Joshua

1The LORD said to Joshua, “Don’t be afraid, and don’t be dismayed. Take all the warriors with you, and arise, go up to Ai. Behold, I have given into your hand the king of Ai, with his people, his city, and his land.

2You shall do to Ai and her king as you did to Jericho and her king, except you shall take its goods and its livestock for yourselves. Set an ambush for the city behind it.”

3So Joshua arose, with all the warriors, to go up to Ai. Joshua chose thirty thousand men, the mighty men of valor, and sent them out by night.

4He commanded them, saying, “Behold, you shall lie in ambush against the city, behind the city. Don’t go very far from the city, but all of you be ready.

5I and all the people who are with me will approach the city. It shall happen, when they come out against us, as at the first, that we will flee before them.

6They will come out after us until we have drawn them away from the city; for they will say, ‘They flee before us, like the first time.’ So we will flee before them,

7and you shall rise up from the ambush, and take possession of the city; for the LORD your God will deliver it into your hand.

8It shall be, when you have seized the city, that you shall set the city on fire. You shall do this according to the LORD’s word. Behold, I have commanded you.”

9Joshua sent them out; and they went to set up the ambush, and stayed between Bethel and Ai on the west side of Ai; but Joshua stayed among the people that night.

10Joshua rose up early in the morning, mustered the people, and went up, he and the elders of Israel, before the people to Ai.

11All the people, even the men of war who were with him, went up and came near, and came before the city and encamped on the north side of Ai. Now there was a valley between him and Ai.

12He took about five thousand men, and set them in ambush between Bethel and Ai, on the west side of the city.

13So they set the people, even all the army who was on the north of the city, and their ambush on the west of the city; and Joshua went that night into the middle of the valley.

14When the king of Ai saw it, they hurried and rose up early, and the men of the city went out against Israel to battle, he and all his people, at the time appointed, before the Arabah; but he didn’t know that there was an ambush against him behind the city.

15Joshua and all Israel made as if they were beaten before them, and fled by the way of the wilderness.

16All the people who were in the city were called together to pursue after them. They pursued Joshua, and were drawn away from the city.

17There was not a man left in Ai or Bethel who didn’t go out after Israel. They left the city open, and pursued Israel.

18The LORD said to Joshua, “Stretch out the javelin that is in your hand toward Ai, for I will give it into your hand.” Joshua stretched out the javelin that was in his hand toward the city.

19The ambush arose quickly out of their place, and they ran as soon as he had stretched out his hand and entered into the city and took it. They hurried and set the city on fire.

20When the men of Ai looked behind them, they saw, and behold, the smoke of the city ascended up to heaven, and they had no power to flee this way or that way. The people who fled to the wilderness turned back on the pursuers.

21When Joshua and all Israel saw that the ambush had taken the city, and that the smoke of the city ascended, then they turned back and killed the men of Ai.

22The others came out of the city against them, so they were in the middle of Israel, some on this side, and some on that side. They struck them, so that they let none of them remain or escape.

23They captured the king of Ai alive, and brought him to Joshua.

24When Israel had finished killing all the inhabitants of Ai in the field, in the wilderness in which they pursued them, and they had all fallen by the edge of the sword until they were consumed, all Israel returned to Ai and struck it with the edge of the sword.

25All that fell that day, both of men and women, were twelve thousand, even all the people of Ai.

26For Joshua didn’t draw back his hand, with which he stretched out the javelin, until he had utterly destroyed all the inhabitants of Ai.

27Israel took for themselves only the livestock and the goods of that city, according to the LORD’s word which he commanded Joshua.

28So Joshua burned Ai and made it a heap forever, even a desolation, to this day.

29He hanged the king of Ai on a tree until the evening. At sundown, Joshua commanded, and they took his body down from the tree and threw it at the entrance of the gate of the city, and raised a great heap of stones on it that remains to this day.

30Then Joshua built an altar to the LORD, the God of Israel, on Mount Ebal,

31as Moses the servant of the LORD commanded the children of Israel, as it is written in the book of the law of Moses: an altar of uncut stones, on which no one had lifted up any iron. They offered burnt offerings on it to the LORD and sacrificed peace offerings.

32He wrote there on the stones a copy of Moses’ law, which he wrote in the presence of the children of Israel.

33All Israel, with their elders, officers, and judges, stood on both sides of the ark before the Levitical priests, who carried the ark of the LORD’s covenant, the foreigner as well as the native; half of them in front of Mount Gerizim, and half of them in front of Mount Ebal, as Moses the servant of the LORD had commanded at the first, that they should bless the people of Israel.

34Afterward he read all the words of the law, the blessing and the curse, according to all that is written in the book of the law.

35There was not a word of all that Moses commanded which Joshua didn’t read before all the assembly of Israel, with the women, the little ones, and the foreigners who were among them.

1Kế đó, Đức Giê-hô-va phán cùng Giô-suê rằng: Ngươi chớ sợ, chớ ái ngại. Hãy đem theo mình hết thảy quân lính, chổi dậy đi lên hãm đánh thành A-hi. Kìa, ta đã phó vào tay ngươi vua A-hi, dân sự, thành, và xứ của người.

2Ngươi phải đãi A-hi và vua nó như ngươi đã đãi Giê-ri-cô và vua nó; nhưng các ngươi sẽ đoạt lấy hóa tài và súc vật cho mình. Hãy phục binh sau thành.

3Vậy, Giô-suê đứng dậy cùng các quân lính đặng lên đánh A-hi. Người chọn ba muôn người mạnh dạn, sai đi ban đêm,

4và truyền lịnh này rằng: Hãy coi, các ngươi sẽ phục binh sau thành; chớ dang ra xa thành quá, hãy dàn cho sẵn.

5Còn ta với cả dân sự theo ta, sẽ đi gần lại thành. Khi chúng nó ra đón đánh chúng ta như lần trước, thì chúng ta sẽ chạy trốn trước mặt chúng nó.

6Chúng nó sẽ rượt theo chúng ta cho đến chừng chúng ta dụ chúng nó ra cách xa khỏi thành; vì họ nói rằng: Chúng nó chạy trốn ta như lần trước. Trong lúc chúng ta chạy trốn trước mặt chúng nó,

7thì các ngươi sẽ ra khỏi nơi phục binh mà hãm lấy thành; Giê-hô-va Đức Chúa Trời các ngươi sẽ phó thành vào tay các ngươi.

8Khi các ngươi chiếm thành rồi, thì phải phóng hỏa nó; hãy làm theo lời của Đức Giê-hô-va. Hãy coi, này là lịnh ta truyền cho các ngươi.

9Vậy, Giô-suê sai các người đó đi; họ phục giữa khoảng Bê-tên và A-hi, về phía tây của A-hi; còn Giô-suê đêm đó ngủ tại giữa dân sự.

10Kế ấy, Giô-suê dậy sớm, điểm dân sự; người cùng các trưởng lão đi lên trước mặt dân đến thành A-hi.

11Hết thảy quân lính theo người đi lên đến gần trước mặt thành, và đóng trại về phía bắc A-hi: có cái trũng chạy dài giữa họ và thành A-hi.

12Giô-suê bèn đem chừng năm ngàn lính phục giữa khoảng Bê-tên và A-hi, về phía tây của thành.

13Khi dân sự đã đóng trại nơi phía bắc của thành, và phục binh về phía tây rồi, thì đêm đó Giô-suê đi xớm tới trong trũng.

14Vua thành ấy vừa thấy điều đó, người ta bèn lật đật dậy sớm, vua và cả dân sự người đều đi ra đón Y-sơ-ra-ên tại nơi đã chỉ bảo, về phía đồng bằng, đặng giao chiến; song vua không biết rằng có một đạo binh phục ở phía sau thành.

15Giô-suê và cả Y-sơ-ra-ên để cho chúng nó đánh bại mình, và chạy trốn về phía đồng vắng.

16Hết thảy dân sự trong thành đều hiệp lại đặng đuổi theo. Vậy chúng rượt theo Giô-suê và bị dụ cách xa khỏi thành;

17chẳng có một ai ở thành A-hi hay là ở Bê-tên mà không ra đuổi theo Y-sơ-ra-ên; họ bỏ thành trống không để đuổi theo Y-sơ-ra-ên.

18Bấy giờ, Đức Giê-hô-va phán cùng Giô-suê rằng: Hãy giơ giáo ngươi cầm nơi tay ra về hướng thành A-hi, vì ta sẽ phó thành vào tay ngươi. Giô-suê bèn giơ giáo mình cầm nơi tay ra về hướng thành.

19Vừa giơ tay lên, binh phục lập tức đứng dậy khỏi chỗ mình núp mà chạy vào thành, chiếm lấy và phóng hỏa nó.

20Người thành A-hi quay lại, nhìn thấy khói đốt thành bay lên trời; họ chẳng một phương thế nào đặng trốn về phía này hay là phía kia. Vả, dân sự chạy trốn về phía đồng vắng trở lộn lại đánh những kẻ rượt đuổi theo mình.

21Khi Giô-suê và cả Y-sơ-ra-ên thấy binh phục đã lấy thành, và khói đốt thành bay lên, bèn trở về đánh người A-hi.

22Các binh khác cũng ra khỏi thành đón đánh dân A-hi; như vậy chúng nó bị dân Y-sơ-ra-ên vây phủ, bên này có đạo này, bên kia có quân kia. Người ta đánh chúng nó đến đỗi không còn để lại kẻ nào sống hay là cho ai thoát được.

23Binh bắt sống vua A-hi, và dẫn đến cùng Giô-suê.

24Khi dân Y-sơ-ra-ên đã giết xong hết thảy người thành A-hi, hoặc trong đồng ruộng hay là trong đồng vắng, là nơi chúng nó bị đuổi theo, và khi hết thảy, đến đỗi người chót, đã ngã rạp dưới lưỡi gươm rồi, thì dân Y-sơ-ra-ên trở về A-hi và giết bằng lưỡi gươm những kẻ còn ở tại đó.

25Trong ngày đó, hết thảy người A-hi, nam và nữ, đều bị ngã chết, số là mười hai ngàn người.

26Giô-suê chẳng rút lại tay mình đã cầm giơ thẳng ra với cây giáo, cho đến chừng nào người ta đã diệt hết thảy người thành A-hi.

27Song dân Y-sơ-ra-ên cướp cho mình những súc vật và hóa tài của thành này, y như Đức Giê-hô-va đã phán dặn Giô-suê.

28Vậy, Giô-suê phóng hỏa thành A-hi, và làm cho nó ra một đống hư tàn đời đời, y như hãy còn đến ngày nay.

29Người biểu treo vua A-hi lên trên một cây và để đó cho đến chiều; nhưng khi mặt trời lặn, Giô-suê biểu người ta hạ thây xuống khỏi cây. Người ta đem liệng thây đó nơi cửa thành, và chất lên trên một đống đá lớn, hãy còn đến ngày nay.

30Bấy giờ, Giô-suê lập một bàn thờ cho Giê-hô-va Đức Chúa Trời của Y-sơ-ra-ên tại trên núi Ê-banh,

31y như Môi-se, tôi tớ của Đức Giê-hô-va, đã dặn biểu dân Y-sơ-ra-ên, và đã có chép trong sách luật pháp Môi-se: ấy là một bàn thờ bằng đá nguyên khối, sắt chưa đụng đến. ỳ đó dân sự dâng của lễ thiêu cho Đức Giê-hô-va, và dâng của lễ thù ân.

32Tại đó Giô-suê cũng khắc trên đá một bản luật pháp mà Môi-se đã chép trước mặt dân Y-sơ-ra-ên.

33Cả Y-sơ-ra-ên, các trưởng lão, các quan cai, và các quan xét đứng hai bên hòm trước mặt những thầy tế lễ, người Lê-vi, là người khiêng hòm giao ước ủa Đức Giê-hô-va. Những khách lạ luôn với dân Y-sơ-ra-ên đều có mặt tại đó, phân nửa này ở về phía núi Ga-ri-xim, và phân nửa kia ở về phía núi Ê-banh, tùy theo lịnh mà Môi-se, tôi tớ của Đức Giê-hô-va, trước đã truyền cho chúc phước dân Y-sơ-ra-ên.

34Đoạn, Giô-suê đọc hết các lời luật pháp, sự chúc lành và sự chúc dữ, y như đã chép trong sách luật pháp.

35Chẳng có lời nào về mọi điều Môi-se đã truyền dặng mà Giô-suê không đọc tại trước mặt cả hội chúng Y-sơ-ra-ên, trước mặt đàn bà, con nít, và khách lạ ở giữa họ.
