2 Kings

1Josiah was eight years old when he began to reign, and he reigned thirty-one years in Jerusalem. His mother’s name was Jedidah the daughter of Adaiah of Bozkath.

2He did that which was right in the LORD’s eyes, and walked in all the ways of David his father, and didn’t turn away to the right hand or to the left.

3In the eighteenth year of King Josiah, the king sent Shaphan, the son of Azaliah the son of Meshullam, the scribe, to the LORD’s house, saying,

4“Go up to Hilkiah the high priest, that he may count the money which is brought into the LORD’s house, which the keepers of the threshold have gathered of the people.

5Let them deliver it into the hand of the workers who have the oversight of the LORD’s house; and let them give it to the workers who are in the LORD’s house, to repair the damage to the house,

6to the carpenters, and to the builders, and to the masons, and for buying timber and cut stone to repair the house.

7However, no accounting shall be asked of them for the money delivered into their hand, for they deal faithfully.”

8Hilkiah the high priest said to Shaphan the scribe, “I have found the book of the law in the LORD’s house.” Hilkiah delivered the book to Shaphan, and he read it.

9Shaphan the scribe came to the king, and brought the king word again, and said, “Your servants have emptied out the money that was found in the house, and have delivered it into the hands of the workmen who have the oversight of the LORD’s house.”

10Shaphan the scribe told the king, saying, “Hilkiah the priest has delivered a book to me.” Then Shaphan read it before the king.

11When the king had heard the words of the book of the law, he tore his clothes.

12The king commanded Hilkiah the priest, Ahikam the son of Shaphan, Achbor the son of Micaiah, Shaphan the scribe, and Asaiah the king’s servant, saying,

13“Go inquire of the LORD for me, and for the people, and for all Judah, concerning the words of this book that is found; for great is the LORD’s wrath that is kindled against us, because our fathers have not listened to the words of this book, to do according to all that which is written concerning us.”

14So Hilkiah the priest, Ahikam, Achbor, Shaphan, and Asaiah went to Huldah the prophetess, the wife of Shallum the son of Tikvah, the son of Harhas, keeper of the wardrobe (now she lived in Jerusalem in the second quarter); and they talked with her.

15She said to them, “The LORD the God of Israel says, ‘Tell the man who sent you to me,

16“The LORD says, ‘Behold, I will bring evil on this place and on its inhabitants, even all the words of the book which the king of Judah has read.

17Because they have forsaken me and have burned incense to other gods, that they might provoke me to anger with all the work of their hands, therefore my wrath shall be kindled against this place, and it will not be quenched.’”

18But to the king of Judah, who sent you to inquire of the LORD, tell him, “The LORD the God of Israel says, ‘Concerning the words which you have heard,

19because your heart was tender, and you humbled yourself before the LORD when you heard what I spoke against this place and against its inhabitants, that they should become a desolation and a curse, and have torn your clothes and wept before me, I also have heard you,’ says the LORD.

20‘Therefore behold, I will gather you to your fathers, and you will be gathered to your grave in peace. Your eyes will not see all the evil which I will bring on this place.’”’” So they brought this message back to the king.

Giô-si-a Cai Trị Giu-đa

1Lúc lên làm vua, Giô-si-a chỉ mới tám tuổi, và làm vua ba mươi mốt năm tại Giê-ru-sa-lem. Mẹ Giô-si-a là Giê-đi-đa, con của A-đa-gia ở Bốt-cát.

2Vua làm điều thiện trước mặt Chúa Hằng Hữu, noi gương Đa-vít tổ tiên mình không sai lạc.

3Năm thứ mười tám đời Giô-si-a, vua sai Thư ký Sa-phan, con A-xa-lia, cháu Mê-su-lam, đến Đền Thờ Chúa Hằng Hữu và dặn rằng:

4Hãy đi gặp thầy thượng tế Hinh-kia và nói với ông ta: “Kiểm tra số bạc dân chúng đem lên Đền Thờ dâng lên Chúa Hằng Hữu;

5rồi đem bạc này giao cho các giám thị Đền Thờ để họ sửa sang Đền Thờ Chúa Hằng Hữu.

6Đó là những thợ mộc, thợ xây cất, và thợ hồ để họ mua gỗ và đá mà sửa chữa Đền.

7Vì các giám thị là những người trung thực, nên đừng buộc họ giữ sổ sách chi tiêu.”

Hinh-kia Tìm Được Kinh Luật

8Một ngày nọ, thầy thượng tế Hinh-kia báo cho Thư ký Sa-phan hay: “Tôi tìm được quyển Kinh Luật trong Đền Thờ Chúa Hằng Hữu rồi!” Nói xong, ông trao sách cho Sa-phan. Sa-phan lấy đọc.

9Khi trở về, Sa-phan phúc trình với vua như sau: “Chúng tôi đã thu thập số bạc, đem giao cho các giám thị Đền thờ của Chúa Hằng Hữu như lời vua dặn.”

10Ông nói tiếp: “Thầy Tế lễ Hinh-kia có đưa cho tôi quyển sách này.” Và ông đọc cho vua nghe.

11Nghe xong các lời của sách Luật Pháp, vua xé áo mình.

12Rồi ra lệnh cho Thầy Tế lễ Hinh-kia, Thư ký Sa-phan, A-hi-cam, con Sa-phan, Ách-bô, con Mi-ca-gia, và A-sa-gia, tôi tớ mình như sau:

13“Xin các ông vì tôi, vì dân chúng, vì đất nước Giu-đa, đi cầu hỏi Chúa Hằng Hữu về những lời chép trong sách mới tìm được này. Chắc Chúa Hằng Hữu giận chúng ta lắm, vì từ đời tổ tiên ta đến nay, sách luật này đã không được tôn trọng.”

14Vậy, Thầy Tế lễ Hinh-kia cùng đi với Sa-phan, A-hi-cam, Ách-bô, và A-sa-gia đến Quận Nhì thành Giê-ru-sa-lem tìm nữ Tiên tri Hun-đa, vợ Sa-lum, người giữ áo lễ, con Tiếc-va, cháu Hạt-ha, để trình bày sự việc.

15Bà truyền lại cho họ lời của Chúa Hằng Hữu, Đức Chúa Trời của Ít-ra-ên như sau: “Hãy nói với người sai các ngươi đến đây:

16Ta sẽ giáng họa trên đất và dân này, đúng theo điều được ghi trong sách luật của Giu-đa.

17Vì dân Ta đã từ bỏ Ta, đốt hương cho các thần khác, chọc Ta giận, và Ta sẽ giận đất này không nguôi.

18Còn về vua của Giu-đa, là người đã sai các ông đi cầu hỏi Chúa Hằng Hữu, hãy nói với người ấy rằng: Chúa Hằng Hữu, Đức Chúa Trời của Ít-ra-ên phán thế này:

19Riêng phần ngươi, vì ngươi nhận biết lỗi lầm, hành động khiêm nhu trước mặt Chúa Hằng Hữu khi nghe đọc lời Ta nói về đất này sẽ bị bỏ hoang và nguyền rủa, ngươi đã xé áo mình, khóc lóc trước mặt Ta, nên Ta nghe lời cầu nguyện ngươi.

20Ta sẽ cho ngươi qua đời trong lúc còn hòa bình, và không thấy tai họa Ta giáng xuống đất này.” Rồi, họ trình lại những lời này cho vua.
