1So the king and Aman went in, to drink with the queen.

2And the king said to her again the second day, after he was warm with wine: What is thy petition, Esther, that it may be granted thee? and what wilt thou have done: although thou ask the half of my kingdom, thou shalt have it.

3Then she answered: If I have found Favour in thy sight, O king, and if it please thee, give me my life for which I ask, and my people for which I request.

4For we are given up, I and my people, to be destroyed, to be slain, and to perish. And would God we were sold for bondmen and bondwomen: the evil might be borne with, and I would have mourned in silence: but now we have an enemy, whose cruelty redoundeth upon the king.

5And king Assuerus answered and said: Who is this, and of what power, that he should do these things?

6And Esther said: It is this Aman that is our adversary and most wicked enemy. Aman hearing this was forthwith astonished, not being able to bear the countenance of the king and of the queen.

7But the king being angry rose up, and went from the place of the banquet into the garden set with trees. Aman also rose up to entreat Esther the queen for his life, for he understood that evil was prepared for him by the king.

8And when the king came back out of the garden set with trees, and entered into the place of the banquet, he found Aman was fallen upon the bed on which Esther lay, and he said: He will force the queen also in my presence, in my own house. The word was not yet gone out of the king’s mouth, and immediately they covered his face.

9And Harbona, one of the eunuchs that stood waiting on the king, said: Behold the gibbet which he hath prepared for Mardochai, who spoke for the king, standeth in Aman’s house, being fifty cubits high. And the king said to him: Hang him upon it.

10So Aman was hanged on the gibbet, which he had prepared for Mardochai: and the king’s wrath ceased.

2Ngày thứ hai, trong khi dự tiệc rượu, vua cũng nói với bà Ê-xơ-tê rằng: Hỡi hoàng hậu Ê-xơ-tê, người muốn xin sự gì? tất sẽ ban cho ngươi; muốn cầu gì? dầu cho đến phân nửa nước, tất cũng ban cho.

3Hoàng hậu Ê-xơ-tê thưa lại rằng: Oâi vua! nếu tôi được ơn trước mặt vua, và nếu vua vừa ý, xin vua hãy nhậm lời cầu khẩn tôi mà ban mạng sống cho tôi, và theo sự nài xin tôi mà ban cho tôi dân tộc tôi.

4Vì tôi và dân tộc tôi đã bị bán để hủy diệt, giết chết, và làm cho hư mất đi. Vả, nếu chúng tôi bị bán để làm nô lệ, tất tôi đã nín lặng, mặc dầu kẻ thù nghịch chẳng bồi thường sự thiệt hại cho vua lại được.

5Vua A-suê-ru nói với hoàng hậu Ê-xơ-tê rằng: Kẻ dám toan lòng làm như vậy là ai, và nó ở đâu?

6Bà Ê-xơ-tê thưa: Kẻ cừu thù, ấy là Ha-man độc ác kia. Ha-man bèn lấy làm khiếp vía trước mặt vua và hoàng hậu.

7Vua nổi thạnh nộ, đứng dậy khỏi bữa tiệc, đi ra nơi ngự viện. Còn Ha-man vì thấy rõ vua nhất định giáng họa cho mình, bèn ở lại nài khẩn hoàng hậu Ê-xơ-tê cứu sanh mạng mình.

8Khi vua ở ngoài ngự viện trở vào nhà tiệc, thì Ha-man đã phục xuống trên ghế dài nơi bà Ê-xơ-tê đang ngồi. Vua bèn nói: Trong cung tại trước mặt ta, nó còn dám lăng nhục hoàng hậu sao? Lời vừa ra khỏi miệng vua, người ta liền che mặt Ha-man lại.

9Hạt-bô-na, một hoạn quan chầu chực vua, rằng: Kìa, cây mộc hình, cao năm mươi thước, mà Ha-man đã sắm dựng tại trong nhà mình cho Mạc-đô-chê, là người đã nói trung tín để cứu vua. Vua rằng: Hãy treo nó lên đó!

10Người ta bèn treo Ha-man nơi mộc hình mà hắn đã dựng lên cho Mạc-đô-chê. Rồi cơn giận vua bèn nguôi đi.
