Nehemiah

1Now there was a great cry of the people, and of their wives against their brethren the Jews.

2And there were some that said: Our sons and our daughters are very many: Yet us take up corn for the price of them, and let us eat and live.

3And there were some that said: Let us mortgage our lands, and our vineyards, and our houses, and let us take corn because of the famine.

4And others said: Let us borrow money for the king’s tribute, and let us give up our fields and vineyards:

5And now our flesh is as the flesh of our brethren: and our children as their children. Behold we bring into bondage our sons and our daughters, and some of our daughters are bondwomen already, neither have we wherewith to redeem them, and our fields and our vineyards other men possess.

6And I was exceedingly angry when I heard their cry according to these words.

7And my heart thought with myself: and I rebuked the nobles and magistrates, and said to them: Do you every one exact usury of your brethren? And I gathered together a great assembly against them,

8And I said to them: We, as you know, have redeemed according to our ability our brethren the Jews, that were sold to the Gentiles: and will you then sell your brethren, for us to redeem them? And they held their peace, and found not what to answer.

9And I said to them: The thing you do is not good: why walk you not in the fear of our God, that we be not exposed to the reproaches of the Gentiles our enemies?

10Both I and my brethren, and my servants, have lent money and corn to many: let us all agree not to call for it again; let us forgive the debt that is owing to us.

11Restore ye to them this day their fields, and their vineyards, and their oliveyards, and their houses: and the hundredth part of the money, and of the corn, the wine, and the oil, which you mere wont to exact of them, give it rather for them.

12And they said: We will restore, and we will require nothing of them: and we will do as thou sayest. And I called the priests and took an oath of them, to do according to what I had said.

13Moreover I shook my lap, and said: So may God shake every man that shall not accomplish this word, out of his house, and out of his labours, thus may he be shaken out, and become empty. And all the multitude said: Amen. And they praised God. And the people did according to what was said.

14And from the day, in which the king commanded me to be governor in the land of Juda, from the twentieth year even to the two and thirtieth year of Artaxerxes the king, for twelve years, I and my brethren did not eat the yearly allowance that was due to the governors.

15But the former governors that had been before me, were chargeable to the people, and took of them in bread, and wine, and in money every day forty sides: and their officers also oppressed the people. But I did not so for the fear of God.

16Moreover I built in the work of the wall, and I bought no land, and all my servants were gathered together to the work.

17The Jews also and the magistrates to the number of one hundred and fifty men, were at my table, besides them that came to us from among the nations that were round about us.

18And there was prepared for me day by day one ox, and six choice rams, besides fowls, and once in ten days I gave store of divers wines, and many other things: yet I did not require my yearly allowance as governor: for the people were very much impoverished.

19Remember me, O my God, for good according to all that I have done for this people.

1Dân chúng và vợ con họ kêu ca dữ dội về các người Do-thái đồng bào họ.

2Có người nói : “Chúng tôi phải cho con trai con gái chúng tôi đi ở đợ để có lúa ăn mà sống.”

3Người khác nói : “Chúng tôi phải cầm ruộng đất, vườn nho, nhà cửa để có lúa gạo trong thời đói kém.”

4Người khác lại nói : “Chúng tôi phải cầm vườn nho, ruộng đất của chúng tôi để vay tiền, nộp thuế cho vua.

5Chúng tôi cùng ruột thịt với anh em đồng bào chúng tôi, con cái chúng tôi chẳng khác gì con cái họ, thế mà chúng tôi phải bắt con trai con gái chúng tôi làm nô lệ ! Con gái chúng tôi có đứa phải chịu cảnh tỳ thiếp. Chúng tôi đành bó tay, vì ruộng đất, vườn nho của chúng tôi đã vào tay người khác.”

6Tôi rất tức giận khi nghe họ kêu ca và thốt ra những lời ấy.

7Sau khi suy tính trong lòng, tôi quở trách các trưởng tộc và quan chức. Tôi bảo họ : “Người nào trong các ông cũng bắt đồng bào mình trả lãi quá nặng.” Rồi tôi triệu tập đại hội nhằm chống lại họ.

8Tôi bảo họ : “Chúng tôi đã tuỳ khả năng mà chuộc lại các đồng bào Do-thái chúng ta trước đây đã bị bán cho dân ngoại. Thế mà chính các ông lại định bán đồng bào mình cho người ta để người ta bán lại cho chúng tôi.” Họ làm thinh, không đáp lại được lời nào.

9Tôi nói tiếp : “Các ông làm như thế không được đâu ! Nào các ông không phải sống trong niềm kính sợ Thiên Chúa chúng ta, để khỏi bị dân ngoại là kẻ thù của chúng ta lăng nhục sao ?

10Chính tôi, các anh em tôi và tráng đinh của tôi, cũng đã cho đồng bào Do-thái vay tiền và lúa gạo. Vậy, chúng ta hãy xoá món nợ ấy đi.

11Ngay hôm nay, các ông hãy trả lại cho họ ruộng đất, vườn nho, vườn ô-liu, nhà cửa của họ ; còn tiền, lúa gạo, rượu mới và dầu tươi mà các ông đã cho họ vay, thì hãy tha số lời cho họ.”

12Những người kia đáp : “Chúng tôi sẽ trả lại và không đòi gì hết. Chúng tôi sẽ làm theo như ông vừa nói.” Tôi cho gọi các tư tế lại và bắt họ thề phải làm như lời họ nói.

13Rồi tôi giũ vạt áo mà tuyên bố : “Thiên Chúa cũng sẽ giũ như thế này bất cứ người nào không giữ lời thề đó, làm cho nhà cửa, của cải nó ra tan hoang. Nó sẽ bị giũ sạch như thế này và ra xác xơ.” Toàn thể đại hội thưa : “A-men !”, rồi ca ngợi ĐỨC CHÚA. Và dân đã làm theo lời thề hứa.

14Hơn nữa, từ ngày tôi được lệnh làm tổng đốc xứ Giu-đa –tức là từ năm hai mươi cho đến năm ba mươi hai đời vua Ác-tắc-sát-ta–, trong vòng mười hai năm, chẳng bao giờ tôi và anh em tôi đã nhận lương bổng mà một tổng đốc có quyền hưởng.

15Xưa kia, các tổng đốc tiền nhiệm của tôi đã hà hiếp dân, bắt dân nộp bánh và rượu, mỗi ngày tốn kém bốn mươi đồng bạc. Ngay cả các tráng đinh của họ cũng áp bức dân. Nhưng tôi, tôi đã không làm thế vì kính sợ Thiên Chúa.

16Tôi cũng lo công việc tu bổ tường thành này, nhưng chúng tôi đã không tậu ruộng đất. Tất cả tráng đinh của tôi đều tập trung ở đó để làm việc này.

17Có tới một trăm năm mươi người Do-thái, quan chức ăn uống tại nhà tôi, không kể những người từ các nước chung quanh đến.

18Mỗi ngày mổ một con bò, sáu con cừu ngon nhất, rồi gà vịt, tôi đài thọ hết ; và cứ mười ngày lại đem rượu đến, ê hề. Mặc dù thế, tôi không đòi hỏi bổng lộc dành cho một tổng đốc, vì việc lao dịch đã đè nặng trên dân này rồi.

19Lạy Thiên Chúa của con, xin nhớ đến con mà giáng phúc cho con, xin nhớ đến tất cả những gì con đã làm cho dân này.
