1Sau khi nói những lời đó, Đức Giê-su đi ra cùng với các môn đệ, sang bên kia suối Kít-rôn. Ở đó, có một thửa vườn, Người cùng với các môn đệ đi vào.

2Giu-đa, kẻ nộp Người, cũng biết nơi này, vì Người thường tụ họp ở đó với các môn đệ.

3Vậy, Giu-đa tới đó, dẫn một toán quân cùng đám thuộc hạ của các thượng tế và nhóm Pha-ri-sêu ; họ mang theo đèn đuốc và khí giới.

4Đức Giê-su biết mọi việc sắp xảy đến cho mình, nên tiến ra và hỏi : “Các anh tìm ai ?”

5Họ đáp : “Tìm Giê-su Na-da-rét.” Người nói : “Chính tôi đây.” Giu-đa, kẻ nộp Người, cũng đứng chung với họ.

6Khi Người vừa nói : “Chính tôi đây”, thì họ lùi lại và ngã xuống đất.

7Người lại hỏi một lần nữa : “Các anh tìm ai ?” Họ đáp : “Tìm Giê-su Na-da-rét.”

8Đức Giê-su nói : “Tôi đã bảo các anh là chính tôi đây. Vậy, nếu các anh tìm bắt tôi, thì hãy để cho những người này đi.”

9Thế là ứng nghiệm lời Đức Giê-su đã nói : “Những người Cha đã ban cho con, con không để mất một ai.”

10Ông Si-môn Phê-rô có sẵn một thanh gươm, bèn tuốt ra, nhằm người đầy tớ vị thượng tế, mà chém đứt tai phải của y. Người đầy tớ ấy tên là Man-khô.

11Đức Giê-su nói với ông Phê-rô : “Hãy xỏ gươm vào bao. Chén mà Chúa Cha đã trao cho Thầy, lẽ nào Thầy chẳng uống ?”

12Bấy giờ toán quân và viên chỉ huy cùng đám thuộc hạ của người Do-thái bắt Đức Giê-su và trói Người lại.

13Trước tiên, họ điệu Đức Giê-su đến ông Kha-nan là nhạc phụ ông Cai-pha. Ông Cai-pha làm thượng tế năm đó.

14Chính ông này đã đề nghị với người Do-thái là nên để một người chết thay cho dân thì hơn.

15Ông Si-môn Phê-rô và một môn đệ khác đi theo Đức Giê-su. Người môn đệ này quen biết vị thượng tế, nên cùng với Đức Giê-su vào sân trong của tư dinh vị thượng tế.

16Còn ông Phê-rô đứng ở phía ngoài, gần cổng. Người môn đệ kia quen biết vị thượng tế ra nói với chị giữ cổng, rồi dẫn ông Phê-rô vào.

17Người tớ gái giữ cổng nói với ông Phê-rô : “Cả bác nữa, bác không thuộc nhóm môn đệ của người ấy sao ?” Ông liền đáp : “Đâu phải.”

18Vì trời lạnh, các đầy tớ và thuộc hạ đốt than và đứng sưởi ở đó ; ông Phê-rô cũng đứng sưởi với họ.

19Vị thượng tế tra hỏi Đức Giê-su về các môn đệ và giáo huấn của Người.

20Đức Giê-su trả lời : “Tôi đã nói công khai trước mặt thiên hạ ; tôi hằng giảng dạy trong hội đường và tại Đền Thờ, nơi mọi người Do-thái tụ họp. Tôi không hề nói điều gì lén lút.

21Sao ông lại hỏi tôi ? Điều tôi đã nói, xin cứ hỏi những người đã nghe tôi. Chính họ biết tôi đã nói gì.”

22Đức Giê-su vừa dứt lời, thì một tên trong nhóm thuộc hạ đứng đó vả vào mặt Người mà nói : “Anh trả lời vị thượng tế như thế ư ?”

23Đức Giê-su đáp : “Nếu tôi nói sai, anh chứng minh xem sai ở chỗ nào ; còn nếu tôi nói phải, sao anh lại đánh tôi ?”

24Ông Kha-nan cho giải Người đến thượng tế Cai-pha, Người vẫn bị trói.

25Còn ông Si-môn Phê-rô thì vẫn đứng sưởi ở đó. Người ta nói với ông : “Cả bác nữa, bác không thuộc nhóm môn đệ của ông ấy sao ?” Ông liền chối : “Đâu phải.”

26Một trong các đầy tớ của vị thượng tế, có họ với người bị ông Phê-rô chém đứt tai, lên tiếng hỏi : “Tôi đã chẳng thấy bác ở trong vườn với ông ấy sao ?”

27Một lần nữa ông Phê-rô lại chối, và ngay lúc ấy gà liền gáy.

28Vậy, người Do-thái điệu Đức Giê-su từ nhà ông Cai-pha đến dinh tổng trấn. Lúc đó trời vừa sáng. Nhưng họ không vào dinh kẻo bị nhiễm uế mà không ăn lễ Vượt Qua được.

29Vì thế, tổng trấn Phi-la-tô ra ngoài gặp họ và hỏi : “Các người tố cáo ông này về tội gì ?”

30Họ đáp : “Nếu ông này không làm điều ác, thì chúng tôi đã chẳng đem nộp cho quan.”

31Ông Phi-la-tô bảo họ : “Các người cứ đem ông ta đi mà xét xử theo luật của các người.” Người Do-thái đáp : “Chúng tôi không có quyền xử tử ai cả.”

32Thế là ứng nghiệm lời Đức Giê-su đã nói, khi ám chỉ Người sẽ phải chết cách nào.

33Ông Phi-la-tô trở vào dinh, cho gọi Đức Giê-su và nói với Người : “Ông có phải là vua dân Do-thái không ?”

34Đức Giê-su đáp : “Ngài tự ý nói điều ấy, hay những người khác đã nói với ngài về tôi ?”

35Ông Phi-la-tô trả lời : “Tôi là người Do-thái sao ? Chính dân của ông và các thượng tế đã nộp ông cho tôi. Ông đã làm gì ?”

36Đức Giê-su trả lời : “Nước tôi không thuộc về thế gian này. Nếu Nước tôi thuộc về thế gian này, thuộc hạ của tôi đã chiến đấu không để tôi bị nộp cho người Do-thái. Nhưng thật ra Nước tôi không thuộc chốn này.”

37Ông Phi-la-tô liền hỏi : “Vậy ông là vua sao ?” Đức Giê-su đáp : “Chính ngài nói rằng tôi là vua. Tôi đã sinh ra và đã đến thế gian nhằm mục đích này : làm chứng cho sự thật. Ai đứng về phía sự thật thì nghe tiếng tôi.”

38Nói thế rồi, ông lại ra gặp người Do-thái và bảo họ : “Phần ta, ta không tìm thấy lý do nào để kết tội ông ấy.

39Theo tục lệ của các người, vào dịp lễ Vượt Qua, ta thường tha một người nào đó cho các người. Vậy các người có muốn ta tha vua dân Do-thái cho các người không ?”

40Họ lại la lên rằng : “Đừng tha nó, nhưng xin tha Ba-ra-ba !” Mà Ba-ra-ba là một tên cướp.

1When Jesus had said these things, he went forth with his disciples over the brook Cedron, where there was a garden, into which he entered with his disciples.

2And Judas also, who betrayed him, knew the place; because Jesus had often resorted thither together with his disciples.

3Judas therefore having received a band of soldiers and servants from the chief priests and the Pharisees, cometh thither with lanterns and torches and weapons.

4Jesus therefore, knowing all things that should come upon him, went forth, and said to them: Whom seek ye?

5They answered him: Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus saith to them: I am he. And Judas also, who betrayed him, stood with them.

6As soon therefore as he had said to them: I am he; they went backward, and fell to the ground.

7Again therefore he asked them: Whom seek ye? And they said, Jesus of Nazareth.

8Jesus answered, I have told you that I am he. If therefore you seek me, let these go their way.

9That the word might be fulfilled which he said: Of them whom thou hast given me, I have not lost any one.

10Then Simon Peter, having a sword, drew it, and struck the servant of the high priest, and cut off his right ear. And the name of the servant was Malchus.

11Jesus therefore said to Peter: Put up thy sword into the scabbard. The chalice which my Father hath given me, shall I not drink it?

12Then the band and the tribune, and the servants of the Jews, took Jesus, and bound him:

13And they led him away to Annas first, for he was father in law to Caiphas, who was the high priest of that year.

14Now Caiphas was he who had given the counsel to the Jews: That it was expedient that one man should die for the people.

15And Simon Peter followed Jesus, and so did another disciple. And that disciple was known to the high priest, and went in with Jesus into the court of the high priest.

16But Peter stood at the door without. The other disciple therefore, who was known to the high priest, went out, and spoke to the portress, and brought in Peter.

17The maid therefore that was portress, saith to Peter: Art not thou also one of this man’s disciples? He saith: I am not.

18Now the servants and ministers stood at a fire of coals, because it was cold, and warmed themselves. And with them was Peter also, standing, and warming himself.

19The high priest therefore asked Jesus of his disciples, and of his doctrine.

20Jesus answered him: I have spoken openly to the world: I have always taught in the synagogue, and in the temple, whither all the Jews resort; and in secret I have spoken nothing.

21Why asketh thou me? ask them who have heard what I have spoken unto them: behold they know what things I have said.

22And when he had said these things, one of the servants standing by, gave Jesus a blow, saying: Answerest thou the high priest so?

23Jesus answered him: If I have spoken evil, give testimony of the evil; but if well, why strikest thou me?

24And Annas sent him bound to Caiphas the high priest.

25And Simon Peter was standing, and warming himself. They said therefore to him: Art not thou also one of his disciples? He denied it, and said: I am not.

26One of the servants of the high priest (a kinsman to him whose ear Peter cut off) saith to him: Did I not see thee in the garden with him?

27Again therefore Peter denied; and immediately the cock crew.

28Then they led Jesus from Caiphas to the governor’s hall. And it was morning; and they went not into the hall, that they might not be defiled, but that they might eat the pasch.

29Pilate therefore went out to them, and said: What accusation bring you against this man?

30They answered, and said to him: If he were not a malefactor, we would not have delivered him up to thee.

31Pilate therefore said to them: Take him you, and judge him according to your law. The Jews therefore said to him: It is not lawful for us to put any man to death;

32That the word of Jesus might be fulfilled, which he said, signifying what death he should die.

33Pilate therefore went into the hall again, and called Jesus, and said to him: Art thou the king of the Jews?

34Jesus answered: Sayest thou this thing of thyself, or have others told it thee of me?

35Pilate answered: Am I a Jew? Thy own nation, and the chief priests, have delivered thee up to me: what hast thou done?

36Jesus answered: My kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were of this world, my servants would certainly strive that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now my kingdom is not from hence.

37Pilate therefore said to him: Art thou a king then? Jesus answered: Thou sayest that I am a king. For this was I born, and for this came I into the world; that I should give testimony to the truth. Every one that is of the truth, heareth my voice.

38Pilate saith to him: What is truth? And when he said this, he went out again to the Jews, and saith to them: I find no cause in him.

39But you have a custom that I should release one unto you at the pasch: will you, therefore, that I release unto you the king of the Jews?

40Then cried they all again, saying: Not this man, but Barabbas. Now Barabbas was a robber.
