1Các anh em ngôn sứ nói với ông Ê-li-sa : “Thầy coi, nơi chúng tôi ngồi nghe thầy đây đã ra quá hẹp, so với số người chúng tôi.

2Vậy xin cho chúng tôi đi ra bờ sông Gio-đan ; ở đó, mỗi người chúng tôi sẽ lấy một cái xà, rồi làm một nơi để ngồi nghe.” Ông bảo : “Các anh cứ đi !”

3Một người trong nhóm nói : “Xin thầy vui lòng cùng đi với các tôi tớ thầy.” Ông đáp : “Được, tôi sẽ đi”,

4rồi ông cùng đi với họ. Tới sông Gio-đan, họ đốn cây.

5Khi một người trong nhóm đang hạ cây làm xà, thì lưỡi rìu bằng sắt văng xuống nước. Người ấy liền kêu lên : “Chết rồi, ngài ơi ! Cái rìu này, tôi mượn của người ta !”

6Người của Thiên Chúa hỏi : “Nó văng đi đâu ?” Người ấy chỉ chỗ cho ông. Ông chặt một khúc gỗ, ném xuống đó và làm cho lưỡi rìu bằng sắt nổi lên.

7Ông bảo : “Vớt lên đi !” Người kia đưa tay ra cầm lấy.

8Hồi ấy, vua A-ram đang giao chiến với Ít-ra-en. Vua bàn với các thuộc hạ và bảo chúng : “Ta sẽ đặt trại quân chỗ này, chỗ nọ.”

9Nhưng người của Thiên Chúa nhắn tin cho vua Ít-ra-en : “Xin ngài đề phòng, đừng đi qua chỗ ấy, vì quân A-ram đi xuống đó.”

10Vua Ít-ra-en mới sai lính tới chỗ người của Thiên Chúa đã nói, đã báo cho biết ; vua đề phòng, không phải chỉ một hay hai lần mà thôi.

11Lòng vua A-ram rất nao núng vì chuyện này. Vua gọi các thuộc hạ lại và bảo : “Chẳng lẽ các ngươi không báo cho ta biết ai trong chúng ta đã bỏ theo vua Ít-ra-en sao ?”

12Một người trong nhóm thuộc hạ đáp : “Thưa đức vua, chúa công tôi, chẳng có ai đâu ! Chính ông Ê-li-sa, ngôn sứ của Ít-ra-en, đã cho vua Ít-ra-en biết những lời ngài nói trong phòng ngủ của ngài.”

13Vua nói : “Đi coi xem ông ấy ở đâu ! Ta sẽ sai người đi bắt.” Người ta cho vua biết : “Ông ấy đang ở Đô-than.”

14Vua liền phái tới đó một đạo quân lớn, có cả ngựa xe. Chúng đến nơi ban đêm và bao vây thành.

15Sáng hôm sau, người của Thiên Chúa dậy sớm và đi ra ngoài. Và kìa một toán quân có cả ngựa xe đang vây quanh thành. Người đầy tớ nói với ông : “Chết rồi, ngài ơi ! Làm sao bây giờ ?”

16Ông trả lời : “Đừng sợ, vì những người đi theo chúng ta thì đông hơn những người đi theo chúng.”

17Ông Ê-li-sa cầu xin rằng : “Lạy ĐỨC CHÚA, xin mở mắt cho nó thấy !” ĐỨC CHÚA mở mắt người đầy tớ của ông và nó thấy núi đầy những ngựa và xe đỏ như lửa vây quanh ông Ê-li-sa.

18Khi quân A-ram kéo xuống phía ông Ê-li-sa, thì ông cầu xin ĐỨC CHÚA : “Xin Chúa đánh mờ mắt những quân này.” Và ĐỨC CHÚA đã đánh mờ mắt chúng, theo lời ông Ê-li-sa xin.

19Khi đó, ông Ê-li-sa bảo chúng : “Đây không phải là đường, cũng không phải là thành. Các anh đi theo tôi, tôi sẽ dẫn các anh đến người các anh đang tìm kiếm.” Và ông đã dẫn chúng tới Sa-ma-ri.

20Khi chúng vào Sa-ma-ri, ông Ê-li-sa lại nói : “Lạy ĐỨC CHÚA, xin mở mắt cho những người này, cho chúng thấy được.” ĐỨC CHÚA đã mở mắt chúng và chúng thấy là mình đang ở giữa thành Sa-ma-ri !

21Thấy chúng, vua Ít-ra-en nói với ông Ê-li-sa : “Thưa cha, có phải giết chúng không ?”

22Ông đáp : “Đừng giết ! Thử hỏi những kẻ vua đã dùng gươm dùng nỏ bắt làm tù binh, thì vua có giết không ? Vua hãy đem bánh và nước tới cho chúng ăn uống, rồi để chúng trở về với chủ của chúng !”

23Vua dọn tiệc lớn đãi chúng. Khi chúng ăn uống xong, vua cho chúng đi và chúng trở về với chủ của chúng. Những toán quân A-ram không còn xâm nhập Ít-ra-en nữa.

24Sau đó, Ben Ha-đát, vua A-ram, tập họp tất cả quân đội lại, tiến lên vây thành Sa-ma-ri.

25Ở Sa-ma-ri, đang có một nạn đói lớn ; thành bị địch bao vây gắt gao đến nỗi một đầu lừa lên tới hai mươi bốn lượng bạc, và một dúm hành dại cũng lên tới mười lăm chỉ bạc.

26Khi vua Ít-ra-en đang đi lại trên tường thành, thì một phụ nữ kêu với vua rằng : “Thưa đức vua, chúa thượng tôi, xin cứu tôi với !”

27Vua trả lời : “Nếu ĐỨC CHÚA không cứu ngươi, thì ta biết lấy gì để cứu ngươi ? Chẳng lẽ lấy sân lúa hay bồn đạp nho ?”

28Rồi vua hỏi chị ta : “Chuyện gì vậy ?” Chị ấy thưa : “Mụ này đã nói với tôi : ‘Đưa con chị đây, chúng ta ăn thịt nó hôm nay ; ngày mai, chúng ta sẽ ăn thịt con tôi !’

29Chúng tôi đã nấu chín con tôi và ăn thịt nó. Hôm sau, tôi bảo mụ : ‘Đưa con chị đây, chúng ta ăn thịt nó !’ Nhưng mụ đã giấu con đi.”

30Vừa nghe người phụ nữ nói những lời ấy, vua liền xé áo mình ra. Vì vua đang đi lại trên tường thành, nên dân thấy được là bên trong vua mặc áo lót bằng vải thô.

31Vua nói : “Xin Thiên Chúa phạt ta thế này và thêm thế kia nữa, nếu hôm nay đầu của Ê-li-sa, con Sa-phát, còn nằm trên cổ của hắn !”

32Ông Ê-li-sa đang ngồi trong nhà và có những kỳ mục ngồi với ông, thì vua sai người đến với ông. Nhưng trước khi sứ giả đến nơi, ông Ê-li-sa nói với các kỳ mục : “Các ông thấy không : Kẻ sát nhân ấy sai người đến lấy đầu tôi ! Vậy thế này : Khi nào sứ giả đến, thì đóng cửa lại, lấy cửa đẩy nó ra. Nhưng tiếng chân chủ nó chẳng đang theo sau nó đấy ư ?”

33Ông còn đang nói, thì vua đã xuống gặp ông và bảo : “Tai hoạ này do ĐỨC CHÚA giáng xuống, thế thì tôi còn biết trông đợi gì nữa nơi ĐỨC CHÚA ?”

1And the sons of the prophets said to Eliseus: Behold the place where we dwell with thee is too strait for us.

2Let us go as far as the Jordan and take out of the wood every man a piece of timber, that we may build us there a place to dwell in. And he said: Go.

3And one of them said: But come thou also with thy servants. He answered: I will come.

4So he went with them. And when they were come to the Jordan they cut down wood.

5And it happened, as one was felling some timber, that the head of the axe fell into the water: and he cried out, and said: Alas, alas, alas, my lord, for this same was borrowed.

6And the man of God said: Where did it fall? and he shewed him the place. Then he cut off a piece of wood, and cast it in thither: and the iron swam.

7And he said: Take it up. And he put out his hand and took it.

8And the king of Syria warred against Israel, and took counsel with his servants, saying: In such and such a place let us lay ambushes.

9And the man of God sent to the king of Israel, saying: Beware that thou pass not to such a place: for the Syrians are there in ambush.

10And the king of Israel sent to the place which the man of God had told him, and prevented him, and looked well to himself there not once nor twice.

11And the heart of the king of Syria was troubled for this thing. And calling together his servants, he said: Why do you not tell me who it is that betrays me to the king of Israel?

12And one of his servants said: No one, my lord O king: but Eliseus the prophet, that is in Israel, telleth the king of Israel all the words, that thou speakest in thy privy chamber.

13And he said to them: Go, and see where he is: that I may send, and take him. And they told him, saying: Behold he is in Dothan.

14Therefore he sent thither horses and chariots, and the strength of an army: and they came by night, and beset the city.

15And the servant of the man of God rising early, went out, and saw an army round about the city, and horses and chariots: and he told him, saying: Alas, alas, alas, my lord, what shall we do?

16But he answered: Fear not: for there are more with us than with them.

17And Eliseus prayed, and said: Lord, open his eyes, that he may see. And the Lord opened the eyes of the servant, and he saw: and behold the mountain was full of horses, and chariots of fire round about Eliseus.

18And the enemies came down to him, but Eliseus prayed to the Lord, saying: Strike, I beseech thee, this people with blindness. And the Lord struck them with blindness, according to the word of Eliseus.

19And Eliseus said to them: This is not the way, neither is this the city: follow me, and I will shew you the man whom you seek. So he led them into Samaria.

20And when they were come into Samaria, Eliseus said: Lord, open the eyes of these men, that they may see. And the Lord opened their eyes, and they saw themselves to be in the midst of Samaria.

21And the king of Israel said to Eliseus, when he saw them: My father, shall I kill them?

22And he said: Thou shalt not kill them: for thou didst not take them with thy sword, or thy bow, that thou mayst kill them: but set bread and water before them, that they may eat and drink, and go to their master.

23And a great provision of meats was set before them, and they ate and drank, and he let them go, and they went away to their master, and the robbers of Syria came no more into the land of Israel.

24And it came to pass after these things, that Benadad king of Syria gathered together all his army, and went up, and besieged Samaria.

25And there was a great famine in Samaria: and so long did the siege continue, till the head of an ass was sold for fourscore pieces of silver, and the fourth part of a cabe of pigeon’s dung, for five pieces of silver.

26And as the king of Israel was passing by the wall, a certain woman cried out to him, saying: Save me, my lord O king.

27And he said: If the Lord doth not save thee, how can I save thee? out of the barnfloor, or out of the winepress? And the king said to her: What aileth thee? And she answered:

28This woman said to me: Give thy son, that we may eat him today, and we will eat my son tomorrow.

29So we boiled my son, and ate him. And I said to her on the next day: Give thy son that we may eat him. And she hath hid her son.

30When the king heard this, he rent his garments, and passed by upon the wall. And all the people saw the haircloth which he wore within next to his flesh.

31And the king said: May God do so and so to me, and may he add more, if the head of Eliseus the son of Saphat shall stand on him this day.

32But Eliseus sat in his house, and the ancients sat with him. So he sent a man before: and before that messenger came, he said to the ancients: Do you know that this son of a murderer hath sent to cut off my head? Look then, when the messenger shall come, shut the door, and suffer him not to come in: for behold the sound of his master’s feet is behind him.

33While he was yet speaking to them, the messenger appeared who was coming to him. And he said: Behold, so great an evil is from the Lord: what shall I look for more from the Lord?
