1Con cái Ít-ra-en đang sống ở Giu-đê nghe biết tất cả những gì Hô-lô-phéc-nê, đại tướng chỉ huy của Na-bu-cô-đô-nô-xo, vua nước Át-sua, đã làm đối với các dân và cách ông đã cướp bóc tất cả đền thờ của họ, rồi cho tiêu huỷ các đền thờ ấy như thế nào.

2Vì thế, khi nghe tin ông đến, họ sợ hãi, sợ hãi vô cùng và lo lắng cho thành Giê-ru-sa-lem cũng như Đền Thờ của Đức Chúa là Thiên Chúa của họ ;

4Vì vậy, họ sai sứ giả đến khắp lãnh thổ Sa-ma-ri, đến Cô-na, Bết Khô-rôn, Ben-ma-in, Giê-ri-khô, và đến Khô-ba, Ai-xô-ra và thung lũng Sa-lem.

5Họ chiếm trước tất cả các đỉnh núi cao, xây tường đắp luỹ chung quanh làng mạc ở các nơi ấy và chuẩn bị lương thực để đề phòng chiến tranh, vì đồng ruộng của họ vừa mới gặt hái xong.

6Thượng tế Giô-gia-kim bấy giờ đang ở Giê-ru-sa-lem, viết cho các dân cư ở Bai-ty-lu-a và Bai-tô-mét-tha-im ; thành này nằm trước mặt Ét-rê-lon, đối diện với đồng bằng gần Đô-tha-im.

7Ông bảo họ trấn giữ các đường đèo lên núi, vì phải qua các ngả đó mới vào được xứ Giu-đê ; đàng khác cũng dễ chặn những ai tiến lên, vì lối đi quá hẹp, chỉ đủ cho hai người thôi.

8Con cái Ít-ra-en làm theo lệnh của thượng tế Giô-gia-kim và của hội đồng kỳ mục toàn dân Ít-ra-en đặt trụ sở tại Giê-ru-sa-lem.

9Hết mọi người nam trong dân Ít-ra-en đều tha thiết kêu lên cùng Thiên Chúa và sốt sắng ăn chay.

10Họ cùng với vợ con, súc vật, ngoại kiều, người làm công và cả nô lệ mua được, tất cả đều mặc áo vải thô.

11Hết mọi người nam trong dân Ít-ra-en cùng với vợ con cư ngụ ở Giê-ru-sa-lem đều phủ phục trước Đền Thờ, rắc tro lên đầu, mặc áo vải thô ra trước nhan Đức Chúa.

12Họ trải vải thô lên cả bàn thờ. Họ đồng tâm khẩn khoản kêu lên cùng Thiên Chúa Ít-ra-en, xin Người đừng để con họ bị cướp bóc, vợ họ bị bắt đi, các thành trong phần gia nghiệp của họ bị tiêu huỷ, Đền Thờ ra ô uế, bị nguyền rủa và trở nên trò đùa cho dân ngoại.

13Dân chúng ăn chay nhiều ngày trong toàn xứ Giu-đê và ở Giê-ru-sa-lem trước Đền Thờ của Đức Chúa toàn năng.

14Thượng tế Giô-gia-kim và tất cả những người phục vụ trước nhan Đức Chúa, tức là các tư tế và các thừa tác viên của Đức Chúa, đều mặc áo vải thô, dâng lễ vật toàn thiêu thường tiến, lễ vật khấn hứa và lễ vật tự nguyện của dân.

15Họ rắc tro lên mũ tế và hết sức kêu cầu cùng Đức Chúa, xin Người thương thăm viếng toàn thể nhà Ít-ra-en.

1Then the children of Israel, who dwelt in the land of Juda, hearing these things, were exceedingly afraid of him.

2Dread and horror seized upon their minds, lest he should do the same to Jerusalem and to the temple of the Lord, that he had done to other cities and their temples.

3And they sent into all Samaria round about, as far as Jericho, and seized upon all the tops of the mountains:

4And they compassed their towns with walls, and gathered together corn for provision for war.

5And Eliachim the priest wrote to all that were over against Esdrelon, which faceth the great plain near Dothain, and to all by whom there might be a passage of way, that they should take possession of the ascents of the mountains, by which there might be any way to Jerusalem, and should keep watch where the way was narrow between the mountains.

6And the children of Israel did as the priest of the Lord Eliachim had appointed them,

7And all the people cried to the Lord with great earnestness, and they humbled their souls in fastings, and prayers, both they and their wives.

8And the priests put on haircloths, and they caused the little children to lie prostrate before the temple of the Lord, and the altar of the Lord they covered with haircloth.

9And they cried to the Lord the God of Israel with one accord, that their children might not be made a prey, and their wives carried off, and their cities destroyed, and their holy things profaned, and that they might not be made a reproach to the Gentiles.

10Then Eliachim the high priest of the Lord went about all Israel and spoke to them,

11Saying: Know ye that the Lord will hear your prayers, if you continue with perseverance in fastings and prayers in the sight of the Lord.

12Remember Moses the servant of the Lord, who overcame Amalec that trusted in his own strength, and in his power, and in his army, and in his shields, and in his chariots, and in his horsemen, not by fighting with the sword, but by holy prayers:

13So shall all the enemies of Israel be, if you persevere in this work which you have begun.

14So they being moved by this exhortation of his, prayed to the Lord, and continued in the sight of the Lord.

15So that even they who offered the holocausts to the Lord, offered the sacrifices to the Lord girded with haircloths, and with ashes upon their head.

16And they all begged of God with all their heart, that he would visit his people Israel.
