Joshua

1When all the kings of the Amorites, who were beyond the Jordan westward, and all the kings of the Canaanites, who were by the sea, heard how the LORD had dried up the waters of the Jordan from before the children of Israel until we had crossed over, their heart melted, and there was no more spirit in them, because of the children of Israel.

2At that time, the LORD said to Joshua, “Make flint knives, and circumcise again the sons of Israel the second time.”

3Joshua made himself flint knives, and circumcised the sons of Israel at the hill of the foreskins.

4This is the reason Joshua circumcised them: all the people who came out of Egypt, who were males, even all the men of war, died in the wilderness along the way, after they came out of Egypt.

5For all the people who came out were circumcised; but all the people who were born in the wilderness along the way as they came out of Egypt had not been circumcised.

6For the children of Israel walked forty years in the wilderness until all the nation, even the men of war who came out of Egypt, were consumed, because they didn’t listen to the LORD’s voice. The LORD swore to them that he wouldn’t let them see the land which the LORD swore to their fathers that he would give us, a land flowing with milk and honey.

7Their children, whom he raised up in their place, were circumcised by Joshua, for they were uncircumcised, because they had not circumcised them on the way.

8When they were done circumcising the whole nation, they stayed in their places in the camp until they were healed.

9The LORD said to Joshua, “Today I have rolled away the reproach of Egypt from you.” Therefore the name of that place was called Gilgalto this day.

10The children of Israel encamped in Gilgal. They kept the Passover on the fourteenth day of the month at evening in the plains of Jericho.

11They ate unleavened cakes and parched grain of the produce of the land on the next day after the Passover, in the same day.

12The manna ceased on the next day, after they had eaten of the produce of the land. The children of Israel didn’t have manna any more, but they ate of the fruit of the land of Canaan that year.

13When Joshua was by Jericho, he lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, a man stood in front of him with his sword drawn in his hand. Joshua went to him and said to him, “Are you for us, or for our enemies?”

14He said, “No; but I have come now as commander of the LORD’s army.” Joshua fell on his face to the earth, and worshipped, and asked him, “What does my lord say to his servant?”

15The prince of the LORD’s army said to Joshua, “Take off your sandals, for the place on which you stand is holy.” Joshua did so.

1Vậy, khi tất cả các vua E-mô-ri ở bên kia sông Gio-đan, về phía tây, cũng như mọi vua Ca-na-an ở vùng duyên hải, nghe tin ĐỨC CHÚA làm cạn sông Gio-đan trước mặt con cái Ít-ra-en cho đến khi họ qua sông, thì tâm thần họ sợ hãi như muốn chảy tan ra, họ không còn nhuệ khí nữa trước mặt con cái Ít-ra-en.

2Khi ấy, ĐỨC CHÚA phán với ông Giô-suê : “Ngươi hãy làm những con dao bằng đá sắc để lại cắt bì một lần nữa cho con cái Ít-ra-en.”

3Ông Giô-suê đã làm những con dao bằng đá và cắt bì cho con cái Ít-ra-en ở Gò Da Quy Đầu.

4Đây là lý do khiến ông Giô-suê làm việc cắt bì này : Toàn thể đám dân đàn ông con trai ra khỏi Ai-cập, những người tham chiến, đều đã chết dọc đường, trong sa mạc, sau khi ra khỏi Ai-cập ;

5tất cả đám dân đó, khi ra khỏi Ai-cập, đều đã chịu cắt bì ; còn toàn thể đám dân sinh ở dọc đường, trong sa mạc, thì không.

6Vì con cái Ít-ra-en đã đi trong sa mạc bốn mươi năm, cho đến khi tất cả đám dân đó, tức là những người ra khỏi Ai-cập mà đã tham chiến, đều bị tiêu diệt ; họ đã không nghe lời ĐỨC CHÚA, nên ĐỨC CHÚA thề với họ là sẽ không cho họ thấy đất Người đã thề với cha ông họ là sẽ ban cho chúng ta, đất tuôn chảy sữa và mật.

7Nhưng Người đã cho con cái họ sinh ra thay thế họ, và ông Giô-suê đã cắt bì cho chúng. Quả thế, chúng chưa được cắt bì, vì dọc đường người ta đã không cắt bì cho chúng.

8Vậy, khi người ta đã cắt bì cho toàn thể dân chúng rồi, thì chúng ở yên tại chỗ trong trại cho đến khi lành.

9ĐỨC CHÚA phán với ông Giô-suê : “Hôm nay Ta đã cất khỏi các ngươi cái ô nhục của người Ai-cập.” Vì thế, người ta đã gọi tên nơi ấy là Ghin-gan cho đến ngày nay.

10Con cái Ít-ra-en đóng trại ở Ghin-gan và cử hành lễ Vượt Qua ngày mười bốn trong tháng, vào buổi chiều, trong vùng thảo nguyên Giê-ri-khô.

11Hôm sau lễ Vượt Qua, họ đã dùng thổ sản trong xứ, tức là bánh không men và hạt lúa rang, vào đúng ngày đó.

12Hôm sau, không còn man-na nữa, khi họ dùng thổ sản trong xứ ; thế là con cái Ít-ra-en không còn có man-na nữa. Năm ấy, họ đã dùng hoa màu của đất Ca-na-an.

13Vậy, khi ở gần Giê-ri-khô, ông Giô-suê ngước mắt nhìn, thì này có người đứng đối diện với ông, tay cầm gươm trần. Ông Giô-suê đến gần người ấy và nói : “Ông về phe chúng tôi hay về phe địch ?”

14Người ấy nói : “Không, ta là tướng chỉ huy đạo binh của ĐỨC CHÚA, bây giờ ta đến...” Ông Giô-suê sấp mặt xuống đất, sụp lạy và nói : “Ngài muốn dạy tôi tớ ngài điều gì ?”

15Vị tướng chỉ huy đạo binh của ĐỨC CHÚA nói với ông Giô-suê : “Cởi dép ở chân ra, vì nơi ngươi đang đứng là nơi thánh !” Và ông Giô-suê đã làm như vậy.
