1And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying:

2Command the children of Israel, that they cast out of the camp every leper, and whosoever hath an issue of seed, or is defiled by the dead:

3Whether it be man or woman, cast ye them out of the camp, lest they defile it when I shall dwell with you.

4And the children of Israel did so, and they cast them forth without the camp, as the Lord had spoken to Moses.

5And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying:

6Say to the children of Israel: When a man or woman shall have committed any of all the sins that men are wont to commit, and by negligence shall have transgressed the commandment of the Lord, and offended,

7They shall confess their sin, and restore the principal itself, and the fifth part over and above, to him against whom they have sinned.

8But if there be no one to receive it, they shall give it to the Lord, and it shall be the priest’s, besides the ram that is offered for expiation, to be an atoning sacrifice.

9All the firstfruits also, which the children of Israel offer, belong to the priest:

10And whatsoever is offered into the sanctuary by every one, and is delivered into the hands of the priest, it shall be his.

11And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying:

12Speak to the children of Israel, and thou shalt say to them: The man whose wife shall have gone astray, and contemning her husband,

13Shall have slept with another man, and her husband cannot discover it, but the adultery is secret, and cannot be proved by witnesses, because she was not found in the adultery:

14If the spirit of jealousy stir up the husband against his wife, who either is defiled, or is charged with false suspicion,

15He shall bring her to the priest, and shall offer an oblation for her, the tenth part of a measure of barley meal: he shall not pour oil thereon, nor put frankincense upon it: because it is a sacrifice of jealousy, and an oblation searching out adultery.

16The priest therefore shall offer it, and set it before the Lord.

17And he shall take holy water in an earthen vessel, and he shall cast a little earth of the pavement of the tabernacle into it.

18And when the woman shall stand before the Lord, he shall uncover her head, and shall, put on her hands the sacrifice of remembrance, and the oblation of jealousy: and he himself shall hold the most bitter waters, whereon he hath heaped curses with execration.

19And he shall adjure her, and shall say: If another man hath not slept with thee, and if thou be not defiled by forsaking thy husband’s bed, these most bitter waters, on which I have heaped curses, shall not hurt thee.

20But if thou hast gone aside from thy husband, and art defiled, and hast lain with another man:

21These curses shall light upon thee: The Lord make thee a curse, and an example for all among his people: may he make thy thigh to rot, and may thy belly swell and burst asunder.

22Let the cursed waters enter into thy belly, and may thy womb swell and thy thigh rot. And the woman shall answer, Amen, amen.

23And the priest shall write these curses in a book, and shall wash them out with the most bitter waters, upon which he hath heaped the curses,

24And he shall give them her to drink. And when she hath drunk them up,

25The priest shall take from her hand the sacrifice of jealousy, and shall elevate it before the Lord, and shall put it upon the altar: yet so as first,

26To take a handful of the sacrifice of that which is offered, and burn it upon the altar: and so give the most bitter waters to the woman to drink.

27And when she hath drunk them, if she be defiled, and having despised her husband be guilty of adultery, the malediction shall go through her, and her belly swelling, her thigh shall rot: and the woman shall be a curse, and an example to all the people.

28But if she be not defiled, she shall not be hurt, and shall bear children.

29This is the law of jealousy. If a woman hath gone aside from her husband, and be defiled,

30And the husband stirred up by the spirit of jealousy bring her before the Lord, and the priest do to her according to all things that are here written:

31The husband shall be blameless, and she shall bear her iniquity.

1ĐỨC CHÚA phán với ông Mô-sê rằng :

2“Hãy truyền cho con cái Ít-ra-en phải đuổi ra khỏi trại mọi người bị bệnh phong, mọi kẻ mắc bệnh lậu, mọi người nhiễm uế vì xác chết :

3Các ngươi phải đuổi chúng, bất kể đàn ông hay đàn bà, các ngươi phải đuổi ra khỏi trại, kẻo chúng làm ô uế trại, nơi Ta cư ngụ ở giữa chúng.”

4Con cái Ít-ra-en đã làm như thế : họ đã đuổi những người ấy ra khỏi trại. Con cái Ít-ra-en đã làm như ĐỨC CHÚA đã phán với ông Mô-sê.

5ĐỨC CHÚA phán với ông Mô-sê rằng :

6“Ngươi hãy nói với con cái Ít-ra-en : ‘Phàm ai, đàn ông hay đàn bà, vì bất trung với ĐỨC CHÚA, mà phạm một trong những tội người ta quen phạm, thì con người ấy phải chịu phạt.

7Nó phải xưng thú tội mình đã phạm và đền bù đầy đủ, ngoài ra còn phải trả thêm một phần năm nữa cho người mình đã làm thiệt hại.

8Nếu người này không có bà con gần để lãnh của bồi thường thiệt hại, thì vật bồi thường sẽ thuộc về ĐỨC CHÚA, tức là thuộc về tư tế, chưa kể con dê xá tội phải dâng để làm nghi thức xá tội cho người mắc lỗi.

9Mọi của trích dâng và mọi hiến vật mà con cái Ít-ra-en dâng cho tư tế đều thuộc về tư tế.

10Hiến vật của ai thì thuộc về người ấy ; còn nếu đã dâng cho tư tế thì là của tư tế.’”

11ĐỨC CHÚA phán với ông Mô-sê :

12“Ngươi hãy nói với con cái Ít-ra-en và bảo chúng : Nếu ai bị vợ mất nết phản bội,

13nghĩa là có người nằm với người đàn bà ấy mà người chồng không biết ; và người vợ đã bí mật thất tiết mà không có ai làm chứng cáo tội, không bắt được quả tang ;

14hoặc người chồng nổi máu ghen và ghen tức vợ đã thật sự thất tiết, hoặc nổi máu ghen và ghen tức vợ mà thật ra vợ đã không thất tiết,

15thì bấy giờ người chồng phải dẫn vợ đến gặp tư tế, mà tiến dâng bốn lít rưỡi bột lúa mạch vì chuyện vợ mình ; nhưng không rưới dầu lên trên và cũng không đổ hương vào, bởi đó là lễ phẩm dâng vì ghen tuông, lễ phẩm để tố cáo tội lỗi.

16Tư tế sẽ đưa người đàn bà đến đứng trước nhan ĐỨC CHÚA,

17và lấy một bình sành đựng nước thánh, rồi lấy chút bụi trên nền Nhà Tạm bỏ vào nước.

18Sau đó, tư tế đặt người đàn bà đứng trước nhan ĐỨC CHÚA và lột khăn trùm đầu nó ra, rồi đặt lên hai bàn tay nó lễ phẩm tố cáo, nghĩa là lễ phẩm vì ghen tuông ; đồng thời tay tư tế cầm bình nước chỉ sự đắng cay và nguyền rủa.

19Bấy giờ tư tế sẽ buộc người đàn bà thề và nói với nó rằng : ‘Nếu đã không có người đàn ông nào nằm với chị và nếu chị đã không mất nết mà thất tiết khi chị đang có chồng, thì nước đắng cay và nguyền rủa này sẽ vô hại cho chị.

20Còn nếu chị có chồng mà mất nết và đã thất tiết với chồng, vì một người đàn ông khác, không phải là chồng chị, đã cho chị nằm với nó –

21tư tế buộc người đàn bà thề độc và nói với nó– Xin ĐỨC CHÚA làm cho dạ chị héo đi, bụng chị sình lên, khiến giữa đồng bào chị, chị thành đề tài cho người ta nguyền rủa và chúc dữ cho nhau.

22Xin cho nước đắng cay này ngấm vào nội tạng chị, khiến bụng chị sình lên và dạ chị héo đi.’ Người đàn bà ấy sẽ thưa : ‘A-men. A-men.’

23Tư tế viết những lời nguyền rủa ấy vào giấy và cho nhoà đi trong nước đắng cay,

24rồi bắt người đàn bà phải uống nước đắng cay và nguyền rủa đó ; nước nguyền rủa sẽ ngấm vào người ấy để gây ra cay đắng.

25Tư tế sẽ nhận lấy từ tay người đàn bà lễ phẩm vì ghen tuông, làm nghi thức trước nhan ĐỨC CHÚA và đặt trên bàn thờ.

26Sau đó ông sẽ đưa nước ấy cho người đàn bà uống.

27Tư tế cho nó uống nước rồi, nếu thật nó đã thất tiết và phản bội chồng, thì nước nguyền rủa sẽ ngấm vào nó để gây ra cay đắng, và tạng phủ nó sẽ sình lên, dạ nó héo đi. Giữa đồng bào, người đàn bà đó sẽ thành đề tài nguyền rủa.

28Nếu người đàn bà đó đã không thất tiết, nhưng vẫn trong sạch, thì sẽ không bị hại và sẽ sinh con.

29Đó là luật về chuyện ghen tuông, khi một người đàn bà có chồng mà mất nết và đã thất tiết với chồng,

30hoặc khi người đàn ông nổi máu ghen và ghen tức vợ mình : thì người chồng phải đặt vợ trước nhan ĐỨC CHÚA, và tư tế phải áp dụng đầy đủ luật này.

31Người chồng sẽ vô can, còn người đàn bà sẽ mang lấy tội mình.”
