2 Samuel

1And it came to pass after this, that David enquired of the LORD, saying, Shall I go up into any of the cities of Judah? And the LORD said unto him, Go up. And David said, Whither shall I go up? And he said, Unto Hebron.

2So David went up thither, and his two wives also, Ahinoam the Jezreelitess, and Abigail Nabal’s wife the Carmelite.

3And his men that were with him did David bring up, every man with his household: and they dwelt in the cities of Hebron.

4And the men of Judah came, and there they anointed David king over the house of Judah. And they told David, saying, That the men of Jabesh-gilead were they that buried Saul.

5¶ And David sent messengers unto the men of Jabesh-gilead, and said unto them, Blessed be ye of the LORD, that ye have shewed this kindness unto your lord, even unto Saul, and have buried him.

6And now the LORD shew kindness and truth unto you: and I also will requite you this kindness, because ye have done this thing.

7Therefore now let your hands be strengthened, and be ye valiant: for your master Saul is dead, and also the house of Judah have anointed me king over them.

8¶ But Abner the son of Ner, captain of Saul’s host, took Ish-bosheth the son of Saul, and brought him over to Mahanaim;

9And made him king over Gilead, and over the Ashurites, and over Jezreel, and over Ephraim, and over Benjamin, and over all Israel.

10Ish-bosheth Saul’s son was forty years old when he began to reign over Israel, and reigned two years. But the house of Judah followed David.

11And the time that David was king in Hebron over the house of Judah was seven years and six months.

12¶ And Abner the son of Ner, and the servants of Ish-bosheth the son of Saul, went out from Mahanaim to Gibeon.

13And Joab the son of Zeruiah, and the servants of David, went out, and met together by the pool of Gibeon: and they sat down, the one on the one side of the pool, and the other on the other side of the pool.

14And Abner said to Joab, Let the young men now arise, and play before us. And Joab said, Let them arise.

15Then there arose and went over by number twelve of Benjamin, which pertained to Ish-bosheth the son of Saul, and twelve of the servants of David.

16And they caught every one his fellow by the head, and thrust his sword in his fellow’s side; so they fell down together: wherefore that place was called Helkath-hazzurim, which is in Gibeon.

17And there was a very sore battle that day; and Abner was beaten, and the men of Israel, before the servants of David.

18¶ And there were three sons of Zeruiah there, Joab, and Abishai, and Asahel: and Asahel was as light of foot as a wild roe.

19And Asahel pursued after Abner; and in going he turned not to the right hand nor to the left from following Abner.

20Then Abner looked behind him, and said, Art thou Asahel? And he answered, I am.

21And Abner said to him, Turn thee aside to thy right hand or to thy left, and lay thee hold on one of the young men, and take thee his armour. But Asahel would not turn aside from following of him.

22And Abner said again to Asahel, Turn thee aside from following me: wherefore should I smite thee to the ground? how then should I hold up my face to Joab thy brother?

23Howbeit he refused to turn aside: wherefore Abner with the hinder end of the spear smote him under the fifth rib, that the spear came out behind him; and he fell down there, and died in the same place: and it came to pass, that as many as came to the place where Asahel fell down and died stood still.

24Joab also and Abishai pursued after Abner: and the sun went down when they were come to the hill of Ammah, that lieth before Giah by the way of the wilderness of Gibeon.

25¶ And the children of Benjamin gathered themselves together after Abner, and became one troop, and stood on the top of an hill.

26Then Abner called to Joab, and said, Shall the sword devour for ever? knowest thou not that it will be bitterness in the latter end? how long shall it be then, ere thou bid the people return from following their brethren?

27And Joab said, As God liveth, unless thou hadst spoken, surely then in the morning the people had gone up every one from following his brother.

28So Joab blew a trumpet, and all the people stood still, and pursued after Israel no more, neither fought they any more.

29And Abner and his men walked all that night through the plain, and passed over Jordan, and went through all Bithron, and they came to Mahanaim.

30And Joab returned from following Abner: and when he had gathered all the people together, there lacked of David’s servants nineteen men and Asahel.

31But the servants of David had smitten of Benjamin, and of Abner’s men, so that three hundred and threescore men died.

32¶ And they took up Asahel, and buried him in the sepulchre of his father, which was in Beth-lehem. And Joab and his men went all night, and they came to Hebron at break of day.

1Sau đó, ông Đa-vít thỉnh ý ĐỨC CHÚA : “Con có nên đi lên một trong các thành Giu-đa không ?” ĐỨC CHÚA phán với ông : “Cứ lên.” Ông Đa-vít nói : “Con phải lên đâu ?” Người phán : “Lên Khép-rôn.”

2Ông Đa-vít lên đó, cùng với hai bà vợ, là bà A-khi-nô-am người Gít-rơ-en, và bà A-vi-ga-gin, vợ ông Na-van người Các-men.

3Còn những người đi theo ông, ông Đa-vít cũng đưa họ lên, mỗi người cùng với gia đình mình, và họ ở các thành vùng Khép-rôn.

4Người ta báo tin cho vua Đa-vít rằng : “Người Gia-vết miền Ga-la-át đã chôn cất vua Sa-un.”

5Vua Đa-vít sai sứ giả đến với người Gia-vết miền Ga-la-át và nói với họ : “Xin ĐỨC CHÚA chúc phúc cho anh em, vì anh em đã làm việc nghĩa ấy với chúa thượng của anh em là vua Sa-un, và đã chôn cất vua.

6Giờ đây, xin ĐỨC CHÚA lấy tình thương và lòng thành tín mà đối xử với anh em. Cả tôi nữa, tôi cũng sẽ lấy lòng tốt như vậy mà đối xử với anh em, vì anh em đã làm điều ấy.

7Giờ đây, anh em hãy mạnh bạo lên, hãy tỏ ra là những người can đảm, vì chúa thượng của anh em là vua Sa-un đã chết. Còn tôi thì nhà Giu-đa đã xức dầu tấn phong làm vua của họ.

8Ông Áp-ne là con ông Ne và là tướng chỉ huy quân đội vua Sa-un, đã rước ông Ít-bô-sét, con vua Sa-un, đưa sang Ma-kha-na-gim,

9và tôn làm vua miền Ga-la-át, dân A-su-ri, miền Gít-rơ-en, Ép-ra-im, Ben-gia-min và toàn thể Ít-ra-en.

10Ông Ít-bô-sét, con vua Sa-un, được bốn mươi tuổi khi lên làm vua Ít-ra-en, và trị vì hai năm. Chỉ có nhà Giu-đa theo vua Đa-vít.

11Thời gian vua Đa-vít làm vua tại Khép-rôn, cai trị nhà Giu-đa, là bảy năm sáu tháng.

12Ông Áp-ne, con ông Ne, cùng bề tôi vua Ít-bô-sét, con vua Sa-un, ra quân từ Ma-kha-na-gim, tiến về phía Ghíp-ôn.

14Ông Áp-ne nói với ông Giô-áp : “Các trai tráng hãy đứng dậy và đấu trước mặt chúng ta !” Ông Giô-áp nói : “Họ hãy đứng dậy !”

15Họ đứng lên và đi qua cho người ta đếm : mười hai người Ben-gia-min thuộc phía vua Ít-bô-sét, con vua Sa-un, mười hai người trong số bề tôi vua Đa-vít.

17Ngày hôm ấy, cuộc giao tranh diễn ra rất ác liệt. Ông Áp-ne và người Ít-ra-en bị bề tôi vua Đa-vít đánh bại.

18Ở đó có ba con trai bà Xơ-ru-gia là ông Giô-áp, ông A-vi-sai và ông A-xa-hên. Ông A-xa-hên có đôi chân lanh lẹ như sơn dương ngoài đồng.

19Ông A-xa-hên đuổi theo ông Áp-ne, chạy sau ông ấy, không trệch bên phải bên trái.

20Ông Áp-ne ngoái lại và hỏi : “Có phải mày đó không, A-xa-hên ?” Ông này trả lời : “Tao đây.”

21Ông Áp-ne bảo ông ấy : “Mày hãy đi trệch sang bên phải hay bên trái, túm lấy một đứa trong các đầy tớ kia và lột lấy áo của nó.” Nhưng ông A-xa-hên không chịu ngưng đuổi theo ông ấy.

22Ông Áp-ne lại bảo ông A-xa-hên lần nữa rằng : “Mày hãy ngưng đuổi theo tao. Mày muốn tao quật mày xuống đất sao ? Tao sẽ còn mặt mũi nào mà nhìn Giô-áp, anh mày được ?”

24Ông Giô-áp và ông A-vi-sai đuổi theo ông Áp-ne. Khi mặt trời lặn, họ tới đồi Am-ma, ở phía đông Ghi-ác, trên đường đi sa mạc Ghíp-ôn.

25Con cái Ben-gia-min tập hợp lại sau lưng ông Áp-ne, họ làm thành một khối và đóng trên một đỉnh đồi.

26Ông Áp-ne gọi ông Giô-áp và nói : “Chẳng lẽ cứ để gươm chém giết mãi sao ? Ông không biết rằng rốt cuộc chỉ là cay với đắng ư ? Đến bao giờ ông mới bảo quân binh thôi không đuổi theo anh em của họ nữa ?”

27Ông Giô-áp nói : “Có Thiên Chúa hằng sống ! Ông mà không nói, thì mãi đến sáng quân binh mới thôi không đuổi theo anh em của họ.”

28Ông Giô-áp cho thổi tù và, tất cả quân binh dừng lại, không đuổi theo Ít-ra-en nữa, và họ không còn tiếp tục giao chiến.

29Ông Áp-ne và người của ông đi trong vùng A-ra-va suốt đêm ấy, họ sang sông Gio-đan, đi xuyên qua cả vùng Bít-rôn và tới Ma-kha-na-gim.

30Ông Giô-áp thôi không đuổi theo ông Áp-ne ; ông tập hợp toàn thể quân binh lại ; trong số bề tôi vua Đa-vít thiếu mười chín người và ông A-xa-hên.

31Bề tôi vua Đa-vít đã hạ được ba trăm sáu mươi người trong số người Ben-gia-min và người của ông Áp-ne, và những người này đã chết.

32Người ta mang ông A-xa-hên đi và chôn cất ông trong mộ của cha ông, tại Bê-lem. Ông Giô-áp và người của ông đi suốt đêm, và khi trời sáng thì đến Khép-rôn.
