Nehemiah

1All the people gathered themselves together as one man into the wide place that was in front of the water gate; and they spoke to Ezra the scribe to bring the book of the law of Moses, which the LORD had commanded to Israel.

2Ezra the priest brought the law before the assembly, both men and women, and all who could hear with understanding, on the first day of the seventh month.

3He read from it before the wide place that was in front of the water gate from early morning until midday, in the presence of the men and the women, and of those who could understand. The ears of all the people were attentive to the book of the law.

4Ezra the scribe stood on a pulpit of wood, which they had made for the purpose; and beside him stood Mattithiah, Shema, Anaiah, Uriah, Hilkiah, and Maaseiah, on his right hand; and on his left hand, Pedaiah, Mishael, Malchijah, Hashum, Hashbaddanah, Zechariah, and Meshullam.

5Ezra opened the book in the sight of all the people (for he was above all the people), and when he opened it, all the people stood up.

6Then Ezra blessed the LORD, the great God. All the people answered, “Amen, Amen,” with the lifting up of their hands. They bowed their heads, and worshiped the LORD with their faces to the ground.

7Also Jeshua, Bani, Sherebiah, Jamin, Akkub, Shabbethai, Hodiah, Maaseiah, Kelita, Azariah, Jozabad, Hanan, Pelaiah, and the Levites, caused the people to understand the law; and the people stayed in their place.

8They read in the book, in the law of God, distinctly; and they gave the sense, so that they understood the reading.

9Nehemiah, who was the governor, Ezra the priest and scribe, and the Levites who taught the people said to all the people, “Today is holy to the LORD your God. Don’t mourn, nor weep.” For all the people wept when they heard the words of the law.

10Then he said to them, “Go your way. Eat the fat, drink the sweet, and send portions to him for whom nothing is prepared, for today is holy to our Lord. Don’t be grieved, for the joy of the LORD is your strength.”

11So the Levites calmed all the people, saying, “Hold your peace, for the day is holy. Don’t be grieved.”

12All the people went their way to eat, to drink, to send portions, and to celebrate, because they had understood the words that were declared to them.

13On the second day, the heads of fathers’ households of all the people, the priests, and the Levites were gathered together to Ezra the scribe, to study the words of the law.

14They found written in the law how the LORD had commanded by Moses that the children of Israel should dwell in booths in the feast of the seventh month;

15and that they should publish and proclaim in all their cities and in Jerusalem, saying, “Go out to the mountain, and get olive branches, branches of wild olive, myrtle branches, palm branches, and branches of thick trees, to make temporary shelters,as it is written.”

16So the people went out and brought them, and made themselves temporary shelters,everyone on the roof of his house, in their courts, in the courts of God’s house, in the wide place of the water gate, and in the wide place of Ephraim’s gate.

17All the assembly of those who had come back out of the captivity made temporary sheltersand lived in the temporary shelters, for since the days of Joshua the son of Nun to that day the children of Israel had not done so. There was very great gladness.

18Also day by day, from the first day to the last day, he read in the book of the law of God. They kept the feast seven days; and on the eighth day was a solemn assembly, according to the ordinance.

1Bấy giờ, dân sự đều nhóm hiệp như thể một người, tại phố ở trước cửa Nước. Chúng nói với E-xơ-ra là thầy thông giáo, xin người đem quyển sách luật pháp của Môi-se mà Đức Giê-hô-va đã truyền dạy cho Y-sơ-ra-ên.

2Ngày mồng một tháng bảy, thầy tế lễ E-xơ-ra đem luật pháp đến trước mặt hội chúng, người nam và nữ, cùng những người có thông sáng nghe hiểu được.

3Người đứng tại phố ở trước cửa Nước, đọc trong quyển ấy từ rạng đông cho đến trưa, có mặt các người nam và nữ, cùng những kẻ có thể hiểu được. Cả dân sự lắng tai nghe đọc sách luật pháp.

4Thầy thông giáo E-xơ-ra đứng trên một cái sạp bằng gỗ mà người ta làm nhân dịp ấy; Ma-ti-thia, Sê-ma, A-na-gia, U-ri, Hinh-kia, và Ma-a-xê-gia, đứng gần người ở bên hữu; còn bên tả người thì có Phê-đa-gia, Mi-sa-ên, Manh-ki-gia, Ha-sum, Hách-ba-đa-na, Xa-cha-ri, và Mê-su-lam.

5E-xơ-ra dở sách ra trước mặt cả dân sự, vì người đứng cao hơn chúng; khi người dở sách ra, thì dân sự đều đứng dậy.

6E-xơ-ra ngợi khen Giê-hô-va Đức Chúa Trời cao cả; cả dân sự bèn giơ tay lên, mà đáp lại rằng: A-men, A-men! rồi chúng cúi đầu, sấp mặt xuống đất mà thờ lạy Đức Giê-hô-va.

7Giê-sua, Ba-ni, Sê-rê-bia, Gia-min, A-cúp, Sa-bê-thai, Hô-đi-gia, Ma-a-xê-gia, Kê-li-ta, A-xa-ria, Giô-xa-bát, Ha-nan, Bê-la-gia, và người Lê-vi, đều giải cho dân sự hiểu luật pháp; và dân sự đứng tại chỗ mình.

8Họ đọc rõ ràng trong sách luật pháp của Đức Chúa Trời, rồi giải nghĩa nó ra, làm cho người ta hiểu lời họ đọc.

9Nê-hê-mi, quan tổng trấn, E-xơ-ra, thầy tế lễ và thầy thông giáo, cùng người Lê-vi mà dạy dỗ dân sự, bèn nói với cả Y-sơ-ra-ên rằng: Ngày nay là thánh cho Giê-hô-va Đức Chúa Trời của các ngươi; chớ để tang, cũng đừng khóc lóc. Vì cả dân sự đều khóc khi nghe đọc các lời luật pháp.

10Nê-hê-mi nói với chúng rằng: Hãy đi ăn vật gì béo, uống đồ gì ngọt, và hãy gởi phần cho những người không có sắm sửa gì hết; vì ngày nay là thánh, biệt riêng ra cho Chúa của chúng ta. Chớ buồn thảm, vì sự vui vẻ của Đức Giê-hô-va là sức lực của các ngươi.

11Vậy, người Lê-vi làm cho cả dân sự đều được yên ổn, mà rằng: Khá nín đi, vì ngày nay là thánh, đừng sầu thảm chi.

12Cả dân sự bèn đi đặng ăn và uống, gởi cho những phần, cùng vui vẻ lắm; vì chúng có hiểu các lời người ta đã truyền dạy cho mình.

13Qua ngày thứ hai, các trưởng tộc của cả dân sự, những thầy tế lễ, và người Lê-vi, đều nhóm lại bên E-xơ-ra, là người thông giáo, đặng chú ý nghe các lời của luật pháp.

14Chúng thấy có chép trong luật pháp rằng Đức Giê-hô-va cậy Môi-se phán rằng dân Y-sơ-ra-ên phải ở trong nhà lều đang lúc lễ tháng bảy;

15và chúng phải hô truyền trong các thành và tại Giê-ru-sa-lem nghe, rằng: Hãy đi kiếm trong núi những nhánh ô-li-ve và ô-li-ve rừng, những nhánh cây sim, những tầu lá kè, và những nhánh cây rậm, đặng làm những nhà lều, y như đã chép.

16Dân sự bèn đi ra đem các lá ấy về, mỗi người đều làm nhà lều trên nóc nhà mình, ngoài sân mình, trong hành lang của đền Đức Chúa Trời, nơi phố của cửa Nước, và nơi phố của cửa Eùp-ra-im.

17Cả hội chúng của những kẻ bị bắt làm phu tù được trở về bèn cất những nhà lều, và ở trong đó. Từ đời Giô-suê, con trai của Nun, cho đến ngày ấy, dân Y-sơ-ra-ên chẳng có làm gì giống như vậy. Bèn có sự rất vui mừng.

18Mỗi ngày, từ ngày đầu cho đến ngày chót, người đọc trong sách luật pháp của Đức Chúa Trời. Chúng ăn lễ bảy ngày; còn qua ngày thứ tám, có một lễ trọng thể, tùy theo luật lệ.
