2 Chronicles

1Joash was seven years old when he began to reign, and he reigned forty years in Jerusalem. His mother’s name was Zibiah, of Beersheba.

2Joash did that which was right in the LORD’s eyes all the days of Jehoiada the priest.

3Jehoiada took for him two wives, and he became the father of sons and daughters.

4After this, Joash intended to restore the LORD’s house.

5He gathered together the priests and the Levites, and said to them, “Go out to the cities of Judah, and gather money to repair the house of your God from all Israel from year to year. See that you expedite this matter.” However the Levites didn’t do it right away.

6The king called for Jehoiada the chief, and said to him, “Why haven’t you required of the Levites to bring in the tax of Moses the servant of the LORD, and of the assembly of Israel, out of Judah and out of Jerusalem, for the Tent of the Testimony?”

7For the sons of Athaliah, that wicked woman, had broken up God’s house; and they also gave all the dedicated things of the LORD’s house to the Baals.

8So the king commanded, and they made a chest, and set it outside at the gate of the LORD’s house.

9They made a proclamation through Judah and Jerusalem, to bring in for the LORD the tax that Moses the servant of God laid on Israel in the wilderness.

10All the princes and all the people rejoiced, and brought in, and cast into the chest, until they had filled it.

11Whenever the chest was brought to the king’s officers by the hand of the Levites, and when they saw that there was much money, the king’s scribe and the chief priest’s officer came and emptied the chest, and took it, and carried it to its place again. Thus they did day by day, and gathered money in abundance.

12The king and Jehoiada gave it to those who did the work of the service of the LORD’s house. They hired masons and carpenters to restore the LORD’s house, and also those who worked iron and bronze to repair the LORD’s house.

13So the workmen worked, and the work of repairing went forward in their hands. They set up God’s house as it was designed, and strengthened it.

14When they had finished, they brought the rest of the money before the king and Jehoiada, from which were made vessels for the LORD’s house, even vessels with which to minister and to offer, including spoons and vessels of gold and silver. They offered burnt offerings in the LORD’s house continually all the days of Jehoiada.

15But Jehoiada grew old and was full of days, and he died. He was one hundred thirty years old when he died.

16They buried him in David’s city among the kings, because he had done good in Israel, and toward God and his house.

17Now after the death of Jehoiada, the princes of Judah came and bowed down to the king. Then the king listened to them.

18They abandoned the house of the LORD, the God of their fathers, and served the Asherah poles and the idols, so wrath came on Judah and Jerusalem for this their guiltiness.

19Yet he sent prophets to them to bring them again to the LORD, and they testified against them; but they would not listen.

20The Spirit of God came on Zechariah the son of Jehoiada the priest; and he stood above the people, and said to them, “God says, ‘Why do you disobey the LORD’s commandments, so that you can’t prosper? Because you have forsaken the LORD, he has also forsaken you.’”

21They conspired against him, and stoned him with stones at the commandment of the king in the court of the LORD’s house.

22Thus Joash the king didn’t remember the kindness which Jehoiada his father had done to him, but killed his son. When he died, he said, “May the LORD look at it, and repay it.”

23At the end of the year, the army of the Syrians came up against him. They came to Judah and Jerusalem, and destroyed all the princes of the people from among the people, and sent all their plunder to the king of Damascus.

24For the army of the Syrians came with a small company of men; and the LORD delivered a very great army into their hand, because they had forsaken the LORD, the God of their fathers. So they executed judgment on Joash.

25When they had departed from him (for they left him seriously wounded), his own servants conspired against him for the blood of the sons of Jehoiada the priest, and killed him on his bed, and he died. They buried him in David’s city, but they didn’t bury him in the tombs of the kings.

26These are those who conspired against him: Zabad the son of Shimeath the Ammonitess and Jehozabad the son of Shimrith the Moabitess.

27Now concerning his sons, the greatness of the burdens laid on him, and the rebuilding of God’s house, behold, they are written in the commentary of the book of the kings. Amaziah his son reigned in his place.

1Giô-át lên ngôi vua khi được bảy tuổi, và trị vì ở Giê-ru-sa-lem được bốn mươi năm. Thân mẫu vua là bà Xíp-gia, người Bơ-e Se-va.

2Suốt thời tư tế Giơ-hô-gia-đa, vua Giô-át đã làm điều ngay chính trước mắt ĐỨC CHÚA.

3Ông Giơ-hô-gia-đa cưới cho vua hai người vợ, và vua được một số con trai con gái.

4Sau đó, vua Giô-át quyết định trùng tu Đền Thờ ĐỨC CHÚA.

5Vua triệu tập các tư tế, các thầy Lê-vi và nói : “Các ngươi hãy đi khắp các thành xứ Giu-đa và quyên góp tiền bạc trong toàn dân Ít-ra-en, để hàng năm sửa sang Đền Thờ của Thiên Chúa các ngươi. Phải mau mắn tiến hành công việc !” Nhưng các thầy Lê-vi lại không mau mắn.

6Bấy giờ vua mời người đứng đầu là ông Giơ-hô-gia-đa đến và bảo : “Tại sao ông không liệu cho các thầy Lê-vi thu về phần đóng góp của Giu-đa và Giê-ru-sa-lem, như ông Mô-sê tôi tớ của ĐỨC CHÚA cũng như cộng đồng Ít-ra-en đã quy định phải nộp cho Lều Giao Ước.

7Quả thật, con mụ bất lương A-than-gia-hu và đồng bọn đã cướp bóc Đền Thờ của Thiên Chúa, lại còn lấy các đồ thánh trong Đền Thờ ĐỨC CHÚA đem dâng kính các Ba-an.”

8Vua ra lệnh làm một cái hòm và cho đặt bên ngoài cửa vào Đền Thờ ĐỨC CHÚA.

9Rồi người ta kêu gọi Giu-đa và Giê-ru-sa-lem đem nộp phần đóng góp dâng cho ĐỨC CHÚA, như ông Mô-sê, tôi tớ Thiên Chúa, đã truyền cho Ít-ra-en trong sa mạc.

10Tất cả các vị thủ lãnh cùng toàn dân hoan hỷ mang tiền đến bỏ vào hòm, cho đến khi mọi người nộp xong.

11Khi được nhiều tiền và phải mang hòm đến để vua nhờ các thầy Lê-vi kiểm soát, thì các viên ký lục của vua và uỷ viên của vị trưởng tư tế sẽ đến đổ tiền trong hòm ra ; rồi mang hòm đặt lại chỗ cũ. Ngày nào họ cũng làm như thế, và gom được rất nhiều tiền bạc.

12Vua và ông Giơ-hô-gia-đa trao số bạc đó cho các thợ phụ trách công việc tại Đền Thờ ĐỨC CHÚA. Những người này thuê thợ đá, thợ mộc để trùng tu Đền Thờ ĐỨC CHÚA, cũng như mướn thợ sắt, thợ đồng để sửa sang Đền Thờ ĐỨC CHÚA.

13Các người thợ này bắt tay vào việc, và nhờ họ, công việc được tiến triển tốt đẹp. Như thế, họ đã khôi phục tình trạng của Đền Thờ ĐỨC CHÚA và làm cho Đền Thờ thêm vững chắc.

14Suốt thời ông Giơ-hô-gia-đa, người ta thường xuyên dâng lễ toàn thiêu trong Đền Thờ ĐỨC CHÚA.

15Ông Giơ-hô-gia-đa sống đến già, tuổi thọ rất cao, rồi qua đời. Lúc chết, ông được một trăm ba mươi tuổi.

16Người ta chôn cất ông trong Thành vua Đa-vít cùng với các vua, vì ông đã làm điều tốt lành trong Ít-ra-en đối với Thiên Chúa và Đền Thờ của Người.

17Sau khi ông Giơ-hô-gia-đa qua đời, các thủ lãnh Giu-đa đến bái yết nhà vua và lúc ấy nhà vua nghe theo họ.

18Họ đã bỏ Đền Thờ của ĐỨC CHÚA là Thiên Chúa tổ tiên họ, mà phụng sự các cột thờ và các ngẫu tượng. Vì tội ấy ĐỨC CHÚA đã giáng cơn thịnh nộ xuống Giu-đa và Giê-ru-sa-lem.

19Người đã sai các ngôn sứ đến với họ, để đưa họ quay về với ĐỨC CHÚA. Các vị ấy đã khuyến cáo, nhưng họ không thèm để tai.

20Ông Da-ca-ri-a, con tư tế Giơ-hô-gia-đa, được đầy thần khí Thiên Chúa, đứng trên cao, đối diện với dân và nói : “Thiên Chúa phán thế này : ‘Tại sao các ngươi vi phạm lệnh truyền của ĐỨC CHÚA, mà chuốc lấy thất bại ? Vì các ngươi đã lìa bỏ ĐỨC CHÚA, nên ĐỨC CHÚA cũng lìa bỏ các ngươi.’”

21Họ liền toa rập chống lại ông và, theo lệnh vua, họ ném đá giết ông trong sân Đền Thờ ĐỨC CHÚA.

22Vua Giô-át không nhớ đến tình nghĩa mà ông Giơ-hô-gia-đa, thân phụ ông Da-ca-ri-a, đã dành cho mình, nên mới sát hại ông này. Lúc gần chết, ông Da-ca-ri-a kêu lên : “Xin ĐỨC CHÚA nhìn xem và báo oán cho con.”

23Đầu năm sau, quân đội A-ram tiến đánh vua Giô-át. Chúng xâm nhập Giu-đa và Giê-ru-sa-lem, tàn sát tất cả các thủ lãnh trong dân và gửi tất cả chiến lợi phẩm về cho vua Đa-mát.

24Quân A-ram đã trị tội vua Giô-át.

25Khi chúng rút lui, bỏ vua lại trong cơn đau trầm trọng, các thuộc hạ của vua đã toa rập với nhau chống lại vua, trả thù cho máu người con của tư tế Giô-hô-gia-đa. Họ giết vua ngay trên giường. Vua đã chết và được mai táng trong Thành Đa-vít, nhưng không được chôn nơi phần mộ hoàng gia.

26Đây là những người đã toa rập chống lại vua : ông Da-vát, con bà Sim-át, người Am-mon và ông Giơ-hô-da-vát, con bà Sim-rít, người Mô-áp.

27Những chuyện liên quan tới các con vua, tới các lời sấm chống lại vua, tới việc tu bổ Đền Thờ Thiên Chúa, tất cả đều được ghi chép trong phần chú giải sách Các Vua. Thái tử A-mát-gia-hu lên ngôi kế vị.
