Judges

1After Abimelech there arose a ruler in Israel, Thola son of Phua the uncle of Abimelech, a man of Issachar, who dwelt in Samir of mount Ephraim:

2And he judged Israel three and twenty years, and he died and was buried in Samir.

3To him succeeded Jair the Galaadite, who judged Israel for two and twenty years.

4Having thirty sons that rode on thirty ass colts, and were princes of thirty cities, which from his name were called Havoth Jair, that is, the towns of Jair, until this present day in the land of Galaad.

5And Jair died: and was buried in the place which was called Camon.

6But the children of Israel, adding new sins to their old ones, did evil in the sight of the Lord, and served idols, Baalim and Astaroth, and the gods of Syria and of Sidon and of Moab and of the children of Ammon and of the Philistines: and they left the Lord, and did not serve him.

7And the Lord being angry with them, delivered them into the hands of the Philistines and of the children of Ammon.

8And they were afflicted, and grievously oppressed for eighteen years, all they that dwelt beyond the Jordan in the land of the Amorrhite, who is in Galaad:

9Insomuch that the children of Ammon passing over the Jordan, wasted Juda and Benjamin and Ephraim: and Israel was distressed exceedingly.

10And they cried to the Lord, and said: We have sinned against thee, because we have forsaken the Lord our God, and have served Baalim.

11And the Lord said to them: Did not the Egyptians and the Amorrhites, and the children of Ammon and the Philistines,

12The Sidonians also and Amalec and Chanaan oppress you, and you cried to me, and I delivered you out of their hand?

13And yet you have forsaken me, and have worshipped strange gods: therefore I will deliver you no more:

14Go and call upon the gods which you have chosen: let them deliver you in the time of distress.

15And the children of Israel said to the Lord: We have sinned, do thou unto us whatsoever pleaseth thee: only deliver us this time.

16And saying these things, they cast away out of their coasts all the idols of strange gods and served the Lord their God: and he was touched with their miseries.

17And the children of Ammon shouting together, pitched their tents in Galaad: against whom the children of Israel assembled themselves together and camped in Maspha.

18And the princes of Galaad said one to another: Whosoever of us shall first begin to fight against the children of Ammon, he shall be the leader of the people of Galaad.

1Sau A-vi-me-léc, có ông Tô-la con ông Pu-a, cháu ông Đô-đô, người Ít-xa-kha, đã xuất hiện để cứu Ít-ra-en. Ông cư ngụ tại Sa-mia, vùng núi Ép-ra-im.

2Ông làm thủ lãnh Ít-ra-en được hai mươi ba năm, thì qua đời và được chôn cất tại Sa-mia.

3Sau ông Tô-la, thì có ông Gia-ia, người Ga-la-át, xuất hiện, làm thủ lãnh Ít-ra-en hai mươi hai năm.

4Ông có ba mươi người con, cỡi ba mươi con lừa và coi ba mươi thành, mà người ta đặt tên là Kha-vốt Gia-ia ; những thành đó còn cho tới ngày nay trong đất Ga-la-át.

5Rồi ông Gia-ia qua đời và được chôn cất tại Ca-môn.

6Con cái Ít-ra-en lại làm điều dữ trái mắt ĐỨC CHÚA và làm tôi các thần Ba-an và Át-tô-rét, các thần của người A-ram, các thần của người Xi-đôn, các thần của người Mô-áp, các thần của con cái Am-mon và các thần của người Phi-li-tinh ; họ đã lìa bỏ ĐỨC CHÚA và không làm tôi Người nữa.

7ĐỨC CHÚA nổi cơn thịnh nộ với Ít-ra-en và đã trao họ vào tay người Phi-li-tinh và vào tay con cái Am-mon.

8Trong thời ấy, suốt mười tám năm, chúng hành hạ và áp bức con cái Ít-ra-en, tức là toàn thể con cái Ít-ra-en ở bên kia sông Gio-đan, trong đất người E-mô-ri tại Ga-la-át.

9Con cái Am-mon vượt sông Gio-đan để giao chiến với cả Giu-đa, Ben-gia-min và nhà Ép-ra-im nữa, khiến Ít-ra-en phải lâm cảnh khốn cùng.

10Bấy giờ con cái Ít-ra-en mới kêu lên ĐỨC CHÚA rằng : “Chúng con đã xúc phạm đến Ngài, bởi vì chúng con đã lìa bỏ Thiên Chúa của chúng con mà làm tôi các Ba-an.”

11ĐỨC CHÚA phán với con cái Ít-ra-en : “Khi người Ai-cập, người E-mô-ri, con cái Am-mon, người Phi-li-tinh,

12người Xi-đôn, người A-ma-lếch và người Ma-đi-an áp bức các ngươi, và các ngươi kêu lên Ta, thì Ta đã chẳng cứu các ngươi khỏi tay chúng sao ?

13Nhưng các ngươi đã lìa bỏ Ta và làm tôi các thần khác ; vì thế, Ta sẽ không cứu các ngươi nữa.

14Đi mà kêu lên các thần các ngươi đã chọn ; chúng sẽ cứu các ngươi lúc các ngươi bị cơ cực !”

15Con cái Ít-ra-en mới thưa cùng ĐỨC CHÚA : “Chúng con đã phạm tội. Xin Ngài cứ xử với chúng con sao cho đẹp mắt Ngài ; nhưng hôm nay xin cứu chúng con.”

16Họ cất bỏ, không giữ lại những thần ngoại bang nữa, và họ làm tôi ĐỨC CHÚA, vì thế Người không dằn lòng được trước sự đau khổ của Ít-ra-en.

17Con cái Am-mon tập họp lại và đóng trại ở Ga-la-át. Con cái Ít-ra-en cũng hội lại và đóng trại ở Mít-pa.

18Dân chúng và các thủ lãnh Ga-la-át nói với nhau : “Ai là người sẽ xung phong giao chiến với con cái Am-mon ? Người ấy sẽ đứng đầu toàn thể dân cư Ga-la-át.”
