Joshua

1But the children of Israel committed a trespass in the devoted thing; for Achan, the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, took of the devoted thing: and the anger of Jehovah was kindled against the children of Israel.

2And Joshua sent men from Jericho to Ai, which is beside Beth-aven, on the east side of Beth-el, and spake unto them, saying, Go up and spy out the land. And the men went up and spied out Ai.

3And they returned to Joshua, and said unto him, Let not all the people go up; but let about two or three thousand men go up and smite Ai; make not all the people to toil thither; for they are but few.

4So there went up thither of the people about three thousand men: and they fled before the men of Ai.

5And the men of Ai smote of them about thirty and six men; and they chased them from before the gate even unto Shebarim, and smote them at the descent: and the hearts of the people melted, and became as water.

6And Joshua rent his clothes, and fell to the earth upon his face before the ark of Jehovah until the evening, he and the elders of Israel; and they put dust upon their heads.

7And Joshua said, Alas, O Lord Jehovah, wherefore hast thou at all brought this people over the Jordan, to deliver us into the hand of the Amorites, to cause us to perish? would that we had been content and dwelt beyond the Jordan!

8Oh, Lord, what shall I say, after that Israel hath turned their backs before their enemies!

9For the Canaanites and all the inhabitants of the land will hear of it, and will compass us round, and cut off our name from the earth: and what wilt thou do for thy great name?

10And Jehovah said unto Joshua, Get thee up; wherefore art thou thus fallen upon thy face?

11Israel hath sinned; yea, they have even transgressed my covenant which I commanded them: yea, they have even taken of the devoted thing, and have also stolen, and dissembled also; and they have even put it among their own stuff.

12Therefore the children of Israel cannot stand before their enemies; they turn their backs before their enemies, because they are become accursed: I will not be with you any more, except ye destroy the devoted thing from among you.

13Up, sanctify the people, and say, Sanctify yourselves against to-morrow: for thus saith Jehovah, the God of Israel, There is a devoted thing in the midst of thee, O Israel; thou canst not stand before thine enemies, until ye take away the devoted thing from among you.

14In the morning therefore ye shall be brought near by your tribes: and it shall be, that the tribe which Jehovah taketh shall come near by families; and the family which Jehovah shall take shall come near by households; and the household which Jehovah shall take shall come near man by man.

15And it shall be, that he that is taken with the devoted thing shall be burnt with fire, he and all that he hath; because he hath transgressed the covenant of Jehovah, and because he hath wrought folly in Israel.

16So Joshua rose up early in the morning, and brought Israel near by their tribes; and the tribe of Judah was taken:

17and he brought near the family of Judah; and he took the family of the Zerahites: and he brought near the family of the Zerahites man by man; and Zabdi was taken:

18and he brought near his household man by man; and Achan, the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, was taken.

19And Joshua said unto Achan, My son, give, I pray thee, glory to Jehovah, the God of Israel, and make confession unto him; and tell me now what thou hast done; hide it not from me.

20And Achan answered Joshua, and said, Of a truth I have sinned against Jehovah, the God of Israel, and thus and thus have I done:

21when I saw among the spoil a goodly Babylonish mantle, and two hundred shekels of silver, and a wedge of gold of fifty shekels weight, then I coveted them, and took them; and, behold, they are hid in the earth in the midst of my tent, and the silver under it.

22So Joshua sent messengers, and they ran unto the tent; and, behold, it was hid in his tent, and the silver under it.

23And they took them from the midst of the tent, and brought them unto Joshua, and unto all the children of Israel; and they laid them down before Jehovah.

24And Joshua, and all Israel with him, took Achan the son of Zerah, and the silver, and the mantle, and the wedge of gold, and his sons, and his daughters, and his oxen, and his asses, and his sheep, and his tent, and all that he had: and they brought them up unto the valley of Achor.

25And Joshua said, Why hast thou troubled us? Jehovah shall trouble thee this day. And all Israel stoned him with stones; and they burned them with fire, and stoned them with stones.

26And they raised over him a great heap of stones, unto this day; and Jehovah turned from the fierceness of his anger. Wherefore the name of that place was called, The valley of Achor, unto this day.

1Nhưng con cái Ít-ra-en đã can tội không thi hành án biệt hiến : ông A-khan, con ông Các-mi, cháu ông Dáp-đi, chắt ông De-rác, thuộc chi tộc Giu-đa, đã lấy đồ vật trong số những thứ bị án biệt hiến. Nên ĐỨC CHÚA nổi cơn thịnh nộ với con cái Ít-ra-en.

2Từ Giê-ri-khô, ông Giô-suê sai người đến thành Ai ở gần Bết A-ven, về phía đông Bết Ên. Ông nói với họ : “Hãy lên do thám xứ ấy !” Họ lên do thám thành Ai.

3Họ trở về với ông Giô-suê và nói : “Đừng đưa cả dân lên ! Chỉ cần khoảng hai hoặc ba ngàn người lên mà đánh thành Ai. Đừng làm khổ toàn dân trong vụ này, vì bọn kia không đông mấy !”

4Vậy có chừng ba ngàn người trong dân đã lên đó, nhưng họ đã chạy trốn trước mặt người thành Ai.

5Người thành Ai đã giết khoảng ba mươi sáu người của họ. Người thành Ai đuổi theo họ từ đàng trước cổng thành đến Sơ-va-rim, và đánh bại họ ở chỗ dốc. Tâm thần của dân sợ hãi như muốn chảy tan ra như nước.

6Ông Giô-suê xé áo mình ra, và cùng với các kỳ mục Ít-ra-en sấp mặt xuống đất trước Hòm Bia ĐỨC CHÚA, cho đến chiều. Họ rắc bụi lên đầu.

7Ông Giô-suê nói : “Ôi ! Lạy Chúa là ĐỨC CHÚA, sao Ngài lại đem dân này qua sông Gio-đan mà nộp chúng con vào tay người E-mô-ri để huỷ diệt chúng con ? Giá chúng con được định cư bên kia sông Gio-đan, thì có hơn không ?

8Xin đoái thương, lạy Chúa, con biết nói gì đây, sau khi Ít-ra-en phải quay lưng chạy trốn các địch thù ?

9Người Ca-na-an và mọi dân cư trong xứ sẽ nghe biết tin này. Họ sẽ quay lại chống chúng con và xoá tên chúng con khỏi mặt đất. Khi đó, Ngài sẽ làm gì để chứng tỏ danh Ngài vĩ đại ?”

10ĐỨC CHÚA phán với ông Giô-suê : “Đứng dậy đi ! Sao ngươi cứ sấp mặt xuống đất như vậy ?

11Ít-ra-en đã phạm tội, hơn nữa, chúng đã vi phạm giao ước mà Ta đã truyền cho chúng phải giữ ; chúng đã dám lấy cả đồ vật bị án biệt hiến, chúng đã dám lấy trộm, giấu đi và bỏ vào đồ đoàn của chúng !

12Vì thế, con cái Ít-ra-en sẽ không thể đương đầu với địch thù của chúng. Chúng sẽ quay lưng chạy trốn các địch thù, vì chúng đã trở nên những kẻ mang án tru hiến. Ta sẽ không ở với các ngươi nữa, nếu các ngươi không loại khỏi các ngươi những đồ vật bị án biệt hiến.

13Đứng dậy đi ! Hãy làm cho dân được nên thánh. Ngươi sẽ nói : Anh em hãy lo cho mình được nên thánh để chuẩn bị cho ngày mai, vì ĐỨC CHÚA, Thiên Chúa của Ít-ra-en, phán thế này : Hỡi Ít-ra-en, giữa các ngươi có một đồ vật bị án biệt hiến. (Các) ngươi sẽ không thể đương đầu với địch thù của (các) ngươi, bao lâu các ngươi không cất khỏi các ngươi đồ vật ấy.

14Sáng mai, các ngươi sẽ tiến đến theo từng chi tộc. Chi tộc nào ĐỨC CHÚA đã dùng thăm mà chỉ định, sẽ tiến đến theo từng thị tộc. Thị tộc nào ĐỨC CHÚA đã dùng thăm mà chỉ định, sẽ tiến đến theo từng gia đình. Gia đình nào ĐỨC CHÚA đã dùng thăm mà chỉ định, sẽ tiến đến từng người một.

15Kẻ nào bị chỉ định bởi việc bắt thăm vì có liên quan đến án biệt hiến, thì sẽ bị thiêu cùng với tất cả đồ vật của nó ; vì nó đã vi phạm giao ước của ĐỨC CHÚA, và vì nó đã làm một điều ô nhục trong Ít-ra-en.”

16Sáng hôm sau, ông Giô-suê dậy sớm và cho dân Ít-ra-en tiến đến theo chi tộc : chi tộc Giu-đa bắt trúng thăm.

17Ông cho các thị tộc Giu-đa tiến đến, và thị tộc De-rác bắt trúng thăm ; ông cho thị tộc De-rác tiến đến theo từng gia đình ; và gia đình Dáp-đi bắt trúng thăm.

18Ông cho gia đình Dáp-đi tiến đến từng người một, và A-khan, con ông Các-mi, cháu ông Dáp-đi, chắt ông De-rác, thuộc chi tộc Giu-đa, bắt trúng thăm.

19Ông Giô-suê bảo A-khan : “Này ngươi, hãy tôn vinh ĐỨC CHÚA, Thiên Chúa của Ít-ra-en, và hãy suy tôn Người ! Hãy thú thật với ta những gì ngươi đã làm, đừng giấu giếm gì cả.”

20A-khan trả lời ông Giô-suê : “Quả thật, con đã đắc tội với ĐỨC CHÚA, Thiên Chúa của Ít-ra-en, đây là điều con đã làm :

21Trong số chiến lợi phẩm, con trông thấy một chiếc áo khoác đẹp miền Sin-a, hai ký bạc và một thỏi vàng cân nặng hơn nửa ký, vì lòng tham, con đã lấy ; các vật ấy được chôn dưới đất, ở giữa lều của con, và bạc thì ở bên dưới.”

22Ông Giô-suê sai người chạy tới lều A-khan ; quả thật chiếc áo khoác được chôn trong lều, còn bạc thì ở dưới.

23Họ lấy tất cả ra khỏi lều, mang về cho ông Giô-suê và toàn thể con cái Ít-ra-en, rồi đổ ra trước nhan ĐỨC CHÚA.

24Khi ấy, ông Giô-suê đem A-khan, con ông De-rác đi, cùng với bạc, áo khoác, nén vàng, cũng như con trai, con gái, bò lừa, chiên dê, lều trại và tất cả những gì của nó. Toàn thể Ít-ra-en cùng đi với nó. Người ta đem chúng lên cánh đồng A-kho.

25Ông Giô-suê bảo : “Sao ngươi lại gây hoạ cho chúng ta ? Xin ĐỨC CHÚA giáng hoạ cho ngươi hôm nay !” Toàn thể Ít-ra-en ném đá A-khan. Họ ném đá và thiêu những gì còn lại.

26Rồi người ta chất một đống đá lớn trên A-khan. Đống đá ấy vẫn còn cho đến ngày nay. Bấy giờ, ĐỨC CHÚA nguôi cơn thịnh nộ. Vì thế, người ta gọi nơi này là “cánh đồng A-kho” cho đến ngày nay.
