Luke

1Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Cæsar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judæa, and Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of the region of Ituræa and Trachonitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene,

2in the high-priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came unto John the son of Zacharias in the wilderness.

3And he came into all the region round about the Jordan, preaching the baptism of repentance unto remission of sins;

4as it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet,The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Make ye ready the way of the Lord, Make his paths straight.

5Every valley shall be filled, And every mountain and hill shall be brought low; And the crooked shall become straight, And the rough ways smooth;

6And all flesh shall see the salvation of God.

7He said therefore to the multitudes that went out to be baptized of him, Ye offspring of vipers, who warned you to flee from the wrath to come?

8Bring forth therefore fruits worthy of repentance, and begin not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.

9And even now the axe also lieth at the root of the trees: every tree therefore that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.

10And the multitudes asked him, saying, What then must we do?

11And he answered and said unto them, He that hath two coats, let him impart to him that hath none; and he that hath food, let him do likewise.

12And there came also publicans to be baptized, and they said unto him, Teacher, what must we do?

13And he said unto them, Extort no more than that which is appointed you.

14And soldiers also asked him, saying, And we, what must we do? And he said unto them, Extort from no man by violence, neither accuse any one wrongfully; and be content with your wages.

15And as the people were in expectation, and all men reasoned in their hearts concerning John, whether haply he were the Christ;

16John answered, saying unto them all, I indeed baptize you with water; but there cometh he that is mightier than I, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose: he shall baptize you in the Holy Spirit and in fire:

17whose fan is in his hand, thoroughly to cleanse his threshing-floor, and to gather the wheat into his garner; but the chaff he will burn up with unquenchable fire.

18With many other exhortations therefore preached he good tidings unto the people;

19but Herod the tetrarch, being reproved by him for Herodias his brother’s wife, and for all the evil things which Herod had done,

20added this also to them all, that he shut up John in prison.

21Now it came to pass, when all the people were baptized, that, Jesus also having been baptized, and praying, the heaven was opened,

22and the Holy Spirit descended in a bodily form, as a dove, upon him, and a voice came out of heaven, Thou art my beloved Son; in thee I am well pleased.

23And Jesus himself, when he began to teach, was about thirty years of age, being the son (as was supposed) of Joseph, the son of Heli,

24the son of Matthat, the son of Levi, the son of Melchi, the son of Jannai, the son of Joseph,

25the son of Mattathias, the son of Amos, the son of Nahum, the son of Esli, the son of Naggai,

26the son of Maath, the son of Mattathias, the son of Semein, the son of Josech, the son of Joda,

27the son of Joanan, the son of Rhesa, the son of Zerubbabel, the son of Shealtiel, the son of Neri,

28the son of Melchi, the son of Addi, the son of Cosam, the son of Elmadam, the son of Er,

29the son of Jesus, the son of Eliezer, the son of Jorim, the son of Matthat, the son of Levi,

30the son of Symeon, the son of Judas, the son of Joseph, the son of Jonam, the son of Eliakim,

31the son of Melea, the son of Menna, the son of Mattatha, the son of Nathan, the son of David,

32the son of Jesse, the son of Obed, the son of Boaz, the son of Salmon, the son of Nahshon,

33the son of Amminadab, the son of Arni, the son of Hezron, the son of Perez, the son of Judah,

34the son of Jacob, the son of Isaac, the son of Abraham, the son of Terah, the son of Nahor,

35the son of Serug, the son of Reu, the son of Peleg, the son of Eber, the son of Shelah,

36the son of Cainan, the son of Arphaxad, the son of Shem, the son of Noah, the son of Lamech,

37the son of Methuselah, the son of Enoch, the son of Jared, the son of Mahalaleel, the son of Cainan,

38the son of Enos, the son of Seth, the son of Adam, the son of God.

1Năm thứ mười lăm dưới triều hoàng đế Ti-bê-ri-ô, thời Phong-xi-ô Phi-la-tô làm tổng trấn miền Giu-đê, Hê-rô-đê làm tiểu vương miền Ga-li-lê, người anh là Phi-líp-phê làm tiểu vương miền I-tu-rê và Tra-khô-nít, Ly-xa-ni-a làm tiểu vương miền A-bi-lên,

2Kha-nan và Cai-pha làm thượng tế, có lời Thiên Chúa phán cùng con ông Da-ca-ri-a là ông Gio-an trong hoang địa.

3Ông liền đi khắp vùng ven sông Gio-đan, rao giảng, kêu gọi người ta chịu phép rửa tỏ lòng sám hối để được ơn tha tội,

4như có lời chép trong sách ngôn sứ I-sai-a rằng : *Có tiếng người hô trong hoang địa : hãy dọn sẵn con đường cho Đức Chúa, sửa lối cho thẳng để Người đi.*

5*Mọi thung lũng, phải lấp cho đầy, mọi núi đồi, phải bạt cho thấp, khúc quanh co, phải uốn cho ngay, đường lồi lõm, phải san cho phẳng.*

6*Rồi hết mọi người phàm sẽ thấy ơn cứu độ của Thiên Chúa*.

7Đám đông lũ lượt kéo đến xin ông Gio-an làm phép rửa ; ông nói với họ : “Nòi rắn độc kia, ai đã chỉ cho các anh cách trốn cơn thịnh nộ của Thiên Chúa sắp giáng xuống vậy ?

8Các anh hãy sinh những hoa quả xứng với lòng sám hối. Và đừng vội nghĩ bụng rằng : Chúng ta đã có tổ phụ Áp-ra-ham ; vì, tôi nói cho các anh hay, Thiên Chúa có thể làm cho những hòn đá này trở nên con cháu ông Áp-ra-ham.

9Cái rìu đã đặt sát gốc cây : bất cứ cây nào không sinh quả tốt đều bị chặt đi và quăng vào lửa.”

10Đám đông hỏi ông rằng : “Chúng tôi phải làm gì đây ?”

11Ông trả lời : “Ai có hai áo, thì chia cho người không có ; ai có gì ăn, thì cũng làm như vậy.”

12Cũng có những người thu thuế đến chịu phép rửa. Họ hỏi ông : “Thưa thầy, chúng tôi phải làm gì ?”

13Ông bảo họ : “Đừng đòi hỏi gì quá mức đã ấn định cho các anh.”

14Binh lính cũng hỏi ông : “Còn anh em chúng tôi thì phải làm gì ?” Ông bảo họ : “Chớ hà hiếp ai, cũng đừng tống tiền người ta, hãy an phận với số lương của mình.”

15Hồi đó, dân đang trông ngóng, và trong thâm tâm, ai nấy đều tự hỏi : biết đâu ông Gio-an lại chẳng là Đấng Mê-si-a !

16Ông Gio-an trả lời mọi người rằng : “Tôi, tôi làm phép rửa cho anh em trong nước, nhưng có Đấng mạnh thế hơn tôi đang đến, tôi không đáng cởi quai dép cho Người. Người sẽ làm phép rửa cho anh em trong Thánh Thần và lửa.

17Tay Người cầm nia rê sạch lúa trong sân : thóc mẩy thì thu vào kho lẫm, còn thóc lép thì bỏ vào lửa không hề tắt mà đốt đi.”

18Ngoài ra, ông còn khuyên dân nhiều điều khác nữa, mà loan báo Tin Mừng cho họ.

19Còn tiểu vương Hê-rô-đê thì bị ông Gio-an khiển trách vì đã lấy bà Hê-rô-đi-a là vợ của người anh, và vì tất cả các tội ác tiểu vương đã phạm.

20Ngoài ra, tiểu vương còn phạm thêm tội này là bỏ tù ông Gio-an.

21Khi toàn dân đã chịu phép rửa, Đức Giê-su cũng chịu phép rửa, và đang khi Người cầu nguyện, thì trời mở ra,

22và Thánh Thần ngự xuống trên Người dưới hình dáng chim bồ câu. Lại có tiếng từ trời phán rằng : *Con là Con của Cha ; ngày hôm nay, Cha đã sinh ra Con*.

23Khi Đức Giê-su khởi sự rao giảng, Người trạc ba mươi tuổi. Thiên hạ vẫn coi Người là con ông Giu-se. Giu-se là con Ê-li,

24Ê-li con Mát-tát, Mát-tát con Lê-vi, Lê-vi con Man-ki, Man-ki con Gian-nai, Gian-nai con Giô-xếp.

25Giô-xếp con Mát-tít-gia, Mát-tít-gia con A-mốt, A-mốt con Na-khum, Na-khum con Khét-li, Khét-li con Nác-gai.

26Nác-gai con Ma-khát, Ma-khát con Mát-tít-gia, Mát-tít-gia con Sim-y, Sim-y con Giô-xếch, Giô-xếch con Giô-đa.

27San-ti-ên con Nê-ri,

28Nê-ri con Man-ki, Man-ki con Át-đi, Át-đi con Cô-xam, Cô-xam con En-mơ-đam, En-mơ-đam con E.

29E con Giê-su, Giê-su con Ê-li-e-de, Ê-li-e-de con Giô-rim, Giô-rim con Mát-tát, Mát-tát con Lê-vi.

30Lê-vi con Si-mê-ôn, Si-mê-ôn con Giu-đa, Giu-đa con Giô-xếp, Giô-xếp con Giô-nam, Giô-nam con En-gia-kim,

31En-gia-kim con Ma-li-a, Ma-li-a con Mi-na, Mi-na con Mát-tát-ta, Mát-tát-ta con Na-than, Na-than con Đa-vít.

32Đa-vít con Gie-sê. Gie-sê con Ô-vết, Ô-vết con Bô-át, Bô-át con Xan-môn, Xan-môn con Nác-sôn.

33Nác-sôn con Am-mi-na-đáp, Am-mi-na-đáp con Át-min, Át-min con Ác-ni, Ác-ni con Khét-rôn, Khét-rôn con Pe-rét, Pe-rét con Giu-đa.

34Áp-ra-ham con Te-rác, Te-rác con Na-kho.

35Na-kho con Xơ-rúc, Xơ-rúc con Rơ-u, Rơ-u con Pe-léc, Pe-léc con Ê-ve. Ê-ve con Se-lác.

36Se-lác con Kê-nan, Kê-nan con Ác-pắc-sát, Ác-pắc-sát con Sêm, Sêm con Nô-ê, Nô-ê con La-méc.

37La-méc con Mơ-thu-se-lác. Mơ-thu-se-lác con Kha-nốc, Kha-nốc con Gie-rét, Gie-rét con Ma-ha-lan-ên, Ma-ha-lan-ên con Kê-nan.

38Kê-nan con E-nốt, E-nốt con Sết, Sết con A-đam và A-đam là con Thiên Chúa.
