Genesis

1In the meantime God said to Jacob: Arise, and go up to Bethel, and dwell there, and make there an altar to God, who appeared to thee when thou didst flee from Esau thy brother.

2And Jacob having called together all his household, said: Cast away the strange gods that are among you, and be cleansed and change your garments.

3Arise, and let us go up to Bethel, that we may make there an altar to God: who heard me in the day of my affliction, and accompanied me in my journey.

4So they gave him all the strange gods they had, and the earrings which were in their ears: and he buried them under the turpentine tree, that is behind the city of Sichem.

5And when they were departed, the terror of God fell upon all the cities round about, and they durst not pursue after them as they went away.

6And Jacob came to Luza, which is in the land of Chanaan, surnamed Bethel: he and all the people that were with him.

7And he built there an altar, and called the name of that place, The house of God: for there God appeared to him when he fled from his brother.

8At the same time Debora the nurse of Rebecca died, and was buried at the foot of Bethel under an oak: and the name of that place was called, The oak of weeping.

9And God appeared again to Jacob, after he returned from Mesopotamia of Syria, and he blessed him,

10Saying: Thou shalt not be called any more Jacob, but Israel shall be thy name. And he called him Israel.

11And said to him: I am God Almighty, increase thou and be multiplied. Nations and peoples of nations shall be from thee, and kings shall come out of thy loins.

12And the land which I gave to Abraham and Isaac, I will give to thee, and to thy seed after thee.

13And he departed from him.

14But he set up a monument of stone, in the place where God had spoken to him: pouring drink offerings upon it, and pouring oil thereon:

15And calling the name of that place Bethel.

16And going forth from thence, he came in the springtime to the land which leadeth to Ephrata: wherein when Rachel was in travail,

17By reason of her hard labour she began to be in danger, and the midwife said to her: Fear not, for thou shalt have this son also.

18And when her soul was departing for pain, and death was now at hand, she called the name of her son Benoni, that is, The son of my pain: but his father called him Benjamin, that is, The son of the right hand.

19So Rachel died, and was buried in the highway that leadeth to Ephrata, this is Bethlehem.

20And Jacob erected a pillar over her sepulchre: this is the pillar of Rachel’s monument, to this day.

21Departing thence, he pitched his tent beyond the Flock tower.

22And when he dwelt in that country, Ruben went, and slept with Bala, the concubine of his father: which he was not ignorant of. Now the sons of Jacob were twelve.

23The sons of Lia: Ruben the first born, and Simeon, and Levi, and Juda, and Issachar, and Zabulon.

24The sons of Rachel: Joseph and Benjamin.

25The sons of Bala, Rachel’s handmaid: Dan and Nephtali.

26The sons of Zelpha, Lia’s handmaid: Gad and Aser: these are the sons of Jacob, that were born to him in Mesopotamia of Syria.

27And he came to Isaac his father in Mambre, the city of Arbee, this is Hebron: wherein Abraham and Isaac sojourned.

28And the days of Isaac were a hundred and eighty years.

29And being spent with age he died, and was gathered to his people, being old and full of days: and his sons Esau and Jacob buried him.

1Thiên Chúa phán bảo ông Gia-cóp : “Đứng dậy ! Hãy lên Bết Ên và ở đó. Hãy làm ở đó một bàn thờ để kính Thiên Chúa, Đấng đã hiện ra với ngươi khi ngươi đang trốn Ê-xau, anh ngươi.”

2Ông Gia-cóp bảo gia đình ông và tất cả những người cùng đi với ông : “Hãy loại bỏ các thần ngoại bang ở giữa các người, hãy tẩy uế mình và thay áo.

3Nào ta hãy đứng dậy và lên Bết Ên ! Tại đó tôi sẽ làm một bàn thờ để kính Thiên Chúa, Đấng đã đáp lời tôi ngày tôi gặp bước gian truân, và đã ở với tôi trong chuyến đi tôi đã thực hiện.”

4Họ nộp cho ông Gia-cóp hết các thần ngoại bang họ đang giữ và các khuyên họ đeo ở tai, và ông Gia-cóp chôn những thứ ấy dưới gốc cây vân hương ở gần Si-khem.

5Họ lên đường, và Thiên Chúa gieo kinh hãi xuống các thành chung quanh, khiến người ta không đuổi theo con cái ông Gia-cóp.

6Ông Gia-cóp đến Lút, tức là Bết Ên, trong đất Ca-na-an, ông và những người cùng đi với ông.

7Tại đây, ông dựng một bàn thờ và đặt tên cho nơi ấy là Ên Bết Ên, vì tại đây thần linh đã tỏ mình ra cho ông, đang khi ông trốn anh.

8Bấy giờ bà Đơ-vô-ra, vú nuôi bà Rê-bê-ca, qua đời và được chôn ở phía dưới Bết Ên, dưới gốc cây sồi, và ông Gia-cóp đặt tên cho cây ấy là Cây Sồi Than Khóc.

9Thiên Chúa lại hiện ra với ông Gia-cóp khi ông từ Pát-đan A-ram về, và Người chúc phúc cho ông.

10Thiên Chúa phán với ông : “Tên ngươi là Gia-cóp, nhưng người ta sẽ không gọi ngươi là Gia-cóp nữa, mà tên ngươi sẽ là Ít-ra-en.” Và Người đặt tên cho ông là Ít-ra-en.

11Thiên Chúa phán với ông : “Ta là Thiên Chúa toàn năng. Ngươi hãy sinh sôi nảy nở thật nhiều. Một dân tộc và một cộng đồng nhiều dân tộc sẽ từ ngươi mà ra, và vua chúa sẽ phát xuất từ lòng ngươi.

12Đất Ta đã ban cho Áp-ra-ham và I-xa-ác, thì Ta sẽ ban cho ngươi ; Ta sẽ ban đất ấy cho dòng dõi ngươi sau này.”

13Rồi Thiên Chúa từ giã ông mà đi lên, từ chỗ Người đã phán với ông.

14Ông Gia-cóp dựng một cái trụ tại chỗ Thiên Chúa đã phán với ông, một trụ đá ; ông rưới rượu và đổ dầu lên đó.

15Ông Gia-cóp đặt tên cho nơi Thiên Chúa đã phán với ông là Bết Ên.

16Cả đoàn rời Bết Ên lên đường. Khi họ còn cách Ép-ra-tha một quãng đường, thì bà Ra-khen đến ngày sinh, nhưng lại gặp khó khăn.

17Trong lúc bà khó sinh, cô đỡ nói với bà : “Bà đừng sợ, bà lại được một con trai nữa !”

18Khi bà thở hắt ra, vì đang hấp hối, thì đặt tên cho con là Ben Ô-ni, nhưng cha nó lại đặt tên là Ben-gia-min.

19Bà Ra-khen qua đời và được chôn trên con đường đi Ép-ra-tha, tức là Bê-lem.

20Ông Gia-cóp dựng một bia đá trên mộ bà, đó là bia mộ bà Ra-khen, vẫn còn cho đến ngày nay.

21Ông Ít-ra-en lên đường và cắm lều ở xa hơn Mích-đan Ê-đe.

22Ông Gia-cóp có mười hai người con trai.

23Con trai bà Lê-a : Rưu-vên, con đầu lòng của ông Gia-cóp, rồi đến Si-mê-ôn, Lê-vi, Giu-đa, Ít-xa-kha và Dơ-vu-lun.

24Con trai bà Ra-khen : Giu-se và Ben-gia-min.

25Con trai bà Bin-ha, nữ tỳ của bà Ra-khen : Đan và Náp-ta-li.

26Con trai bà Din-pa, nữ tỳ của bà Lê-a : Gát và A-se. Đó là những con trai ông Gia-cóp sinh được tại Pát-đan A-ram.

27Ông Gia-cóp về với ông I-xa-ác, cha ông, ở Mam-rê, tại Kia-giát Ác-ba, tức là Khép-rôn, nơi ông Áp-ra-ham và ông I-xa-ác đã từng trú ngụ.

28Ông I-xa-ác sống được một trăm tám mươi năm.

29Rồi ông I-xa-ác tắt thở. Ông qua đời và được về sum họp với gia tiên, khi đã cao niên và no đầy tuổi tác. Các con ông là Ê-xau và Gia-cóp chôn cất ông.
