The Lord of the Sabbath

1At that time Jesus went through the grainfields on the Sabbath. His disciples were hungry and began to pick the heads of grain and eat them.

2When the Pharisees saw this, they said to Him, “Look, Your disciples are doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath.”

3Jesus replied, “Have you not read what David did when he and his companions were hungry?

4He entered the house of God, and he and his companions ate the consecrated bread,which was not lawful for them to eat, but only for the priests.

5Or haven’t you read in the Law that on the Sabbath the priests in the temple break the Sabbath and yet are innocent?

6But I tell you that One greater than the temple is here.

7If only you had known the meaning of ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice,’you would not have condemned the innocent.

8For the Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.”

Jesus Heals on the Sabbath

9Moving on from there, Jesus entered their synagogue,

10and a man with a withered hand was there. In order to accuse Jesus, they asked Him, “Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath?”

11He replied, “If one of you has a sheep and it falls into a pit on the Sabbath, will he not take hold of it and lift it out?

12How much more valuable is a man than a sheep! Therefore it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath.”

13Then Jesus said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” So he stretched it out, and it was restored to full use, just like the other.

14But the Pharisees went out and plotted how they might kill Jesus.

God’s Chosen Servant

15Aware of this, Jesus withdrew from that place. Large crowds followed Him, and He healed them all,

16warning them not to make Him known.

17This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah:

18“Here is My Servant,whom I have chosen,My beloved,in whom My soul delights.I will put My Spirit on Him,and He will proclaim justice to the nations.

19He will not quarrel or cry out;no one will hear His voice in the streets.

20A bruised reed He will not break,and a smoldering wick He will not extinguish,till He leads justice to victory.

21In His name the nations will put their hope.”

A House Divided

22Then a demon-possessed man who was blind and mute was brought to Jesus, and He healed the man so that he could speak and see.

23The crowds were astounded and asked, “Could this be the Son of David?”

24But when the Pharisees heard this, they said, “Only by Beelzebul,the prince of demons, does this man drive out demons.”

25Knowing their thoughts, Jesus said to them, “Every kingdom divided against itself will be laid waste, and every city or household divided against itself will not stand.

26If Satan drives out Satan, he is divided against himself. How then can his kingdom stand?

27And if I drive out demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your sons drive them out? So then, they will be your judges.

28But if I drive out demons by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God has come upon you.

29Or again, how can anyone enter a strong man’s house and steal his possessions, unless he first ties up the strong man? Then he can plunder his house.

30He who is not with Me is against Me, and he who does not gather with Me scatters.

The Unpardonable Sin

31Therefore I tell you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven.

32Whoever speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the one to come.

Good and Bad Fruit

33Make a tree good and its fruit will be good, or make a tree bad and its fruit will be bad, for a tree is known by its fruit.

34You brood of vipers, how can you who are evil say anything good? For out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks.

35The good man brings good things out of his good store of treasure, and the evil man brings evil things out of his evil store of treasure.

36But I tell you that men will give an account on the day of judgment for every careless word they have spoken.

37For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned.”

The Sign of Jonah

38Then some of the scribes and Pharisees said to Him, “Teacher, we want to see a sign from You.”

39Jesus replied, “A wicked and adulterous generation demands a sign, but none will be given it except the sign of the prophet Jonah.

40For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.

41The men of Nineveh will stand at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and now One greater than Jonah is here.

42The Queen of the South will rise at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and now One greater than Solomon is here.

An Unclean Spirit Returns

43When an unclean spirit comes out of a man, it passes through arid places seeking rest and does not find it.

44Then it says, ‘I will return to the house I left.’ On its return, it finds the house vacant, swept clean, and put in order.

45Then it goes and brings with it seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and dwell there. And the final plight of that man is worse than the first. So will it be with this wicked generation.”

Jesus’ Mother and Brothers

46While Jesus was still speaking to the crowds, His mother and brothers stood outside, wanting to speak to Him.

47Someone told Him, “Look, Your mother and brothers are standing outside, wanting to speak to You.”

48But Jesus replied, “Who is My mother, and who are My brothers?”

49Pointing to His disciples, He said, “Here are My mother and My brothers.

50For whoever does the will of My Father in heaven is My brother and sister and mother.”

1Hôm ấy, vào ngày sa-bát, Đức Giê-su đi băng qua một cánh đồng lúa ; các môn đệ thấy đói và bắt đầu bứt lúa ăn.

2Người Pha-ri-sêu thấy vậy, mới nói với Đức Giê-su : “Ông coi, các môn đệ ông làm điều không được phép làm ngày sa-bát !”

3Người đáp : “Các ông chưa đọc trong Sách sao ? Ông Đa-vít đã làm gì, khi ông và thuộc hạ đói bụng ?

4Ông vào nhà Thiên Chúa, và đã cùng thuộc hạ ăn bánh tiến. Thứ bánh này, họ không được phép ăn, chỉ có tư tế mới được ăn mà thôi.

5Hay các ông chưa đọc trong sách Luật rằng ngày sa-bát, các tư tế trong Đền Thờ vi phạm luật sa-bát mà không mắc tội đó sao ?

6Tôi nói cho các ông hay : ở đây còn lớn hơn Đền Thờ nữa.

7Nếu các ông hiểu được ý nghĩa của câu này : *Ta muốn lòng nhân chứ đâu cần lễ tế,* ắt các ông đã chẳng lên án kẻ vô tội.

8Quả thế, Con Người làm chủ ngày sa-bát.”

9Đức Giê-su bỏ đó mà đi vào hội đường của họ.

10Tại đây, có người bị bại một tay. Người ta hỏi Đức Giê-su rằng : “Có được phép chữa bệnh ngày sa-bát không ?” Họ hỏi thế là để tố cáo Người.

11Người đáp : “Ai trong các ông có một con chiên độc nhất bị sa hố ngày sa-bát, lại không nắm lấy nó và kéo lên sao ?

12Mà người thì quý hơn chiên biết mấy ! Vì thế, ngày sa-bát được phép làm điều lành.”

13Rồi Đức Giê-su bảo người bại tay : “Anh giơ tay ra !” Người ấy giơ ra và tay liền trở lại bình thường lành mạnh như tay kia.

14Ra khỏi đó, nhóm Pha-ri-sêu bàn bạc để tìm cách giết Đức Giê-su.

15Biết vậy, Đức Giê-su lánh khỏi nơi đó. Dân chúng theo Người đông đảo và Người chữa lành hết.

16Người còn cấm họ không được tiết lộ Người là ai.

17Như thế là để ứng nghiệm lời ngôn sứ I-sai-a đã nói :

18*Đây là Người Tôi Tớ Ta đã tuyển chọn, đây là người Ta yêu dấu : Ta hài lòng về Người. Ta cho Thần Khí Ta ngự trên Người. Người sẽ loan báo công lý trước muôn dân.*

19*Người sẽ không cãi vã, không kêu to, chẳng ai nghe thấy Người lên tiếng giữa phố phường.*

20*Cây lau bị giập, Người không đành bẻ gãy, tim đèn leo lét, chẳng nỡ tắt đi, cho đến khi Người đưa công lý đến toàn thắng,*

21*và muôn dân đặt niềm hy vọng nơi danh Người.*

22Bấy giờ họ đem đến cho Đức Giê-su một người bị quỷ ám vừa mù lại vừa câm. Người chữa anh ta, khiến anh nói và thấy được.

23Tất cả dân chúng đều sửng sốt và nói : “Ông này chẳng phải là Con vua Đa-vít sao ?”

24Nghe vậy, những người Pha-ri-sêu nói rằng : “Ông này trừ được quỷ chỉ là nhờ dựa thế quỷ vương Bê-en-dê-bun.”

25Biết ý nghĩ của họ, Đức Giê-su nói : “Bất cứ nước nào tự chia rẽ, thì sẽ điêu tàn. Bất cứ thành nào hay nhà nào tự chia rẽ, thì sẽ không tồn tại.

26Nếu Xa-tan trừ Xa-tan, thì Xa-tan tự chia rẽ : nước nó tồn tại sao được ?

27Nếu tôi dựa thế Bê-en-dê-bun mà trừ quỷ, thì đệ tử các ông dựa thế ai mà trừ ? Bởi vậy, chính họ sẽ xét xử các ông.

28Còn nếu tôi dựa vào Thần Khí của Thiên Chúa mà trừ quỷ, thì quả là triều đại Thiên Chúa đã đến giữa các ông.

29“Làm sao người ta có thể vào nhà một kẻ mạnh và cướp của được, nếu không trói kẻ mạnh ấy trước đã, rồi mới cướp sạch nhà nó ?

30“Ai không đi với tôi, là chống lại tôi ; và ai không cùng tôi thu góp, là phân tán.

31Vì thế, tôi nói cho các ông hay : mọi tội, kể cả tội nói phạm thượng, cũng sẽ được tha cho loài người, chứ tội nói phạm đến Thần Khí sẽ chẳng được tha.

32Ai nói phạm đến Con Người thì được tha ; nhưng ai nói phạm đến Thánh Thần sẽ chẳng được tha, cả đời này lẫn đời sau.

33“Cây mà tốt thì quả cũng tốt ; cây mà sâu thì quả cũng sâu, vì xem quả thì biết cây.

34Loài rắn độc kia, xấu như các người, thì làm sao nói điều tốt được ? Vì lòng có đầy, miệng mới nói ra.

35Người tốt thì rút cái tốt từ kho tàng tốt của mình ; kẻ xấu thì rút cái xấu từ kho tàng xấu của mình.

36Tôi nói cho các người hay : đến Ngày phán xét, người ta sẽ phải trả lời về mọi điều vô ích mình đã nói.

37Vì nhờ lời nói của anh mà anh sẽ được trắng án ; và cũng tại lời nói của anh mà anh sẽ bị kết án.”

38Bấy giờ có mấy kinh sư và mấy người Pha-ri-sêu nói với Đức Giê-su rằng : “Thưa Thầy, chúng tôi muốn thấy Thầy làm một dấu lạ.”

39Người đáp : “Thế hệ gian ác và ngoại tình này đòi dấu lạ. Nhưng chúng sẽ không được dấu lạ nào, ngoài dấu lạ ngôn sứ Giô-na.

40Quả thật, *ông Giô-na đã ở trong bụng kình ngư ba ngày ba đêm* thế nào, thì Con Người cũng sẽ ở trong lòng đất ba ngày ba đêm như vậy.

41Trong cuộc phán xét, dân thành Ni-ni-vê sẽ trỗi dậy cùng với thế hệ này và sẽ kết án họ, vì xưa dân ấy đã sám hối khi nghe ông Giô-na rao giảng ; mà đây thì còn hơn ông Giô-na nữa.

42Trong cuộc phán xét, nữ hoàng Phương Nam sẽ đứng lên cùng với thế hệ này, và bà sẽ kết án họ, vì xưa bà đã từ tận cùng trái đất đến nghe lời khôn ngoan của vua Sa-lô-môn ; mà đây thì còn hơn vua Sa-lô-môn nữa.

43“Khi thần ô uế xuất khỏi một người, thì nó đi rảo qua những nơi khô cháy, tìm chốn nghỉ ngơi mà tìm không ra.

44Bấy giờ nó nói : ‘Ta sẽ trở về nhà ta, nơi ta đã bỏ ra đi.’ Khi đến nơi, nó thấy nhà để trống, lại được quét tước, trang hoàng hẳn hoi.

45Nó liền đi kéo thêm bảy thần khác dữ hơn nó, và chúng vào ở đó. Rốt cuộc, tình trạng của người ấy lại còn tệ hơn trước. Thế hệ gian ác này rồi cũng sẽ bị như vậy.”

46Người còn đang nói với đám đông, thì có mẹ và anh em của Người đứng bên ngoài, tìm cách nói chuyện với Người.

47Có kẻ thưa Người rằng : “Thưa Thầy, có mẹ và anh em Thầy đang đứng ngoài kia, tìm cách nói chuyện với Thầy.”

48Người bảo kẻ ấy rằng : “Ai là mẹ tôi ? Ai là anh em tôi ?”

49Rồi Người giơ tay chỉ các môn đệ và nói : “Đây là mẹ tôi, đây là anh em tôi.

50Vì phàm ai thi hành ý muốn của Cha tôi, Đấng ngự trên trời, người ấy là anh chị em tôi, là mẹ tôi.”
