1Now the Philistines gathered together their armies to battle; and they were gathered together at Socoh, which belongs to Judah, and encamped between Socoh and Azekah in Ephesdammim.

2Saul and the men of Israel were gathered together, and encamped in the valley of Elah, and set the battle in array against the Philistines.

3The Philistines stood on the mountain on the one side, and Israel stood on the mountain on the other side: and there was a valley between them.

4A champion out of the camp of the Philistines named Goliath of Gath, whose height was six cubits and a spanwent out.

5He had a helmet of bronze on his head, and he wore a coat of mail; and the weight of the coat was five thousand shekelsof bronze.

6He had bronze shin armour on his legs and a bronze javelin between his shoulders.

7The staff of his spear was like a weaver’s beam; and his spear’s head weighed six hundred shekels of iron.His shield bearer went before him.

8He stood and cried to the armies of Israel, and said to them, “Why have you come out to set your battle in array? Am I not a Philistine, and you servants to Saul? Choose a man for yourselves, and let him come down to me.

9If he is able to fight with me and kill me, then will we be your servants; but if I prevail against him and kill him, then you will be our servants and serve us.”

10The Philistine said, “I defy the armies of Israel today! Give me a man, that we may fight together!”

11When Saul and all Israel heard those words of the Philistine, they were dismayed and greatly afraid.

12Now David was the son of that Ephrathite of Bethlehem Judah, whose name was Jesse; and he had eight sons. The man was an elderly old man in the days of Saul.

13The three oldest sons of Jesse had gone after Saul to the battle; and the names of his three sons who went to the battle were Eliab the firstborn, and next to him Abinadab, and the third Shammah.

14David was the youngest; and the three oldest followed Saul.

15Now David went back and forth from Saul to feed his father’s sheep at Bethlehem.

16The Philistine came near morning and evening, and presented himself forty days.

17Jesse said to David his son, “Now take for your brothers an ephahof this parched grain and these ten loaves, and carry them quickly to the camp to your brothers;

18and bring these ten cheeses to the captain of their thousand; and see how your brothers are doing, and bring back news.”

19Now Saul, and they, and all the men of Israel were in the valley of Elah, fighting with the Philistines.

20David rose up early in the morning and left the sheep with a keeper, and took the provisions and went, as Jesse had commanded him. He came to the place of the wagons as the army which was going out to the fight shouted for the battle.

21Israel and the Philistines put the battle in array, army against army.

22David left his baggage in the hand of the keeper of the baggage and ran to the army, and came and greeted his brothers.

23As he talked with them, behold, the champion, the Philistine of Gath, Goliath by name, came up out of the ranks of the Philistines, and said the same words; and David heard them.

24All the men of Israel, when they saw the man, fled from him and were terrified.

25The men of Israel said, “Have you seen this man who has come up? He has surely come up to defy Israel. The king will give great riches to the man who kills him, and will give him his daughter, and will make his father’s house tax-free in Israel.”

26David spoke to the men who stood by him, saying, “What shall be done to the man who kills this Philistine and takes away the reproach from Israel? For who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God?”

27The people answered him in this way, saying, “So shall it be done to the man who kills him.”

28Eliab his oldest brother heard when he spoke to the men; and Eliab’s anger burnt against David, and he said, “Why have you come down? With whom have you left those few sheep in the wilderness? I know your pride and the evil of your heart; for you have come down that you might see the battle.”

29David said, “What have I now done? Is there not a cause?”

30He turned away from him towards another, and spoke like that again; and the people answered him again the same way.

31When the words were heard which David spoke, they rehearsed them before Saul; and he sent for him.

32David said to Saul, “Let no man’s heart fail because of him. Your servant will go and fight with this Philistine.”

33Saul said to David, “You are not able to go against this Philistine to fight with him; for you are but a youth, and he a man of war from his youth.”

34David said to Saul, “Your servant was keeping his father’s sheep; and when a lion or a bear came and took a lamb out of the flock,

35I went out after him, struck him, and rescued it out of his mouth. When he arose against me, I caught him by his beard, struck him, and killed him.

36Your servant struck both the lion and the bear. This uncircumcised Philistine shall be as one of them, since he has defied the armies of the living God.”

37David said, “The LORD, who delivered me out of the paw of the lion and out of the paw of the bear, will deliver me out of the hand of this Philistine.” Saul said to David, “Go! The LORD will be with you.”

38Saul dressed David with his clothing. He put a helmet of bronze on his head, and he clad him with a coat of mail.

39David strapped his sword on his clothing and he tried to move, for he had not tested it. David said to Saul, “I can’t go with these, for I have not tested them.” Then David took them off.

40He took his staff in his hand, and chose for himself five smooth stones out of the brook, and put them in the pouch of his shepherd’s bag which he had. His sling was in his hand; and he came near to the Philistine.

41The Philistine walked and came near to David; and the man who bore the shield went before him.

42When the Philistine looked around and saw David, he disdained him; for he was but a youth, and ruddy, and had a good looking face.

43The Philistine said to David, “Am I a dog, that you come to me with sticks?” The Philistine cursed David by his gods.

44The Philistine said to David, “Come to me, and I will give your flesh to the birds of the sky and to the animals of the field.”

45Then David said to the Philistine, “You come to me with a sword, with a spear, and with a javelin; but I come to you in the name of the LORD of Armies, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied.

46Today, the LORD will deliver you into my hand. I will strike you and take your head from off you. I will give the dead bodies of the army of the Philistines today to the birds of the sky and to the wild animals of the earth, that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel,

47and that all this assembly may know that the LORD doesn’t save with sword and spear; for the battle is the LORD’s, and he will give you into our hand.”

48When the Philistine arose, and walked and came near to meet David, David hurried and ran towards the army to meet the Philistine.

49David put his hand in his bag, took a stone and slung it, and struck the Philistine in his forehead. The stone sank into his forehead, and he fell on his face to the earth.

50So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and with a stone, and struck the Philistine and killed him; but there was no sword in David’s hand.

51Then David ran, stood over the Philistine, took his sword, drew it out of its sheath, killed him, and cut off his head with it. When the Philistines saw that their champion was dead, they fled.

52The men of Israel and of Judah arose and shouted, and pursued the Philistines as far as Gai and to the gates of Ekron. The wounded of the Philistines fell down by the way to Shaaraim, even to Gath and to Ekron.

53The children of Israel returned from chasing after the Philistines, and they plundered their camp.

54David took the head of the Philistine and brought it to Jerusalem, but he put his armour in his tent.

55When Saul saw David go out against the Philistine, he said to Abner, the captain of the army, “Abner, whose son is this youth?” Abner said, “As your soul lives, O king, I can’t tell.”

56The king said, “Enquire whose son the young man is!”

57As David returned from the slaughter of the Philistine, Abner took him and brought him before Saul with the head of the Philistine in his hand.

58Saul said to him, “Whose son are you, you young man?” David answered, “I am the son of your servant Jesse the Bethlehemite.”

5đầu đội mũ chiến bằng đồng, mình mặc áo giáp vảy cá ; áo giáp ấy bằng đồng, nặng năm mươi ký.

6Chân nó mang tấm che bằng đồng, vai đeo cây lao bằng đồng.

7Cán giáo của nó như trục khung cửi thợ dệt ; và mũi giáo của nó bằng sắt, nặng sáu ký. Đi trước mặt nó là người mang thuẫn.

8Nó đứng lại và gọi hàng ngũ Ít-ra-en. Nó bảo họ : “Sao chúng bay ra dàn trận ? Ta đây chẳng phải là người Phi-li-tinh, còn chúng bay chẳng phải là bề tôi Sa-un sao ? Hãy chọn lấy một người và nó hãy xuống đây với ta.

9Nếu nó đủ mạnh để chiến đấu với ta và hạ được ta, thì chúng tao sẽ làm nô lệ chúng bay. Còn nếu ta mạnh hơn nó và hạ được nó, thì chúng bay sẽ làm nô lệ chúng tao và sẽ hầu hạ chúng tao.”

10Tên Phi-li-tinh lại nói : “Ta đây, hôm nay ta thách hàng ngũ Ít-ra-en : Hãy đưa ra cho ta một người, để chiến đấu tay đôi !”

11Khi vua Sa-un và toàn thể Ít-ra-en nghe tên Phi-li-tinh nói những lời ấy thì họ kinh khiếp sợ hãi lắm.

12Đa-vít là con một người Ép-ra-tha ở Bê-lem thuộc Giu-đa ; ông này tên là Gie-sê và có tám người con trai. Thời vua Sa-un, ông đã già và giữa người ta, ông là người có tuổi.

13Ba con trai lớn của ông Gie-sê đã ra đi ; họ đi theo vua Sa-un để đánh giặc. Ba con trai của ông đã đi đánh giặc tên là : Ê-li-áp, trưởng nam, A-vi-na-đáp, thứ hai, và Sam-ma, thứ ba.

14Đa-vít là người nhỏ nhất, ba anh lớn đã đi theo vua Sa-un.

15Đa-vít đi đi về về từ chỗ vua Sa-un đến Bê-lem, để chăn chiên cho cha.

16Sáng nào chiều nào tên Phi-li-tinh cũng tiến ra và đứng như thế suốt bốn mươi ngày.

17Ông Gie-sê bảo Đa-vít, con ông : “Con mang cho các anh con hai thùng gié lúa rang với mười cái bánh này, và chạy đến trại các anh con.

18Còn mười miếng bánh sữa này thì con đưa cho viên chỉ huy ngàn quân. Con hãy hỏi thăm sức khoẻ các anh và lấy một vật của các anh làm bằng.

19Vua Sa-un và các anh con, cũng như toàn thể các người Ít-ra-en, ở thung lũng Cây Vân Hương, đang giao chiến với người Phi-li-tinh.”

20Sáng hôm sau, Đa-vít dậy sớm, để chiên dê lại cho một người giữ, rồi khăn gói lên đường như ông Gie-sê đã dạy. Cậu đến trại binh lúc quân đội đang ra trận và reo hò giao chiến.

21Người Ít-ra-en và người Phi-li-tinh dàn quân, trận tuyến đối nhau.

22Đa-vít để hành lý lại, giao cho người giữ đồ, rồi chạy ra trận tuyến, đến vấn an các anh.

23Cậu còn đang nói với họ, thì kìa từ trận tuyến Phi-li-tinh, tên đấu thủ tiến lên, nó là Go-li-át, người Phi-li-tinh, quê ở Gát. Nó nói những lời như trước và Đa-vít nghe thấy.

24Vừa thấy tên đó, mọi người Ít-ra-en trốn xa nó và sợ hãi lắm.

25Một người Ít-ra-en nói : “Anh em có thấy người đang tiến lên đó không ? Nó tiến lên là để thách thức Ít-ra-en đấy. Ai mà hạ được nó thì nhà vua sẽ cho của cải dư dật, sẽ gả con gái cho và sẽ cho gia đình người ấy được miễn sưu thuế tại Ít-ra-en.”

26Đa-vít hỏi những người đang đứng với cậu rằng : “Người ta sẽ làm gì cho kẻ hạ được tên Phi-li-tinh ấy và cất nỗi ô nhục khỏi Ít-ra-en ? Thật vậy, tên Phi-li-tinh không cắt bì kia là ai mà dám thách thức hàng ngũ của Thiên Chúa Hằng Sống ?”

27Dân trả lời cậu như trên, họ nói : “Người ta sẽ làm như thế cho kẻ hạ được nó.”

28Ê-li-áp, anh cả của cậu, nghe thấy cậu nói chuyện với những người ấy. Ê-li-áp nổi giận với Đa-vít và nói : “Mày xuống đây làm gì ? Mày bỏ mấy con chiên kia trong sa mạc cho ai ? Tao, tao biết mày hỗn láo và xấu bụng : mày xuống chỉ để xem đánh nhau !”

29Đa-vít trả lời : “Em có làm gì đâu ? Nói chuyện cũng không được sao ?”

30Cậu bỏ anh đến với người khác, và cũng hỏi như thế. Người ta cũng trả lời như trước.

31

32Đa-vít nói với vua Sa-un : “Đừng ai ngã lòng vì nó. Tôi tớ ngài đây sẽ đi chiến đấu với tên Phi-li-tinh ấy.”

33Vua Sa-un nói với Đa-vít : “Con không thể đến với tên Phi-li-tinh ấy để chiến đấu với nó, vì con chỉ là một đứa trẻ, còn nó là một chiến binh từ khi còn trẻ.”

34Đa-vít thưa với vua Sa-un : “Tôi tớ ngài là người chăn chiên dê cho cha. Khi sư tử hay gấu đến tha đi một con chiên trong bầy gia súc,

35thì con ra đuổi theo nó, đánh nó và giật con chiên khỏi mõm nó. Nó mà chồm lên con, thì con nắm lấy râu nó, đánh cho nó chết.

36Tôi tớ ngài đã đánh cả sư tử lẫn gấu, thì tên Phi-li-tinh không cắt bì này cũng sẽ như một trong các con vật đó, vì nó đã thách thức các hàng ngũ của Thiên Chúa hằng sống.”

37Đa-vít nói : “ĐỨC CHÚA là Đấng đã giật con khỏi vuốt sư tử và vuốt gấu, chính Người sẽ giật con khỏi tay tên Phi-li-tinh này.” Vua Sa-un nói với Đa-vít : “Con hãy đi, xin ĐỨC CHÚA ở với con !”

38Vua Sa-un lấy y phục của mình mặc cho Đa-vít, đội mũ chiến bằng đồng lên đầu và mặc áo giáp cho cậu.

39Đa-vít đeo gươm của vua ngoài y phục rồi thử bước đi, vì cậu không quen. Đa-vít nói với vua Sa-un : “Con không thể bước đi với những thứ này được, vì con không quen.” Rồi Đa-vít bỏ những thứ đó ra.

40Cậu cầm gậy trong tay, chọn lấy năm hòn đá cuội dưới suối, bỏ vào túi chăn chiên, vào bị của cậu, rồi tay cầm dây phóng đá, cậu tiến về phía tên Phi-li-tinh.

41Tên Phi-li-tinh từ từ tiến lại gần Đa-vít, đi trước mặt nó là người mang thuẫn.

42Tên Phi-li-tinh nhìn, và khi thấy Đa-vít, nó khinh dể cậu, vì cậu còn trẻ, có mái tóc hung và đẹp trai.

43Tên Phi-li-tinh nói với Đa-vít : “Tao là chó hay sao mà mày cầm gậy đến với tao ?” Và tên Phi-li-tinh lấy tên các thần của mình mà nguyền rủa Đa-vít.

44Tên Phi-li-tinh nói với Đa-vít : “Đến đây với tao, tao sẽ đem thịt mày làm mồi cho chim trời và dã thú.”

45Đa-vít bảo tên Phi-li-tinh : “Mày mang gươm, mang giáo, cầm lao mà đến với tao. Còn tao, tao đến với mày nhân danh ĐỨC CHÚA các đạo binh là Thiên Chúa các hàng ngũ Ít-ra-en mà mày thách thức.

46Ngay hôm nay ĐỨC CHÚA sẽ nộp mày vào tay tao, tao sẽ hạ mày và làm cho đầu mày lìa khỏi thân. Ngay hôm nay tao sẽ đem xác chết của quân đội Phi-li-tinh làm mồi cho chim trời và dã thú. Toàn cõi đất sẽ biết rằng có một Thiên Chúa che chở Ít-ra-en,

47và toàn thể đại hội này sẽ biết rằng không phải nhờ gươm, nhờ giáo mà ĐỨC CHÚA ban chiến thắng, vì chiến đấu là việc của ĐỨC CHÚA và Người sẽ trao chúng mày vào tay chúng tao !”

48Khi tên Phi-li-tinh bắt đầu xông lên và đến gần để đương đầu với Đa-vít, thì Đa-vít vội vàng chạy từ trận tuyến ra để đương đầu với tên Phi-li-tinh.

49Đa-vít thọc tay vào bị, rút từ đó ra một hòn đá, rồi dùng dây phóng mà ném trúng vào trán tên Phi-li-tinh. Hòn đá cắm sâu vào trán, khiến nó ngã sấp mặt xuống đất.

50Thế là Đa-vít thắng tên Phi-li-tinh nhờ dây phóng và hòn đá. Cậu hạ tên Phi-li-tinh và giết nó. Nhưng trong tay Đa-vít không có gươm.

51Người Phi-li-tinh thấy người hùng của mình đã chết thì chạy trốn.

52Người Ít-ra-en và Giu-đa xông lên, reo hò và đuổi theo người Phi-li-tinh cho đến lối vào thung lũng và cho đến cửa thành Éc-rôn. Thây người Phi-li-tinh ngã gục trên đường Sa-a-ra-gim, cho đến Gát và Éc-rôn.

53Sau khi ráo riết đuổi theo người Phi-li-tinh, con cái Ít-ra-en quay trở lại cướp phá trại chúng.

54Đa-vít lấy đầu tên Phi-li-tinh và đem về Giê-ru-sa-lem ; còn các vũ khí của nó thì đặt trong lều mình.

55Khi vua Sa-un thấy Đa-vít ra đương đầu với tên Phi-li-tinh, thì hỏi ông Áp-ne, tướng chỉ huy quân đội : “Đứa trẻ ấy là con ai, Áp-ne ?” Ông Áp-ne trả lời : “Thưa đức vua, tôi xin lấy mạng sống ngài mà thề, tôi không biết !”

56Vua nói : “Hỏi xem thiếu niên ấy là con ai.”

57Lúc Đa-vít trở về sau khi hạ tên Phi-li-tinh, ông Áp-ne đón cậu, dẫn cậu đến trước mặt vua Sa-un, tay cậu xách cái đầu tên Phi-li-tinh.

58Vua Sa-un hỏi cậu : “Hỡi người thanh niên, con là con ai ?” Đa-vít trả lời : “Con là con của tôi tớ ngài là Gie-sê, người Bê-lem.”
