John

1Then Pilate therefore took Jesus, and scourged him.

2And the soldiers platted a crown of thorns, and put it on his head, and they put on him a purple robe,

3And said, Hail, King of the Jews! and they smote him with their hands.

4Pilate therefore went forth again, and saith unto them, Behold, I bring him forth to you, that ye may know that I find no fault in him.

5Then came Jesus forth, wearing the crown of thorns, and the purple robe. And Pilate saith unto them, Behold the man!

6When the chief priests therefore and officers saw him, they cried out, saying, Crucify him, crucify him. Pilate saith unto them, Take ye him, and crucify him: for I find no fault in him.

7The Jews answered him, We have a law, and by our law he ought to die, because he made himself the Son of God.

8¶ When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he was the more afraid;

9And went again into the judgment hall, and saith unto Jesus, Whence art thou? But Jesus gave him no answer.

10Then saith Pilate unto him, Speakest thou not unto me? knowest thou not that I have power to crucify thee, and have power to release thee?

11Jesus answered,Thou couldest have no power at all against me, except it were given thee from above: therefore he that delivered me unto thee hath the greater sin.

12And from thenceforth Pilate sought to release him: but the Jews cried out, saying, If thou let this man go, thou art not Cæsar’s friend: whosoever maketh himself a king speaketh against Cæsar.

13¶ When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he brought Jesus forth, and sat down in the judgment seat in a place that is called the Pavement, but in the Hebrew, Gabbatha.

14And it was the preparation of the passover, and about the sixth hour: and he saith unto the Jews, Behold your King!

15But they cried out, Away with him, away with him, crucify him. Pilate saith unto them, Shall I crucify your King? The chief priests answered, We have no king but Cæsar.

16Then delivered he him therefore unto them to be crucified. And they took Jesus, and led him away.

17And he bearing his cross went forth into a place called the place of a skull, which is called in the Hebrew Golgotha:

18Where they crucified him, and two other with him, on either side one, and Jesus in the midst.

19¶ And Pilate wrote a title, and put it on the cross. And the writing was, JESUS OF NAZARETH THE KING OF THE JEWS.

20This title then read many of the Jews: for the place where Jesus was crucified was nigh to the city: and it was written in Hebrew, and Greek, and Latin.

21Then said the chief priests of the Jews to Pilate, Write not, The King of the Jews; but that he said, I am King of the Jews.

22Pilate answered, What I have written I have written.

23¶ Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took his garments, and made four parts, to every soldier a part; and also his coat: now the coat was without seam, woven from the top throughout.

24They said therefore among themselves, Let us not rend it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall be: that the scripture might be fulfilled, which saith, They parted my raiment among them, and for my vesture they did cast lots. These things therefore the soldiers did.

25¶ Now there stood by the cross of Jesus his mother, and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene.

26When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he loved, he saith unto his mother,Woman, behold thy son!

27Then saith he to the disciple,Behold thy mother!And from that hour that disciple took her unto his own home.

28¶ After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, saith,I thirst.

29Now there was set a vessel full of vinegar: and they filled a spunge with vinegar, and put it upon hyssop, and put it to his mouth.

30When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said,It is finished:and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.

31The Jews therefore, because it was the preparation, that the bodies should not remain upon the cross on the sabbath day, (for that sabbath day was an high day,) besought Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away.

32Then came the soldiers, and brake the legs of the first, and of the other which was crucified with him.

33But when they came to Jesus, and saw that he was dead already, they brake not his legs:

34But one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and forthwith came there out blood and water.

35And he that saw it bare record, and his record is true: and he knoweth that he saith true, that ye might believe.

36For these things were done, that the scripture should be fulfilled, A bone of him shall not be broken.

37And again another scripture saith, They shall look on him whom they pierced.

38¶ And after this Joseph of Arimathaea, being a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews, besought Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus: and Pilate gave him leave. He came therefore, and took the body of Jesus.

39And there came also Nicodemus, which at the first came to Jesus by night, and brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about an hundred pound weight.

40Then took they the body of Jesus, and wound it in linen clothes with the spices, as the manner of the Jews is to bury.

41Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden; and in the garden a new sepulchre, wherein was never man yet laid.

42There laid they Jesus therefore because of the Jews’ preparation day; for the sepulchre was nigh at hand.

Chúa Giê-xu Bị Kết Án Tử

1Phi-lát ra lệnh đánh đòn Chúa Giê-xu.

2Bọn lính đan một vương miện bằng gai đội lên đầu Chúa, và họ khoác lên người Chúa chiếc áo dài màu tía.

3Họ xúm lại chế giễu: “Kính mừng vua người Do Thái!” Họ lại tát vào mặt Chúa.

4Phi-lát bước ra sân một lần nữa, tuyên bố với người Do Thái: “Này, ta giao người ấy lại cho các anh, nhưng nên hiểu rõ ràng rằng ta không tìm thấy người có tội gì.”

5Chúa Giê-xu bước ra, đầu đội mão gai, mình khoác áo dài tía. Phi-lát nói: “Người ấy kia kìa!”

6Các thầy trưởng tế và các lính tuần cảnh Đền Thờ vừa thấy Chúa liền reo hò: “Đóng đinh hắn! Đóng đinh hắn!” Phi-lát đáp: “Các anh cứ đóng đinh đi! Ta không thấy người này có tội.”

7Các lãnh đạo Do Thái cãi: “Theo luật của chúng tôi, hắn phải bị xử tử, vì hắn tự xưng là Con của Đức Chúa Trời.”

8Phi-lát nghe lời đó càng thêm sợ hãi.

9Ông đem Chúa Giê-xu vào dinh và hỏi một lần nữa: “Anh từ đâu đến?” Nhưng Chúa Giê-xu không đáp một lời.

10Phi-lát hỏi: “Sao anh không trả lời? Anh không biết ta có quyền tha anh, cũng có quyền đóng đinh anh sao?”

11Chúa Giê-xu đáp: “Ông không có quyền gì trên Ta cả, nếu không do trên ban cho. Vì vậy người bắt Ta giải nộp cho ông còn nặng tội hơn ông nữa.”

12Nghe Chúa giải đáp, Phi-lát tìm cách phóng thích Ngài, nhưng các lãnh đạo Do Thái dọa: “Nếu ông tha người này, thì ông không trung thành với hoàng đế. Ai tự xưng mình là vua tức là người phản nghịch với hoàng đế.”

13Nghe họ nói vậy, Phi-lát liền ra lệnh giải Chúa Giê-xu ra cho ông xử tại Tòa Lát Đá (tiếng Hê-bơ-rơ gọi là Ga-ba-tha.)

14Hôm ấy nhằm ngày chuẩn bị lễ Vượt Qua. Phi-lát nói với người Do Thái: “Đây, vua của các anh!”

15Họ kêu gào: “Giết hắn đi! Giết hắn đi! Hãy đóng đinh hắn!” Phi-lát hỏi: “Không lẽ ta đem đóng đinh vua các anh sao?” Các thầy trưởng tế đáp: “Ngoài Sê-sa, chúng tôi không có vua nào khác.”

16Kế đến Phi-lát giao Chúa Giê-xu cho họ đóng đinh. Sự Đóng Đinh Vậy họ dẫn Chúa Giê-xu đi.

17Chúa vác cây thập tự lên ngọn đồi Sọ, (tiếng Hê-bơ-rơ gọi là Gô-gô-tha).

18Tại đây họ đóng đinh Chúa trên cây thập tự. Cũng có hai tướng cướp bị đóng đinh hai bên Chúa, mỗi bên một người.

19Phi-lát cho treo tấm bảng trên cây thập tự, ghi dòng chữ: “Giê-xu người Na-xa-rét, Vua người Do Thái.”

20Nhiều người xem thấy dòng chữ đó, vì nơi Chúa Giê-xu bị đóng đinh rất gần thành phố, và tấm bảng viết bằng tiếng Hê-bơ-rơ, La-tinh, và Hy Lạp.

21Các thầy trưởng tế đến khiếu nại với Phi-lát: “Xin đừng viết: ‘Vua người Do Thái,’ nhưng sửa lại ‘Người này nói: Ta là Vua người Do Thái.’”

22Phi-lát gắt lên: “Không, điều gì ta viết thì ta đã viết xong rồi.”

23Sau khi mấy người lính đóng đinh Chúa Giê-xu, họ chia áo xống Ngài làm bốn phần, mỗi người lấy một phần. Họ cũng lấy áo dài của Chúa, đó là tấm áo dệt từ trên xuống không có đường may.

24Họ nói: “Tốt hơn là đừng xé áo ra, chúng ta hãy gieo súc sắc xem tấm áo đó về phần ai.” Việc xảy ra đúng như lời Thánh Kinh: “Họ chia nhau áo xống Ta và bắt thăm lấy áo dài Ta.”Đó là điều mà họ đã làm.

25Đứng gần cây thập tự có mẹ Chúa Giê-xu, dì Chúa là Ma-ri (vợ Cơ-lưu-ba), và Ma-ri Ma-đơ-len.

26Khi Chúa Giê-xu thấy mẹ và môn đệ Ngài yêu đứng bên cạnh, Chúa nói với mẹ: “Thưa bà, anh này là con của bà.”

27Chúa cũng nói với môn đệ ấy: “Đây là mẹ của con.” Từ đó môn đệ ấy rước bà về nhà phụng dưỡng.

Sự Chết của Chúa Giê-xu

28Chúa Giê-xu biết sứ mệnh đã xong, và muốn làm đúng lời Thánh Kinh, Chúa nói: “Ta khát.”

29Tại đó có một bình giấm. Có người lấy miếng bông đá tẩm đầy giấm đặt lên cành phương thảo, đưa kề miệng Chúa.

30Khi Chúa Giê-xu nếm giấm rồi, Ngài phán: “Mọi việc đã hoàn thành!” Rồi Ngài gục đầu, trút linh hồn.

31Khi ấy là ngày Chuẩn Bị, nên người Do Thái không muốn để xác người phơi trên cây thập tự vào ngày Sa-bát (hơn nữa ngày Sa-bát này rất long trọng vì trùng với lễ Vượt Qua). Vậy nên họ yêu cầu Phi-lát ra lệnh đánh gãy chân từng người cho đến chết. Rồi họ đem các thi thể xuống.

32Mấy người lính đến đánh gãy chân hai tướng cướp bị đóng đinh với Chúa Giê-xu.

33Nhưng khi đến gần Chúa Giê-xu, họ thấy Chúa đã chết nên không đánh gãy chân Ngài.

34Nhưng một người lính lấy giáo đâm xuyên sườn Chúa, lập tức máu và nước đổ ra.

36Mọi việc diễn ra đúng theo lời Thánh Kinh đã nói: “Không một cái xương nào của Ngài bị gãy,”

37và “Họ sẽ nhìn thấy Người họ đã đâm.”

Chôn Chúa Giê-xu

38Sau đó, Giô-sép, người A-ri-ma-thê, từng làm môn đệ Chúa cách kín đáo (vì ông sợ các lãnh đạo Do Thái), đến xin phép Phi-lát cho nhận thi hài Chúa Giê-xu. Được Phi-lát phép, Giô-sép gỡ thi hài Chúa xuống.

39Ni-cô-đem là người đã hầu chuyện với Chúa ban đêm cũng đem 32,7 kýnhựa thơm trầm hương đến.

40Hai ông dùng hương liệu và vải gai mịn tẩm liệm thi hài Chúa, theo tục lệ Do Thái.

41Tại chỗ Chúa đóng đinh, có một khu vườn và một ngôi mộ chưa dùng.

42Vì đó là ngày chuẩn bị cho lễ Vượt Qua của người Do Thái và ngôi mộ này cũng gần, nên họ an táng Chúa Giê-xu tại đó.
