Laws for Sin Offerings

1Then the LORD said to Moses,

2“Tell the Israelites to do as follows with one who sins unintentionally against any of the LORD’s commandments and does what is forbidden by them:

3If the anointed priest sins, bringing guilt on the people, he must bring to the LORD a young bull without blemish as a sin offeringfor the sin he has committed.

4He must bring the bull to the entrance to the Tent of Meeting before the LORD, lay his hand on the bull’s head, and slaughter it before the LORD.

5Then the anointed priest shall take some of the bull’s blood and bring it into the Tent of Meeting.

6The priest is to dip his finger in the blood and sprinkle some of it seven times before the LORD, in front of the veil of the sanctuary.

7The priest must then put some of the blood on the horns of the altar of fragrant incense that is before the LORD in the Tent of Meeting. And he is to pour out the rest of the bull’s blood at the base of the altar of burnt offering at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting.

8Then he shall remove all the fat from the bull of the sin offering—the fat that covers the entrails, all the fat that is on them,

9both kidneys with the fat on them near the loins, and the lobe of the liver, which he is to remove with the kidneys—

10just as the fat is removed from the ox of the peace offering. Then the priest shall burn them on the altar of burnt offering.

11But the hide of the bull and all its flesh, with its head and legs and its entrails and dung—

12all the rest of the bull—he must take outside the camp to a ceremonially clean place where the ashes are poured out, and there he must burn it on a wood fire on the ash heap.

13Now if the whole congregation of Israel strays unintentionally and the matter escapes the notice of the assembly so that they violate any of the LORD’s commandments and incur guilt by doing what is forbidden,

14when they become aware of the sin they have committed, then the assembly must bring a young bull as a sin offering and present it before the Tent of Meeting.

15The elders of the congregation are to lay their hands on the bull’s head before the LORD, and it shall be slaughtered before the LORD.

16Then the anointed priest is to bring some of the bull’s blood into the Tent of Meeting,

17and he is to dip his finger in the blood and sprinkle it seven times before the LORD in front of the veil.

18He is also to put some of the blood on the horns of the altar that is before the LORD in the Tent of Meeting, and he must pour out the rest of the blood at the base of the altar of burnt offering at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting.

19And he is to remove all the fat from it and burn it on the altar.

20He shall offer this bull just as he did the bull for the sin offering; in this way the priest will make atonement on their behalf, and they will be forgiven.

21Then he is to take the bull outside the camp and burn it, just as he burned the first bull. It is the sin offering for the assembly.

22When a leader sins unintentionally and does what is prohibited by any of the commandments of the LORD his God, he incurs guilt.

23When he becomes aware of the sin he has committed, he must bring an unblemished male goat as his offering.

24He is to lay his hand on the head of the goat and slaughter it at the place where the burnt offering is slaughtered before the LORD. It is a sin offering.

25Then the priest is to take some of the blood of the sin offering with his finger, put it on the horns of the altar of burnt offering, and pour out the rest of the blood at the base of the altar.

26He must burn all its fat on the altar, like the fat of the peace offerings; thus the priest will make atonement for that man’s sin, and he will be forgiven.

27And if one of the common people sins unintentionally and does what is prohibited by any of the LORD’s commandments, he incurs guilt.

28When he becomes aware of the sin he has committed, he must bring an unblemished female goat as his offering for that sin.

29He is to lay his hand on the head of the sin offering and slaughter it at the place of the burnt offering.

30Then the priest is to take some of its blood with his finger, put it on the horns of the altar of burnt offering, and pour out the rest of the blood at the base of the altar.

31Then he is to remove all the fat, just as it is removed from the peace offering, and the priest is to burn it on the altar as a pleasing aroma to the LORD. In this way the priest will make atonement for him, and he will be forgiven.

32If, however, he brings a lamb as a sin offering, he must bring an unblemished female.

33And he is to lay his hand on the head of the sin offering and slaughter it as a sin offering at the place where the burnt offering is slaughtered.

34Then the priest is to take some of the blood of the sin offering with his finger, put it on the horns of the altar of burnt offering, and pour out the rest of its blood at the base of the altar.

35And he shall remove all the fat, just as the fat of the lamb is removed from the peace offerings, and he shall burn it on the altar along with the food offerings to the LORD. In this way the priest will make atonement for him for the sin he has committed, and he will be forgiven.

1And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying:

2Say to the children of Israel: The soul that sinneth through ignorance, and doth any thing concerning any of the commandments of the Lord, which he commanded not to be done:

3If the priest that is anointed shall sin, making the people to offend, he shall offer to the Lord for his sin a calf without blemish.

4And he shall bring it to the door of the testimony before the Lord, and shall put his hand upon the head thereof, and shall sacrifice it to the Lord.

5He shall take also of the blood of the calf, and carry it into the tabernacle of the testimony.

6And having dipped his finger in the blood, he shall sprinkle with it seven times before the Lord, before the veil of the sanctuary.

7And he shall put some of the same blood upon the horns of the altar of the sweet incense most acceptable to the Lord, which is in the tabernacle of the testimony. And he shall pour all the rest of the blood at the foot of the altar of holocaust in the entry of the tabernacle.

8And he shall take off the fat of the calf for the sin offering, as well that which covereth the entrails, as all the inwards:

9The two little kidneys, and the caul that is upon them, which is by the hanks, and the fat of the liver with the little kidneys,

10As it is taken off from the calf of the sacrifice of peace offerings, and he shall burn them upon the altar of holocaust.

11But the skin and all the flesh with the head and the feet and the bowels and the dung,

12And the rest of the body he shall carry forth without the camp into a clean place where the ashes are wont to be poured out, and he shall burn them upon a pile of wood, they shall be burnt in the place where the ashes are poured out.

13And if all the multitude of Israel shall be ignorant, and through ignorance shall do that which is against the commandment of the Lord,

14And afterwards shall understand their sin, they shall offer for their sin a calf, and shall bring it to the door of the tabernacle.

15And the ancients of the people shall put their hands upon the head thereof before the Lord. And the calf being immolated in the sight of the Lord,

16The priest that is anointed shall carry of the blood into the tabernacle of the testimony.

17And shall dip his finger in it and sprinkle it seven times before the veil.

18And he shall put of the same blood on the horns of the altar that is before the Lord, in the tabernacle of the testimony: and the rest of the blood he shall pour at the foot of the altar of holocaust, which is at the door of the tabernacle of the testimony.

19And all the fat thereof he shall take off, and shall burn it upon the altar:

20Doing so with this calf, as he did also with that before: and the priest praying for them, the Lord will be merciful unto them.

21But the calf itself he shall carry forth without the camp, and shall burn it as he did the former calf: because it is for the sin of the multitude.

22If a prince shall sin, and through ignorance do any one of the things that the law of the Lord forbiddeth,

23And afterwards shall come to know his sin, he shall offer a buck goat without blemish, a sacrifice to the Lord.

24And he shall put his hand upon the head thereof: and when he hath immolated it in the place where the holocaust is wont to be slain before the Lord, because it is for sin,

25The priest shall dip his finger in the blood of the victim for sin, touching therewith the horns of the altar of holocaust, and pouring out the rest at the foot thereof.

26But the fat he shall burn upon it, as is wont to be done with the victims of peace offerings: and the priest shall pray for him, and for his sin, and it shall be forgiven him.

27And if any one of the people of the land shall sin through ignorance, doing any of those things that by the law of the Lord are forbidden, and offending,

28And shall come to know his sin, he shall offer a she goat without blemish.

29And he shall put his hand upon the head of the victim that is for sin, and shall immolate it in the place of the holocaust.

30And the priest shall take of the blood with his finger, and shall touch the horns of the altar of holocaust, and shall pour out the rest at the foot thereof.

31But taking off all the fat, as is wont to be taken away of the victims of peace offerings, he shall burn it upon the altar, for a sweet savour to the Lord: and he shall pray for him, and it shall be forgiven him.

32But if he offer of the flock a victim for his sin, to wit, an ewe without blemish:

33He shall put his hand upon the head thereof, and shall immolate it in the place where the victims of holocausts are wont to be slain.

34And the priest shall take of the blood thereof with his finger, and shall touch the horns of the altar of holocaust, and the rest he shall pour out at the foot thereof.

35All the fat also he shall take off, as the fat of the ram that is offered for peace offerings is wont to be taken away: and shall burn it upon the altar, for a burnt sacrifice of the Lord: and he shall pray for him and for his sin, and it shall be forgiven him.
