1“Khi làm việc lành phúc đức, anh em phải coi chừng, chớ có phô trương cho thiên hạ thấy. Bằng không, anh em sẽ chẳng được Cha của anh em, Đấng ngự trên trời, ban thưởng.

2Vậy khi bố thí, đừng có khua chiêng đánh trống, như bọn đạo đức giả thường biểu diễn trong hội đường và ngoài phố xá, cốt để người ta khen. Thầy bảo thật anh em, chúng đã được phần thưởng rồi.

3Còn anh, khi bố thí, đừng cho tay trái biết việc tay phải làm,

4để việc anh bố thí được kín đáo. Và Cha của anh, Đấng thấu suốt những gì kín đáo, sẽ trả lại cho anh.

5“Và khi cầu nguyện, anh em đừng làm như bọn đạo đức giả : chúng thích đứng cầu nguyện trong các hội đường, hoặc ngoài các ngã ba ngã tư, cho người ta thấy. Thầy bảo thật anh em : chúng đã được phần thưởng rồi.

6Còn anh, khi cầu nguyện, *hãy vào phòng, đóng cửa lại, và cầu nguyện* cùng Cha của anh, Đấng hiện diện nơi kín đáo. Và Cha của anh, Đấng thấu suốt những gì kín đáo, sẽ trả lại cho anh.

7“Khi cầu nguyện, anh em đừng lải nhải như dân ngoại ; họ nghĩ rằng : cứ nói nhiều là được nhậm lời.

8Đừng bắt chước họ, vì Cha anh em đã biết rõ anh em cần gì, trước khi anh em cầu xin.

9vinh hiển,

10dưới đất cũng như trên trời.

11hôm nay lương thực hằng ngày ;

12với chúng con ;

13cho khỏi sự dữ.’

14“Thật vậy, nếu anh em tha lỗi cho người ta, thì Cha anh em trên trời cũng sẽ tha thứ cho anh em.

15Nhưng nếu anh em không tha thứ cho người ta, thì Cha anh em cũng sẽ không tha lỗi cho anh em.

16“Rồi khi ăn chay, anh em chớ làm bộ rầu rĩ như bọn đạo đức giả : chúng làm cho ra vẻ thiểu não, để thiên hạ thấy là chúng ăn chay. Thầy bảo thật anh em, chúng đã được phần thưởng rồi.

17Còn anh, khi ăn chay, nên rửa mặt cho sạch, chải đầu cho thơm,

18để không ai thấy là anh ăn chay ngoại trừ Cha của anh, Đấng hiện diện nơi kín đáo. Và Cha của anh, Đấng thấu suốt những gì kín đáo, sẽ trả lại cho anh.

19“Anh em đừng tích trữ cho mình những kho tàng dưới đất, nơi mối mọt làm hư nát, và kẻ trộm khoét vách lấy đi.

20Nhưng hãy tích trữ cho mình những kho tàng trên trời, nơi mối mọt không làm hư nát, và kẻ trộm không khoét vách lấy đi.

21Vì kho tàng của anh ở đâu, thì lòng anh ở đó.

22“Đèn của thân thể là con mắt. Vậy nếu mắt anh sáng, thì toàn thân anh sẽ sáng.

23Còn nếu mắt anh xấu, thì toàn thân anh sẽ tối. Vậy nếu ánh sáng nơi anh lại thành bóng tối, thì tối biết chừng nào !

24“Không ai có thể làm tôi hai chủ, vì hoặc sẽ ghét chủ này mà yêu chủ kia, hoặc sẽ gắn bó với chủ này mà khinh dể chủ nọ. Anh em không thể vừa làm tôi Thiên Chúa vừa làm tôi Tiền Của được.

25“Vì vậy Thầy bảo cho anh em biết : đừng lo cho mạng sống : lấy gì mà ăn ; cũng đừng lo cho thân thể : lấy gì mà mặc. Mạng sống chẳng trọng hơn của ăn, và thân thể chẳng trọng hơn áo mặc sao ?

26Hãy xem chim trời : chúng không gieo, không gặt, không thu tích vào kho ; thế mà Cha anh em trên trời vẫn nuôi chúng. Anh em lại chẳng quý giá hơn chúng sao ?

27Hỏi có ai trong anh em, nhờ lo lắng, mà kéo dài đời mình thêm được dù chỉ một gang tay ?

28Còn về áo mặc cũng thế, lo lắng làm gì ? Hãy ngắm xem hoa huệ ngoài đồng mọc lên thế nào mà rút ra bài học : chúng không làm lụng, không kéo sợi ;

29thế mà, Thầy bảo cho anh em biết : ngay cả vua Sa-lô-môn, dù vinh hoa tột bậc, cũng không mặc đẹp bằng một bông hoa ấy.

30Vậy nếu hoa cỏ ngoài đồng, nay còn, mai đã quẳng vào lò, mà Thiên Chúa còn mặc đẹp cho như thế, thì huống hồ là anh em, ôi những kẻ kém tin !

31Vì thế, anh em đừng lo lắng tự hỏi : ta sẽ ăn gì, uống gì, hay mặc gì đây ?

32Tất cả những thứ đó, dân ngoại vẫn tìm kiếm. Cha anh em trên trời thừa biết anh em cần tất cả những thứ đó.

33Trước hết hãy tìm kiếm Nước Thiên Chúa và đức công chính của Người, còn tất cả những thứ kia, Người sẽ thêm cho.

34Vậy, anh em đừng lo lắng về ngày mai : ngày mai, cứ để ngày mai lo. Ngày nào có cái khổ của ngày ấy.”

1Take heed that ye do not your alms before men, to be seen of them: otherwise ye have no reward of your Father which is in heaven.

2Therefore when thou doest thine alms, do not sound a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.

3But when thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth:

4That thine alms may be in secret: and thy Father which seeth in secret himself shall reward thee openly.

5¶ And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.

6But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.

7But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking.

8Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him.

9After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.

10Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.

11Give us this day our daily bread.

12And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.

13And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.

14For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you:

15But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

16¶ Moreover when ye fast, be not, as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance: for they disfigure their faces, that they may appear unto men to fast. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.

17But thou, when thou fastest, anoint thine head, and wash thy face;

18That thou appear not unto men to fast, but unto thy Father which is in secret: and thy Father, which seeth in secret, shall reward thee openly.

19¶ Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal:

20But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal:

21For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

22The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light.

23But if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness!

24¶ No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.

25Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment?

26Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they?

27Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature?

28And why take ye thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin:

29And yet I say unto you, That even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.

30Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which to day is, and to morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith?

31Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed?

32(For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things.

33But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.

34Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.
