Pho Tượng của Vua Nê-bu-cát-nết-sa

1Vua Nê-bu-cát-nết-sa cho đúc một pho tượng bằng vàng, cao hai mươi bảy mét, ngang hai mét bảy mươi, dựng trong đồng bằng Đu-ra thuộc tỉnh Ba-by-lôn.

2Vua ra lệnh triệu tập tất cả các thượng thư, quan chỉ huy, tổng trấn, quân sư, thủ quỷ, chánh án, phán quan, và các quan địa phương để cử hành lễ khánh thành pho tượng mà vua đã dựng lên.

3Đến ngày lễ khánh thành, có đông đủ các quan chức đến và đứng sắp hàng trước pho tượng Vua Nê-bu-cát-nết-sa đã dựng lên.

4Viên quan hướng dẫn lớn tiếng truyền lệnh: “Người dân các quốc gia, dân tộc,hãy nghe lệnh vua truyền!

5Khi nào các ngươi nghe kèn, sáo, đàn tam thập lục, đàn cầm, đàn hạc, tiêu, và các nhạc khí bắt đầu cử nhạc, thì tất cả phải lập tức quỳ xuống đất và thờ lạy pho tượng vua Nê-bu-cát-nết-sa đã dựng.

6Người nào bất tuân sẽ bị xử tử lập tức, bằng cách ném vào lò lửa cháy hừng.”

7Vì vậy khi vừa nghe tiếng các nhạc khí trổi lên, các cấp lãnh đạo của các quốc gia, dân tộc đều đồng loạt quỳ xuống, thờ lạy pho tượng vàng Vua Nê-bu-cát-nết-sa đã dựng lên.

8Khi ấy, các chiêm tinh gia đến tố cáo những người Giu-đa,

9họ tâu với vua Nê-bu-cát-nết-sa: “Hoàng đế vạn tuế!

10Muôn tâu, vua đã ra lệnh cho mọi người, khi nghe tiếng kèn, sáo, đàn tam thập lục, đàn cầm, đàn hạc, tiêu, và các thứ nhạc khí đều phải quỳ xuống, thờ lạy thần tượng bằng vàng,

11nếu ai bất tuân sẽ bị xử tử bằng cách ném vào lò lửa hừng.

12Muôn tâu, có mấy người Giu-đa vua đã cử lên cai trị tỉnh Ba-by-lôn, tên là Sa-đơ-rắc, Mê-sác, và A-bết-nê-gô, đã không đếm xỉa gì đến lệnh vua. Họ đã không chịu thờ lạy các thần của vua, cũng chẳng thèm quỳ lạy thần tượng vàng vua đã dựng.”

13Vua Nê-bu-cát-nết-sa nổi giận, lập tức ra lệnh điệu Sa-đơ-rắc, Mê-sác, và A-bết-nê-gô đến.

14Vừa thấy mặt họ, vua Nê-bu-cát-nết-sa tra hỏi: “Này, Sa-đơ-rắc, Mê-sác, và A-bết-nê-gô, có phải các ngươi không chịu thờ lạy các thần ta và quỳ lạy thần tượng vàng ta đã dựng không?

15Bây giờ, vừa khi nghe tiếng kèn, sáo, đàn tam thập lục, đàn cầm, đàn hạc, tiêu, và các thứ nhạc khí, các ngươi hãy quỳ xuống, thờ lạy thần tượng ta đã dựng. Nếu không tuân lệnh, các ngươi sẽ lập tức bị ném vào lò lửa hừng. Lúc ấy, thần nào có thể giải cứu các ngươi khỏi tay ta?”

16Sa-đơ-rắc, Mê-sác, và A-bết-nê-gô đáp: “Muôn tâu vua Nê-bu-cát-nết-sa, thiết tưởng không cần chúng tôi phải tự bào chữa.

17Nếu vua ném chúng tôi vào lò lửa, Đức Chúa Trời mà chúng tôi phục vụ thừa khả năng giải cứu chúng tôi khỏi lò lửa và khỏi tay vua.

18Dù Chúa quyết định không giải cứu lần này, chúng tôi cũng giữ vững ý định quyết không thờ lạy các thần của vua và pho tượng vàng vua đã dựng. Kính xin vua biết cho điều ấy.”

Lò Lửa Cháy Hực

19Vua Nê-bu-cát-nết-sa vô cùng giận dữ, biến sắc mặt, nhìn Sa-đơ-rắc, Mê-sác, và A-bết-nê-gô với thái độ đổi hẳn. Vua ra lệnh thêm nhiên liệu cho lò lửa tăng nhiệt độ gấp bảy lần,

20và thét bảo các chiến sĩ mạnh nhất trong quân đội trói chặt Sa-đơ-rắc, Mê-sác, và A-bết-nê-gô, quăng ngay xuống lò lửa cháy hực.

21Ba người ấy bị trói luôn với áo lớn,áo choàng, khăn xếp và các triều phục khác,rồi bị ném vào giữa lò lửa nóng kinh khiếp.

22Vì nhà vua ra lệnh phải thi hành tối khẩn và lò lửa lại nóng quá độ, nên trong khi hấp tấp tuân lệnh, những người lính ném ba người ấy cũng bị lửa táp mà chết.

23Sa-đơ-rắc, Mê-sác, và A-bết-nê-gô rơi xuống ngay giữa lò lửa hừng.

24Thình lình, Vua Nê-bu-cát-nết-sa đứng phắt dậy, vô cùng sửng sốt nói với các quân sư: “Có phải chúng ta chỉ ném ba người bị trói vào lò lửa hay không?” Quân sư thưa: “Muôn tâu, đúng là ba người.”

25Nhà vua nói lớn: “Đây, ta lại thấy bốn người không bị trói đi giữa lò lửa hừng, không ai bị cháy cả. Hình dáng người thứ tư giống như một vị thần linh!”

26Rồi vua Nê-bu-cát-nết-sa tiến lại, kêu to: “Sa-đơ-rắc, Mê-sác, và A-bết-nê-gô, đầy tớ của Đức Chúa Trời Chí Cao! Hãy bước ra đây!” Sa-đơ-rắc, Mê-sác, và A-bết-nê-gô từ lò lửa bước ra.

27Các thượng thư, quan chỉ huy, tổng trấn, và quân sư xúm lại khám xét ba người ấy, nhưng đều nhìn nhận rằng ngọn lửa chẳng đốt được thân thể của ba người, một sợi tóc cũng không sém, một chiếc áo cũng không nám, cả đến mùi khét của lò lửa cũng không dính vào thân thể họ!

28Vua Nê-bu-cát-nết-sa tuyên bố: “Hãy ngợi tôn Đức Chúa Trời của Sa-đơ-rắc, Mê-sác, và A-bết-nê-gô! Chúa đã sai thiên sứ giải cứu đầy tớ Ngài là những người tin cậy Ngài, không sợ lệnh vua, và sẵn sàng hy sinh tính mạngđể giữ vững lập trường, không phục vụ và thờ lạy thần nào khác ngoài Đức Chúa Trời của mình.

29Vì thế, ta ra nghị định này: Trong tất cả các dân tộc, quốc gia, ngôn ngữ, nếu người nào xúc phạm đến Đức Chúa Trời của Sa-đơ-rắc, Mê-sác, và A-bết-nê-gô sẽ bị xé ra từng mảnh, nhà cửa nó sẽ trở thành đống gạch đổ nát. Vì không có thần nào khác có quyền giải cứu như thế này!”

30Vua thăng chức cho Sa-đơ-rắc, Mê-sác, và A-bết-nê-gô trong tỉnh Ba-by-lôn.

1Nebuchadnezzar the king made an image of gold, whose height was threescore cubits, and the breadth thereof six cubits: he set it up in the plain of Dura, in the province of Babylon.

2Then Nebuchadnezzar the king sent to gather together the princes, the governors, and the captains, the judges, the treasurers, the counsellors, the sheriffs, and all the rulers of the provinces, to come to the dedication of the image which Nebuchadnezzar the king had set up.

3Then the princes, the governors, and captains, the judges, the treasurers, the counsellors, the sheriffs, and all the rulers of the provinces, were gathered together unto the dedication of the image that Nebuchadnezzar the king had set up; and they stood before the image that Nebuchadnezzar had set up.

4Then an herald cried aloud, To you it is commanded, O people, nations, and languages,

5That at what time ye hear the sound of the cornet, flute, harp, sackbut, psaltery, dulcimer, and all kinds of musick, ye fall down and worship the golden image that Nebuchadnezzar the king hath set up:

6And whoso falleth not down and worshippeth shall the same hour be cast into the midst of a burning fiery furnace.

7Therefore at that time, when all the people heard the sound of the cornet, flute, harp, sackbut, psaltery, and all kinds of musick, all the people, the nations, and the languages, fell down and worshipped the golden image that Nebuchadnezzar the king had set up.

8¶ Wherefore at that time certain Chaldeans came near, and accused the Jews.

9They spake and said to the king Nebuchadnezzar, O king, live for ever.

10Thou, O king, hast made a decree, that every man that shall hear the sound of the cornet, flute, harp, sackbut, psaltery, and dulcimer, and all kinds of musick, shall fall down and worship the golden image:

11And whoso falleth not down and worshippeth, that he should be cast into the midst of a burning fiery furnace.

12There are certain Jews whom thou hast set over the affairs of the province of Babylon, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego; these men, O king, have not regarded thee: they serve not thy gods, nor worship the golden image which thou hast set up.

13¶ Then Nebuchadnezzar in his rage and fury commanded to bring Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego. Then they brought these men before the king.

14Nebuchadnezzar spake and said unto them, Is it true, O Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego, do not ye serve my gods, nor worship the golden image which I have set up?

15Now if ye be ready that at what time ye hear the sound of the cornet, flute, harp, sackbut, psaltery, and dulcimer, and all kinds of musick, ye fall down and worship the image which I have made; well: but if ye worship not, ye shall be cast the same hour into the midst of a burning fiery furnace; and who is that God that shall deliver you out of my hands?

16Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego, answered and said to the king, O Nebuchadnezzar, we are not careful to answer thee in this matter.

17If it be so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and he will deliver us out of thine hand, O king.

18But if not, be it known unto thee, O king, that we will not serve thy gods, nor worship the golden image which thou hast set up.

19¶ Then was Nebuchadnezzar full of fury, and the form of his visage was changed against Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego: therefore he spake, and commanded that they should heat the furnace one seven times more than it was wont to be heated.

20And he commanded the most mighty men that were in his army to bind Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego, and to cast them into the burning fiery furnace.

21Then these men were bound in their coats, their hosen, and their hats, and their other garments, and were cast into the midst of the burning fiery furnace.

22Therefore because the king’s commandment was urgent, and the furnace exceeding hot, the flame of the fire slew those men that took up Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego.

23And these three men, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego, fell down bound into the midst of the burning fiery furnace.

24Then Nebuchadnezzar the king was astonied, and rose up in haste, and spake, and said unto his counsellors, Did not we cast three men bound into the midst of the fire? They answered and said unto the king, True, O king.

25He answered and said, Lo, I see four men loose, walking in the midst of the fire, and they have no hurt; and the form of the fourth is like the Son of God.

26¶ Then Nebuchadnezzar came near to the mouth of the burning fiery furnace, and spake, and said, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego, ye servants of the most high God, come forth, and come hither. Then Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego, came forth of the midst of the fire.

27And the princes, governors, and captains, and the king’s counsellors, being gathered together, saw these men, upon whose bodies the fire had no power, nor was an hair of their head singed, neither were their coats changed, nor the smell of fire had passed on them.

28Then Nebuchadnezzar spake, and said, Blessed be the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego, who hath sent his angel, and delivered his servants that trusted in him, and have changed the king’s word, and yielded their bodies, that they might not serve nor worship any god, except their own God.

29Therefore I make a decree, That every people, nation, and language, which speak any thing amiss against the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego, shall be cut in pieces, and their houses shall be made a dunghill: because there is no other God that can deliver after this sort.

30Then the king promoted Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego, in the province of Babylon.
