Genesis

1Now when these things were done, the word of the Lord came to Abram by a vision, saying: Fear not, Abram, I am thy protector, and thy reward exceeding great.

2And Abram said: Lord God, what wilt thou give me? I shall go without children: and the son of the steward of my house is this Damascus Eliezer.

3And Abram added: But to me thou hast not given seed: and lo my servant, born in my house, shall be my heir.

4And immediately the word of the Lord came to him, saying: He shall not be thy heir: but he that shall come out of thy bowels, him shalt thou have for thy heir.

5And he brought him forth abroad, and said to him: Look up to heaven and number the stars, if thou canst. And he said to him: So shall thy seed be.

6Abram believed God, and it was reputed to him unto justice.

7And he said to him: I am the Lord who brought thee out from Ur of the Chaldees, to give thee this land, and that thou mightest possess it.

8But he said: Lord God, whereby may I know that I shall possess it?

9And the Lord answered, and said: Take me a cow of three years old, and a she goat of three years, and a ram of three years, a turtle also, and a pigeon.

10And he took all these, and divided them in the midst, and laid the two pieces of each one against the other; but the birds he divided not.

11And the fowls came down upon the carcasses, and Abram drove them away.

12And when the sun was setting, a deep sleep fell upon Abram, and a great and darksome horror seized upon him.

13And it was said unto him: Know thou beforehand that thy seed shall be a stranger in a land not their own, and they shall bring them under bondage, and afflict them four hundred years.

14But I will judge the nation which they shall serve, and after this they shall come out with great substance.

15And thou shalt go to thy fathers in peace, and be buried in a good old age.

16But in the fourth generation they shall return hither: for as yet the iniquities of the Amorrhites are not at the full until this present time.

17And when the sun was set, there arose a dark mist, and there appeared a smoking furnace and a lamp of fire passing between those divisions.

18That day God made a covenant with Abram, saying: To thy seed will I give this land, from the river of Egypt even to the great river Euphrates.

19The Cineans and Cenezites, the Cedmonites,

20And the Hethites, and the Pherezites, the Raphaim also,

21And the Amorrhites, and the Chanaanites, and the Gergesites, and the Jebusites.

1Sau các việc đó, có lời ĐỨC CHÚA phán với ông Áp-ram trong một thị kiến rằng : “Hỡi Áp-ram, đừng sợ, Ta là khiên che thuẫn đỡ cho ngươi ; phần thưởng của ngươi sẽ rất lớn.”

2Ông Áp-ram thưa : “Lạy ĐỨC CHÚA là Chúa Thượng, Chúa sẽ ban cho con cái gì ? Con ra đi mà không con cái, và người thừa tự gia đình con là Ê-li-e-de, một người Đa-mát.”

3Ông Áp-ram thưa : “Chúa coi, Chúa không ban cho con một dòng dõi, và một gia nhân của con sẽ thừa kế con.”

4Và đây có lời ĐỨC CHÚA phán với ông rằng : “Kẻ đó sẽ không thừa kế ngươi, nhưng một kẻ do chính ngươi sinh ra mới thừa kế ngươi.”

5Rồi Người đưa ông ra ngoài và phán : “Hãy ngước mắt lên trời, và thử đếm các vì sao, xem có đếm nổi không.” Người lại phán : “Dòng dõi ngươi sẽ như thế đó !”

6Ông tin ĐỨC CHÚA, và vì thế, ĐỨC CHÚA kể ông là người công chính.

7Người phán với ông : “Ta là ĐỨC CHÚA, Đấng đã đưa ngươi ra khỏi thành Ua của người Can-đê, để ban cho ngươi đất này làm sở hữu.”

8Ông thưa : “Lạy ĐỨC CHÚA, làm sao mà biết là con sẽ được đất này làm sở hữu ?”

9Người phán với ông : “Đi kiếm cho Ta một con bò cái ba tuổi, một con dê cái ba tuổi, một con cừu đực ba tuổi, một chim gáy và một bồ câu non.”

10Ông kiếm cho Người tất cả những con vật ấy, xẻ đôi ra, và đặt nửa này đối diện với nửa kia ; còn chim thì ông không xẻ.

11Mãnh cầm sà xuống trên các con vật bị giết, nhưng ông Áp-ram đuổi chúng đi.

12Lúc mặt trời gần lặn, thì một giấc ngủ mê ập xuống trên ông Áp-ram ; một nỗi kinh hoàng, một bóng tối dày đặc bỗng ập xuống trên ông.

13Người phán với ông : “Ngươi phải biết rằng : dòng dõi ngươi sẽ trú ngụ trong một đất không phải của chúng. Chúng sẽ làm tôi người ta và người ta sẽ hành hạ chúng bốn trăm năm.

14Nhưng Ta sẽ xét xử dân tộc chúng phải làm tôi, và sau đó chúng sẽ ra đi với nhiều tài sản.

15Còn ngươi sẽ về với cha ông ngươi bình an, và sẽ được chôn cất sau khi hưởng tuổi già hạnh phúc.

16Đến đời thứ bốn, chúng sẽ trở về đây, vì sự gian ác của người E-mô-ri chưa đủ mức.”

17Khi mặt trời đã lặn và màn đêm bao phủ, thì bỗng có một lò nghi ngút khói và một ngọn đuốc cháy rực đi qua giữa các con vật đã bị xẻ đôi.

18từ sông Ai-cập đến Sông Cả, tức sông Êu-phơ-rát,

19đất của những người Kê-ni, Cơ-nát, Cát-môn,

20Khết, Pơ-rít-di, Ra-pha,

21E-mô-ri, Ca-na-an, Ghia-ga-si và Giơ-vút.”
