Tobit

1When they had finished their supper, they brought Tobias in to her.

2But as he went, he remembered the words of Raphael, and took the ashes of the incense, and put the heart and the liver of the fish on them, and made smoke with them.

3When the demon smelled that smell, it fled into the uppermost parts of Egypt, and the angel bound him.

4But after they were both shut in together, Tobias rose up from the bed, and said, “Sister, arise, and let’s pray that the Lord may have mercy on us.”

5And Tobias began to say, “Blessed are you, O God of our fathers, and blessed is your holy and glorious name forever. Let the heavens bless you, and all your creatures.

6You made Adam, and gave him Eve his wife for a helper and support. From them came the seed of men. You said, it is not good that the man should be alone. Let’s make him a helper like him.

7And now, O Lord, I take not this my sister for lust, but in truth. Command that I may find mercy and grow old with her.”

8She said with him, “Amen.” And they both slept that night.

9Raguel arose, and went and dug a grave,

10saying, “Lest he also should die.”

11And Raguel came into his house,

12and said to Edna his wife, “Send one of the maidservants, and let them see if he is alive. If not, we will bury him, and no man will know it.”

13So the maidservant opened the door, and went in, and found them both sleeping,

14and came out, and told them that he was alive.

15Then Raguel blessed God, saying, “Blessed are you, O God, with all pure and holy blessing! Let your saints bless you, and all your creatures! Let all your angels and your elect bless you forever!

16Blessed are you, because you have made me glad; and it has not happened to me as I suspected; but you have dealt with us according to your great mercy.

17Blessed are you, because you have had mercy on two that were the only begotten children of their parents. Show them mercy, O Lord. Fulfil their life in health with gladness and mercy.

18He commanded his servants to fill the grave.

19He kept the wedding feast for them fourteen days.

20Before the days of the wedding feast were finished, Raguel sware to him, that he should not depart till the fourteen days of the wedding feast were fulfilled;

21and that then he should take half of his goods, and go in safety to his father; and the rest, said he, when my wife and I die.

1Ăn uống xong, họ toan đi nằm. Họ đưa người thanh niên đi và dẫn vào phòng.

2Tô-bi-a nhớ lại lời của thiên sứ Ra-pha-en : cậu lấy trong túi ra gan cá cùng với tim, và đặt trên than của lư hương.

3Mùi cá đẩy lui quỷ, khiến nó chạy trốn về miền Thượng Ai-cập. Thiên sứ Ra-pha-en đến đó buộc chân và trói nó lại ngay tức khắc.

4Khi thân nhân đã ra khỏi phòng và đóng cửa lại, Tô-bi-a ngồi dậy, ra khỏi giường và nói với Xa-ra : “Đứng lên, em ! Chúng ta hãy cầu nguyện, nài xin Đức Chúa để Người xót thương và ban ơn cứu độ cho chúng ta !”

5phải chúc tụng Chúa đến muôn thuở muôn đời !

6Ta sẽ làm cho nó một người trợ giúp giống như nó.’

7cho chúng con được chung sống bên nhau đến tuổi già.”

8Rồi họ đồng thanh nói : “A-men ! A-men !”

9Sau đó, họ ngủ luôn cho đến sáng.

10Đang khi ấy, ông Ra-gu-ên trỗi dậy, gọi đầy tớ lại ; họ đi đào một cái huyệt, vì ông nói : “Nó mà chết thì chúng ta sẽ trở thành đề tài cho người ta nhục mạ và nhạo báng.”

11Khi họ đào huyệt xong, ông Ra-gu-ên trở về nhà, gọi vợ ông

12và nói : “Em hãy sai một trong mấy tớ gái, bảo nó vào xem Tô-bi-a còn sống hay đã chết, để nếu có làm sao chúng ta sẽ chôn nó và không ai biết cả.”

13Vậy họ sai tớ gái đi, thắp đèn lên và mở cửa ; người đầy tớ gái đi vào và thấy đôi vợ chồng đang nằm ngủ với nhau.

14Người đầy tớ gái ra ngoài cho hai ông bà biết Tô-bi-a còn sống và không có gì bất hạnh xảy ra.

15Mọi loài phải chúc tụng Chúa đến muôn thuở muôn đời !

16theo lòng xót thương bao la của Ngài.

17trong niềm hoan lạc và lòng xót thương !”

18Sau đó, ông bảo người nhà lấp huyệt lại trước khi trời sáng.

19Ông Ra-gu-ên bảo vợ làm thật nhiều bánh ; còn ông đi ra đàn vật dẫn hai con bò và bốn con cừu, bảo làm thịt ; rồi người ta bắt đầu chuẩn bị ăn mừng.

20Ông gọi Tô-bi-a và nói : “Trong mười bốn ngày, con không được nhúc nhích khỏi đây, nhưng phải ở lại, ăn uống trong nhà cha, và hãy làm cho lòng con gái cha được vui sướng sau ngần ấy đau khổ.

21Bao nhiêu tài sản của cha, con hãy lấy phân nửa ngay từ bây giờ và trở về với cha con bình an vô sự ; phân nửa kia sẽ thuộc về chúng con, sau khi cha và mẹ con đây qua đời. Hãy tin tưởng, hỡi con ! Cha đây là cha con và bà Ét-na là mẹ con. Bây giờ và mãi mãi cha mẹ ở bên con và em con. Hãy tin tưởng, hỡi con !”
