1And it cometh to pass afterwards, that Absalom prepareth for himself a chariot, and horses, and fifty men are running before him;

2and Absalom hath risen early, and stood by the side of the way of the gate, and it cometh to pass, every man who hath a pleading to come unto the king for judgment, that Absalom calleth unto him, and saith, 'Of what city [art] thou?' and he saith, 'Of one of the tribes of Israel [is] thy servant.'

3And Absalom saith unto him, 'See, thy matters [are] good and straightforward — and there is none hearkening to thee from the king.'

4And Absalom saith, 'Who doth make me a judge in the land, that unto me doth come every man who hath a plea and judgment? — then I have declared him righteous.'

5And it hath come to pass, in the drawing nearing of any one to bow himself to him, that he hath put forth his hand, and laid hold on him, and given a kiss to him;

6and Absalom doth according to this thing to all Israel who come in for judgment unto the king, and Absalom stealeth the heart of the men of Israel.

7And it cometh to pass, at the end of forty years, that Absalom saith unto the king, 'Let me go, I pray thee, and I complete my vow, that I vowed to Jehovah in Hebron,

8for a vow hath thy servant vowed in my dwelling in Geshur, in Aram, saying, If Jehovah doth certainly bring me back to Jerusalem, then I have served Jehovah.'

9And the king saith to him, 'Go in peace;' and he riseth and goeth to Hebron,

10and Absalom sendeth spies through all the tribes of Israel, saying, 'At your hearing the voice of the trumpet, then ye have said, Absalom hath reigned in Hebron.'

11And with Absalom have gone two hundred men, out of Jerusalem, invited ones, and they are going in their simplicity, and have not known anything;

12and Absalom sendeth Ahithophel the Gilonite, a counsellor of David, out of his city, out of Gilo, in his sacrificing sacrifices; and the conspiracy is strong, and the people are going and increasing with Absalom.

13And he who is declaring tidings cometh in unto David, saying, 'The heart of the men of Israel hath been after Absalom.'

14And David saith to all his servants who [are] with him in Jerusalem, 'Rise, and we flee, for we have no escape from the face of Absalom; haste to go, lest he hasten, and have overtaken us, and forced on us evil, and smitten the city by the mouth of the sword.'

15And the servants of the king say unto the king, 'According to all that my lord the king chooseth — lo, thy servants [do].'

16And the king goeth out, and all his household at his feet, and the king leaveth ten women — concubines — to keep the house.

17And the king goeth out, and all the people at his feet, and they stand still at the farthest off house.

18And all his servants are passing on at his side, and all the Cherethite, and all the Pelethite, and all the Gittites, six hundred men who came at his feet from Gath, are passing on at the front of the king.

19And the king saith unto Ittai the Gittite, 'Why dost thou go — thou also — with us? turn back — and abide with the king, for thou [art] a stranger, and also an exile thou — to thy place.

20Yesterday [is] thy coming in, and to-day I move thee to go with us, and I am going on that which I am going! — turn back, and take back thy brethren with thee, — kindness and truth.'

21And Ittai answereth the king and saith, 'Jehovah liveth, and my lord the king liveth, surely in the place where my lord the king is — if for death, if for life, surely there is thy servant.'

22And David saith unto Ittai, 'Go and pass over;' and Ittai the Gittite passeth over, and all his men, and all the infants who [are] with him.

23And all the land are weeping — a great voice, and all the people are passing over; and the king is passing over through the brook Kidron, and all the people are passing over on the front of the way of the wilderness;

24and lo, also Zadok, and all the Levites with him, bearing the ark of the covenant of God, and they make the ark of God firm, and Abiathar goeth up, till the completion of all the people to pass over out of the city.

25And the king saith to Zadok, 'Take back the ark of God to the city; if I find grace in the eyes of Jehovah, then He hath brought me back, and shewn me it and His habitation;

26and if thus He say, I have not delighted in thee; here [am] I, He doth to me as [is] good in His eyes.'

27And the king saith unto Zadok the priest, 'Art thou a seer? turn back to the city in peace, and Ahimaaz thy son, and Jonathan son of Abiathar, your two sons with you;

28see ye, I am tarrying in the plains of the wilderness till the coming in of a word from you to declare to me.'

29And Zadok taketh back — and Abiathar — the ark of God to Jerusalem, and they abide there.

30And David is going up in the ascent of the olives, going up and weeping, and he hath the head covered, and he is going barefooted, and all the people who [are] with him have covered each his head, and have gone up, going up and weeping;

31and David declared, saying, 'Ahithophel [is] among the conspirators with Absalom;' and David saith, 'Make foolish, I pray Thee, the counsel of Ahithophel, O Jehovah.'

32And it cometh to pass, David hath come unto the top, where he boweth himself to God, and lo, to meet him [is] Hushai the Archite, his coat rent, and earth on his head;

33and David saith to him, 'If thou hast passed on with me then thou hast been on me for a burden,

34and if to the city thou dost turn back, and hast said to Absalom, Thy servant I am, O king; servant of thy father I [am] also hitherto, and now, I [am] also thy servant; then thou hast made void for me the counsel of Ahithophel;

35and are there not with thee there Zadok and Abiathar the priests? and it hath been, the whole of the matter that thou hearest from the house of the king thou dost declare to Zadok and to Abiathar the priests.

36Lo, there with them [are] their two sons, Ahimaaz to Zadok, and Jonathan to Abiathar, and ye have sent by their hand unto me anything that ye hear.'

37And Hushai, David's friend, cometh in to the city, and Absalom cometh in to Jerusalem.

3Áp-sa-lôm bảo người ấy : “Ông xem : vụ kiện của ông đúng và hợp lý, nhưng không có ai thay mặt đức vua để nghe ông đâu.”

4Áp-sa-lôm nói : “Phải chi có ai đặt tôi làm thẩm phán trong xứ này ! Tất cả những người có kiện cáo và cần xét xử, sẽ đến với tôi, và tôi sẽ xử công minh cho họ.”

5Khi có người đến lạy y thì y đưa tay ra, giữ lấy người ấy mà hôn.

6Áp-sa-lôm làm như thế với mọi người Ít-ra-en đến xin vua xét xử. Và Áp-sa-lôm đã mua chuộc lòng người Ít-ra-en.

7Sau bốn năm, Áp-sa-lôm thưa với vua : “Xin cho phép con đi Khép-rôn để con giữ trọn lời đã khấn hứa với ĐỨC CHÚA,

8vì khi còn ở Gơ-sua miền A-ram, tôi tớ ngài đã có lời khấn hứa rằng : ‘Nếu quả thật ĐỨC CHÚA cho con trở về Giê-ru-sa-lem, thì con sẽ thờ phượng ĐỨC CHÚA.’”

9Vua bảo y : “Con đi bình an.” Y lên đường đi Khép-rôn.

10Áp-sa-lôm sai người bí mật đến tất cả các chi tộc Ít-ra-en mà nói : “Khi anh em nghe thấy tiếng tù và thì hãy nói : Áp-sa-lôm đã lên ngôi vua tại Khép-rôn !”

11Cùng với Áp-sa-lôm có hai trăm người đi từ Giê-ru-sa-lem ; họ là những khách được mời, vô tình mà đến, không hay biết gì về chuyện đó.

12Khi dâng các hy lễ, Áp-sa-lôm sai người đi tìm A-khi-thô-phen, người thành Ghi-lô, cố vấn của vua Đa-vít, và triệu y về từ thành của y là Ghi-lô. Bọn mưu phản thêm mạnh và dân theo Áp-sa-lôm ngày càng đông.

13Người đưa tin đến nói với vua Đa-vít : “Lòng người Ít-ra-en đã theo Áp-sa-lôm.”

14Vua Đa-vít bảo toàn thể triều thần ở với vua tại Giê-ru-sa-lem : “Đứng lên ! Chúng ta chạy trốn đi, vì chúng ta sẽ không thoát được Áp-sa-lôm. Đi cho mau, kẻo chẳng mấy chốc nó đuổi kịp chúng ta, giáng tai hoạ xuống chúng ta và dùng lưỡi gươm giết dân thành.”

15Triều thần thưa với vua : “Đức vua là chúa thượng chọn cái gì, các tôi tớ ngài đây xin sẵn sàng !”

16Vua đi ra và cả nhà theo chân, nhưng vua để lại mười người tỳ thiếp để giữ nhà.

17Vua đi ra và toàn dân theo chân, họ dừng lại ở ngôi nhà cuối cùng.

18Toàn thể triều thần đi qua, sát bên cạnh vua, tất cả quân Cơ-rê-thi, tất cả quân Pơ-lê-thi và tất cả quân Gát –tức là sáu trăm người đã theo chân vua từ Gát đến– đi qua trước mặt vua.

19Vua nói với ông Ít-tai, người Gát : “Tại sao cả ngươi nữa cũng đi với chúng ta ? Hãy trở về và ở với nhà vua, bởi vì ngươi là người nước ngoài, ngươi còn bỏ quê hương mà sống lưu vong.

20Ngươi mới đến hôm qua, mà hôm nay ta lại bắt ngươi phải đi lang thang với chúng ta, trong khi ta đi mà chẳng biết đi đâu ! Hãy trở về và đưa các anh em ngươi trở về cùng với ngươi. Xin ĐỨC CHÚA lấy tình thương và lòng thành tín mà đối xử với ngươi.”

21Ông Ít-tai trả lời vua rằng : “Có ĐỨC CHÚA hằng sống và có đức vua là chúa thượng tôi đang sống, tôi thề : đức vua là chúa thượng tôi ở đâu, thì dù sống dù chết, tôi tớ ngài cũng ở đó !”

22Vua Đa-vít bảo ông Ít-tai : “Hãy đi qua !” Ông Ít-tai, người Gát, đã đi qua cùng với tất cả những người của ông và mọi trẻ con theo ông.

23Cả xứ khóc to tiếng và toàn dân đi qua. Vua đi qua thung lũng Kít-rôn, và toàn dân đi qua phía trước con đường vào sa mạc.

24Và có cả ông Xa-đốc, và cùng với ông, có tất cả các thầy Lê-vi khiêng Hòm Bia Giao Ước của Thiên Chúa. Họ đặt Hòm Bia Thiên Chúa xuống, và ông Ép-gia-tha tiến lên, cho đến khi toàn dân ra khỏi thành đã đi qua hết.

25Vua bảo ông Xa-đốc : “Hãy đưa Hòm Bia Thiên Chúa về thành. Nếu ta được đẹp lòng ĐỨC CHÚA, thì Người sẽ đưa ta trở về và cho ta thấy Hòm Bia và nơi Người ngự.

26Nhưng nếu Người nói là Người không thương ta nữa, thì này ta đây, Người cứ làm cho ta điều Người cho là tốt.”

27Vua nói với tư tế Xa-đốc : “Ngươi thấy không ? Cứ trở về thành bình an. Có hai con trai của các ngươi ở với các ngươi : A-khi-ma-át, con của ngươi, và Giô-na-than, con của Ép-gia-tha.

28Các ngươi xem : ta sẽ nán lại ở các chỗ qua sông vào sa mạc, chờ khi có lời các ngươi gửi đến báo tin cho ta.”

30Vua Đa-vít lên dốc Cây Ô-liu, vừa lên vừa khóc, đầu trùm khăn, chân đi đất, và toàn dân đi với vua ai cũng đầu trùm khăn, vừa lên vừa khóc.

31Người ta báo tin cho vua Đa-vít rằng : “A-khi-thô-phen ở trong đám những người âm mưu cùng với Áp-sa-lôm.” Vua Đa-vít nói : “Lạy ĐỨC CHÚA, xin làm cho lời bàn của A-khi-thô-phen ra vô hiệu !”

32Khi vua Đa-vít lên tới đỉnh, nơi người ta thờ lạy Thiên Chúa, thì này ông Khu-sai, người Ác-ki, đón gặp vua, áo chùng ông xé rách, đầu thì rắc đất.

33Vua Đa-vít nói với ông : “Nếu ông qua đây với ta, thì ông sẽ nên gánh nặng cho ta.

34Nhưng nếu ông trở về thành và nói với Áp-sa-lôm : ‘Thưa đức vua, tôi là tôi tớ ngài ; trước đây tôi là tôi tớ cha ngài, còn bây giờ tôi là tôi tớ ngài’, thì ông sẽ phá cho ta lời bàn của A-khi-thô-phen.

35Nào các tư tế Xa-đốc và Ép-gia-tha sẽ chẳng có ở đó với ông sao ? Tất cả những gì nghe được từ đền vua, ông sẽ báo cho các tư tế Xa-đốc và Ép-gia-tha.

36Họ có hai người con trai ở đó với họ là A-khi-ma-át, con Xa-đốc và Giô-na-than, con Ép-gia-tha. Các ông sẽ nhờ chúng báo cho ta mọi điều các ông nghe được.”

37Ông Khu-sai, bạn vua Đa-vít, vào thành khi Áp-sa-lôm đến Giê-ru-sa-lem.
