Phao-lô trên Đảo Man-ta

1Thoát nạn xong, chúng tôi được biết đây là đảo Man-ta.

2Thổ dân tiếp đãi chúng tôi rất niềm nở. Trời đang mưa gió lạnh lẽo, họ đốt lửa bên bờ biển và tiếp đón chúng tôi.

3Phao-lô gom một bó củi bỏ vào lửa, một con rắn độc bị nóng bò ra, cắn tay ông.

4Nhìn thấy rắn đeo nơi cánh tay Phao-lô, thổ dân bảo nhau: “Anh này đúng là kẻ sát nhân, dù khỏi chết chìm ngoài biển, lưới trời cũng không thoát được!”

5Nhưng Phao-lô rảy con rắn vào lửa, và không hề hấn gì.

6Thổ dân tưởng ông sẽ bị sưng phù hoặc ngã chết tức khắc, nhưng đợi lâu chẳng thấy gì, họ đổi ý cho rằng ông là thần thánh.

7Cạnh bãi biển là khu đất của chúa đảo Búp-liêu. Ông tiếp đãi chúng tôi thật nồng hậu trong ba ngày.

Phao-lô Đến La Mã

11Ba tháng sau khi đắm tàu, chúng tôi xuống một chiếc tàu khác trú tại đảo suốt mùa Đông. Tàu từ đảo A-léc-xan-ri-a đến, mũi tàu có chạm hai vị thần song sinh Cát-tơ và Pôn-lút.

13Từ đó đi vòng lên Rê-ghi-um. Ngày sau, gió nam bắt đầu thổi, nên chạy thêm một ngày nữa chúng tôi đến Bu-tô-li.

14Các anh chị em tín hữu tại đây mời chúng tôi ở lại một tuần lễ. Sau đó chúng tôi đến La Mã.

15Anh chị em tín hữu thủ đô La Mã nghe tin, liền ra công trường Áp-bi-u và Ba Quán đón tiếp. Nhìn thấy anh chị em, Phao-lô cảm tạ Đức Chúa Trời và tinh thần được phấn khởi.

16Đến La Mã, Phao-lô được phép ở đâu tùy ý, chỉ có một người lính canh giữ.

Phao-lô Giảng Dạy tại La Mã

17Ba ngày sau, Phao-lô mời các lãnh tụ Do Thái đến họp. Ông giải thích: “Thưa các ông, tôi chẳng làm điều gì phản dân hại nước, hay trái với tục lệ tổ tiên, nhưng tôi bị bắt tại Giê-ru-sa-lem và giao nộp cho người La Mã.

18Người La Mã xét thấy tôi không phạm tội gì đáng bị tử hình, muốn trả tự do cho tôi.

19Nhưng một số lãnh đạo Do Thái phản đối, nên tôi buộc lòng phải khiếu nại lên Sê-sa, chứ không phải tôi đến đây tố cáo dân tộc tôi.

20Vì thế tôi mời các ông đến giáp mặt chuyện trò. Chính vì niềm hy vọng của dân tộc Ít-ra-ên mà tôi mang xiềng xích này.”

21Họ đáp: “Chúng tôi chẳng nhận được thư từ gì từ xứ Giu-đê nói về anh, cũng chẳng có ai từ Giê-ru-sa-lem đến đây tố cáo anh cả.

22Tuy nhiên chúng tôi mong được nghe anh trình bày những gì anh tin, vì chúng tôi biết Đạo này bị phản đối khắp nơi.”

25Thấy họ bất đồng ý kiến với nhau và sửa soạn ra về, Phao-lô kết luận: “Quả đúng như lời Chúa Thánh Linh đã dùng tiên tri Y-sai phán dạy:

26‘Hãy đến nói với dân này: Các ngươi nghe điều Ta nóimà các ngươi không hiểu.Các ngươi thấy điều Ta làmmà các ngươi không nhận biết.

27Vì lòng dân này chai lì,đôi tai nghễnh ngãng, và đôi mắt khép kín—nên chúng không thể thấy,tai không thể nghe, lòng không thể hiểu,và chúng không thể quay về với Tađể được Ta chữa lành cho.’

28Tôi xin loan báo cho các anh biết: Đạo cứu rỗi của Đức Chúa Trời đã được truyền giảng cho dân ngoại và họ sẽ tin nhận.”

1And having been saved, then they knew that the island is called Melita,

2and the foreigners were shewing us no ordinary kindness, for having kindled a fire, they received us all, because of the pressing rain, and because of the cold;

3but Paul having gathered together a quantity of sticks, and having laid [them] upon the fire, a viper — out of the heat having come — did fasten on his hand.

4And when the foreigners saw the beast hanging from his hand, they said unto one another, 'Certainly this man is a murderer, whom, having been saved out of the sea, the justice did not suffer to live;'

5he then, indeed, having shaken off the beast into the fire, suffered no evil,

6and they were expecting him to be about to be inflamed, or to fall down suddenly dead, and they, expecting [it] a long time, and seeing nothing uncommon happening to him, changing [their] minds, said he was a god.

7And in the neighbourhood of that place were lands of the principal man of the island, by name Publius, who, having received us, three days did courteously lodge [us];

8and it came to pass, the father of Publius with feverish heats and dysentery pressed, was laid, unto whom Paul having entered, and having prayed, having laid [his] hands on him, healed him;

9this, therefore, being done, the others also in the island having infirmities were coming and were healed;

10who also with many honours did honour us, and we setting sail — they were lading [us] with the things that were necessary.

11And after three months, we set sail in a ship (that had wintered in the isle) of Alexandria, with the sign Dioscuri,

12and having landed at Syracuse, we remained three days,

13thence having gone round, we came to Rhegium, and after one day, a south wind having sprung up, the second [day] we came to Puteoli;

14where, having found brethren, we were called upon to remain with them seven days, and thus to Rome we came;

15and thence, the brethren having heard the things concerning us, came forth to meet us, unto Appii Forum, and Three Taverns — whom Paul having seen, having given thanks to God, took courage.

16And when we came to Rome, the centurion delivered up the prisoners to the captain of the barrack, but Paul was suffered to remain by himself, with the soldier guarding him.

17And it came to pass after three days, Paul called together those who are the principal men of the Jews, and they having come together, he said unto them: 'Men, brethren, I — having done nothing contrary to the people, or to the customs of the fathers — a prisoner from Jerusalem, was delivered up to the hands of the Romans;

18who, having examined me, were wishing to release [me], because of their being no cause of death in me,

19and the Jews having spoken against [it], I was constrained to appeal unto Caesar — not as having anything to accuse my nation of;

20for this cause, therefore, I called for you to see and to speak with [you], for because of the hope of Israel with this chain I am bound.'

21And they said unto him, 'We did neither receive letters concerning thee from Judea, nor did any one who came of the brethren declare or speak any evil concerning thee,

22and we think it good from thee to hear what thou dost think, for, indeed, concerning this sect it is known to us that everywhere it is spoken against;'

23and having appointed him a day, they came, more of them unto him, to the lodging, to whom he was expounding, testifying fully the reign of God, persuading them also of the things concerning Jesus, both from the law of Moses, and the prophets, from morning till evening,

24and, some, indeed, were believing the things spoken, and some were not believing.

25And not being agreed with one another, they were going away, Paul having spoken one word — 'Well did the Holy Spirit speak through Isaiah the prophet unto our fathers,

26saying, Go on unto this people and say, With hearing ye shall hear, and ye shall not understand, and seeing ye shall see, and ye shall not perceive,

27for made gross was the heart of this people, and with the ears they heard heavily, and their eyes they did close, lest they may see with the eyes, and with the heart may understand, and be turned back, and I may heal them.

28'Be it known, therefore, to you, that to the nations was sent the salvation of God, these also will hear it;'

29and he having said these things, the Jews went away, having much disputation among themselves;

30and Paul remained an entire two years in his own hired [house], and was receiving all those coming in unto him,

31preaching the reign of God, and teaching the things concerning the Lord Jesus Christ with all boldness — unforbidden.
