Reproches aux chefs et aux rois

1Lorsque je voulais guérir Israël, L’iniquité d’Éphraïm et la méchanceté de Samarie se sont révélées, Car ils ont agi frauduleusement; Le voleur est arrivé, la bande s’est répandue au dehors.

2Ils ne se disent pas dans leur cœur Que je me souviens de toute leur méchanceté; Maintenant leurs œuvres les entourent, Elles sont devant ma face.

3Ils réjouissent le roi par leur méchanceté, Et les chefs par leurs mensonges.

4Ils sont tous adultères, Semblables à un four chauffé par le boulanger: Il cesse d’attiser le feu Depuis qu’il a pétri la pâte jusqu’à ce qu’elle soit levée.

5Au jour de notre roi, Les chefs se rendent malades par les excès du vin; Le roi tend la main aux moqueurs.

6Ils appliquent aux embûches leur cœur pareil à un four; Toute la nuit dort leur boulanger, Et au matin le four brûle comme un feu embrasé.

7Ils sont tous ardents comme un four, Et ils dévorent leurs juges; Tous leurs rois tombent: Aucun d’eux ne m’invoque.

8Éphraïm se mêle avec les peuples, Éphraïm est un gâteau qui n’a pas été retourné.

9Des étrangers consument sa force, Et il ne s’en doute pas; La vieillesse s’empare de lui, Et il ne s’en doute pas.

10L’orgueil d’Israël témoigne contre lui; Ils ne reviennent pas à l’Éternel, leur Dieu, Et ils ne le cherchent pas, malgré tout cela.

11Éphraïm est comme une colombe stupide, sans intelligence; Ils implorent l’Égypte, ils vont en Assyrie.

12S’ils partent, j’étendrai sur eux mon filet, Je les précipiterai comme les oiseaux du ciel; Je les châtierai, comme ils en ont été avertis dans leur assemblée.

13Malheur à eux, parce qu’ils me fuient! Ruine sur eux, parce qu’ils me sont infidèles! Je voudrais les sauver, Mais ils disent contre moi des paroles mensongères.

14Ils ne crient pas vers moi dans leur cœur, Mais ils se lamentent sur leur couche; Ils se rassemblent pour avoir du blé et du moût, Et ils s’éloignent de moi.

15Je les ai châtiés, j’ai fortifié leurs bras; Et ils méditent le mal contre moi.

16Ce n’est pas au Très-Haut qu’ils retournent; Ils sont comme un arc trompeur. Leurs chefs tomberont par l’épée, A cause de l’insolence de leur langue. C’est ce qui les rendra un objet de risée dans le pays d’Égypte.

1'When I give healing to Israel, Then revealed is the iniquity of Ephraim, And the wickedness of Samaria, For they have wrought falsehood, And a thief doth come in, Stript off hath a troop in the street,

2And they do not say to their heart, [That] all their evil I have remembered, Now compassed them have their doings, Over-against My face they have been.

3With their wickedness they make glad a king, And with their lies — princes.

4All of them [are] adulterers, Like a burning oven of a baker, He ceaseth from stirring up after kneading the dough, till its leavening.

5A day of our king! Princes have polluted themselves [with] the poison of wine, He hath drawn out his hand with scorners.

6For they have drawn near, As an oven [is] their heart, In their lying in wait all the night sleep doth their baker, Morning! he is burning as a flaming fire.

7All of them are warm as an oven, And they have devoured their judges, All their kings have fallen, There is none calling unto Me among them.

8Ephraim! among peoples he mixeth himself, Ephraim hath been a cake unturned.

9Devoured have strangers his power, And he hath not known, Also old age hath sprinkled [itself] on him, And he hath not known.

10And humbled hath been the excellency of Israel to his face, And they have not turned back unto Jehovah their God, Nor have they sought Him for all this.

11And Ephraim is as a simple dove without heart, Egypt they called on — [to] Asshur they have gone.

12When they go I spread over them My net, As the fowl of the heavens I bring them down, I chastise them as their company hath heard.

13Woe to them, for they wandered from Me, Destruction to them, for they transgressed against Me, And I — I ransom them, and they have spoken lies against Me,

14And have not cried unto Me with their heart, but howl on their beds, For corn and new wine they assemble themselves, They turn aside against Me.

15And I instructed — I strengthened their arms, And concerning Me they think evil!

16They turn back — not to the Most High, They have been as a deceitful bow, Fall by sword do their princes, From the insolence of their tongue, This [is] their derision in the land of Egypt!
