1Sau đây là tên những con cái Ít-ra-en đã đến Ai-cập với ông Gia-cóp, mỗi người đem theo gia đình mình :

2Rưu-vên, Si-mê-ôn, Lê-vi và Giu-đa,

3Ít-xa-kha, Dơ-vu-lun và Ben-gia-min,

4Đan và Náp-ta-li, Gát và A-se.

5Dòng giống ông Gia-cóp tính tất cả là bảy mươi người ; ông Giu-se thì đang ở bên Ai-cập.

6Rồi ông Giu-se qua đời, cũng như anh em ông và tất cả thế hệ đó.

7Con cái Ít-ra-en sinh sôi nảy nở, nên đông đúc và ngày càng hùng mạnh : họ lan tràn khắp xứ.

8Thời ấy có một vua mới lên trị vì nước Ai-cập, vua này không biết ông Giu-se.

9Vua nói với dân mình : “Này đám dân con cái Ít-ra-en đông đúc và hùng mạnh hơn chúng ta.

10Chúng ta hãy dùng những biện pháp khôn ngoan đối với dân đó, đừng để chúng nên đông đúc, kẻo khi có chiến tranh, chúng hùa với địch mà đánh lại chúng ta, rồi ra khỏi xứ.”

11Người ta bèn đặt lên đầu lên cổ họ những viên đốc công, để hành hạ họ bằng những việc khổ sai ; họ phải xây cho Pha-ra-ô các thành làm kho lương thực là Pi-thôm và Ram-xết.

12Nhưng chúng càng hành hạ họ, thì họ càng nên đông đúc và lan tràn, khiến chúng đâm ra sợ con cái Ít-ra-en.

13Người Ai-cập cưỡng bách con cái Ít-ra-en lao động cực nhọc.

14Chúng làm cho đời sống họ ra cay đắng vì phải lao động cực nhọc : phải trộn hồ làm gạch, phải làm đủ thứ công việc đồng áng ; tóm lại, tất cả những việc lao động cực nhọc, chúng đều cưỡng bách họ làm.

15Vua Ai-cập nói với những bà đỡ đi giúp sản phụ Híp-ri, một bà tên là Síp-ra, một bà tên là Pu-a :

16“Khi đỡ cho sản phụ Híp-ri, các người hãy xem đứa trẻ là trai hay gái. Nếu là trai thì giết đi, nếu là gái thì để cho sống.”

17Nhưng các bà đỡ có lòng kính sợ Thiên Chúa, nên không làm như vua Ai-cập đã truyền, và cứ để cho con trai sống.

18Vua Ai-cập bèn gọi các bà đỡ đến và hỏi : “Tại sao các ngươi làm thế và cứ để cho con trai sống ?”

19Các bà đỡ thưa với Pha-ra-ô : “Đàn bà Híp-ri không như đàn bà Ai-cập, họ khoẻ lắm : bà đỡ chưa kịp đến thì họ đã sinh rồi.”

20Thiên Chúa ban ơn lành cho các bà đỡ ; còn dân thì trở nên đông đúc và rất hùng mạnh.

21Vậy, vì các bà đỡ có lòng kính sợ Thiên Chúa, nên Người đã cho họ có con để nối dòng.

22Pha-ra-ô ra lệnh cho toàn dân của mình : “Mọi con trai Híp-ri sinh ra, hãy ném xuống sông Nin ; mọi con gái thì để cho sống.”

1These are the names of the children of Israel, that went into Egypt with Jacob: they went in, every man with his household:

2Ruben, Simeon, Levi, Juda,

3Issachar, Zabulon, and Benjamin,

4Dan, and Nephtali, Gad and Aser.

5And all the souls that came out of Jacob’s thigh, were seventy: but Joseph was in Egypt.

6After he was dead, and all his brethren, and all that generation,

7The children of Israel increased, and sprung up into multitudes, and growing exceedingly strong they filled the land.

8In the mean time there arose a new king over Egypt, that knew not Joseph:

9And he said to his people: Behold the people of the children of Israel are numerous and stronger than we.

10Come, let us wisely oppress them, lest they multiply: and if any war shall rise against us, join with our enemies, and having overcome us, depart out of the land.

11Therefore he set over them masters of the works, to afflict them with burdens, and they built for Pharao cities of tabernacles, Phithom and Ramesses.

12But the more they oppressed them, the more they were multiplied, and increased:

13And the Egyptians hated the children of Israel, and afflicted them and mocked them:

14And they made their life bitter with hard works in clay, and brick, and with all manner of service, wherewith they were overcharged in the works of the earth.

15And the king of Egypt spoke to the midwives of the Hebrews: of whom one was called Sephora, the other Phua,

16Commanding them: When you shall do the office of midwives to the Hebrew women, and the time of delivery is come: if it be a man child, kill it: if a woman, keep it alive.

17But the midwives feared God, and did not do as the king of Egypt had commanded, but saved the men children.

18And the king called for them and said: What is that you meant to do, that you would save the men children?

19They answered: The Hebrew women are not as the Egyptian women: for they themselves are skillful in the office of a midwife; and they are delivered before we come to them.

20Therefore God dealt well with the midwives: and the people multiplied and grew exceedingly strong.

21And because the midwives feared God, he built them houses.

22Pharao therefore charged all his people, saying: Whatsoever shall be born of the male sex, ye shall cast into the river: whatsoever of the female, ye shall save alive.
