David’s Military Census

1Again the anger of the LORD burned against Israel, and He stirred up David against them, saying, “Go and take a census of Israel and Judah.”

2So the king said to Joab the commander of his army, who was with him,“Go now throughout the tribes of Israel from Dan to Beersheba and register the troops, so that I may know their number.”

3But Joab replied to the king, “May the LORD your God multiply the troops a hundred times over, and may the eyes of my lord the king see it. But why does my lord the king want to do such a thing?”

4Nevertheless, the king’s word prevailed against Joab and against the commanders of the army. So Joab and the commanders of the army departed from the presence of the king to register the troops of Israel.

5They crossed the Jordan and camped near Aroer, south of the town in the middle of the valley, and proceeded toward Gad and Jazer.

6Then they went to Gilead and the land of Tahtim-hodshi,and on to Dan-jaan and around to Sidon.

7They went toward the fortress of Tyre and all the cities of the Hivites and Canaanites. Finally, they went on to the Negev of Judah,to Beersheba.

8At the end of nine months and twenty days, having gone through the whole land, they returned to Jerusalem.

9And Joab reported to the king the total number of the troops. In Israel there were 800,000 men of valor who drew the sword, and in Judah there were 500,000.

Judgment for David’s Sin

10After David had numbered the troops, his conscience was stricken and he said to the LORD, “I have sinned greatly in what I have done. Now, O LORD, I beg You to take away the iniquity of Your servant, for I have acted very foolishly.”

11When David got up in the morning, the word of the LORD had come to Gad the prophet, David’s seer:

12“Go and tell David that this is what the LORD says: ‘I am offering you three options. Choose one of them, and I will carry it out against you.’”

13So Gad went and said to David, “Do you choose to endure threeyears of famine in your land, three months of fleeing the pursuit of your enemies, or three days of plague upon your land? Now then, think it over and decide how I should reply to Him who sent me.”

14David answered Gad, “I am deeply distressed. Please, let us fall into the hand of the LORD, for His mercies are great; but do not let me fall into the hands of men.”

A Plague on Israel

15So the LORD sent a plague upon Israel from that morning until the appointed time, and seventy thousand of the people from Dan to Beersheba died.

16But when the angel stretched out his hand to destroy Jerusalem, the LORD relented from the calamity and said to the angel who was destroying the people, “Enough! Withdraw your hand now!” At that time the angel of the LORD was by the threshing floor of Araunahthe Jebusite.

17When David saw the angel striking down the people, he said to the LORD, “Surely I, the shepherd,have sinned and acted wickedly. But these sheep, what have they done? Please, let Your hand fall upon me and my father’s house.”

David Builds an Altar

18And that day Gad came to David and said to him, “Go up and build an altar to the LORD on the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite.”

19So David went up at the word of Gad, just as the LORD had commanded.

20When Araunah looked out and saw the king and his servants coming toward him, he went out and bowed facedown before the king.

21“Why has my lord the king come to his servant?” Araunah said. “To buy your threshing floor,” David replied, “that I may build an altar to the LORD, so that the plague upon the people may be halted.”

22Araunah said to David, “May my lord the king take whatever seems good to him and offer it up. Here are the oxen for a burnt offering and the threshing sledges and ox yokes for the wood.

23O king, Araunah gives all these to the king.” He also said to the king, “May the LORD your God accept you.”

24“No,” replied the king, “I insist on paying a price, for I will not offer to the LORD my God burnt offerings that cost me nothing.” So David bought the threshing floor and the oxen for fifty shekels of silver.

25And there he built an altar to the LORD and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings. Then the LORD answered the prayers on behalf of the land, and the plague upon Israel was halted.

1Cơn thạnh nộ của Đức Giê-hô-va lại nổi phừng cùng dân Y-sơ-ra-ên. Ngài giục lòng Đa-vít nghịch cùng chúng mà rằng: Hãy đi tu bộ dân Y-sơ-ra-ên và Giu-đa.

2Vua bèn nói với Giô-áp, là quan tổng binh ở gần người, mà rằng: Hãy đi khắp các chi phái Y-sơ-ra-ên, từ Đan cho đến Bê-e-Sê-ba, tu bộ dân sự, để cho ta biết số dân Y-sơ-ra-ên là bao nhiêu.

3Giô-áp đáp cùng vua rằng: Nguyện Giê-hô-va Đức Chúa Trời của vua làm cho dân sự vua ngày nay được còn thêm gấp bằng trăm, và nguyện mắt vua chúa tôi thấy sự gia thêm ấy! Nhưng cớ sao vua chúa tôi vui lòng về một việc như vậy?

4Dầu vậy mặc lòng, lời của vua mạnh hơn sự chống trả của Giô-áp và các quan tướng. Vậy, Giô-áp và các quan tướng ở trước mặt vua, đều đi ra đặng tu bộ dân Y-sơ-ra-ên.

5Sau khi qua sông Giô-đanh rồi, chúng hạ trại tại A-rô-e, về phía hữu thành ở giữa trũng Gát; rồi hại trại tại Gia-ê-xe.

6Từ đó họ đi vào trong xứ Ga-la-át, về hướng xứ thấp của Hốt-si. Kế đó, họ đến Đan-Gia-an và miền chung quanh Si-đôn.

7Họ cũng đi đến thành lũy xứ Ty-rơ, vào các thành dân Hê-vít và dân Ca-na-an, rồi họ giáp đến Bê-e-Sê-ba tại miền nam Giu-đa.

8Như vậy, họ đi khắp xứ và trở về Giê-ru-sa-lem trong chín tháng và hai mươi ngày.

9Giô-áp bèn trao cho vua cái sổ trọn sự tu bộ dân sự: trong Y-sơ-ra-ên có tám trăm ngàn người lính chiến, có tài cầm gươm được, và trong Giu-đa năm trăm ngàn người.

10Sau khi tu bộ dân sự rồi, Đa-vít bị lương tâm cắn rứt, bèn cầu Đức Giê-hô-va rằng: Tôi làm như vậy, thật là đã phạm tội rất nặng. Vậy, bây giờ Đức Giê-hô-va ôi! xin hãy cất tội lỗi của kẻ tôi tớ Ngài đã phạm; vì tôi có làm cách ngu dại quá.

11Sáng ngày mai, khi Đa-vít dậy, có lời của Đức Giê-hô-va phán cùng tiên tri Gát, là người tiên kiến của Đa-vít, rằng:

12Hãy đi nói với Đa-vít: Đức Giê-hô-va phán như vầy: Ta có ba điều định cho ngươi; trong ba điều đó, hãy chọn một, rồi ta sẽ lấy nó mà phạt ngươi.

13Gát đi đến cùng Đa-vít, thuật các lời đó cho người, mà rằng: Vua muốn chọn điều nào? hoặc bảy năm đói kém trong nước vua, hoặc trong ba tháng vua phải chạy trốn khỏi trước mặt kẻ thù nghịch đuổi theo vua, hoặc ba ngày dịch hạch trong nước vua? Bây giờ, hãy suy nghĩ và xem điều tôi phải thưa lại cùng Đấng đã sai tôi.

14Đa-vít bèn đáp cùng Gát rằng: Sự khốn khổ tôi lớn thay! Thế thì, nguyện tôi sa vào tay của Đức Giê-hô-va, vì những sự thương xót của Ngài là lớn lắm; nhưng chớ cho tôi sa vào tay của loài người ta.

15Vậy, Đức Giê-hô-va khiến dịch hạch phá hại trong dân Y-sơ-ra-ên, từ buổi sớm mai cho đến thì giờ Ngài đã nhất định. Trong dân sự, từ Đan đến Bê-e-Sê-ba, chết bảy vạn người.

16Thiên sứ giơ tay ra trên Giê-ru-sa-lem đặng hại nó; song Đức Giê-hô-va hối hận về tai họa ấy, bèn phán cùng thiên sứ hành hại dân sự rằng: Thôi! bây giờ hãy rút tay ngươi lại. Bấy giờ, thiên sứ của Đức Giê-hô-va ở gần sân đạp lúa của A-rau-na, người Giê-bu-sít.

17Đa-vít thấy thiên sứ hành hại dân sự, bèn thưa với Đức Giê-hô-va như vầy: Aáy chính tôi đã phạm tội, tôi là kẻ có tội; còn các con chiên kia có làm chi? Nguyện tay Chúa chỉ hành hại tôi và nhà cha tôi.

18Ngày đó, Gát đến tìm Đa-vít, và nói rằng: Hãy đi lên, lập một bàn thờ cho Đức Giê-hô-va tại nơi sân đạp lúa của A-rau-na, người Giê-bu-sít.

19Vậy, Đa-vít theo lời của Gát, đi lên y như Đức Giê-hô-va đã phán dặn người.

20A-rau-na ngước mắt lên, thấy vua và các tôi tớ người đi tới trước mặt mình, liền đi ra và sấp mình xuống đất trước mặt vua.

21Đoạn, A-rau-na nói: Cớ chi vua chúa tôi đến nhà kẻ tôi tớ vua? Đa-vít đáp: Aáy đặng mua sân đạp lúa ngươi, và xây tại đó một cái bàn thờ cho Đức Giê-hô-va, để ngừng tai họa hành hại dân sự.

22A-rau-na tâu với Đa-vít rằng: Xin vua chúa tôi hãy dâng làm của lễ điều gì vua lấy làm tốt lành: Nầy những bò dùng làm của lễ thiêu; cộ và ách bò dùng làm củi để đốt của tế lễ.

23Oâi vua! mọi điều đó A-rau-na xin dâng cho vua. A-rau-na tiếp: Nguyện Giê-hô-va Đức Chúa Trời của vua tiếp nhận vua!

24Vua đáp cùng A-rau-na rằng: không không được; ta muốn mua hết của ngươi, cứ theo giá bạc. Ta không muốn dâng cho Giê-hô-va Đức Chúa Trời ta những của lễ thiêu không đáng giá chi. Vậy, Đa-vít mua sân đạp lúa và bò giá năm mươi siếc-lơ bạc.

25Người lập tại đó một bàn thờ cho Đức Giê-hô-va, và dâng của lễ thiêu cùng của lễ thù ân. Thế thì, Đức Giê-hô-va động lòng thương Y-sơ-ra-ên, và tai họa trong xứ bèn ngừng lại.
