1 Samuel

1And Samuel said to Saul: The Lord sent me to anoint thee king over his People Israel: now therefore hearken thou unto the voice of the Lord:

2Thus saith the Lord of hosts: I have reckoned up all that Amalec hath done to Israel: I how he opposed them in the way when they came up out of Egypt.

3Now therefore go, and smite Amalec, and utterly destroy all that he hath: spare him not, nor covet any thing that is his: but slay both man and woman, child and suckling, ox and sheep, camel and ass.

4So Saul commanded the people, and numbered them as lambs: two hundred thousand footmen, and ten thousand of the men of Juda.

5And when Saul was come to the city of Amalec, he laid ambushes in the torrent.

6And Saul said to the Cinite: Go, depart and get ye down from Amalec: lest I destroy thee with him. For thou hast shewn kindness to all the children of Israel, when they came up out of Egypt. And the Cinite departed from the midst of Amalec.

7And Saul smote Amalec from Hevila, until thou comest to Sur, which is over against Egypt.

8And he took Agag the king of Amalec alive: but all the common people he slew with the edge of the sword.

9And Saul and the people spared Agag and the best of the flocks of sheep and of the herds, and the garments and the rams, and all that was beautiful, and would not destroy them: but every thing that was vile and good for nothing, that they destroyed.

10And the word of the Lord came to Samuel, saying:

11It repenteth me that I have made Saul king: for he hath forsaken me, and hath not executed my commandments. And Samuel was grieved, and he cried unto the Lord all night.

12And when Samuel rose early, to go to Saul in the morning, it was told Samuel, that Saul was come to Carmel, and had erected for himself a triumphant arch, and returning had passed on, and gone down to Galgal. And Samuel came to Saul, and Saul was offering a holocaust to the Lord out of the choicest of the spoils which he had brought from Amalec.

13And when Samuel was come to Saul, Saul said to him: Blessed be thou of the Lord, I have fulfilled the word of the Lord.

14And Samuel said: What meaneth then this bleating of the flocks, which soundeth in my ears, and the lowing of the herds, which I hear?

15And Saul said: They have brought them from Amalec: for the people spared the best of the sheep and of the herds that they might be sacrificed to the Lord thy God, but the rest we have slain.

16And Samuel said to Saul: Suffer me, and I will tell thee what the Lord hath said to me this night. And he said to him: Speak.

17And Samuel said: When thou wast a little one in thy own eyes, wast thou not made the head of the tribes of Israel? And the Lord anointed thee to be king over Israel.

18And the Lord sent thee on the way, and said: Go, and kill the sinners of Amalec, and thou shalt fight against them until thou hast utterly destroyed them.

19Why then didst thou not hearken to the voice of the Lord: but hast turned to the prey, and hast done evil in the eyes of the Lord.

20And Saul said to Samuel: Yea I have hearkened to the voice of the Lord, and have walked in the way by which the Lord sent me, and have brought Agag the king of Amalec, and Amalec I have slain.

21But the people took of the spoils sheep and oxen, as the firstfruits of those things that were slain, to offer sacrifice to the Lord their God in Galgal.

22And Samuel said: Doth the Lord desire holocausts and victims, and not rather that the voice of the Lord should be obeyed? For obedience is better than sacrifices: and to hearken rather than to offer the fat of rams.

23Because it is like the sin of witchcraft, to rebel: and like the crime of idolatry, to refuse to obey. Forasmuch therefore as thou hast rejected the word of the Lord, the Lord hath also rejected thee from being king.

24And Saul said to Samuel: I have sinned because I have transgressed the commandment of the Lord, and thy words, fearing the people, and obeying their voice.

25But now bear, I beseech thee, my sin, and return with me, that I may adore the Lord.

26And Samuel said to Saul: I will not return with thee, because thou hast rejected the word of the Lord, and the Lord hath rejected thee from being king over Israel.

27And Samuel turned about to go away: but he laid hold upon the skirt of his mantle, and it rent.

28And Samuel said to him: The Lord hath rent the kingdom of Israel from thee this day, and hath given it to thy neighbour who is better than thee.

29But the triumpher in Israel will riot spare, and will not be moved to repentance: for he is not a mail that he should repent.

30Then he said: I have sinned: yet honour me now before the ancients of my people, and before Israel, and return with me, that I may adore the Lord thy God.

31So Samuel turned again after Saul: and Saul adored the Lord.

32And Samuel said: Bring hitherto me Agag the king of Amalec. And Agag was presented to him very fat, and trembling. And Agag said: Doth bitter death separate in this manner?

33And Samuel said: As thy sword hath made women childless, so shall thy mother be childless among women. And Samuel hewed him in pieces before the Lord in Galgal.

34And Samuel departed to Ramatha: but Saul went up to his house in Gabaa.

35And Samuel saw Saul no more till the day of his death: nevertheless Samuel mourned for Saul, because the Lord repented that he had made him king over Israel.

1Ông Sa-mu-en nói với vua Sa-un : “Tôi đã được ĐỨC CHÚA sai đến xức dầu tấn phong ngài làm vua cai trị dân Người là Ít-ra-en. Giờ đây ngài hãy nghe những lời ĐỨC CHÚA phán.

2ĐỨC CHÚA các đạo binh phán thế này : Ta sắp hạch tội A-ma-lếch về cách nó đã đối xử với Ít-ra-en khi chặn đường Ít-ra-en đang từ Ai-cập lên.

3Giờ đây, ngươi hãy đi đánh A-ma-lếch. Các ngươi phải tru hiến tất cả những gì thuộc về nó. Ngươi không được tha chết cho nó. Ngươi phải giết từ đàn ông đến đàn bà, từ nhi đồng đến trẻ con đang bú, từ bò đến chiên dê, từ lạc đà đến lừa.”

4Vua Sa-un triệu tập dân và duyệt binh tại Tơ-la-im : hai trăm ngàn bộ binh và mười ngàn người Giu-đa.

5Vua Sa-un đến thành của A-ma-lếch và mai phục trong thung lũng.

6Vua Sa-un nói với người Kê-ni : “Các người hãy đi, hãy ly khai, hãy bỏ hàng ngũ người A-ma-lếch, kẻo ta cũng coi các người như bọn chúng, vì các người đã lấy tình mà đối xử với toàn thể con cái Ít-ra-en khi họ ra khỏi Ai-cập.” Người Kê-ni liền ly khai hàng ngũ A-ma-lếch.

7Vua Sa-un đã đánh A-ma-lếch từ Kha-vi-la cho đến Sua,

8bắt sống A-gác, vua A-ma-lếch, và dùng lưỡi gươm mà tru hiến toàn dân.

9Nhưng vua Sa-un và toàn dân đã tha chết cho A-gác, cho những con tốt nhất trong đoàn chiên dê và bò, các con mập, các chiên con và tất cả những gì tốt ; họ không muốn tru hiến chúng. Còn tất cả các con vật xấu xí và vô giá trị, thì họ đã tru hiến.

10Có lời ĐỨC CHÚA phán với ông Sa-mu-en rằng :

11“Ta hối hận đã đặt Sa-un làm vua, vì nó đã bỏ không theo Ta và không thi hành các lệnh của Ta.” Ông Sa-mu-en buồn bực, và suốt đêm ông kêu lên ĐỨC CHÚA.

12Sáng hôm sau, ông Sa-mu-en dậy sớm để đi gặp vua Sa-un. Người ta báo tin cho ông Sa-mu-en rằng : “Vua Sa-un đã đi Các-men, đã dựng một đài kỷ niệm, rồi bỏ nơi đó, đi xa hơn, và xuống Ghin-gan.”

13Ông Sa-mu-en đến với vua Sa-un. Vua Sa-un nói : “Xin ĐỨC CHÚA chúc phúc cho ông. Tôi đã thi hành lệnh của ĐỨC CHÚA.”

14Ông Sa-mu-en nói : “Thế thì tiếng chiên dê bên tai tôi và tiếng bò rống tôi nghe là gì vậy ?”

15Vua Sa-un trả lời : “Người ta đã đưa chúng từ nơi người A-ma-lếch về, vì dân đã tha chết cho những con tốt nhất trong đàn chiên dê và bò, để làm hy lễ dâng ĐỨC CHÚA, Thiên Chúa của ông ; những con còn lại, chúng tôi đã tru hiến.”

16Ông Sa-mu-en nói với vua Sa-un : “Thôi ! Tôi sẽ báo cho ngài biết điều ĐỨC CHÚA đã phán với tôi đêm qua.” Vua Sa-un bảo : “Xin ông cứ nói.”

17Ông Sa-mu-en nói : “Dù ngài tự coi mình là nhỏ bé, ngài chẳng phải là đầu của các chi tộc Ít-ra-en sao ? ĐỨC CHÚA đã xức dầu phong ngài làm vua cai trị Ít-ra-en.

18ĐỨC CHÚA đã sai ngài lên đường và phán : ‘Hãy đi, ngươi phải tru hiến quân tội lỗi là bọn A-ma-lếch ấy, và phải giao chiến với chúng cho đến khi tận diệt chúng.’

19Tại sao ngài đã không nghe theo tiếng ĐỨC CHÚA ? Tại sao ngài đã xông vào lấy chiến lợi phẩm và làm điều dữ trái mắt ĐỨC CHÚA ?”

20Vua Sa-un nói với ông Sa-mu-en : “Tôi đã nghe theo tiếng ĐỨC CHÚA. Tôi đã đi theo con đường ĐỨC CHÚA sai tôi đi. Tôi đã đưa A-gác, vua A-ma-lếch về, và đã tru hiến A-ma-lếch.

21Trong số chiến lợi phẩm là chiên dê và bò, trong số những vật bị tru hiến, dân đã lấy những con tốt nhất để làm hy lễ dâng ĐỨC CHÚA, Thiên Chúa của ông, tại Ghin-gan.”

22lắng nghe thì tốt hơn là dâng mỡ cừu.

23nên Người đã gạt bỏ ngài, không cho làm vua nữa.”

24Vua Sa-un nói với ông Sa-mu-en : “Tôi đã phạm tội, vì đã vi phạm lệnh ĐỨC CHÚA và các lời của ông. Lý do là vì tôi đã sợ dân và nghe theo tiếng họ.

25Giờ đây, xin ông vui lòng tha tội cho tôi và trở lại cùng với tôi, để tôi phục xuống lạy ĐỨC CHÚA.”

26Ông Sa-mu-en trả lời vua Sa-un : “Tôi sẽ không trở lại cùng với ngài, vì ngài đã gạt bỏ lời ĐỨC CHÚA ; ĐỨC CHÚA đã gạt bỏ ngài, không cho làm vua cai trị Ít-ra-en nữa.”

27Khi ông Sa-mu-en quay mặt để đi thì vua Sa-un níu vạt áo khoác của ông và áo bị giật rách.

28Ông Sa-mu-en nói với vua : “Hôm nay ĐỨC CHÚA đã giật vương quyền Ít-ra-en ra khỏi ngài và đã ban cho một người khác tốt hơn ngài.

29Đấng là Vinh Dự của Ít-ra-en không lừa dối cũng không hối hận, vì Người đâu phải là con người để mà hối hận.”

30Vua nói : “Tôi đã phạm tội, nhưng giờ đây xin ông kính trọng tôi trước mặt các kỳ mục trong dân của tôi và trước mặt Ít-ra-en. Xin ông trở lại cùng với tôi để tôi phục xuống lạy ĐỨC CHÚA, Thiên Chúa của ông.”

31Ông Sa-mu-en trở lại, theo sau vua Sa-un, và vua Sa-un đã phục xuống lạy ĐỨC CHÚA.

32Ông Sa-mu-en nói : “Hãy đem A-gác, vua A-ma-lếch lại cho tôi.” A-gác vui vẻ đến với ông và nói : “Hẳn là ta thoát được cái chết cay đắng.”

33Rồi ông Sa-mu-en xé xác A-gác trước nhan ĐỨC CHÚA, tại Ghin-gan.

34Ông Sa-mu-en đi Ra-ma, còn vua Sa-un lên nhà mình tại Ghíp-a, thành của vua Sa-un.

35Cho đến chết, ông Sa-mu-en không gặp lại vua Sa-un nữa : ông Sa-mu-en khóc thương vua Sa-un, vì ĐỨC CHÚA hối hận đã đặt Sa-un làm vua cai trị Ít-ra-en.
