Acts

1And it came to pass, in Apollos' being in Corinth, Paul having gone through the upper parts, came to Ephesus, and having found certain disciples,

2he said unto them, 'The Holy Spirit did ye receive — having believed?' and they said unto him, 'But we did not even hear whether there is any Holy Spirit;'

3and he said unto them, 'To what, then, were ye baptized?' and they said, 'To John's baptism.'

4And Paul said, 'John, indeed, did baptize with a baptism of reformation, saying to the people that in him who is coming after him they should believe — that is, in the Christ — Jesus;'

5and they, having heard, were baptized — to the name of the Lord Jesus,

6and Paul having laid on them [his] hands, the Holy Spirit came upon them, they were speaking also with tongues, and prophesying,

7and all the men were, as it were, twelve.

8And having gone into the synagogue, he was speaking boldly for three months, reasoning and persuading the things concerning the reign of God,

9and when certain were hardened and were disbelieving, speaking evil of the way before the multitude, having departed from them, he did separate the disciples, every day reasoning in the school of a certain Tyrannus.

10And this happened for two years so that all those dwelling in Asia did hear the word of the Lord Jesus, both Jews and Greeks,

11mighty works also — not common — was God working through the hands of Paul,

12so that even unto the ailing were brought from his body handkerchiefs or aprons, and the sicknesses departed from them; the evil spirits also went forth from them.

13And certain of the wandering exorcist Jews, took upon [them] to name over those having the evil spirits the name of the Lord Jesus, saying, 'We adjure you by Jesus, whom Paul doth preach;'

14and there were certain — seven sons of Sceva, a Jew, a chief priest — who are doing this thing;

15and the evil spirit, answering, said, 'Jesus I know, and Paul I am acquainted with; and ye — who are ye?'

16And the man, in whom was the evil spirit, leaping upon them, and having overcome them, prevailed against them, so that naked and wounded they did flee out of that house,

17and this became known to all, both Jews and Greeks, who are dwelling at Ephesus, and fear fell upon them all, and the name of the Lord Jesus was being magnified,

18many also of those who did believe were coming, confessing and declaring their acts,

19and many of those who had practised the curious arts, having brought the books together, were burning [them] before all; and they reckoned together the prices of them, and found [it] five myriads of silverlings;

20so powerfully was the word of God increasing and prevailing.

21And when these things were fulfilled, Paul purposed in the Spirit, having gone through Macedonia and Achaia, to go on to Jerusalem, saying — 'After my being there, it behoveth me also to see Rome;'

22and having sent to Macedonia two of those ministering to him — Timotheus and Erastus — he himself stayed a time in Asia.

23And there came, at that time, not a little stir about the way,

24for a certain one, Demetrius by name, a worker in silver, making silver sanctuaries of Artemis, was bringing to the artificers gain not a little,

25whom, having brought in a crowd together, and those who did work about such things, he said, 'Men, ye know that by this work we have our wealth;

26and ye see and hear, that not only at Ephesus, but almost in all Asia, this Paul, having persuaded, did turn away a great multitude, saying, that they are not gods who are made by hands;

27and not only is this department in danger for us of coming into disregard, but also, that of the great goddess Artemis the temple is to be reckoned for nothing, and also her greatness is about to be brought down, whom all Asia and the world doth worship.'

28And they having heard, and having become full of wrath, were crying out, saying, 'Great [is] the Artemis of the Ephesians!'

29and the whole city was filled with confusion, they rushed also with one accord into the theatre, having caught Gaius and Aristarchus, Macedonians, Paul's fellow-travellers.

30And on Paul's purposing to enter in unto the populace, the disciples were not suffering him,

31and certain also of the chief men of Asia, being his friends, having sent unto him, were entreating him not to venture himself into the theatre.

32Some indeed, therefore, were calling out one thing, and some another, for the assembly was confused, and the greater part did not know for what they were come together;

33and out of the multitude they put forward Alexander — the Jews thrusting him forward — and Alexander having beckoned with the hand, wished to make defence to the populace,

34and having known that he is a Jew, one voice came out of all, for about two hours, crying, 'Great [is] the Artemis of the Ephesians!'

35And the public clerk having quieted the multitude, saith, 'Men, Ephesians, why, who is the man that doth not know that the city of the Ephesians is a devotee of the great goddess Artemis, and of that which fell down from Zeus?

36these things, then, not being to be gainsaid, it is necessary for you to be quiet, and to do nothing rashly.

37'For ye brought these men, who are neither temple-robbers nor speaking evil of your goddess;

38if indeed, therefore, Demetrius and the artificers with him with any one have a matter, court [days] are held, and there are proconsuls; let them accuse one another.

39'And if ye seek after anything concerning other matters, in the legal assembly it shall be determined;

40for we are also in peril of being accused of insurrection in regard to this day, there being no occasion by which we shall be able to give an account of this concourse;'

41and these things having said, he dismissed the assembly.

Hành Trình Truyền Giáo Thứ Ba của Phao-lô

1Trong khi A-bô-lô ở Cô-rinh-tô, Phao-lô đi lên các xứ miền Bắc, rồi xuống Ê-phê-sô. Gặp một số tín hữu,

2ông hỏi: “Khi tin Chúa, anh em đã nhận được Chúa Thánh Linh chưa?” Họ đáp: “Chúng tôi chưa bao giờ nghe nói về Chúa Thánh Linh cả.”

3Ông hỏi tiếp: “Thế anh em đã chịu báp-tem nào?” Họ đáp: “Báp-tem của Giăng.”

4Phao-lô giải thích: “Báp-tem của Giăng chỉ về sự ăn năn tội lỗi. Giăng đã dạy dân chúng tin Đấng đến sau mình, tức là tin Chúa Giê-xu.”

5Họ liền chịu báp-tem nhân danh Chúa Giê-xu.

6Phao-lô đặt tay trên họ, Chúa Thánh Linh liền giáng xuống ngự vào lòng mỗi người, cho họ nói ngoại ngữ và lời tiên tri.

7Số tín hữu Phao-lô làm báp-tem hôm ấy được mười hai người.

Phao-lô Thi Hành Mục Vụ tại Ê-phê-sô

8Phao-lô vào hội đường, dạn dĩ nói về Chúa liên tiếp trong ba tháng. Ông giảng luận về Nước của Đức Chúa Trời và thuyết phục nhiều người tin Chúa.

9Nhưng có một số người cứng lòng không tin, trở mặt đả kích Đạo Chúa trước quần chúng. Phao-lô bỏ hội đường, đem các tín hữu về thảo luận riêng tại trường học Ti-ra-nu.

10Việc này được tiếp tục suốt hai năm, Phúc Âm được phổ biến rộng rãi đến nỗi dân chúng Tiểu Á, cả Do Thái và Hy Lạp đều nghe Đạo Chúa.

11Đức Chúa Trời cho Phao-lô quyền năng làm nhiều phép lạ.

12Người ta chỉ cần lấy khăn tay, khăn choàng của ông đặt trên người bệnh thì bệnh liền hết, quỷ bị trục xuất.

13Một nhóm người Do Thái đi từ nơi này đến nơi khác để trừ quỷ. Họ đi khắp nơi thử dùng Danh Chúa Giê-xu để chữa những người bị quỷ ám: “Nhân danh Chúa Giê-xu mà Phao-lô truyền giảng, ta trục xuất các ngươi!”

14Bảy con trai của thầy trưởng tế Sê-va cũng làm như vậy.

15Nhưng quỷ trả lời: “Ta biết Chúa Giê-xu và biết Phao-lô, còn các anh là ai?”

16Người bị quỷ ám nhảy bổ vào đánh họ ngã rập, khiến họ phải vất quần áo chạy trốn, mình đầy thương tích.

17Việc này đồn ra khắp thành Ê-phê-sô, người Do Thái và Hy Lạp đều khiếp sợ. Danh Chúa Giê-xu càng được tôn kính.

18Nhiều tín hữu đến xưng tội, khai ra những việc xấu họ đã làm.

19Có những thầy phù thủy đem sách tà thuật gom lại đốt trước công chúng. Số sách trị giá độ 50.000 miếng bạc.

20Đạo Chúa ngày càng phát triển mạnh mẽ.

21Sau thời gian ấy, Phao-lô có ý định đi thăm xứ Ma-xê-đoan và xứ A-chai trước khi về Giê-ru-sa-lem. Ông nói: “Sau đó tôi còn phải đến thủ đô La Mã nữa.”

22Phao-lô sai hai phụ tá là Ti-mô-thê và Ê-rát sang Ma-xê-đoan trước, trong khi ông còn ở lại Tiểu Á.

Náo Loạn tại Ê-phê-sô

23Lúc ấy tại Ê-phê-sô có cuộc náo loạn lớn, nhằm chống lại công cuộc truyền bá Phúc Âm.

24Một người thợ bạc tên Đê-mê-triu làm đền thờ thần Đi-anh, đem lại thịnh vượng chung cho cả giới thủ công.

25Một hôm, Đê-mê-triu triệu tập các đoàn thợ bạc và hô hào: “Các bạn đã biết nhờ nghề này mà chúng ta phát tài.

26Tuy nhiên, tên Phao-lô đã quyến rũ bao nhiêu người tại Ê-phê-sô và cả Tiểu Á. Ông ấy dám bảo các thần do tay người làm ra đều là giả tạo! Các bạn đã thấy tận mắt, nghe tận tai rồi.

27Như thế, nghề nghiệp chúng ta đã bị bêu xấu, mà đền thờ của nữ thần Đi-anh vĩ đại cũng bị khinh bỉ, và uy danh nữ thần mà Tiểu Á và cả thế giới tôn thờ sẽ tiêu tan!”

28Nghe xong, đám thợ bạc nổi giận, đồng thanh hô lớn: “Hoan hô nữ thần Đi-anh vĩ đại của người Ê-phê-sô!”

29Chẳng mấy chốc, cả thành phố đều náo động. Dân chúng cùng ùa đến rạp hát, bắt theo hai bạn đồng hành của Phao-lô là Gai-út và A-ri-tạc, người Ma-xê-đoan.

30Phao-lô định ra tiếp xúc với đám đông, nhưng các tín hữu can ngăn.

31Một vài viên chức thành phố là bạn của Phao-lô, cũng sai người đến khuyên ông đừng mạo hiểm vào nhà hát.

32Bên trong, đám đông la ó, người la thế này, người la thế khác. Tất cả đều hỗn loạn. Phần đông chẳng hiểu vì sao mình đến đó.

33Người Do Thái đẩy A-léc-xan-đơ tới trước và bảo ông phát biểu. Ông lấy tay ra hiệu định lên tiếng thanh minh.

34Nhưng khi dân chúng thấy ông là người Do Thái liền đồng thanh gào thét suốt hai giờ: “Hoan hô nữ thần Đi-anh vĩ đại của người Ê-phê-sô! Hoan hô nữ thần Đi-anh vĩ đại của người Ê-phê-sô!”

35Cuối cùng viên thị trưởng yêu cầu mọi người yên lặng rồi lựa lời khuyên can: “Thưa cư dân Ê-phê-sô, mọi người đều biết Ê-phê-sô là trung tâm thờ phượng nữ thần Đi-anh vĩ đại. Tượng của nữ thần đã từ trời rơi xuống giữa chúng ta.

36Không ai chối cãi được điều ấy nên quý vị phải bình tĩnh, đừng liều lĩnh.

37Vì những người quý vị bắt giải đến đây không trộm cắp vật thánh đền thờ, cũng không xúc phạm nữ thần chúng ta.

38Vậy nếu Đê-mê-triu và các đoàn thợ bạc muốn kiện cáo ai, đã có tòa án và các phán quan xét xử. Cứ để họ đưa nhau ra tòa.

39Còn nếu quý vị muốn khiếu nại điều gì, sẽ có hội đồng hợp pháp giải quyết.

40Vì không khéo chúng ta có thể bị chính quyền La Mã hạch tội về vụ rối loạn hôm nay, mà không có lý do nào để bào chữa cả!”

41Nói xong, ông cho giải tán đám đông.
