Luke

1Seeing that many did take in hand to set in order a narration of the matters that have been fully assured among us,

2as they did deliver to us, who from the beginning became eye-witnesses, and officers of the Word, —

3it seemed good also to me, having followed from the first after all things exactly, to write to thee in order, most noble Theophilus,

4that thou mayest know the certainty of the things wherein thou wast instructed.

5There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judea, a certain priest, by name Zacharias, of the course of Abijah, and his wife of the daughters of Aaron, and her name Elisabeth;

6and they were both righteous before God, going on in all the commands and righteousnesses of the Lord blameless,

7and they had no child, because that Elisabeth was barren, and both were advanced in their days.

8And it came to pass, in his acting as priest, in the order of his course before God,

9according to the custom of the priesthood, his lot was to make perfume, having gone into the sanctuary of the Lord,

10and all the multitude of the people were praying without, at the hour of the perfume.

11And there appeared to him a messenger of the Lord standing on the right side of the altar of the perfume,

12and Zacharias, having seen, was troubled, and fear fell on him;

13and the messenger said unto him, 'Fear not, Zacharias, for thy supplication was heard, and thy wife Elisabeth shall bear a son to thee, and thou shalt call his name John,

14and there shall be joy to thee, and gladness, and many at his birth shall joy,

15for he shall be great before the Lord, and wine and strong drink he may not drink, and of the Holy Spirit he shall be full, even from his mother's womb;

16and many of the sons of Israel he shall turn to the Lord their God,

17and he shall go before Him, in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn hearts of fathers unto children, and disobedient ones to the wisdom of righteous ones, to make ready for the Lord, a people prepared.'

18And Zacharias said unto the messenger, 'Whereby shall I know this? for I am aged, and my wife is advanced in her days?'

19And the messenger answering said to him, 'I am Gabriel, who have been standing near before God, and I was sent to speak unto thee, and to proclaim these good news to thee,

20and lo, thou shalt be silent, and not able to speak, till the day that these things shall come to pass, because thou didst not believe my words, that shall be fulfilled in their season.'

21And the people were waiting for Zacharias, and wondering at his tarrying in the sanctuary,

22and having come out, he was not able to speak to them, and they perceived that a vision he had seen in the sanctuary, and he was beckoning to them, and did remain dumb.

23And it came to pass, when the days of his service were fulfilled, he went away to his house,

24and after those days, his wife Elisabeth conceived, and hid herself five months, saying —

25'Thus hath the Lord done to me, in days in which He looked upon [me], to take away my reproach among men.'

26And in the sixth month was the messenger Gabriel sent by God, to a city of Galilee, the name of which [is] Nazareth,

27to a virgin, betrothed to a man, whose name [is] Joseph, of the house of David, and the name of the virgin [is] Mary.

28And the messenger having come in unto her, said, 'Hail, favoured one, the Lord [is] with thee; blessed [art] thou among women;'

29and she, having seen, was troubled at his word, and was reasoning of what kind this salutation may be.

30And the messenger said to her, 'Fear not, Mary, for thou hast found favour with God;

31and lo, thou shalt conceive in the womb, and shalt bring forth a son, and call his name Jesus;

32he shall be great, and Son of the Highest he shall be called, and the Lord God shall give him the throne of David his father,

33and he shall reign over the house of Jacob to the ages; and of his reign there shall be no end.'

34And Mary said unto the messenger, 'How shall this be, seeing a husband I do not know?'

35And the messenger answering said to her, 'The Holy Spirit shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee, therefore also the holy-begotten thing shall be called Son of God;

36and lo, Elisabeth, thy kinswoman, she also hath conceived a son in her old age, and this is the sixth month to her who was called barren;

37because nothing shall be impossible with God.'

38And Mary said, 'Lo, the maid-servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to thy saying,' and the messenger went away from her.

39And Mary having arisen in those days, went to the hill-country, with haste, to a city of Judea,

40and entered into the house of Zacharias, and saluted Elisabeth.

41And it came to pass, when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe did leap in her womb; and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit,

42and spake out with a loud voice, and said, 'Blessed [art] thou among women, and blessed [is] the fruit of thy womb;

43and whence [is] this to me, that the mother of my Lord might come unto me?

44for, lo, when the voice of thy salutation came to my ears, leap in gladness did the babe in my womb;

45and happy [is] she who did believe, for there shall be a completion to the things spoken to her from the Lord.'

46And Mary said, 'My soul doth magnify the Lord,

47And my spirit was glad on God my Saviour,

48Because He looked on the lowliness of His maid-servant, For, lo, henceforth call me happy shall all the generations,

49For He who is mighty did to me great things, And holy [is] His name,

50And His kindness [is] to generations of generations, To those fearing Him,

51He did powerfully with His arm, He scattered abroad the proud in the thought of their heart,

52He brought down the mighty from thrones, And He exalted the lowly,

53The hungry He did fill with good, And the rich He sent away empty,

54He received again Israel His servant, To remember kindness,

55As He spake unto our fathers, To Abraham and to his seed — to the age.'

56And Mary remained with her about three months, and turned back to her house.

57And to Elisabeth was the time fulfilled for her bringing forth, and she bare a son,

58and the neighbours and her kindred heard that the Lord was making His kindness great with her, and they were rejoicing with her.

59And it came to pass, on the eighth day, they came to circumcise the child, and they were calling him by the name of his father, Zacharias,

60and his mother answering said, 'No, but he shall be called John.'

61And they said unto her — 'There is none among thy kindred who is called by this name,'

62and they were making signs to his father, what he would wish him to be called,

63and having asked for a tablet, he wrote, saying, 'John is his name;' and they did all wonder;

64and his mouth was opened presently, and his tongue, and he was speaking, praising God.

65And fear came upon all those dwelling around them, and in all the hill-country of Judea were all these sayings spoken of,

66and all who heard did lay them up in their hearts, saying, 'What then shall this child be?' and the hand of the Lord was with him.

67And Zacharias his father was filled with the Holy Spirit, and did prophesy, saying,

68'Blessed [is] the Lord, the God of Israel, Because He did look upon, And wrought redemption for His people,

69And did raise an horn of salvation to us, In the house of David His servant,

70As He spake by the mouth of His holy prophets, Which have been from the age;

71Salvation from our enemies, And out of the hand of all hating us,

72To do kindness with our fathers, And to be mindful of His holy covenant,

73An oath that He sware to Abraham our father,

74To give to us, without fear, Out of the hand of our enemies having been delivered,

75To serve Him, in holiness and righteousness Before Him, all the days of our life.

76And thou, child, Prophet of the Highest Shalt thou be called; For thou shalt go before the face of the Lord, To prepare His ways.

77To give knowledge of salvation to His people In remission of their sins,

78Through the tender mercies of our God, In which the rising from on high did look upon us,

79To give light to those sitting in darkness and death-shade, To guide our feet to a way of peace.'

80And the child grew, and was strengthened in spirit, and he was in the deserts till the day of his shewing unto Israel.

1Thưa ngài Thê-ô-phi-lô đáng kính, có nhiều người đã ra công soạn bản tường thuật những sự việc đã được thực hiện giữa chúng ta.

2Họ viết theo những điều mà các người đã được chứng kiến ngay từ đầu và đã phục vụ lời Chúa truyền lại cho chúng ta.

3Tôi cũng vậy, sau khi đã cẩn thận tra cứu đầu đuôi mọi sự, thì thiết tưởng cũng nên tuần tự viết ra để kính tặng ngài,

4mong ngài sẽ nhận thức được rằng giáo huấn ngài đã học hỏi thật là vững chắc.

5Thời vua Hê-rô-đê cai trị miền Giu-đê, có một vị tư tế thuộc nhóm A-vi-gia, tên là Da-ca-ri-a ; vợ ông là Ê-li-sa-bét cũng thuộc dòng tộc tư tế A-ha-ron.

6Cả hai ông bà đều là người công chính trước mặt Thiên Chúa, sống đúng theo mọi điều răn và mệnh lệnh của Chúa, không ai chê trách được điều gì.

7Nhưng họ lại không có con, vì bà Ê-li-sa-bét là người hiếm hoi. Vả lại, cả hai đều đã cao niên.

8Sau đây là chuyện xảy ra trong lúc ông đang lo việc tế tự trước nhan Thiên Chúa khi đến phiên của nhóm ông :

9Trong cuộc bắt thăm thường lệ của hàng tư tế, ông đã trúng thăm được vào dâng hương trong Đền Thờ của Đức Chúa.

10Trong giờ dâng hương đó, toàn thể dân chúng cầu nguyện ở bên ngoài.

11Bỗng một sứ thần của Chúa hiện ra với ông, đứng bên phải hương án.

12Thấy vậy, ông Da-ca-ri-a bối rối, và nỗi sợ hãi ập xuống trên ông.

13Nhưng sứ thần bảo ông : “Này ông Da-ca-ri-a, đừng sợ, vì Thiên Chúa đã nhậm lời ông cầu xin : bà Ê-li-sa-bét vợ ông sẽ sinh cho ông một đứa con trai, và ông phải đặt tên cho con là Gio-an.

14Ông sẽ được vui mừng hớn hở, và nhiều người cũng được hỷ hoan ngày con trẻ chào đời.

15Vì em bé sẽ nên cao cả trước mặt Chúa. Rượu lạt rượu nồng em sẽ đều không uống. Và ngay khi còn trong lòng mẹ, em đã đầy Thánh Thần.

16Em sẽ đưa nhiều con cái Ít-ra-en về với Đức Chúa là Thiên Chúa của họ.

17Được đầy thần khí và quyền năng của ngôn sứ Ê-li-a, *em sẽ đi trước mặt Chúa, để làm cho lòng cha ông quay về với con cháu*, để làm cho tâm tư kẻ ngỗ nghịch lại hướng về nẻo chính đường ngay, và chuẩn bị một dân sẵn sàng đón Chúa.”

18Ông Da-ca-ri-a thưa với sứ thần : “*Dựa vào đâu mà tôi biết được điều ấy ?* Vì tôi đã già, và nhà tôi cũng đã lớn tuổi.”

19Sứ thần đáp : “Tôi là Gáp-ri-en, hằng đứng chầu trước mặt Thiên Chúa, tôi được sai đến nói với ông và loan báo tin mừng ấy cho ông.

20Và này đây ông sẽ bị câm, không nói được, cho đến ngày các điều ấy xảy ra, bởi vì ông đã không tin lời tôi, là những lời sẽ được ứng nghiệm đúng thời đúng buổi.”

21Dân chúng đợi ông Da-ca-ri-a, và lấy làm lạ sao ông ở lại trong cung thánh lâu như thế.

22Lúc đi ra, ông không nói với họ được, và dân chúng biết là ông đã thấy một thị kiến trong cung thánh. Còn ông, ông chỉ làm hiệu cho họ và vẫn bị câm.

23Khi thời gian phục vụ ở Đền Thờ đã mãn, ông trở về nhà.

24Ít lâu sau, bà Ê-li-sa-bét vợ ông có thai, bà ẩn mình năm tháng.

25Bà tự nhủ : “Chúa đã làm cho tôi như thế đó, khi Người thương cất nỗi hổ nhục tôi phải chịu trước mặt người đời.”

26Bà Ê-li-sa-bét có thai được sáu tháng, thì Thiên Chúa sai sứ thần Gáp-ri-en đến một thành miền Ga-li-lê, gọi là Na-da-rét,

27gặp một trinh nữ đã thành hôn với một người tên là Giu-se, thuộc dòng dõi vua Đa-vít. Trinh nữ ấy tên là Ma-ri-a.

28Sứ thần vào nhà trinh nữ và nói : “Mừng vui lên, hỡi Đấng đầy ân sủng, Đức Chúa ở cùng bà.”

29Nghe lời ấy, bà rất bối rối, và tự hỏi lời chào như vậy có nghĩa gì.

30Sứ thần liền nói : “Thưa bà Ma-ri-a, xin đừng sợ, vì bà đẹp lòng Thiên Chúa.

31Và này đây bà sẽ thụ thai, sinh hạ một con trai, và đặt tên là Giê-su.

32Người sẽ nên cao cả, và sẽ được gọi là Con Đấng Tối Cao. Đức Chúa là Thiên Chúa sẽ ban cho Người ngai vàng vua Đa-vít, tổ tiên Người.

33Người sẽ trị vì nhà Gia-cóp đến muôn đời, và triều đại của Người sẽ vô cùng vô tận.”

34Bà Ma-ri-a thưa với sứ thần : “Việc ấy sẽ xảy ra cách nào, vì tôi không biết đến việc vợ chồng !”

35Sứ thần đáp : “Thánh Thần sẽ ngự xuống trên bà, và quyền năng Đấng Tối Cao sẽ rợp bóng trên bà ; vì thế, Đấng Thánh sắp sinh ra sẽ được gọi là Con Thiên Chúa.

36Kìa bà Ê-li-sa-bét, người họ hàng với bà, tuy già rồi, mà cũng đang cưu mang một người con trai : bà ấy vẫn bị mang tiếng là hiếm hoi, mà nay đã có thai được sáu tháng,

37vì *đối với Thiên Chúa, không có gì là không thể làm được.*”

38Bấy giờ bà Ma-ri-a nói : “Vâng, tôi đây là nữ tỳ của Chúa, xin Chúa cứ làm cho tôi như lời sứ thần nói.” Rồi sứ thần từ biệt ra đi.

39Hồi ấy, bà Ma-ri-a vội vã lên đường, đến miền núi, vào một thành thuộc chi tộc Giu-đa.

40Bà vào nhà ông Da-ca-ri-a và chào hỏi bà Ê-li-sa-bét.

41Bà Ê-li-sa-bét vừa nghe tiếng bà Ma-ri-a chào, thì đứa con trong bụng nhảy lên, và bà được đầy tràn Thánh Thần,

42liền kêu lớn tiếng và nói rằng : “Em được chúc phúc hơn mọi người phụ nữ, và người con em đang cưu mang cũng được chúc phúc.

43Bởi đâu tôi được Thân Mẫu Chúa tôi đến với tôi thế này ?

44Vì này đây, tai tôi vừa nghe tiếng em chào, thì đứa con trong bụng đã nhảy lên vui sướng.

45Em thật có phúc, vì đã tin rằng Chúa sẽ thực hiện những gì Người đã nói với em.”

46“Linh hồn tôi ngợi khen Đức Chúa,

47*vì Thiên Chúa, Đấng cứu độ tôi.*

48sẽ khen tôi diễm phúc.

49*danh Người thật chí thánh chí tôn* !

50*những ai kính sợ Người.*

51dẹp tan phường lòng trí kiêu căng.

52*Người nâng cao mọi kẻ khiêm nhường.*

53người giàu có, lại đuổi về tay trắng.

54*Chúa độ trì Ít-ra-en, tôi tớ của Người,*

55và cho con cháu đến muôn đời.”

56Bà Ma-ri-a ở lại với bà Ê-li-sa-bét độ ba tháng, rồi trở về nhà.

57Tới ngày mãn nguyệt khai hoa, bà Ê-li-sa-bét sinh hạ một con trai.

58Nghe biết Chúa đã quá thương bà như vậy, láng giềng và thân thích đều chia vui với bà.

59Khi con trẻ được tám ngày, họ đến làm phép cắt bì, và tính lấy tên cha là Da-ca-ri-a mà đặt cho em.

60Nhưng bà mẹ lên tiếng nói : “Không, phải đặt tên cháu là Gio-an.”

61Họ bảo bà : “Trong họ hàng của bà, chẳng ai có tên như vậy cả.”

62Rồi họ làm hiệu hỏi người cha, xem ông muốn đặt tên cho em bé là gì.

63Ông xin một tấm bảng nhỏ và viết : “Tên cháu là Gio-an.” Ai nấy đều bỡ ngỡ.

64Ngay lúc ấy, miệng lưỡi ông lại mở ra, ông nói được, và chúc tụng Thiên Chúa.

65Láng giềng ai nấy đều kinh sợ. Và các sự việc ấy được đồn ra khắp miền núi Giu-đê.

66Ai nghe cũng để tâm suy nghĩ và tự hỏi : “Đứa trẻ này rồi ra sẽ thế nào đây ?” Và quả thật, có bàn tay Chúa phù hộ em.

67Bấy giờ, người cha của em, tức là ông Da-ca-ri-a, được đầy Thánh Thần, liền nói tiên tri rằng :

68đã viếng thăm *cứu chuộc dân Người.*

69Vị Cứu Tinh quyền thế để giúp ta,

70mà phán hứa tự ngàn xưa :

71*thoát tay* mọi *kẻ hằng ghen ghét* ;

72và *nhớ lại* lời xưa *giao ước* ;

73rằng sẽ giải phóng ta khỏi tay địch thù,

74và cho ta chẳng còn sợ hãi,

75mà phụng thờ Người suốt cả đời ta.

76*mở lối cho Người*,

77là tha cho họ hết mọi tội khiên.

78tự chốn cao vời viếng thăm ta,

79dẫn ta bước vào đường nẻo *bình an.”*

80Cậu bé càng lớn lên thì tinh thần càng vững mạnh. Cậu sống trong hoang địa cho đến ngày ra mắt dân Ít-ra-en.
