Esther

1After this, when the wrath of king Assuerus was appeased, he remembered Vasthi, and what she had done and what she had suffered:

2And the king’s servants and his officers said: Let young women be sought for the king, virgins and beautiful,

3And let some persons be sent through all the provinces to look for beautiful maidens and virgins: and let them bring them to the city of Susan, and put them into the house of the women under the hand of Egeus the eunuch, who is the overseer and keeper of the king’s women: and let them receive women’s ornaments, and other things necessary for their use.

4And whosoever among them all shall please the king’s eyes, let her be queen instead of Vasthi. The word pleased the king: and he commanded it should be done as they had suggested.

5There was a man in the city of Susan, a Jew, named Mardochai, the son of Jair, the son of Semei, the son of Cis, of the race of Jemini,

6Who had been carried away from Jerusalem at the time that Nabuchodonosor king of Babylon carried away Jechonias king of Juda,

7And he had brought up his brother’s daughter Edissa, who by another name was called Esther: now she had lost both her parents: and was exceeding fair and beautiful. And her father and mother being dead, Mardochai adopted her for his daughter.

8And when the king’s ordinance was noised abroad, and according to his commandment many beautiful virgins were brought to Susan, and were delivered to Egeus the eunuch: Esther also among the rest of the maidens was delivered to him to be kept in the number of the women.

9And she pleased him, and found favour in his sight. And he commanded the eunuch to hasten the women’s ornaments, and to deliver to her her part, and seven of the most beautiful maidens of the king’s house, and to adorn and deck out both her and her waiting maids.

10And she would not tell him her people nor her country. For Mardochai had charged her to say nothing at all of that:

11And he walked every day before the court of the house, in which the chosen virgins were kept, having a care for Esther’s welfare, and desiring to know what would befall her.

12Now when every virgin’s turn came to go in to the king, after all had been done for setting them off to advantage, it was the twelfth month: so that for six months they were anointed with oil of myrrh, and for other six months they used certain perfumes and sweet spices.

13And when they were going in to the king, whatsoever they asked to adorn themselves they received: and being decked out, as it pleased them, they passed from the chamber of the women to the king’s chamber.

14And she that went in at evening, came out in the morning, and from thence she was conducted to the second house, that was under the hand of Susagaz the eunuch, who had the charge over the king’s concubines: neither could she return any more to the king, unless the king desired it, and had ordered her by name to come.

15And as the time came orderly about, the day was at hand, when Esther, the daughter of Abihail the brother of Mardochai, whom he had adopted for his daughter, was to go in to the king. But she sought not women’s ornaments, but whatsoever Egeus the eunuch the keeper of the virgins had a mind, he gave her to adorn her. For she was exceeding fair, and her incredible beauty made her appear agreeable and amiable in the eyes of all.

16So she was brought to the chamber of king Assuerus the tenth month, which is called Tebeth, in the seventh year of his reign.

17And the king loved her more than all the women, and she had favour and kindness before him above all the women, and he set the royal crown on her head, and made her queen instead of Vasthi.

18And he commanded a magnificent feast to be prepared for all the princes, and for his servants, for the marriage and wedding of Esther. And he gave rest to all the provinces, and bestowed gifts according to princely magnificence.

19And when the virgins were sought the second time, and gathered together, Mardochai stayed at the king’s gate,

20Neither had Esther as yet declared her country and people, according to his commandment. For whatsoever he commanded, Esther observed: and she did all things in the same manner as she was wont at that time when he brought her up a little one.

21At that time, therefore, when Mardochai abode at the king’s gate, Bagathan and Thares, two of the king’s eunuchs, who were porters, and presided in the first entry of the palace, were angry: and they designed to rise up against the king, and to kill him.

22And Mardochai had notice of it, and immediately he told it to queen Esther: and she to the king in Mardochai’s name, who had reported the thing unto her.

23It was inquired into, and found out: and they were both hanged on a gibbet. And it was put in the histories, and recorded in the chronicles before the king.

1Sau những biến cố đó, khi cơn giận đã dịu xuống, vua A-suê-rô lại nhớ đến bà Vát-ti, nhớ đến những gì bà đã làm và những quyết định của vua đối với bà.

2Các quan hầu cận vua mới nói : “Phải kiếm cho đức vua những thiếu nữ còn trinh và có nhan sắc.

3Xin đức vua bổ nhiệm các tổng đốc trong mọi miền thuộc vương quốc để tập hợp về thành Su-san tất cả các thiếu nữ còn trinh và có nhan sắc, rồi đem vào hậu cung, đặt dưới quyền viên thái giám của vua là Hê-ghe, người có nhiệm vụ trông nom phụ nữ. Phải cung cấp cho họ các mỹ phẩm.

4Thiếu nữ nào được vua ưa thích, sẽ làm hoàng hậu thay thế bà Vát-ti.” Lời đề nghị đó vừa ý vua, và vua đã cho thi hành như vậy.

5Trong thành Su-san, có một người Do-thái tên là Moóc-đo-khai, con ông Gia-ia (ông Gia-ia là con ông Sim-y, ông Sim-y là con ông Kít), thuộc chi tộc Ben-gia-min.

6Từ Giê-ru-sa-lem, ông đã bị đi đày trong số những người bị đi đày cùng với vua Giu-đa là Giơ-khon-gia, những người mà vua Ba-by-lon là Na-bu-cô-đô-nô-xo đã phát lưu.

7Ông nuôi nấng dạy dỗ Ha-đát-xa, tức là Ét-te, con gái của người chú ông, vì cô ta mồ côi cả cha lẫn mẹ. Thiếu nữ dung mạo xinh đẹp và dễ coi. Sau khi cha mẹ cô qua đời. Ông Moóc-đo-khai đã nhận cô làm con.

8Khi lệnh vua và chỉ dụ được công bố, một số đông thiếu nữ được tập hợp về thành Su-san, đặt dưới quyền ông Hê-ghe. Cô Ét-te cũng được đưa về hoàng cung, ở dưới quyền ông Hê-ghe, người có nhiệm vụ trông nom phụ nữ.

9Thiếu nữ được ông ưa thích và được lòng ông. Ông vội cung cấp các mỹ phẩm và phần lương thực cần thiết cho cô. Ông còn cho bảy cung nữ tuyển chọn trong hoàng cung để phục vụ cô, rồi chuyển cô và các cung nữ đó về phòng tốt nhất trong hậu cung.

10Cô Ét-te không tiết lộ gì về dân tộc, nguồn gốc của mình, vì ông Moóc-đo-khai cấm cô không được tiết lộ.

11Mỗi ngày, ông Moóc-đo-khai lui tới sân hậu cung để biết tin về sức khoẻ của cô Ét-te và về những gì xảy ra cho cô.

12Một thiếu nữ được vào hầu vua A-suê-rô sau thời gian mười hai tháng thi hành đúng quy chế dành cho các phụ nữ. Thời gian trau dồi sắc đẹp diễn tiến như sau cho đến lúc hoàn thành : sáu tháng dùng dầu thơm một dược, sáu tháng thoa kem và dùng các mỹ phẩm khác của phụ nữ.

13Thiếu nữ nào rời hậu cung để vào hoàng cung thì được lãnh tất cả những gì cô xin và được mang theo.

14Thiếu nữ đó vào hoàng cung lúc ban chiều, và sáng hôm sau, trở về một hậu cung khác dưới quyền viên thái giám Sa-át-gát, người được vua trao nhiệm vụ trông nom các cung phi. Cô không còn được vào hầu vua nữa, trừ khi vua đem lòng sủng ái và gọi đích danh.

15Nay đến lượt Ét-te vào hầu vua. Cô là con gái ông A-vi-kha-gin, chú ông Moóc-đo-khai ; ông này là người đã nhận cô làm con. Cô chẳng xin gì, ngoại trừ những món viên thái giám của vua đã dặn. Viên thái giám này tên là Hê-ghe, có nhiệm vụ trông nom phụ nữ. Ai nhìn thấy cô cũng đem lòng thương mến.

16Cô được đem vào hoàng cung hầu vua A-suê-rô. Bấy giờ là tháng thứ mười, tức là tháng Tê-vết, năm thứ bảy triều đại vua.

17Vua yêu quý cô hơn mọi phụ nữ khác. Cô được vua mến thương và ưu ái hơn mọi trinh nữ. Vì thế, vua đội triều thiên cho cô và tôn làm hoàng hậu thay thế bà Vát-ti.

18Vua mở tiệc linh đình đãi các khanh tướng quần thần, gọi là tiệc mừng hoàng hậu Ét-te. Vua cho tất cả các miền nghỉ lễ một ngày và rộng tay ban phát tặng vật xứng bậc đế vương.

19Khi các trinh nữ được tập hợp lần thứ hai, lúc ông Moóc-đo-khai ngồi ở cung môn,

20hoàng hậu Ét-te vẫn không cho biết bà thuộc dòng giống nào, dân tộc nào, theo lời ông Moóc-đo-khai đã dặn. Bà vẫn thi hành chỉ thị của ông như hồi còn được ông nuôi nấng dạy dỗ.

21Bấy giờ, ông Moóc-đo-khai ngồi ở cung môn. Có hai viên thái giám của vua là Bi-gơ-than và Te-rét đang giữ phận sự gác cửa hoàng cung, đã nổi giận vì bất mãn, nên tìm cách tra tay hại vua A-suê-rô.

22Biết chuyện đó, ông Moóc-đo-khai liền báo cho hoàng hậu Ét-te ; hoàng hậu tâu lại vua những điều ông Moóc-đo-khai đã tiết lộ.

23Sự việc được điều tra và xác nhận, hai viên thái giám kia liền bị treo cổ. Vụ này được ghi chép vào sách Sử biên niên trước mặt vua.
