Proverbs

1Don’t be envious of evil men,neither desire to be with them;

2for their hearts plot violenceand their lips talk about mischief.

3Through wisdom a house is built;by understanding it is established;

4by knowledge the rooms are filledwith all rare and beautiful treasure.

5A wise man has great power.A knowledgeable man increases strength,

6for by wise guidance you wage your war,and victory is in many advisors.

7Wisdom is too high for a fool.He doesn’t open his mouth in the gate.

8One who plots to do evilwill be called a schemer.

9The schemes of folly are sin.The mocker is detested by men.

10If you falter in the time of trouble,your strength is small.

11Rescue those who are being led away to death!Indeed, hold back those who are staggering to the slaughter!

12If you say, “Behold, we didn’t know this,”doesn’t he who weighs the hearts consider it?He who keeps your soul, doesn’t he know it?Shall he not give to every man according to his work?

13My son, eat honey, for it is good,the droppings of the honeycomb, which are sweet to your taste;

14so you shall know wisdom to be to your soul.If you have found it, then there will be a reward: Your hope will not be cut off.

15Don’t lay in wait, wicked man, against the habitation of the righteous.Don’t destroy his resting place;

16for a righteous man falls seven times and rises up again,but the wicked are overthrown by calamity.

17Don’t rejoice when your enemy falls.Don’t let your heart be glad when he is overthrown,

18lest the LORD see it, and it displease him,and he turn away his wrath from him.

19Don’t fret yourself because of evildoers,neither be envious of the wicked;

20for there will be no reward to the evil man.The lamp of the wicked will be snuffed out.

21My son, fear the LORD and the king.Don’t join those who are rebellious,

22for their calamity will rise suddenly.Who knows what destruction may come from them both?

23These also are sayings of the wise: To show partiality in judgment is not good.

24He who says to the wicked, “You are righteous,”peoples will curse him, and nations will abhor him—

25but it will go well with those who convict the guilty,and a rich blessing will come on them.

26An honest answeris like a kiss on the lips.

27Prepare your work outside,and get your fields ready. Afterwards, build your house.

28Don’t be a witness against your neighbor without cause.Don’t deceive with your lips.

29Don’t say, “I will do to him as he has done to me;I will repay the man according to his work.”

30I went by the field of the sluggard,by the vineyard of the man void of understanding.

31Behold, it was all grown over with thorns.Its surface was covered with nettles, and its stone wall was broken down.

32Then I saw, and considered well.I saw, and received instruction:

33a little sleep, a little slumber,a little folding of the hands to sleep,

34so your poverty will come as a robberand your want as an armed man.

1Non portare invidia agli uomini malvagi, E non desiderare di esser con loro.

2Perciocchè il cuor loro macchina rapina, E le lor labbra parlano d'iniquità.

3La casa sarà edificata per sapienza, E sarà stabilita per prudenza.

4E per conoscimento le camere saranno ripiene Di beni preziosi e dilettevoli, d'ogni maniera.

5L'uomo savio è forte; E l'uomo intendente è possente di forza.

6Perciocchè con prudenti consigli tu farai la guerra; E la salute è posta in moltitudine di consiglieri.

7Le sapienze son troppo alte per lo stolto; Egli non aprirà la bocca nella porta.

8Chi divisa far male Sarà chiamato uomo malizioso.

9Il pensiero di stoltizia è peccato; E lo schernitore è l'abbominio degli uomini.

10Se tu ti rallenti nel giorno della distretta, Le tue forze saranno corte.

11Se tu ti rattieni dal riscuoter quelli che son tratti alla morte, E quelli che stanno in forse di essere uccisi,

12Dicendo: Ecco noi non ne sappiamo nulla; Colui che pesa i cuori non vi porrà egli mente? E il guardiano dell'anima tua non lo conoscerà egli, E non renderà egli a ciascuno secondo le sue opere?

13Figliuol mio, mangia pure del miele; Perciocchè egli è buono; E del favo del miele, che è dolce al tuo palato;

14Tal sarà la conoscenza della sapienza all'anima tua, Quando tu l'avrai trovata; e vi sarà premio, E la tua speranza non sarà troncata.

15O empio, non insidiar l'abitacolo del giusto, Non guastare il suo ricetto.

16Perciocchè il giusto cade sette volte, e si rileva; Ma gli empi ruinano nel male.

17Non rallegrarti, quando il tuo nemico sarà caduto; E quando egli sarà ruinato, il cuor tuo non ne gioisca;

18Che talora il Signore nol vegga, e che ciò non gli dispiaccia, E ch'egli non istorni l'ira sua d'addosso a lui.

19Non adirarti per li maligni; Non portare invidia agli empi.

20Perciocchè non vi sarà premio alcuno per lo malvagio; La lampana degli empi sarà spenta.

21Figliuol mio, temi il Signore e il re; Non rimescolarti co' rapportatori.

22Perciocchè in un momento sorgerà la loro calamità; E chi conosce la ruina procedente d'amendue loro?

23Queste cose ancora son per li Savi. Ei non è bene di aver riguardo alla qualità delle persone in giudicio.

24I popoli malediranno, e le nazioni esecreranno Colui che dice all'empio: Tu sei giusto.

25Ma quelli che lo gastigano saranno grati; E benedizione di bene verrà sopra loro.

26Chi risponde parole diritte Bacia le labbra.

27Ordina le tue faccende fuori, E mettile in assetto ne' tuoi campi; E poi edificherai la tua casa.

28Non essere testimonio contro al tuo prossimo senza cagione; E vorresti tu subornare alcuno con le tue labbra?

29Non dire: Come egli ha fatto a me, così farò a lui; Io renderò a costui secondo l'opera sua.

30Io passai già presso al campo del pigro, E presso alla vigna dell'uomo scemo di senno;

31Ed ecco, amendue erano tutti montati in ortiche, I cardi ne aveano coperto il disopra, E la lor chiusura di pietre era ruinata.

32Ed io, riguardando ciò, vi posi mente; Vedutolo, ne presi ammaestramento.

33Dormendo un poco, sonnecchiando un poco, Piegando un poco le mani per riposare;

34La tua povertà verrà come un viandante, E la tua inopia come uno scudiere.
