Genesis

1And the whole earth is of one pronunciation, and of the same words,

2and it cometh to pass, in their journeying from the east, that they find a valley in the land of Shinar, and dwell there;

3and they say each one to his neighbour, 'Give help, let us make bricks, and burn [them] thoroughly:' and the brick is to them for stone, and the bitumen hath been to them for mortar.

4And they say, 'Give help, let us build for ourselves a city and tower, and its head in the heavens, and make for ourselves a name, lest we be scattered over the face of all the earth.'

5And Jehovah cometh down to see the city and the tower which the sons of men have builded;

6and Jehovah saith, 'Lo, the people [is] one, and one pronunciation [is] to them all, and this it hath dreamed of doing; and now, nothing is restrained from them of that which they have purposed to do.

7Give help, let us go down, and mingle there their pronunciation, so that a man doth not understand the pronunciation of his companion.'

8And Jehovah doth scatter them from thence over the face of all the earth, and they cease to build the city;

9therefore hath [one] called its name Babel, for there hath Jehovah mingled the pronunciation of all the earth, and from thence hath Jehovah scattered them over the face of all the earth.

10These [are] births of Shem: Shem [is] a son of an hundred years, and begetteth Arphaxad two years after the deluge.

11And Shem liveth after his begetting Arphaxad five hundred years, and begetteth sons and daughters.

12And Arphaxad hath lived five and thirty years, and begetteth Salah.

13And Arphaxad liveth after his begetting Salah four hundred and three years, and begetteth sons and daughters.

14And Salah hath lived thirty years, and begetteth Eber.

15And Salah liveth after his begetting Eber four hundred and three years, and begetteth sons and daughters.

16And Eber liveth four and thirty years, and begetteth Peleg.

17And Eber liveth after his begetting Peleg four hundred and thirty years, and begetteth sons and daughters.

18And Peleg liveth thirty years, and begetteth Reu.

19And Peleg liveth after his begetting Reu two hundred and nine years, and begetteth sons and daughters.

20And Reu liveth two and thirty years, and begetteth Serug.

21And Reu liveth after his begetting Serug two hundred and seven years, and begetteth sons and daughters.

22And Serug liveth thirty years, and begetteth Nahor.

23And Serug liveth after his begetting Nahor two hundred years, and begetteth sons and daughters.

24And Nahor liveth nine and twenty years, and begetteth Terah.

25And Nahor liveth after his begetting Terah an hundred and nineteen years, and begetteth sons and daughters.

26And Terah liveth seventy years, and begetteth Abram, Nahor, and Haran.

27And these [are] births of Terah: Terah hath begotten Abram, Nahor, and Haran; and Haran hath begotten Lot;

28and Haran dieth in the presence of Terah his father, in the land of his birth, in Ur of the Chaldees.

29And Abram and Nahor take to themselves wives; the name of Abram's wife [is] Sarai, and the name of Nahor's wife [is] Milcah, daughter of Haran, father of Milcah, and father of Iscah.

30And Sarai is barren — she hath no child.

31And Terah taketh Abram his son, and Lot, son of Haran, his son's son, and Sarai his daughter-in-law, wife of Abram his son, and they go out with them from Ur of the Chaldees, to go towards the land of Canaan; and they come unto Charan, and dwell there.

32And the days of Terah are two hundred and five years, and Terah dieth in Charan.

1Vả, cả thiên hạ đều có một giọng nói và một thứ tiếng.

2Nhưng khi ở Đông phương dời đi, người ta gặp một đồng bằng trong xứ Si-nê-a, rồi ở tại đó.

3Người nầy nói với người kia rằng: Hè! chúng ta hãy làm gạch và hầm trong lửa. Lúc đó, gạch thế cho đá, còn chai thế cho hồ.

4Lại nói rằng: Nào! chúng ta hãy xây một cái thành và dựng lên một cái tháp, chót cao đến tận trời; ta hãy lo làm cho rạng danh, e khi phải tản lạc khắp trên mặt đất.

5Đức Giê-hô-va bèn ngự xuống đặng xem cái thành và tháp của con cái loài người xây nên.

6Đức Giê-hô-va phán rằng: Nầy, chỉ có một thứ dân, cùng đồng một thứ tiếng; và kia kìa công việc chúng nó đang khởi làm; bây giờ chẳng còn chi ngăn chúng nó làm các điều đã quyết định được.

7Thôi! chúng ta, hãy xuống, làm lộn xộn tiếng nói của chúng nó, cho họ nghe không được tiếng nói của người nầy với người kia.

8Rồi, từ đó Đức Giê-hô-va làm cho loài người tản ra khắp trên mặt đất, và họ thôi công việc xây cất thành.

9Bởi cớ đó đặt tên thành là Ba-bên, vì nơi đó Đức Giê-hô-va làm lộn xộn tiếng nói của cả thế gian, và từ đây Ngài làm cho loài người tản ra khắp trên mặt đất.

10Đây là dòng dõi của Sem: Cách hai năm, sau cơn nước lụt, Sem được một trăm tuổi, sanh A-bác-sát.

11Sau khi Sem sanh A-bác-sát rồi, còn sống được năm trăm năm, sanh con trai con gái.

12A-bác-sát được ba mươi lăm tuổi, sanh Sê-lách.

13Sau khi A-bác-sát sanh Sê-lách rồi, còn sống được bốn trăm ba năm, sanh con trai con gái.

14Sê-lách được ba mươi tuổi, sanh Hê-be.

15Sau khi Sê-lách sanh Hê-be rồi, còn sống được bốn trăm ba năm, sanh con trai con gái.

16Hê-be được ba mươi bốn tuổi, sanh Bê-léc.

17Sau khi Hê-be sanh Bê-léc rồi, còn sống được bốn trăm ba mươi năm, sanh con trai con gái.

18Bê-léc được ba mươi tuổi, sanh Rê-hu

19Sau khi Bê-léc sanh Rê-hu rồi, còn sống được hai trăm chín năm, sanh con trai con gái.

20Rê-hu được ba mươi hai tuổi, sanh Sê-rúc.

21Sau khi Rê-hu sanh Sê-rúc rồi, còn sống được hai trăm bảy năm, sanh con trai con gái.

22Sê-rúc được ba mươi tuổi, sanh Na-cô.

23Sau khi Sê-rúc sanh Na-cô rồi, còn sống được hai trăm năm, sanh con trai con gái.

24Na-cô được hai mươi chín tuổi, sanh Tha-rê.

25Sau khi Na-cô sanh Tha-rê rồi, còn sống được một trăm mười chín năm, sanh con trai con gái.

26Còn Tha-rê được bảy mươi tuổi, sanh Aùp-ram, Na-cô và Ha-ran.

27Đây là dòng dõi của Tha-rê: Tha-rê sanh Aùp-ram, Na-cô và Ha-ran; Ha-ran sanh Lót.

28Ha-ran qua đời tại quê hương mình, tức là U-rơ, thuộc về xứ Canh-đê, khi cha người là Tha-rê hãy còn sống.

29Aùp-ram và Na-cô cưới vợ; vợ Aùp-ram tên là Sa-rai, còn vợ Na-cô tên là Minh-ca; Minh-ca và Dích-ca tức là con gái của Ha-ran.

30Vả, Sa-rai son sẻ, nên người không có con.

31Tha-rê dẫn Aùp-ram, con trai mình, Lót, con trai Ha-ran, cháu mình, và Sa-rai, vợ Aùp-ram, tức dâu mình, đồng ra khỏi U-rơ, thuộc về xứ Canh-đê, đặng qua xứ Ca-na-an. Khi đến Cha-ran thì lập gia cư tại đó.

32Tha-rê hưởng thọ được hai trăm năm tuổi, rồi qua đời tại Cha-ran.
