Jonathan’s Victory over the Philistines

1One day Jonathan son of Saul said to the young man bearing his armor, “Come, let us cross over to the Philistine outpost on the other side.” But Jonathan did not tell his father.

2Meanwhile, Saul was staying under the pomegranate treein Migron on the outskirts of Gibeah. And the troops who were with him numbered about six hundred men,

3including Ahijah, who was wearing an ephod. He was the son of Ichabod’s brother Ahitub son of Phinehas, the son of Eli the priest of the LORD in Shiloh. But the troops did not know that Jonathan had left.

4Now there were cliffs on both sides of the pass that Jonathan intended to cross to reach the Philistine outpost. One was named Bozez and the other Seneh.

5One cliff stood to the north toward Michmash, and the other to the south toward Geba.

6Jonathan said to the young man bearing his armor, “Come, let us cross over to the outpost of these uncircumcised men. Perhaps the LORD will work on our behalf. Nothing can hinder the LORD from saving, whether by many or by few.”

7His armor-bearer replied, “Do all that is in your heart. Go ahead; I am with you heart and soul.”

8“Very well,” said Jonathan, “we will cross over toward these men and show ourselves to them.

9If they say, ‘Wait until we come to you,’ then we will stay where we are and will not go up to them.

10But if they say, ‘Come on up,’ then we will go up, because this will be our sign that the LORD has delivered them into our hands.”

11So the two of them showed themselves to the outpost of the Philistines, who exclaimed, “Look, the Hebrews are coming out of the holes in which they were hiding!”

12So the men of the outpost called out to Jonathan and his armor-bearer, “Come on up, and we will teach you a lesson!” “Follow me,” Jonathan told his armor-bearer, “for the LORD has delivered them into the hand of Israel.”

13So Jonathan climbed up on his hands and feet, with his armor-bearer behind him. And the Philistines fell before Jonathan, and his armor-bearer followed and finished them off.

14In that first assault, Jonathan and his armor-bearer struck down about twenty men in about half an acreof land.

15Then panic struck the Philistines in the camp, in the field, and among all the people. Even those in the outposts and raiding parties trembled. Indeed, the earth quaked, and panic spread from God.

16Now when Saul’s watchmen at Gibeah in Benjamin looked and saw the troops melting away and scattering in every direction,

17Saul said to the troops who were with him, “Call the roll and see who has left us.” And when they had called the roll, they saw that Jonathan and his armor-bearer were not there.

18Then Saul said to Ahijah, “Bring the ark of God.” (For at that time it was with the Israelites.)

19While Saul was talking to the priest, the commotion in the Philistine camp continued to increase. So Saul said to the priest, “Withdraw your hand.”

20Then Saul and all his troops assembled and marched to the battle, and they found the Philistines in total confusion, with each man wielding the sword against his neighbor.

21And the Hebrews who had previously gone up into the surrounding camps to join the Philistines now went over to the Israelites who were with Saul and Jonathan.

22When all the Israelites who had been hiding in the hill country of Ephraim heard that the Philistines were fleeing, they also joined the battle in close pursuit.

23So the LORD saved Israel that day, and the battle moved on beyond Beth-aven.

Jonathan Eats the Honey

24Now the men of Israel were in distress that day, for Saul had placed the troops under an oath, saying, “Cursed is the man who eats any food before evening, before I have taken vengeance on my enemies.” So none of the troops tasted any food.

25Then all the troops entered the forest, and there was honey on the ground.

26And when they entered the forest and saw the flowing honey, not one of them put his hand to his mouth, because they feared the oath.

27Jonathan, however, had not heard that his father had bound the people with the oath. So he reached out the end of the staff in his hand, dipped it into the honeycomb, and put his hand to his mouth, and his eyes brightened.

28Then one of the soldiers told him, “Your father bound the troops with a solemn oath, saying, ‘Cursed is the man who eats food today.’ That is why the people are faint.”

29“My father has brought trouble to the land,” Jonathan replied. “Just look at how my eyes have brightened because I tasted a little of this honey.

30How much better it would have been if the troops had eaten freely today from the plunder they took from their enemies! Would not the slaughter of the Philistines have been much greater?”

31That day, after the Israelites had struck down the Philistines from Michmash to Aijalon, the people were very faint.

32So they rushed greedily to the plunder, taking sheep, cattle, and calves. They slaughtered them on the ground and ate meat with the blood still in it.

33Then someone reported to Saul: “Look, the troops are sinning against the LORD by eating meat with the blood still in it.” “You have broken faith,” said Saul. “Roll a large stone over here at once.”

34Then he said, “Go among the troops and tell them, ‘Each man must bring me his ox or his sheep, slaughter them in this place, and then eat. Do not sin against the LORD by eating meat with the blood still in it.’” So that night everyone brought his ox and slaughtered it there.

35Then Saul built an altar to the LORD; it was the first time he had built an altar to the LORD.

36And Saul said, “Let us go down after the Philistines by night and plunder them until dawn, leaving no man alive!” “Do what seems good to you,” the troops replied. But the priest said, “We must consult God here.”

The People Save Jonathan

37So Saul inquired of God, “Shall I go down after the Philistines? Will You give them into the hand of Israel?” But God did not answer him that day.

38Therefore Saul said, “Come here, all you leaders of the troops, and let us investigate how this sin has occurred today.

39As surely as the LORD who saves Israel lives, even if it is my son Jonathan, he must die!” But not one of the troops said a word.

40Then Saul said to all Israel, “You stand on one side, and I and my son Jonathan will stand on the other side.” “Do what seems good to you,” the troops replied.

41So Saul said to the LORD, the God of Israel, “Why have You not answered Your servant this day? If the fault is with me or my son Jonathan, respond with Urim, but if the fault is with the men of Israel, respond with Thummim.”And Jonathan and Saul were selected, but the people were cleared of the charge.

42Then Saul said, “Cast the lot between me and my son Jonathan.” And Jonathan was selected.

43“Tell me what you have done,” Saul commanded him. So Jonathan told him, “I only tasted a little honey with the end of the staff that was in my hand. And now I must die?”

44And Saul declared, “May God punish me, and ever so severely, if you, Jonathan, do not surely die!”

45But the people said to Saul, “Must Jonathan die—he who accomplished such a great deliverance for Israel? Never! As surely as the LORD lives, not a hair of his head will fall to the ground, for with God’s help he has accomplished this today.” So the people rescued Jonathan, and he did not die.

46Then Saul gave up his pursuit of the Philistines, and the Philistines returned to their own land.

Saul’s Victories

47After Saul had assumed the kingship over Israel, he fought against all his enemies on every side—the Moabites, the Ammonites, the Edomites, the kingsof Zobah, and the Philistines. Wherever he turned, he routed them.

48He fought valiantly and defeated the Amalekites, delivering Israel from the hands of its plunderers.

49Now the sons of Saul were Jonathan, Ishvi, and Malchishua. His two daughters were named Merab (his firstborn) and Michal (his younger daughter).

50His wife’s name was Ahinoam daughter of Ahimaaz. The name of the commander of his army was Abner, the son of Saul’s uncle Ner.

51Saul’s father Kish and Abner’s father Ner were sons of Abiel.

52And the war with the Philistines was fierce for all the days of Saul. So whenever he noticed any strong or brave man, Saul would enlist him.

1Một ngày kia, Giô-na-than, con trai của Sau-lơ, nói cùng gã trai trẻ vác binh khí mình, mà rằng: Hè, chúng ta hãy đi qua đồn quân Phi-li-tin, đóng ở phía bên kia. Nhưng người chẳng nói cho cha mình hay.

2Bấy giờ, Sau-lơ ở tại đầu ranh Ghi-bê-a, dưới cây lựu của Mi-gơ-rôn, còn đạo quân theo người ước chừng sáu trăm người.

3A-hi-gia, con trai A-hi-túp, anh của Y-ca-bốt, con trai Phi-nê-a, cháu Hê-li, mặc áo ê-phót, làm thầy tế lễ tại Si-lô. Dân sự không biết Giô-na-than đi.

4ỳ giữa đèo mà Giô-na-than gắng sức đi đặng đến đồn Phi-li-tin, có một răng đá ở bên nầy, và một răng ở bên kia; cái nầy gọi là Bốt-sết, còn cái kia gọi là Sê-nê.

5Một cái răng đá mọc lên về phía bắc, đối ngang Mích-ma, còn cái kia ở tại phía nam, đối ngang Ghê-ba.

6Giô-na-than nói cùng kẻ vác binh khí mình rằng: Hè, chúng ta hãy hãm đồn của những kẻ chẳng chịu cắt bì kia. Hoặc giả Đức Giê-hô-va sẽ hành sự vì chúng ta chăng; vì Đức Giê-hô-va khiến cho số ít người được thắng cũng như số đông người vậy.

7Kẻ vác binh khí của người thưa rằng: Hãy làm điều ông ước, và đi nơi nào ông muốn; lòng ông dẫn ông đi đâu, tôi sẽ theo đó.

8Giô-na-than tiếp: Nầy, chúng ta hãy đi đến những người ấy, tỏ mình ra cho chúng nó.

9Nếu chúng nó nói: Hãy đợi chúng ta đến cùng các ngươi, thì chúng ta sẽ đứng lại chỗ mình và không lên đến cùng chúng nó.

10Còn nếu chúng nó nói rằng: Hãy lên đến chúng ta; thì chúng ta sẽ lên; vì Đức Giê-hô-va đã phó chúng nó vào tay chúng ta: điều đó sẽ dùng làm dấu hiệu cho chúng ta.

11Vậy hai người đều đi lên đồn Phi-li-tin. Dân Phi-li-tin nói: Kìa, những người Hê-bơ-rơ ra từ hang đá là nơi chúng nó ẩn trốn kia.

12Lính của đồn nói cùng Giô-na-than và kẻ vác binh khí mà rằng: Hãy đi đến chúng ta, chúng ta có chuyện tỏ cùng hai ngươi. Giô-na-than nói với kẻ vác binh khí mình rằng: Hãy theo ta, vì Đức Giê-hô-va đã phó chúng nó vào tay Y-sơ-ra-ên.

13Giô-na-than dùng tay và chân leo lên, và kẻ cầm binh khí leo theo. Người Phi-li-tin ngã trước mặt Giô-na-than, và kẻ vác binh khí giết chúng nó chết ở đằng sau người.

14Trong trận thứ nhất nầy, Giô-na-than và kẻ vác binh khí người giết chừng hai mươi người, trong một khoảng nửa công đất.

15Sự hãi hùng tràn ra trong trại quân, trong đồng, và trong cả dân Phi-li-tin. Quân đồn và đảng cướp giựt đều bị kinh khủng; đất bị rúng động; ấy như một sự kinh khiếp của Đức Chúa Trời vậy.

16Lính canh của Sau-lơ ở tại Ghi-bê-a trong xứ Bên-gia-min, đều thấy quân chúng Phi-li-tin tản lạc và chạy trốn lộn xộn.

17Bấy giờ, Sau-lơ nói với quân lính ở cùng mình rằng: Hãy kiểm điểm xem ai là những người đã bỏ hàng ngũ chúng ta. Chúng kiểm điểm, thấy thiếu Giô-na-than và kẻ vác binh khí người.

18Sau-lơ nói cùng A-hi-gia rằng: Hãy đem hòm của Đức Chúa Trời đến gần (vì trong ngày đó hòm của Đức Chúa Trời ở cùng dân Y-sơ-ra-ên).

19Nhưng trong khi Sau-lơ nói với thầy tế lễ, thì tiếng ồn ào lại càng thêm lên trong trại quân Phi-li-tin. Sau-lơ nói cùng thầy tế lễ rằng: Hãy rút tay ngươi lại.

20Đoạn, Sau-lơ và hết thảy quân lính ở cùng người hiệp lại, đi tới chốn chiến trường, kìa thấy người Phi-li-tin rút gươm giết lẫn nhau, hỗn loạn cực điểm.

21Những người Hê-bơ-rơ đã từ lâu phục dân Phi-li-tin và theo họ trong trại quân, nay trở lòng hiệp với Y-sơ-ra-ên vẫn theo cùng Sau-lơ và Giô-na-than.

22Lại khi hết thảy người Y-sơ-ra-ên đang ẩn trong núi Eùp-ra-im, nghe dân Phi-li-tin chạy trốn, cũng rượt đuổi theo chúng nó mà đánh giặc.

23Đức Giê-hô-va giải cứu Y-sơ-ra-ên trong ngày đó; cơn giặc tràn đến Bết-A-ven.

24Cũng trong ngày đó, dân Y-sơ-ra-ên bị mệt đuối. Vả lại, Sau-lơ có thề cùng dân sự rằng: Đáng rủa sả người nào sẽ ăn vật thực gì trước khi chiều tối, tức trước khi ta báo thù những kẻ cừu địch ta! Vì vậy, cả dân sự đều cử không ăn vật thực gì hết.

25Song chúng dân đã đến trong một cái rừng có mật ong trên mặt đất.

26Bấy giờ, dân sự đi vào trong rừng, thấy mật nầy chảy; chẳng ai dám chấm tay vào miệng, vì sợ lời thề.

27Nhưng Giô-na-than không biết lời thề mà cha mình đã lập cùng dân sự, nên giơ đầu gậy mình cầm nơi tay chấm vào tàng mật ong, rồi lấy tay đem mật vào miệng, thì mắt người sáng ra.

28Có người trong dân chúng cất tiếng nói rằng: Cha ông có thề cùng dân chúng rằng: Đáng rủa sả người nào ăn vật thực gì trong ngày nay. Vả, dân sự đều bị mệt đuối.

29Giô-na-than đáp rằng: Cha ta làm rối cho xứ, hãy xem mắt ta đã sáng dường nào, vì cớ nếm chút mật nầy!

30è! chớ chi ngày nay dân sự đã ăn vật chiếm được của thù nghịch, thì sự thua bại dân Phi-li-tin đã lớn hơn biết bao!

31Vậy ngày đó, dân Y-sơ-ra-ên đánh bại dân Phi-li-tin từ Mích-ma cho đến A-gia-lôn.

32Dân sự bị mệt đuối lắm, bèn xông vào của cướp, bắt chiên, bò, bò con, giết đi trên đất, rồi ăn thịt lộn với huyết.

33Có người đến nói cùng Sau-lơ rằng: Kìa, dân sự phạm tội cùng Đức Giê-hô-va, mà ăn thịt lộn với huyết. Người đáp: Aáy là một sự lỗi đạo! Hãy lập tức lăn một hòn đá lớn đến gần ta.

34Lại tiếp rằng: Hãy đi khắp cơ binh rao rằng mỗi người phải dẫn đến ta chiên và bò mình, và giết đi tại đây. Rồi các ngươi sẽ ăn thịt nó; như vậy các người không phạm tội cùng Đức Giê-hô-va mà ăn thịt lộn với huyết. Thế thì, trong đêm đó, mỗi người trong chúng dẫn súc vật mình có dưới tay, và giết nó trên hòn đá.

35Sau-lơ bèn lập một bàn thờ cho Đức Giê-hô-va; ấy là bàn thờ thứ nhất mà người lập cho Đức Giê-hô-va.

36Đoạn, Sau-lơ nói: Chúng ta hãy đi xuống đuổi theo dân Phi-li-tin trong khi ban đêm, cướp phá chúng nó cho đến sáng sớm, và chớ để sống một ai. Chúng thưa rằng: Hãy làm mọi điều vua lấy làm phải. Thầy tế lễ bèn nói: Chúng ta hãy đến gần Đức Chúa Trời.

37Sau-lơ cầu vấn Đức Chúa Trời rằng: Tôi phải nên xuống đuổi theo dân Phi-li-tin chăng? Ngài sẽ phó chúng nó vào tay Y-sơ-ra-ên chăng? Song lần nầy Đức Chúa Trời chẳng đáp lại lời gì hết.

38Đoạn, Sau-lơ bảo rằng: Hỡi các quan trưởng của dân sự, hết thảy hãy đến gần đây, xét tìm tội lỗi đã phạm trong ngày nay là sao.

39Ta chỉ Đức Giê-hô-va hằng sống, là Đấng giải cứu Y-sơ-ra-ên, mà thề rằng kẻ đã phạm tội, dẫu chính là Giô-na-than, con trai ta, cũng phải chết đi! Trong cả dân sự chẳng có ai đáp lời người.

40Người bèn nói cùng cả Y-sơ-ra-ên rằng: Các ngươi hãy đứng bên này; ta và Giô-na-than, con trai ta, sẽ đứng bên kia. Dân sự thưa rằng: Hãy làm điều vua lấy làm phải.

41Sau-lơ thưa cùng Đức Giê-hô-va rằng: Oâi Đức Chúa Trời của Y-sơ-ra-ên! xin hãy tỏ ra sự thật. Giô-na-than và Sau-lơ bị chỉ ra, còn dân sự thì vô can.

42Sau-lơ nói: Hãy bắt thăm cho ta và Giô-na-than, con trai ta.

43Giô-na-than bị chỉ ra. Sau-lơ nói cùng Giô-na-than rằng: Hãy tỏ cho ta biết điều ngươi đã làm. Giô-na-than thú thật rằng: Tôi có dùng đầu gậy tôi cầm nơi tay mà nếm chút mật ong; nầy tôi đây phải chết.

44Sau-lơ nói: Hỡi Giô-na-than, nếu ngươi không chết, nguyện Đức Giê-hô-va giáng họa rất nặng trên ta!

45Nhưng dân sự đáp cùng Sau-lơ rằng: Uûa! Giô-na-than là người đã làm cho Y-sơ-ra-ên được đại thắng dường kia, phải chết sao? Điều đó chẳng nên! Chúng tôi chỉ sanh mạng của Đức Giê-hô-va mà thề rằng một sợi tóc trên đầu người sẽ chẳng rụng xuống đất; vì người ở cùng Đức Chúa Trời mà được thắng ngày nay. Như vậy, dân sự giải cứu Giô-na-than, và người khỏi bị xử tử.

46Đoạn, Sau-lơ trở về, chẳng đuổi theo dân Phi-li-tin nữa; và dân Phi-li-tin đều trở về trong xứ mình.

47Sau khi Sau-lơ đã cầm quyền nước Y-sơ-ra-ên, thì người giao chiến cùng kẻ thù nghịch mình tứ phía, tức cùng Mô-áp, Am-môn, Ê-đôm, các vua Xô-ba, và cùng dân Phi-li-tin; hễ người cử binh đến đâu, thì báo thù được đến đó.

48Người tụ tập quân lính, đánh dân A-ma-léc, và giải cứu Y-sơ-ra-ên khỏi tay những kẻ cướp phá họ.

49Các con trai của Sau-lơ là Giô-na-than, Gi-sê-vi, và Manh-ki-sua, người cũng có hai con gái; lớn, tên là Mê-ráp; nhỏ, tên là Mi-canh;

50vợ của Sau-lơ tên là A-hi-nô-am, con gái của A-hi-mát. Tổng binh của đạo binh người là Aùp-ne, con trai của Nê-rơ, chú của Sau-lơ,

51Kích, cha của Sau-lơ và Nê-rơ, cha của Aùp-ne, là con trai của A-bi-ên.

52Trọn đời Sau-lơ có sự tranh chiến dữ dội cùng dân Phi-li-tin; hễ khi Sau-lơ thấy người mạnh mẽ và bạo dạn, thì chiêu mộ người theo mình.
