John

1When Jesus had spoken these words, he went forth with his disciples over the brook Cedron, where was a garden, into the which he entered, and his disciples.

2And Judas also, which betrayed him, knew the place: for Jesus ofttimes resorted thither with his disciples.

3Judas then, having received a band of men and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees, cometh thither with lanterns and torches and weapons.

4Jesus therefore, knowing all things that should come upon him, went forth, and said unto them,Whom seek ye?

5They answered him, Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus saith unto them,I am he.And Judas also, which betrayed him, stood with them.

6As soon then as he had said unto them, I am he, they went backward, and fell to the ground.

7Then asked he them again,Whom seek ye?And they said, Jesus of Nazareth.

8Jesus answered,I have told you that I am he: if therefore ye seek me, let these go their way:

9That the saying might be fulfilled, which he spake, Of them which thou gavest me have I lost none.

10Then Simon Peter having a sword drew it, and smote the high priest’s servant, and cut off his right ear. The servant’s name was Malchus.

11Then said Jesus unto Peter,Put up thy sword into the sheath: the cup which my Father hath given me, shall I not drink it?

12Then the band and the captain and officers of the Jews took Jesus, and bound him,

13And led him away to Annas first; for he was father in law to Caiaphas, which was the high priest that same year.

14Now Caiaphas was he, which gave counsel to the Jews, that it was expedient that one man should die for the people.

15¶ And Simon Peter followed Jesus, and so did another disciple: that disciple was known unto the high priest, and went in with Jesus into the palace of the high priest.

16But Peter stood at the door without. Then went out that other disciple, which was known unto the high priest, and spake unto her that kept the door, and brought in Peter.

17Then saith the damsel that kept the door unto Peter, Art not thou also one of this man’s disciples? He saith, I am not.

18And the servants and officers stood there, who had made a fire of coals; for it was cold: and they warmed themselves: and Peter stood with them, and warmed himself.

19¶ The high priest then asked Jesus of his disciples, and of his doctrine.

20Jesus answered him,I spake openly to the world; I ever taught in the synagogue, and in the temple, whither the Jews always resort; and in secret have I said nothing.

21Why askest thou me? ask them which heard me, what I have said unto them: behold, they know what I said.

22And when he had thus spoken, one of the officers which stood by struck Jesus with the palm of his hand, saying, Answerest thou the high priest so?

23Jesus answered him,If I have spoken evil, bear witness of the evil: but if well, why smitest thou me?

24Now Annas had sent him bound unto Caiaphas the high priest.

25And Simon Peter stood and warmed himself. They said therefore unto him, Art not thou also one of his disciples? He denied it, and said, I am not.

26One of the servants of the high priest, being his kinsman whose ear Peter cut off, saith, Did not I see thee in the garden with him?

27Peter then denied again: and immediately the cock crew.

28¶ Then led they Jesus from Caiaphas unto the hall of judgment: and it was early; and they themselves went not into the judgment hall, lest they should be defiled; but that they might eat the passover.

29Pilate then went out unto them, and said, What accusation bring ye against this man?

30They answered and said unto him, If he were not a malefactor, we would not have delivered him up unto thee.

31Then said Pilate unto them, Take ye him, and judge him according to your law. The Jews therefore said unto him, It is not lawful for us to put any man to death:

32That the saying of Jesus might be fulfilled, which he spake, signifying what death he should die.

33Then Pilate entered into the judgment hall again, and called Jesus, and said unto him, Art thou the King of the Jews?

34Jesus answered him,Sayest thou this thing of thyself, or did others tell it thee of me?

35Pilate answered, Am I a Jew? Thine own nation and the chief priests have delivered thee unto me: what hast thou done?

36Jesus answered,My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence.

37Pilate therefore said unto him, Art thou a king then? Jesus answered,Thou sayest that I am a king. To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice.

38Pilate saith unto him, What is truth? And when he had said this, he went out again unto the Jews, and saith unto them, I find in him no fault at all.

39But ye have a custom, that I should release unto you one at the passover: will ye therefore that I release unto you the King of the Jews?

40Then cried they all again, saying, Not this man, but Barabbas. Now Barabbas was a robber.

Chúa Giê-xu Bị Phản và Bị Bắt

1Cầu nguyện xong, Chúa Giê-xu dẫn các môn đệ qua thung lũng Kít-rôn, vào khu vườn ô-liu.

2Giu-đa là người phản bội cũng biết rõ vườn ấy, vì Chúa Giê-xu thường đến đây với các môn đệ.

3Giu-đa hướng dẫn một đội tuần cảnh và chức dịch của các thầy trưởng tế và Pha-ri-si, mang theo đèn, đuốc, và vũ khí đến vườn ô-liu.

4Chúa Giê-xu biết rõ mọi việc sắp xảy ra, nên bước tới hỏi: “Các người tìm ai?”

5Họ hùng hổ: “Giê-xu, người Na-xa-rét.” Chúa Giê-xu đáp: “Chính Ta đây!” (Lúc ấy Giu-đa, người phản Chúa, cũng đứng chung với họ).

6Nghe Chúa Giê-xu đáp: “Chính Ta đây,” cả bọn bị dội lại và té xuống đất.

7Chúa lại hỏi: “Các người tìm ai?” Họ đáp: “Giê-xu, người Na-xa-rét.”

8Chúa Giê-xu nhắc lại: “Ta đã nói với các người là chính Ta đây! Nếu các người tìm bắt Ta, hãy để những người này đi tự do!”

9Việc xảy ra đúng như lời Chúa hứa: “Con không để mất một người nào Cha đã giao cho Con.”

10Si-môn Phi-e-rơ rút gươm chém rơi vành tai phải của Man-chu, đầy tớ của thầy thượng tế.

11Nhưng Chúa Giê-xu phán cùng Phi-e-rơ: “Hãy tra gươm vào vỏ! Lẽ nào Ta không uống chén thống khổ mà Cha đã dành cho Ta sao?”

Chúa Giê-xu Trước Tòa Thầy Thượng Tế

12Lập tức, viên chỉ huy đội tuần cảnh và các chức dịch bắt trói Chúa Giê-xu.

13Trước hết, họ giải Chúa đến dinh An-ne, cha vợ của Cai-phe. Cai-phe đang giữ chức thượng tế.

14Cai-phe đã có lần tuyên bố với các lãnh đạo Do Thái: “Thà một người chết thay cho dân tộc là hơn.”

Phi-e-rơ Chối Chúa Lần Thứ Nhất

15Theo sau Chúa Giê-xu, có Si-môn Phi-e-rơ và một môn đệ khác. Nhờ quen biết thầy thượng tế, môn đệ ấy được vào dinh với Chúa.

16Còn Phi-e-rơ đứng ngoài cổng. Vì môn đệ ấy quen biết thầy thượng tế trở ra xin cô gái gác cổng cho Phi-e-rơ vào.

17Cô hỏi Phi-e-rơ: “Anh không phải là môn đệ ông ấy sao?” Phi-e-rơ đáp: “Không, không phải tôi.”

18Đêm càng lạnh, các chức dịch và các đầy tớ của những thầy tế lễ nhóm một đám lửa rồi quây quần ngồi sưởi. Phi-e-rơ cũng đứng sưởi với họ.

Thầy Thượng Tế Tra Hỏi Chúa Giê-xu

19Thầy thượng tế hỏi Chúa Giê-xu về các môn đệ và lời giáo huấn của Ngài.

20Chúa Giê-xu đáp: “Ai cũng biết Ta giảng dạy điều gì. Ta thường giảng dạy trong các hội trường và Đền Thờ, nơi mọi người thường tập họp lại. Ta chẳng có điều gì giấu diếm.

21Tại sao các người hỏi Ta, mà không hỏi những người đã nghe Ta? Họ biết rõ những điều Ta nói.”

22Một trong những lính tuần cảnh Đền Thờ đứng gần tát vào mặt Chúa Giê-xu, quát lên: “Ngươi dám nói năng như thế với thầy thượng tế sao?”

23Chúa Giê-xu đáp: “Nếu Ta nói sai, xin anh cho biết chỗ sai. Còn Ta nói đúng, tại sao anh đánh Ta?”

24An-ne ra lệnh giải Chúa Giê-xu, vẫn đang bị trói, qua dinh thầy thượng tế Cai-phe.

Phi-e-rơ Chối Chúa Lần Thứ Hai và Thứ Ba

25Lúc ấy Si-môn Phi-e-rơ vẫn đứng sưởi ngoài sân, các anh tuần cảnh đứng bên cạnh hỏi: “Anh không phải môn đệ ông ấy sao?” Ông chối: “Không, không phải tôi.”

26Nhưng một đầy tớ trong nhà thầy thượng tế, là bà con với người bị Phi-e-rơ chém đứt tai, hỏi: “Chính mắt tôi thấy anh đứng trong vườn ô-liu với ông ấy mà!”

27Phi-e-rơ lại chối lần nữa. Lập tức có tiếng gà gáy.

Chúa Giê-xu Trước Tòa Phi-lát

28Cuộc xét xử Chúa Giê-xu trước Cai-phe kết thúc lúc trời vừa sáng. Rồi Ngài bị giải đến dinh tổng trấn La Mã. Những người buộc tội Ngài không dám vào dinh vì sợ bị ô uế, họ sợ không được dự lễ Vượt Qua.

29Vì thế Tổng trấn Phi-lát phải ra ngoài và hỏi: “Các anh tố cáo người này về tội gì?”

30Họ đáp: “Nếu hắn không phải là người gian ác, chúng tôi đâu dám giải lên ngài!”

31Phi-lát nói với họ: “Hãy đem ông ấy đi và xử ông ấy theo luật các anh!” Các lãnh đạo Do Thái đáp: “Chúng tôi không có phép xử tử ai, yêu cầu tổng trấn xử nó!”

32(Điều này ứng nghiệm lời Chúa Giê-xu báo trước Ngài phải chết cách nào.)

33Rồi Phi-lát trở vào dinh hỏi Chúa Giê-xu: “Ngươi có phải là vua người Do Thái không?”

34Chúa Giê-xu hỏi lại: “Đây là câu hỏi của ông hay của người khác nói với ông về Ta?”

35Phi-lát xẵng giọng: “Ta là người Do Thái sao? Chính người dân của anh và các thầy trưởng tế của họ bắt anh giải lên cho ta xử. Anh làm gì mà họ muốn giết anh?”

36Chúa Giê-xu đáp: “Vương Quốc của Ta không phải là vương quốc trên đất. Nếu thế, các môn đệ của Ta đã chiến đấu để bảo vệ Ta không cho người Do Thái bắt. Nhưng Vương Quốc của Ta không thuộc thế giới này.”

37Phi-lát hỏi: “Thế anh là vua sao?” Chúa Giê-xu đáp: “Ông nói Ta là vua. Thật, Ta sinh ra và xuống trần gian để làm chứng về chân lý. Những ai yêu chuộng chân lý đều nhận ra điều Ta phán là thật.”

38Phi-lát thắc mắc: “Chân lý là gì?” Ông bước ra ngoài tuyên bố: “Ta không thấy người này có tội gì cả.

39Nhưng theo thông lệ, mỗi năm đến lễ Vượt Qua, ta ân xá cho các anh một phạm nhân. Các anh muốn ta tha ‘Vua của người Do Thái’ không?”

40Nhưng họ thét lên: “Không! Không phải người này. Chúng tôi muốn ông tha Ba-ra-ba!” (Ba-ra-ba bị tù vì nổi loạn và giết người.)
