1And they set forward from Elim, and all the multitude of the children of Israel came into the desert of Sin, which is between Elim and Sinai: the fifteenth day of the second month, after they came out of the land of Egypt.

2And all the congregation of the children of Israel murmured against Moses and Aaron in the wilderness.

3And the children of Israel said to them: Would to God we had died by the hand of the Lord in the land of Egypt, when we sat over the flesh pots, and ate bread to the full. Why have you brought us into this desert, that you might destroy all the multitude with famine?

4And the Lord said to Moses: Behold I will rain bread from heaven for you: let the people go forth, and gather what is sufficient for every day: that I may prove them whether they will walk in my law, or not.

5But the sixth day let them provide for to bring in: and let it be double to that they were wont to gather every day.

6And Moses and Aaron said to the children of Israel: In the evening you shall know that the Lord hath brought you forth out of the land of Egypt:

7And in the morning you shall see the glory of the Lord: for he hath heard your murmuring against the Lord: but as for us, what are we, that you mutter against us?

8And Moses said: In the evening the Lord will give you flesh to eat, and in the morning bread to the full: for he hath heard your murmurings, with which you have murmured against him, for what are we? your murmuring is not against us, but against the Lord.

9Moses also said to Aaron: Say to the whole congregation of the children of Israel: Come before the Lord: for he hath heard your murmuring.

10And when Aaron spoke to all the assembly of the children of Israel, they looked towards the wilderness: and behold the glory of the Lord appeared in a cloud.

11And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying:

12I have heard the murmuring of the children of Israel: say to them: In the evening you shall eat flesh, and in the morning you shall have your fill of bread: and you shall know that I am the Lord your God.

13So it came to pass in the evening, that quails coming up, covered the camp: and in the morning, a dew lay round about the camp.

14And when it had covered the face of the earth, it appeared in the wilderness small, and as it were beaten with a pestle, like unto the hoar frost on the ground.

15And when the children of Israel saw it, they said one to another: Manhu! which signifieth: What is this! for they knew not what it was. And Moses said to them: This is the bread, which the Lord hath given you to eat.

16This is the word, that the Lord hath commanded: Let every one gather of it as much as is enough to eat: a gomor for every man, according to the number of your souls that dwell in a tent, so shall you take of it.

17And the children of Israel did so: and they gathered, one more, another less.

18And they measured by the measure of a gomor: neither had he more that had gathered more: nor did he find less that had provided less: but every one had gathered, according to what they were able to eat.

19And Moses said to them: Let no man leave thereof till the morning.

20And they hearkened not to him, but some of them left until the morning, and it began to be full of worms, an it putrified, and Moses was angry with them.

21Now every one of them gathered in the morning, as much as might suffice to eat: and after the sun grew hot, it melted.

22But on the sixth day they gathered twice as much, that is, two gomors every man: and all the rulers of the multitude came, and told Moses.

23And he said to them: This is what the Lord hath spoken: Tomorrow is the rest of the sabbath sanctified to the Lord. Whatsoever work is to be done, do it: and the meats that are to be dressed, dress them: and whatsoever shall remain, lay it up until the morning.

24And they did so as Moses had commanded, and it did not putrify, neither was there worm found in it.

25And Moses said: Eat it today, because it is the sabbath of the Lord: today it shall not be found in the field.

26Gather it six days: but on the seventh day is the sabbath of the Lord, therefore it shall not be found.

27And the seventh day came: and some of the people going forth to gather, found none.

28And the Lord said to Moses: How long will you refuse to keep my commandments, and my law?

29See that the Lord hath given you the sabbath, and for this reason on the sixth day he giveth you a double provision: let each man stay at home, and let none go forth out of his place the seventh day.

30And the people kept the sabbath on the seventh day.

31And the house of Israel called the name thereof Manna: and it was like coriander seed white, and the taste thereof like to flour with honey.

32And Moses said: This is the word, which the Lord hath commanded: Fill a gomor of it, and let it be kept unto generations to come hereafter, that they may know the bread, wherewith I fed you in the wilderness, when you were brought forth out of the land of Egypt.

33And Moses said to Aaron: Take a vessel, and put manna into it, as much as a gomor can hold: and lay it up before the Lord to keep unto your generations,

34As the Lord commanded Moses. And Aaron put it in the tabernacle to be kept.

35And the children of Israel ate manna forty years, till they came to a habitable land: with this meat were they fed, until they reached the borders of the land of Chanaan.

36Now a gomor is the tenth part of an ephi.

1Họ nhổ trại rời Ê-lim lên đường, và toàn thể cộng đồng con cái Ít-ra-en tới sa mạc Xin, giữa Ê-lim và Xi-nai, vào ngày mười lăm tháng thứ hai kể từ khi họ ra khỏi đất Ai-cập.

2Trong sa mạc, toàn thể cộng đồng con cái Ít-ra-en kêu trách ông Mô-sê và ông A-ha-ron.

3Con cái Ít-ra-en nói với các ông : “Phải chi chúng tôi chết bởi tay ĐỨC CHÚA trên đất Ai-cập, khi còn ngồi bên nồi thịt và ăn bánh thoả thuê. Nhưng không, các ông lại đưa chúng tôi ra khỏi đó mà vào sa mạc này, để bắt chúng tôi phải chết đói cả lũ ở đây !”

4ĐỨC CHÚA phán với ông Mô-sê : “Này, Ta sẽ làm cho bánh từ trời mưa xuống cho các ngươi ăn. Dân sẽ ra lượm lấy khẩu phần cho mình, ngày nào cho ngày đó ; Ta muốn thử lòng chúng như vậy xem chúng có tuân theo Luật của Ta hay không.

5Ngày thứ sáu, khi chúng dọn phần ăn đã đưa về, sẽ có gấp đôi phần chúng lượm mỗi ngày.”

6Ông Mô-sê và ông A-ha-ron nói với toàn thể con cái Ít-ra-en : “Chiều nay, anh em sẽ biết là chính ĐỨC CHÚA đã đưa anh em ra khỏi đất Ai-cập ;

7vào buổi sáng, anh em sẽ thấy vinh quang của ĐỨC CHÚA, vì ĐỨC CHÚA đã nghe thấy những lời anh em kêu trách Người. Còn chúng tôi, chúng tôi là gì mà anh em kêu trách chúng tôi ?”

8Ông Mô-sê nói : “ĐỨC CHÚA cho anh em chiều có thịt để ăn, và sáng có bánh để được thoả thuê, vì ĐỨC CHÚA đã nghe thấy những lời anh em kêu trách Người. Còn chúng tôi, chúng tôi là gì ? Không phải anh em đã kêu trách chúng tôi, mà là kêu trách ĐỨC CHÚA.”

9Ông Mô-sê nói với ông A-ha-ron : “Xin anh nói với toàn thể cộng đồng con cái Ít-ra-en thế này : Anh em hãy lại gần thánh nhan ĐỨC CHÚA, vì Người đã nghe thấy những lời anh em kêu trách.”

10Trong khi ông A-ha-ron nói với toàn thể cộng đồng con cái Ít-ra-en, họ quay mặt về phía sa mạc, và kìa, vinh quang ĐỨC CHÚA xuất hiện trong đám mây.

11ĐỨC CHÚA phán với ông Mô-sê :

12“Ta đã nghe tiếng con cái Ít-ra-en kêu trách. Vậy, ngươi hãy bảo chúng rằng : Vào buổi chiều, các ngươi sẽ được ăn thịt, và ban sáng, các ngươi sẽ được ăn bánh thoả thuê, và các ngươi sẽ biết rằng Ta là ĐỨC CHÚA, Thiên Chúa của các ngươi.”

13Thật vậy, buổi chiều, chim cút bay đến rợp cả trại. Và buổi sáng thì có lớp sương phủ quanh trại.

14Rồi khi sương tan đi thì trên mặt hoang địa, có một thứ gì nho nhỏ mịn màng, nho nhỏ như sương muối phủ mặt đất.

15Khi con cái Ít-ra-en thấy thế, họ liền hỏi nhau : “Man hu ?” Nghĩa là : “Cái gì đây ?” Vì họ không biết đó là cái gì. Ông Mô-sê bảo họ : “Đó là bánh ĐỨC CHÚA ban cho anh em làm của ăn !

16Đây là điều ĐỨC CHÚA đã truyền : Mỗi người hãy tuỳ theo sức mình ăn được bao nhiêu mà lượm, mỗi người một đấu, tuỳ theo số người ; mỗi người hãy lấy luôn cho những người ở cùng lều với mình.”

17Con cái Ít-ra-en đã làm như thế ; họ lượm kẻ nhiều người ít.

18Rồi họ lấy đấu đong : kẻ có nhiều thì không dư, người có ít thì không thiếu. Mỗi người đã lượm tuỳ theo sức mình ăn được bao nhiêu.

19Ông Mô-sê nói với họ : “Đừng có ai để dành cho đến sáng.”

20Một số người đã không nghe lời ông Mô-sê : họ để dành cho đến sáng, nhưng trong đó có giòi bọ và xông ra mùi hôi thối. Bấy giờ ông Mô-sê nổi giận với họ.

21Sáng nào cũng vậy, mỗi người lượm tuỳ theo sức mình ăn được bao nhiêu. Và khi mặt trời toả sức nóng, thì nó tan ra.

22Ngày thứ sáu, họ lượm bánh gấp đôi, mỗi người hai đấu. Tất cả những người lãnh đạo cộng đồng đến báo tin cho ông Mô-sê.

23Ông nói với họ : “Đây là điều ĐỨC CHÚA phán : mai là ngày nghỉ, ngày sa-bát thánh để kính ĐỨC CHÚA. Cái gì phải nấu, thì nấu ; cái gì phải luộc, thì luộc ; tất cả những gì còn dư, thì hãy cất đi, để dành cho đến sáng hôm sau.”

24Họ cất đi cho đến sáng hôm sau như ông Mô-sê đã truyền, mà không thấy hôi và cũng không thấy có giòi bọ.

25Ông Mô-sê nói : “Hôm nay anh em ăn phần đó đi, vì hôm nay là ngày sa-bát kính ĐỨC CHÚA ; hôm nay, anh em sẽ không tìm thấy gì ở ngoài đồng.

26Trong sáu ngày, anh em hãy lượm man-na ; còn ngày thứ bảy là ngày sa-bát, thì sẽ không có.”

27Dầu vậy, ngày thứ bảy cũng có người trong dân đi ra lượm mà không tìm thấy.

28ĐỨC CHÚA phán với ông Mô-sê : “Cho đến bao giờ nữa các ngươi từ chối không tuân giữ các mệnh lệnh và luật lệ của Ta ?

29Các ngươi xem : ĐỨC CHÚA đã ban ngày sa-bát cho các ngươi ; vì thế, ngày thứ sáu, Người ban cho các ngươi bánh đủ ăn hai ngày. Ai nấy hãy ở yên một chỗ ; ngày thứ bảy, đừng có ai ra khỏi chỗ ở của mình.”

30Vậy dân nghỉ việc ngày thứ bảy.

31Nhà Ít-ra-en đặt tên cho vật ấy là man-na. Nó giống như hạt ngò, màu trắng và mùi vị tựa bánh tráng tẩm mật ong.

32Ông Mô-sê nói : “Đây là điều ĐỨC CHÚA đã truyền : Hãy đong cho đầy một đấu để giữ lại cho con cháu các ngươi ; như thế, chúng sẽ thấy bánh Ta đã cho các ngươi ăn trong sa mạc, lúc Ta đem các ngươi ra khỏi đất Ai-cập.”

33Ông Mô-sê nói với ông A-ha-ron : “Hãy lấy một cái bình và đổ vào đó một đấu đầy man-na, rồi đặt trước nhan ĐỨC CHÚA để giữ lại cho con cháu anh em.”

34Theo như ĐỨC CHÚA đã truyền cho ông Mô-sê, ông A-ha-ron đã đặt cái bình ấy đằng trước Chứng Ước, để giữ lại.

35Con cái Ít-ra-en đã ăn man-na suốt bốn mươi năm, cho đến khi họ tới đất định cư ; họ đã ăn man-na cho đến khi tới ranh giới đất Ca-na-an.

36Một đấu tương đương bốn lít rưỡi.
