

16and her husband goeth with her, going on and weeping behind her, unto Bahurim, and Abner saith unto him, 'Go, turn back;' and he turneth back.

17And the word of Abner was with the elders of Israel, saying, 'Heretofore ye have been seeking David for king over you,

18and now, do [it], for Jehovah hath spoken of David saying, By the hand of David my servant — to save My people Israel out of the hand of the Philistines, and out of the hand of all their enemies.'

19And Abner speaketh also in the ears of Benjamin, and Abner goeth also to speak in the ears of David in Hebron all that [is] good in the eyes of Israel, and in the eyes of all the house of Benjamin,

20and Abner cometh in unto David, to Hebron, and with him twenty men, and David maketh for Abner, and for the men who [are] with him, a banquet.

21And Abner saith unto David, 'I arise, and go, and gather unto my lord the king the whole of Israel, and they make with thee a covenant, and thou hast reigned over all that thy soul desireth;' and David sendeth away Abner, and he goeth in peace.

22And lo, the servants of David, and Joab, have come from the troop, and much spoil have brought with them, and Abner is not with David in Hebron, for he hath sent him away, and he goeth in peace;

23and Joab and all the host that [is] with him have come, and they declare to Joab, saying, 'Abner son of Ner hath come unto the king, and he sendeth him away, and he goeth in peace.'

24And Joab cometh unto the king, and saith, 'What hast thou done? lo, Abner hath come unto thee! why [is] this — thou hast sent him away, and he is really gone?

25Thou hast known Abner son of Ner, that to deceive thee he came, and to know thy going out and thy coming in, and to know all that thou art doing.'

26And Joab goeth out from David, and sendeth messengers after Abner, and they bring him back from the well of Sirah, and David knew not.

27And Abner turneth back to Hebron, and Joab turneth him aside unto the midst of the gate to speak with him quietly, and smiteth him there in the fifth [rib] — and he dieth — for the blood of Asahel his brother.

28And David heareth afterwards and saith, 'Acquitted [am] I, and my kingdom, by Jehovah, unto the age, from the blood of Abner son of Ner;

29it doth stay on the head of Joab, and on all the house of his father, and there is not cut off from the house of Joab one having an issue, and leprous, and laying hold on a staff, and falling by a sword, and lacking bread.'

30And Joab and Abishai his brother slew Abner because that he put to death Asahel their brother, in Gibeon, in battle.

31And David saith unto Joab, and unto all the people who [are] with him, 'Rend your garments, and gird on sackcloth, and mourn before Abner;' and king David is going after the bier.

32And they bury Abner in Hebron, and the king lifteth up his voice, and weepeth at the grave of Abner, and all the people weep;

33and the king lamenteth for Abner, and saith: — 'As the death of a fool doth Abner die?

34Thy hands not bound, And thy feet to fetters not brought nigh! As one falling before sons of evil — Thou hast fallen!' and all the people add to weep over him.

35And all the people come to cause David to eat bread while yet day, and David sweareth, saying, 'Thus doth God to me, and thus He doth add, for — before the going in of the sun, I taste no bread or any other thing.'

36And all the people have discerned [it], and it is good in their eyes, as all that the king hath done is good in the eyes of all the people;

37and all the people know, even all Israel, in that day, that it hath not been from the king — to put to death Abner son of Ner.

38And the king saith unto his servants, 'Do ye not know that a prince and a great one hath fallen this day in Israel?

39and I to-day [am] tender, and an anointed king: and these men, sons of Zeruiah, [are] too hard for me; Jehovah doth recompense to the doer of the evil according to his evil.'
