1Thà một miếng bánh khô mà thuận thảo,còn hơn nhà đầy thịt tế lễ mà xung đột.

2Chủ để nô lệ khôn ngoan quản trị đứa con ngỗ nghịchcho nó đồng hưởng gia tài giữa các anh em.

3Lửa dùng thử bạc, thử vàng,Chúa Hằng Hữu thử lòng người.

4Người làm ác thích nghe lời phỉnh dối;người giả trá mê theo lời xảo quyệt.

5Ai chế giễu người nghèo, xúc phạm Đấng Tạo Hóa;ai vui mừng thấy người bị nạn sẽ bị hình phạt.

6Cháu chắt là vương miện của người già;tổ phụ là vinh dự cho con cháu.

7Lời trang nhã không xứng người ngu;bậc lãnh tụ không nói câu xảo trá.

8Của hối lộ như cái bùa trong tay người cầu cạnh;đi đến đâu hắn cũng được thành công!

9Bỏ qua lỗi cho nhau đem lại tình yêu mến,nhắc lại mãi lỗi lầm làm phân rẽ bạn bè.

10Một lời quở trách thức tỉnh người khôn,hơn cả trăm roi đánh người ngu muội.

11Người hung ác chỉ thích nổi loạn,sứ giả bạo tàn sẽ đi dẹp nó.

12Thà đương đầu với gấu cái mất con,còn hơn gặp người dại nổi khùng.

13Người nỡ lấy ác báo thiện,chẳng hề thoát hậu quả khốc hại.

14Tranh chấp khởi đầu như khơi nguồn nước chảy,thà nên dứt lời trước khi cãi lộn.

15Tha cho người có tội và lên án người vô tội—cả hai đều ghê tởm trước mặt Chúa Hằng Hữu.

16Người khờ ôm bạc đi học khôn,lòng không chuyên, bạc cũng vô hiệu.

17Tình thân hữu bền chặt mãi mãi,nghĩa anh em quý lúc khổ nguy.

18Người dại dột bảo lãnh vội vàng,đem ách giữa đàng mang vào cổ.

19Ai ưa tranh cạnh chuốc điều tội ác;phô trương cửa đẹp rước họa vô nhà.

20Lòng xảo trá không hề thành đạt;lưỡi gian ngoa rước lấy họa tai.

21Con khờ khạo làm cha phiền lụy;người ưu sầu, vì con cái khùng điên.

22Niềm vui thỏa như thang thuốc bổ,nỗi thảm sầu phá hoại tủy xương.

23Người tham nhũng nhận hối lộ vụng trộm,làm cán cân công lý lệch nghiêng.

24Người khôn sáng đeo đuổi khôn ngoan,mắt người dại nhìn chân trời góc bể.

25Con khờ dại làm buồn lòng chavà gây đắng cay cho mẹ đã sinh nó.

26Phạt vạ người vô tội và trừng phạt viên chức thanh liêm,cả hai đều không đúng.

27Người khôn ngoan thường ít lời;người thông sáng biết tự chủ.

28Biết im lặng, dại cũng thành khôn;biết kiềm chế miệng lưỡi được xem là sáng suốt.

21He who becomes the father of a fool grieves.The father of a fool has no joy.

22A cheerful heart makes good medicine,but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.

23A wicked man receives a bribe in secret,to pervert the ways of justice.

24Wisdom is before the face of one who has understanding,but the eyes of a fool wander to the ends of the earth.

25A foolish son brings grief to his father,and bitterness to her who bore him.

26Also to punish the righteous is not good,nor to flog officials for their integrity.

27He who spares his words has knowledge.He who is even tempered is a man of understanding.

28Even a fool, when he keeps silent, is counted wise.When he shuts his lips, he is thought to be discerning.
