Numbers

1The LORD spoke to Moses, saying,

2“Send men, that they may spy out the land of Canaan, which I give to the children of Israel. Of every tribe of their fathers, you shall send a man, every one a prince amongst them.”

3Moses sent them from the wilderness of Paran according to the commandment of the LORD. All of them were men who were heads of the children of Israel.

4These were their names: Of the tribe of Reuben, Shammua the son of Zaccur.

5Of the tribe of Simeon, Shaphat the son of Hori.

6Of the tribe of Judah, Caleb the son of Jephunneh.

7Of the tribe of Issachar, Igal the son of Joseph.

8Of the tribe of Ephraim, Hoshea the son of Nun.

9Of the tribe of Benjamin, Palti the son of Raphu.

10Of the tribe of Zebulun, Gaddiel the son of Sodi.

11Of the tribe of Joseph, of the tribe of Manasseh, Gaddi the son of Susi.

12Of the tribe of Dan, Ammiel the son of Gemalli.

13Of the tribe of Asher, Sethur the son of Michael.

14Of the tribe of Naphtali, Nahbi the son of Vophsi.

15Of the tribe of Gad, Geuel the son of Machi.

16These are the names of the men who Moses sent to spy out the land. Moses called Hoshea the son of Nun Joshua.

17Moses sent them to spy out the land of Canaan, and said to them, “Go up this way by the South, and go up into the hill country.

18See the land, what it is; and the people who dwell therein, whether they are strong or weak, whether they are few or many;

19and what the land is that they dwell in, whether it is good or bad; and what cities they are that they dwell in, whether in camps, or in strongholds;

20and what the land is, whether it is fertile or poor, whether there is wood therein, or not. Be courageous, and bring some of the fruit of the land.” Now the time was the time of the first-ripe grapes.

21So they went up, and spied out the land from the wilderness of Zin to Rehob, to the entrance of Hamath.

22They went up by the South, and came to Hebron; and Ahiman, Sheshai, and Talmai, the children of Anak, were there. (Now Hebron was built seven years before Zoan in Egypt.)

23They came to the valley of Eshcol, and cut down from there a branch with one cluster of grapes, and they bore it on a staff between two. They also brought some of the pomegranates and figs.

24That place was called the valley of Eshcol, because of the cluster which the children of Israel cut down from there.

25They returned from spying out the land at the end of forty days.

26They went and came to Moses, to Aaron, and to all the congregation of the children of Israel, to the wilderness of Paran, to Kadesh; and brought back word to them and to all the congregation. They showed them the fruit of the land.

27They told him, and said, “We came to the land where you sent us. Surely it flows with milk and honey, and this is its fruit.

28However, the people who dwell in the land are strong, and the cities are fortified and very large. Moreover, we saw the children of Anak there.

29Amalek dwells in the land of the South. The Hittite, the Jebusite, and the Amorite dwell in the hill country. The Canaanite dwells by the sea, and along the side of the Jordan.”

30Caleb stilled the people before Moses, and said, “Let’s go up at once, and possess it; for we are well able to overcome it!”

31But the men who went up with him said, “We aren’t able to go up against the people; for they are stronger than we.”

32They brought up an evil report of the land which they had spied out to the children of Israel, saying, “The land, through which we have gone to spy it out, is a land that eats up its inhabitants; and all the people who we saw in it are men of great stature.

33There we saw the Nephilim,the sons of Anak, who come from the Nephilim.We were in our own sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight.”

1ĐỨC CHÚA phán với ông Mô-sê :

2“Ngươi hãy sai người đi do thám đất Ca-na-an, đất mà Ta sẽ ban cho con cái Ít-ra-en. Các ngươi sẽ sai đi mỗi chi tộc một người và tất cả phải là kỳ mục trong dân.”

3Vậy từ sa mạc Pa-ran, ông Mô-sê đã sai họ đi, theo lệnh ĐỨC CHÚA truyền. Tất cả họ đều là những người đứng đầu trong con cái Ít-ra-en.

4Thuộc chi tộc Rưu-vên, có ông Sam-mu-a, con ông Dắc-cua.

5Thuộc chi tộc Si-mê-ôn, có ông Sa-phát, con ông Khô-ri.

6Thuộc chi tộc Giu-đa, có ông Ca-lếp, con ông Giơ-phun-ne.

7Thuộc chi tộc Ít-xa-kha, có ông Gích-an, con ông Giô-xếp.

8Thuộc chi tộc Ép-ra-im, có ông Hô-sê-a, con ông Nun.

9Thuộc chi tộc Ben-gia-min, có ông Pan-ti, con ông Ra-phu.

10Thuộc chi tộc Dơ-vu-lun, có ông Gát-đi-en, con ông Xô-đi.

11Thuộc chi tộc Giu-se, ngành Mơ-na-se, có ông Gát-đi, con ông Xu-xi.

12Thuộc chi tộc Đan, có ông Am-mi-ên, con ông Gơ-ma-li.

13Thuộc chi tộc A-se, có ông Xơ-tua, con ông Mi-kha-ên.

14Thuộc chi tộc Náp-ta-li, có ông Nác-bi, con ông Vóp-xi.

15Thuộc chi tộc Gát, có ông Gơ-u-ên, con ông Ma-khi.

16Đó là tên những người ông Mô-sê sai đi do thám đất. Rồi ông Mô-sê đặt tên cho Hô-sê-a, con ông Nun, là Giô-suê.

17Ông Mô-sê sai họ đi do thám đất Ca-na-an. Ông bảo họ : “Anh em hãy qua miền Ne-ghép mà lên, lên miền núi.

18Anh em sẽ xem đất, xem nó thế nào, dân ở đó mạnh hay yếu, ít hay nhiều,

19đất họ ở tốt hay xấu, thành thị của họ là lều trại hay đồn luỹ,

20Bấy giờ là đầu mùa nho.

21Họ đi lên và do thám đất, từ sa mạc Xin đến Rơ-khốp, trên đường vào Cửa Ải Kha-mát.

22Họ qua miền Ne-ghép đi lên và tới tận Khép-rôn, ở đó có A-khi-man, Sê-sai và Tan-mai là con cháu của A-nác. Khép-rôn đã được xây bảy năm trước Xô-an bên Ai-cập.

23Họ vào đến thung lũng Ét-côn, ở đó họ chặt một nhành nho và một chùm nho, rồi hai người dùng sào mà khiêng, họ cũng lấy cả lựu và vả.

24Người ta gọi nơi ấy là thung lũng Ét-côn, vì chùm nho mà con cái Ít-ra-en đã hái ở đó.

25Sau bốn mươi ngày do thám đất, họ trở về.

26Họ đến gặp ông Mô-sê, ông A-ha-ron và toàn thể cộng đồng con cái Ít-ra-en, tại Ca-đê trong sa mạc Pa-ran. Họ báo cáo với hai ông và toàn thể cộng đồng con cái Ít-ra-en, và cho những người đó xem hoa trái miền ấy.

27Họ thuật lại với ông Mô-sê rằng : “Chúng tôi đã vào miền đất ông sai chúng tôi đến. Đúng là miền đất tuôn chảy sữa và mật, và đây là hoa trái miền ấy.

28Thế nhưng dân cư miền ấy thì mạnh, thành thị lại kiên cố và rộng lớn lắm ; ở đó chúng tôi còn thấy cả con cháu A-nác.

29Có người A-ma-lếch ở miền Ne-ghép, người Khết, người Giơ-vút và người E-mô-ri ở miền núi, còn người Ca-na-an thì ở bờ biển và dọc sông Gio-đan.”

30Bấy giờ ông Ca-lếp truyền cho dân đang phản đối ông Mô-sê phải im lặng, ông nói : “Ta cứ lên chiếm miền ấy, vì chắc chắn ta có thể thắng được.”

31Những người đã cùng lên với ông đáp lại : “Ta không thể lên đánh dân ấy, vì họ mạnh hơn ta.”

32Trước mặt con cái Ít-ra-en, họ bắt đầu chê bai miền đất họ đã do thám, họ nói : “Miền đất chúng ta đã đi qua để do thám là đất nuốt những người ở đó, và tất cả những người chúng tôi thấy ở đó đều là những người cao lớn.

33Ở đó chúng tôi trông thấy những người khổng lồ, con cháu của A-nác thuộc giống người khổng lồ. Chúng tôi thấy mình chỉ như châu chấu, và họ cũng coi chúng tôi như vậy.”
