1Now the children of Reuben and the children of Gad had a very great multitude of cattle: and when they saw the land of Jazer, and the land of Gilead, that, behold, the place was a place for cattle;

2The children of Gad and the children of Reuben came and spake unto Moses, and to Eleazar the priest, and unto the princes of the congregation, saying,

3Ataroth, and Dibon, and Jazer, and Nimrah, and Heshbon, and Elealeh, and Shebam, and Nebo, and Beon,

4Even the country which the LORD smote before the congregation of Israel, is a land for cattle, and thy servants have cattle:

5Wherefore, said they, if we have found grace in thy sight, let this land be given unto thy servants for a possession, and bring us not over Jordan.

6¶ And Moses said unto the children of Gad and to the children of Reuben, Shall your brethren go to war, and shall ye sit here?

7And wherefore discourage ye the heart of the children of Israel from going over into the land which the LORD hath given them?

8Thus did your fathers, when I sent them from Kadesh-barnea to see the land.

9For when they went up unto the valley of Eshcol, and saw the land, they discouraged the heart of the children of Israel, that they should not go into the land which the LORD had given them.

10And the LORD’s anger was kindled the same time, and he sware, saying,

11Surely none of the men that came up out of Egypt, from twenty years old and upward, shall see the land which I sware unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob; because they have not wholly followed me:

12Save Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenezite, and Joshua the son of Nun: for they have wholly followed the LORD.

13And the LORD’s anger was kindled against Israel, and he made them wander in the wilderness forty years, until all the generation, that had done evil in the sight of the LORD, was consumed.

14And, behold, ye are risen up in your fathers’ stead, an increase of sinful men, to augment yet the fierce anger of the LORD toward Israel.

15For if ye turn away from after him, he will yet again leave them in the wilderness; and ye shall destroy all this people.

16¶ And they came near unto him, and said, We will build sheepfolds here for our cattle, and cities for our little ones:

17But we ourselves will go ready armed before the children of Israel, until we have brought them unto their place: and our little ones shall dwell in the fenced cities because of the inhabitants of the land.

18We will not return unto our houses, until the children of Israel have inherited every man his inheritance.

19For we will not inherit with them on yonder side Jordan, or forward; because our inheritance is fallen to us on this side Jordan eastward.

20¶ And Moses said unto them, If ye will do this thing, if ye will go armed before the LORD to war,

21And will go all of you armed over Jordan before the LORD, until he hath driven out his enemies from before him,

22And the land be subdued before the LORD: then afterward ye shall return, and be guiltless before the LORD, and before Israel; and this land shall be your possession before the LORD.

23But if ye will not do so, behold, ye have sinned against the LORD: and be sure your sin will find you out.

24Build you cities for your little ones, and folds for your sheep; and do that which hath proceeded out of your mouth.

25And the children of Gad and the children of Reuben spake unto Moses, saying, Thy servants will do as my lord commandeth.

26Our little ones, our wives, our flocks, and all our cattle, shall be there in the cities of Gilead:

27But thy servants will pass over, every man armed for war, before the LORD to battle, as my lord saith.

28So concerning them Moses commanded Eleazar the priest, and Joshua the son of Nun, and the chief fathers of the tribes of the children of Israel:

29And Moses said unto them, If the children of Gad and the children of Reuben will pass with you over Jordan, every man armed to battle, before the LORD, and the land shall be subdued before you; then ye shall give them the land of Gilead for a possession:

30But if they will not pass over with you armed, they shall have possessions among you in the land of Canaan.

31And the children of Gad and the children of Reuben answered, saying, As the LORD hath said unto thy servants, so will we do.

32We will pass over armed before the LORD into the land of Canaan, that the possession of our inheritance on this side Jordan may be ours.

33And Moses gave unto them, even to the children of Gad, and to the children of Reuben, and unto half the tribe of Manasseh the son of Joseph, the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites, and the kingdom of Og king of Bashan, the land, with the cities thereof in the coasts, even the cities of the country round about.

34¶ And the children of Gad built Dibon, and Ataroth, and Aroer,

35And Atroth, Shophan, and Jaazer, and Jogbehah,

36And Beth-nimrah, and Beth-haran, fenced cities: and folds for sheep.

37And the children of Reuben built Heshbon, and Elealeh, and Kirjathaim,

38And Nebo, and Baal-meon, (their names being changed,) and Shibmah: and gave other names unto the cities which they builded.

39And the children of Machir the son of Manasseh went to Gilead, and took it, and dispossessed the Amorite which was in it.

40And Moses gave Gilead unto Machir the son of Manasseh; and he dwelt therein.

41And Jair the son of Manasseh went and took the small towns thereof, and called them Havoth-jair.

42And Nobah went and took Kenath, and the villages thereof, and called it Nobah, after his own name.

1Con cái ông Rưu-vên và con cái ông Gát có nhiều đàn súc vật rất đông. Khi thấy rằng vùng Gia-de và vùng Ga-la-át là nơi thuận lợi cho việc chăn nuôi súc vật,

2họ đến thưa với ông Mô-sê, với tư tế E-la-da và các thủ lãnh cộng đồng :

3“Các thành A-ta-rốt, Đi-vôn, Gia-de, Nim-ra, Khét-bôn, En-a-lê, Xơ-vam, Nơ-vô và Bơ-ôn

4là vùng đất ĐỨC CHÚA đã đánh phạt trước cộng đồng Ít-ra-en, là vùng đất nuôi được súc vật. Mà các tôi tớ ngài lại có súc vật.”

5Họ nói tiếp : “Nếu chúng tôi được đẹp lòng ngài, thì xin ban cho các tôi tớ ngài vùng đất này làm sở hữu. Xin đừng để chúng tôi phải đi qua sông Gio-đan.”

6Ông Mô-sê nói với con cái ông Gát và con cái ông Rưu-vên : “Anh em của anh em phải ra chiến trường, mà anh em thì ở lại đây hay sao ?

7Tại sao anh em làm cho con cái Ít-ra-en phải nản lòng không muốn đi qua bên xứ mà ĐỨC CHÚA đã ban cho họ ?

8Cha ông anh em đã làm như thế, khi tôi sai họ đi từ Ca-đê Bác-nê-a để do thám xứ đó.

9Họ lên đến thung lũng Ét-côn ; họ do thám xứ đó, rồi làm cho con cái Ít-ra-en nản lòng, để họ không vào xứ mà ĐỨC CHÚA đã ban cho họ.

10Nên trong ngày đó, cơn thịnh nộ của ĐỨC CHÚA bừng cháy ; Người thề rằng :

11‘Nếu ngày nào những người đã lên từ Ai-cập, hai mươi tuổi trở lên, thấy đất mà Ta đã thề ban cho Áp-ra-ham, I-xa-ác và Gia-cóp..., vì chúng đã không trọn tình đi theo Ta ;

12chỉ trừ Ca-lếp, con ông Giơ-phun-ne, người Cơ-nát, và Giô-suê, con ông Nun, vì họ đã trọn tình đi theo ĐỨC CHÚA.’

13Cơn thịnh nộ của ĐỨC CHÚA bừng lên phạt Ít-ra-en, và Người đã bắt họ phải đi lang thang trong sa mạc bốn mươi năm, cho đến khi toàn thể thế hệ đã làm sự dữ trước mắt ĐỨC CHÚA đều chết hết.

14Này đây, hỡi nòi tội nhân, anh em thay thế cha ông mình mà nổi dậy, khiến cơn thịnh nộ của ĐỨC CHÚA đối với Ít-ra-en càng tăng lên !

15Nếu anh em quay lưng lại với Người, thì Người còn tiếp tục để Ít-ra-en lại trong sa mạc, và như thế, anh em sẽ làm cho tất cả dân này bị tiêu diệt.”

16Họ tiến đến gần ông Mô-sê và nói : “Chúng tôi sẽ làm ở đây bãi quây cho chiên cừu của chúng tôi, và xây thành thị cho con em chúng tôi.

17Còn chúng tôi sẽ cầm khí giới ngay và dẫn đầu con cái Ít-ra-en, cho tới khi chúng tôi đưa họ đến nơi thuộc về họ ; nhưng con em chúng tôi sẽ ở lại trong các thành kiên cố, để khỏi bị dân bản xứ tấn công.

18Chúng tôi sẽ không trở về nhà cho đến khi ai nấy trong dân Ít-ra-en đều được thừa hưởng phần gia nghiệp của mình.

19Quả thật, chúng tôi sẽ không chia phần gia nghiệp với họ bên kia sông Gio-đan hoặc xa hơn nữa, vì gia nghiệp bên này sông Gio-đan, ở phía đông, sẽ lọt về phần chúng tôi.”

20Ông Mô-sê nói với họ : “Nếu anh em thực hiện điều đó, nếu anh em cầm khí giới để ra trận trước nhan ĐỨC CHÚA,

21nếu trong số anh em, tất cả những người được vũ trang đi qua sông Gio-đan trước nhan ĐỨC CHÚA, \[và ở lại đó] cho đến khi Người đuổi địch thù đi khuất mắt Người,

22và nếu anh em chỉ trở về sau khi xứ ấy quy hàng trước nhan ĐỨC CHÚA, thì anh em được coi như đã làm xong nhiệm vụ đối với ĐỨC CHÚA, với Ít-ra-en, và vùng đất này sẽ là sở hữu của anh em trước nhan ĐỨC CHÚA.

23Nhưng nếu anh em không làm như thế, thì anh em sẽ đắc tội với ĐỨC CHÚA ; và anh em nên biết rằng chính anh em sẽ chuốc lấy tội đó cho mình.

24Anh em hãy xây thành cho con em và làm bãi quây cho chiên cừu, hãy thực hiện những gì miệng anh em đã nói.”

25Con cái ông Gát và con cái ông Rưu-vên thưa với ông Mô-sê : “Các tôi tớ ngài sẽ làm như lời ngài truyền.

26Vợ con, súc vật và mọi thú vật của chúng tôi sẽ ở đây, trong các thành Ga-la-át ;

27nhưng các tôi tớ ngài, mọi kẻ đã được vũ trang để ra trận, sẽ đi qua trước nhan ĐỨC CHÚA để chiến đấu, theo lời ngài đã nói.”

28Ông Mô-sê đã ban mệnh lệnh liên quan đến họ cho tư tế E-la-da, cho ông Giô-suê, con ông Nun, và cho những người đứng đầu các gia tộc của các chi tộc con cái Ít-ra-en.

29Ông Mô-sê nói với họ : “Nếu con cái ông Gát và con cái ông Rưu-vên, mọi kẻ đã được vũ trang để chiến đấu, cùng với anh em đi qua sông Gio-đan trước nhan ĐỨC CHÚA, và nếu anh em chinh phục được vùng đất đó, thì anh em sẽ cho họ đất Ga-la-át làm sở hữu.

30Nhưng nếu họ không chịu mang khí giới đi qua sông với anh em, thì họ sẽ phải nhận một phần đất làm sở hữu giữa anh em, trong xứ Ca-na-an.”

31Con cái ông Gát và con cái ông Rưu-vên thưa : “Điều ĐỨC CHÚA đã phán với các tôi tớ ngài, chúng tôi sẽ làm ;

32chính chúng tôi sẽ cầm khí giới đi qua xứ Ca-na-an trước nhan ĐỨC CHÚA ; và xin ngài cho chúng tôi được chiếm hữu phần đất bên này sông Gio-đan làm gia nghiệp.”

33Ông Mô-sê ban cho họ –nghĩa là cho con cái ông Gát, con cái ông Rưu-vên và một nửa chi tộc Mơ-na-se, con ông Giu-se– vương quốc của Xi-khôn, vua E-mô-ri, vương quốc của Ốc, vua Ba-san ; đó là vùng đất gồm các thành cùng với lãnh thổ của các thành ấy, thêm vào đó các thành của vùng đất chung quanh.

34Con cái ông Gát đã xây Đi-vôn, A-ta-rốt, A-rô-e,

35A-rốt Sô-phan, Gia-de, Gioóc-bô-ha,

36Bết Nim-ra, Bết Ha-ran, là những thành kiên cố ; họ cũng đã làm bãi quây cho chiên cừu.

37Con cái ông Rưu-vên cũng đã xây Khét-bôn, En-a-lê, Kia-gia-tha-gim,

38Nơ-vô, Ba-an Mơ-ôn (các thành này đã đổi tên) và Xíp-ma. Họ đặt tên cho các thành họ đã xây.

39Con cái ông Ma-khia, con ông Mơ-na-se, đi tới xứ Ga-la-át ; họ chiếm xứ đó và đuổi người E-mô-ri đang ở đấy.

40Ông Mô-sê cho ông Ma-khia là con ông Mơ-na-se, xứ Ga-la-át, và ông Ma-khia định cư tại đó.

41Ông Gia-ia, con ông Mơ-na-se, đi chiếm các trại của họ và đặt tên là trại của Gia-ia.

42Nô-vác đi chiếm Cơ-nát cùng các vùng phụ cận ; ông lấy tên mình là Nô-vác mà đặt cho chỗ đó.
