1 Maccabees

1His son Judas, who was called Maccabaeus, rose up in his place.

2All his kindred helped him, and so did all those who joined with his father, and they fought with gladness the battle of Israel.

3He got his people great glory, and put on a breastplate like a giant, and bound his warlike harness around him, and set battles in array, protecting the army with his sword.

4He was like a lion in his deeds, and like a lion’s cub roaring for prey.

5He hunted and pursued the lawless, and he burnt up those who troubled his people.

6The lawless shrunk back for fear of him, and all the workers of lawlessness were very troubled, and deliverance prospered in his hand.

7He angered many kings and made Jacob glad with his acts. His memory is blessed forever.

8He went through the cities of Judah, destroyed the ungodly out of the land, and turned away wrath from Israel.

9He was renowned to the utmost part of the earth. He gathered together those who were ready to perish.

10Apollonius gathered the Gentiles together with a great army from Samaria to fight against Israel.

11Judas learnt of it, and he went out to meet him, struck him, and killed him. Many fell wounded to death, and the rest fled.

12They took their spoils, and Judas took Apollonius’ sword, and he fought with it all his days.

13Seron, the commander of the army of Syria, heard that Judas had gathered a large company, including a body of faithful men who stayed with him, went out to war.

14He said, “I will make myself a name and get myself glory in the kingdom. I will fight against Judas and those who are with him, who despise the king’s command.

15A mighty army of the ungodly went up with him to help him, to take vengeance on the children of Israel.

16He came near to the ascent of Bethhoron, and Judas went out to meet him with a small company.

17But when they saw the army coming to meet them, they said to Judas, “What? Shall we be able, being a small company, to fight against so great and strong a multitude? We for our part are faint, having tasted no food this day.”

18Judas said, “It is an easy thing for many to be hemmed in by the hands of a few. Withheaven it is all one, to save by many or by few;

19for victory in battle stands not in the multitude of an army, but strength is from heaven.

20They come to us in fullness of insolence and lawlessness, to destroy us and our wives and our children, and to plunder us,

21but we fight for our lives and our laws.

22He himself will crush them before our face; but as for you, don’t be afraid of them.

23Now when he had finished speaking, he rushed suddenly against Seron and his army, and they were defeated before him.

24They pursued them down the descent of Bethhoron to the plain, and about eight hundred men of them fell; but the rest fled into the land of the Philistines.

25The fear of Judas and his kindred, and the dread of them, began to fall on the nations around them.

26His fame reached the king, and every nation told of the battles of Judas.

27But when King Antiochus heard these words, he was full of indignation; and he sent and gathered together all the forces of his realm, an exceedingly strong army.

28He opened his treasury and gave his forces pay for a year, and commanded them to be ready for every need.

29He saw that the money was gone from his treasures, and that the tributes of the country were small, because of the dissension and disaster which he had brought upon the land, to the end that he might take away the laws which had been from the first days.

30He was afraid that he wouldn’t have enough as at other times for the charges and the gifts which he used to give with a liberal hand, more abundantly than the kings who were before him.

31And he was exceedingly perplexed in his mind, and he determined to go into Persia, and to take the tributes of those countries, and to gather much money.

32He left Lysias, an honourable man, and one of royal lineage, to be over the affairs of the king from the river Euphrates to the borders of Egypt,

33and to bring up his son Antiochus, until he came again.

34He delivered to Lysias half of his forces and the elephants, and gave him charge of all the things that he would have done, and concerning those who lived in Judea and in Jerusalem,

35that he should send an army against them to root out and destroy the strength of Israel and the remnant of Jerusalem, and to take away their memory from the place,

36and that he should make foreigners live in all their territory, and should divide their land to them by lot.

37The king took the half that remained of the forces, and left Antioch, his royal city, in the one hundred and forty seventh year;and he passed over the river Euphrates, and went through the upper countries.

38Lysias chose Ptolemy the son of Dorymenes, Nicanor, and Gorgias, mighty men of the king’s friends;

39and with them, he sent forty thousand infantry and seven thousand cavalry to go into the land of Judah and to destroy it, according to the word of the king.

40They set out with all their army, and came and encamped near Emmaus in the plain country.

41The merchants of the country heard of their fame, and took silver and gold in large quantities, and fetters,and came into the camp to take the children of Israel for slaves. Forces of Syria and of the land of the Philistinesjoined with them.

42Judas and his kindred saw that evils were multiplied, and that the forces were encamping in their borders. They learnt about the king’s words which he had commanded, to destroy the people and make an end of them.

43Then they each said to his neighbour, “Let’s repair the ruins of our people. Let’s fight for our people and the holy place.”

44The congregation was gathered together, that they might be ready for battle, and that they might pray and ask for mercy and compassion.

45Jerusalem was without inhabitant like a wilderness. There was none of her offspring who went in or went out. The sanctuary was trampled down. Children of foreigners were in the citadel. The Gentiles lived there. Joy was taken away from Jacob, and the pipe and the harp ceased.

46They gathered themselves together, and came to Mizpeh, near Jerusalem; for in Mizpeh there used to be a place of prayer for Israel.

47They fasted that day, put on sackcloth, put ashes on their heads, tore their clothes,

48and opened the book of the law, to learn about the things for which the Gentiles consulted the images of their idols.

49They brought the priests’ garments, the first fruits, and the tithes. They stirred up the Nazarites, who had accomplished their days.

50They cried aloud towards heaven, saying, “What should we do with these men? Where should we carry them away?

51Your holy place is trampled down and profaned. Your priests mourn in humiliation.

52Behold, the Gentiles are assembled together against us to destroy us. You know what things they imagine against us.

53How will we be able to stand against them, unless you help us?”

54They sounded with the trumpets, and gave a loud shout.

55And after this Judas appointed leaders of the people: captains of thousands, captains of hundreds, captains of fifties, and captains of tens.

56He said to those who were building houses, were betrothing wives, were planting vineyards, and were fearful, that they should return, each man to his own house, according to the law.

57The army marched out and encamped upon the south side of Emmaus.

58Judas said, “Arm yourselves and be valiant men! Be ready in the morning to fight with these Gentiles who are assembled together against us to destroy us and our holy place.

59For it is better for us to die in battle than to see the calamities of our nation and the holy place.

60Nevertheless, as may be the will in heaven, so shall he do.

1Ông Giu-đa cũng gọi là Ma-ca-bê, con ông Mát-tít-gia, đứng lên thay cha.

2Tất cả anh em ông và mọi người thuộc phe của cha ông đều ủng hộ ông, và họ phấn khởi tham gia cuộc kháng chiến của dân Ít-ra-en.

3Ông giao tranh nhiều trận và vung gươm bảo vệ trại quân.

4như sư tử con rống lên săn mồi.

5và phóng hoả đốt những kẻ gây rối trong dân.

6và cuộc giải phóng trôi chảy nhờ tay ông.

7tới muôn đời, nhắc nhở đến ông vẫn còn là một mối phúc.

8và hướng cơn thịnh nộ ra khỏi Ít-ra-en.

9ông quy tụ lại những người sắp tiêu vong.

10A-pô-lô-ni-ô quy tụ dân ngoại cùng với một đạo quân hùng mạnh từ Sa-ma-ri, để giao chiến với dân Ít-ra-en.

11Được tin, ông Giu-đa ra nghênh chiến ; ông đánh bại và giết chết A-pô-lô-ni-ô. Nhiều người bị tử thương, còn đám sống sót thì trốn chạy.

12Quân Ít-ra-en thu chiến lợi phẩm của chúng ; còn ông Giu-đa thì lấy thanh gươm của A-pô-lô-ni-ô và dùng gươm đó để chiến đấu suốt đời ông.

13Nghe biết là ông Giu-đa đã tập hợp quanh mình đông đảo quần chúng, cùng với những người trung thành và sẵn sàng chiến đấu, Xê-rôn, tướng chỉ huy quân đội Xy-ri,

14tự nhủ : “Ta phải làm cho danh ta lừng lẫy và ta sẽ được vinh hiển trong vương quốc này. Ta sẽ giao chiến với Giu-đa cùng với dân ở đó là bọn người đã coi thường lệnh vua.”

15Vậy ông ta đã lên đường giao chiến ; cùng đi với ông, có một đoàn quân hùng mạnh gồm những kẻ vô đạo để tiếp tay với ông trả thù con cái Ít-ra-en.

16Khi chúng tiến đến gần đèo Bết Khô-rôn, thì ông Giu-đa đem theo một nhúm người ra nghênh chiến.

17Vừa thấy đoàn quân đến nghênh chiến với mình, những người này nói với ông Giu-đa : “Chúng ta chỉ có một nhúm người thì làm sao có thể đương đầu nổi với một số đông hùng mạnh như thế kia ? Chúng ta lại mệt lử, vì cả ngày nay chưa ăn uống gì.”

18Ông Giu-đa nói : “Nhiều người mà bị rơi vào tay một ít người, chuyện đó cũng dễ thôi ! Vả lại, đối với Trời, dùng nhiều người hay ít người mà cứu thoát cũng chẳng khác nhau.

19Bởi vì người ta thắng trận không phải nhờ số quân đông đảo, nhưng là nhờ Trời ban sức mạnh cho.

20Chúng nó đến đánh chúng ta, thật bạo ngược gian tà, nhằm tiêu diệt chúng ta, và vợ con chúng ta, rồi cướp bóc chúng ta ;

21còn chúng ta, chúng ta giao chiến để bảo toàn sinh mạng và các tập tục của chúng ta.

22Chính Trời sẽ nghiền nát chúng nó trước mặt chúng ta ; vậy anh em đừng sợ !”

23Nói xong, ông bất thần xông vào chúng. Xê-rôn cùng với đoàn quân bị nghiền nát trước mặt ông.

24Quân Ít-ra-en đuổi theo chúng từ Bết Khô-rôn cho đến đồng bằng. Khoảng tám trăm người bọn chúng đã ngã gục ; số còn lại chạy trốn sang đất người Phi-li-tinh.

25Thiên hạ bắt đầu sợ ông Giu-đa và các anh em. Các dân tộc chung quanh đều kinh hãi.

26Tiếng tăm ông Giu-đa đồn đến tai vua. Chư dân bàn tán về những trận đánh của ông.

27Nghe biết những chuyện đó, vua An-ti-ô-khô đùng đùng nổi giận, sai người đi tập hợp toàn thể quân đội trong vương quốc thành một đoàn quân rất hùng hậu.

28Vua mở kho báu, phát lương cả năm cho quân đội, và truyền lệnh cho họ phải sẵn sàng ứng phó với mọi tình huống.

29Vậy khi vua thấy bạc trong các kho không đủ, phẩm vật các miền triều cống lại ít, do những mối bất hoà và tai ương vua gây ra trong xứ này vì đã dẹp bỏ các tục lệ có từ xưa,

30vua sợ không có gì để chi dùng và ban phát, như đã xảy ra nhiều lần, vì xưa nay vua vẫn là người hào phóng vượt hẳn các vua trước.

31Tâm hồn vua vô cùng bối rối ; vua quyết định sang Ba-tư lấy phẩm vật các miền triều cống và thu thật nhiều bạc.

32Vua để cho ông Ly-xi-a, một người danh giá và thuộc hoàng tộc, trông coi việc nước từ sông Êu-phơ-rát cho đến biên giới Ai-cập

33và nuôi nấng con vua là An-ti-ô-khô cho đến khi vua trở về.

34Vua trao cho ông một nửa số quân cùng với voi và truyền cho ông thi hành mọi quyết định của mình, nhất là về vấn đề dân cư ở Giu-đê và Giê-ru-sa-lem.

35Vua truyền cho ông đem quân đến đánh dân ấy, để đập tan và quét sạch lực lượng Ít-ra-en cũng như số còn sót lại ở Giê-ru-sa-lem, khiến chẳng ai nhắc đến họ ở nơi đó nữa ;

36rồi cho những người ngoại bang được đến định cư trong khắp lãnh thổ của họ, đồng thời chia đất họ thành từng phần.

37Vua đem theo một nửa số quân còn lại và năm một trăm bốn mươi bảy, vua rời kinh đô An-ti-ô-khi-a lên đường. Vua vượt sông Êu-phơ-rát và băng qua các miền thượng du.

38Ông Ly-xi-a đã chọn Pơ-tô-lê-mai con của Đô-ry-mê-nê, Ni-ca-no và Goóc-ghi-át, những người thế lực trong số các bạn hữu của vua

39và cùng với họ, ông sai bốn mươi ngàn bộ binh, bảy ngàn kỵ binh tiến đến xứ Giu-đa và tàn phá miền ấy theo lệnh của vua.

40Họ ra đi cùng với cả đoàn quân và đến đóng trại ở gần Em-mau, thuộc miền Sơ-phê-la.

41Đám con buôn trong miền ấy nghe đồn về chúng, liền đem theo rất nhiều vàng bạc và cả xích sắt, đến chỗ đóng quân để mua con cái Ít-ra-en làm nô lệ. Một đội quân Xy-ri và Phi-li-tinh cũng tiến đến nhập đoàn với chúng.

42Ông Giu-đa và các anh em thấy tai hoạ gia tăng, quân đội ngoại bang chiếm đóng lãnh thổ, đồng thời được biết lệnh vua truyền phải tiêu diệt hoàn toàn dân Ít-ra-en,

43họ bảo nhau : “Ta phải phục hồi dân ta đang bị suy sụp và hãy chiến đấu để bảo vệ dân tộc và Nơi Thánh của ta.”

44Cộng đoàn được triệu tập để chuẩn bị giao chiến, để cầu nguyện và nài xin lòng trắc ẩn.

45đã im bặt tiếng kèn tiếng sáo.

46Vậy người Do-thái họp nhau lại và kéo đến Mít-pa, đối diện với Giê-ru-sa-lem, vì ở đó trước kia có một nơi cho người Ít-ra-en cầu nguyện.

47Ngày hôm ấy, họ ăn chay, mặc áo vải thô, rắc tro lên đầu và xé áo mình ra.

48Họ mở sách Luật để xem phải làm thế nào, giống như dân ngoại vẫn thỉnh vấn các ngẫu tượng.

49Họ mang theo y phục vẫn dùng khi tế tự cũng như của đầu mùa và thuế thập phân ; lại đưa những người có lời khấn na-dia đến, khi những người này đã mãn thời kỳ khấn đặc biệt.

50Họ lớn tiếng kêu lên Trời rằng : “Chúng con phải làm gì cho những người này, phải dẫn đưa họ đi đâu ?

51Bởi vì Nơi Thánh của Ngài đã bị giày xéo và ra ô uế, các tư tế của Ngài phải chịu cảnh tang tóc và nếm mùi ô nhục.

52Này các dân ngoại hùa nhau chống lại chúng con nhằm tiêu diệt chúng con. Chính Ngài biết những điều chúng đang toan tính chống lại chúng con.

53Làm sao chúng con có thể đương đầu với chúng nếu chính Ngài không ra tay phù trợ ?”

54Rồi họ thổi kèn và kêu lớn tiếng.

55Sau đó, ông Giu-đa cắt đặt những người chỉ huy dân quân : điều khiển một ngàn, một trăm, năm mươi, mười người.

56Còn những người vừa mới xây nhà, cưới vợ hoặc mới trồng được vườn nho, hay những người nhát gan, thì ông bảo họ về nhà, đúng như Lề Luật dạy.

57Bấy giờ đoàn quân lên đường và đến đóng trại ở phía nam Em-mau.

58Ông Giu-đa nói với họ : “Anh em hãy vũ trang, hãy tỏ ra là những người can đảm ! Hãy sẵn sàng để sáng mai giao chiến với dân ngoại này, những dân đã hùa nhau chống lại chúng ta nhằm tiêu diệt chúng ta và Nơi Thánh của chúng ta,

59vì thà chết ngoài mặt trận còn hơn là phải chứng kiến những tai hoạ mà dân tộc và Nơi Thánh của chúng ta phải gánh chịu.

60Trời muốn sao, xin Người làm như vậy !”
