2Tại Khép-rôn, vua Đa-vít đã sinh được những người con trai : con đầu lòng là Am-nôn, do bà A-khi-nô-am người Gít-rơ-en ;

3người thứ hai là Ki-láp, do bà A-vi-ga-gin, vợ ông Na-van người Các-men ; người thứ ba là Áp-sa-lôm, do bà Ma-a-kha, ái nữ của Tan-mai, vua Gơ-sua ;

4người thứ tư là A-đô-ni-gia, do bà Khác-ghít ; người thứ năm là Sơ-phát-gia, do bà A-vi-tan ;

5người thứ sáu là Gít-rơ-am, do bà Éc-la, vợ vua Đa-vít. Đó là những người con trai vua Đa-vít đã sinh được tại Khép-rôn.

6Trong khi có chiến tranh giữa nhà Sa-un và nhà Đa-vít, ông Áp-ne củng cố địa vị trong nhà Sa-un.

7Vua Sa-un trước kia có người tỳ thiếp tên là Rít-pa, con gái ông Ai-gia. Vua Ít-bô-sét nói với ông Áp-ne : “Tại sao ông đi lại với tỳ thiếp của cha tôi ?”

8Ông Áp-ne giận lắm vì những lời vua Ít-bô-sét và nói : “Tôi là đầu chó của Giu-đa sao ? Hôm nay tôi lấy tình nghĩa mà đối xử với nhà của vua Sa-un, cha ngài, với anh em của người và với các bạn của người ; tôi đã không để ngài rơi vào tay Đa-vít. Thế mà hôm nay ngài lại bắt lỗi tôi về chuyện một người đàn bà !

9Xin Thiên Chúa phạt Áp-ne thế này và còn thêm thế kia nữa, nếu tôi không làm cho Đa-vít điều ĐỨC CHÚA đã thề với ông ấy,

10là cất vương quyền khỏi nhà Sa-un và thiết lập ngai vàng của Đa-vít trên Ít-ra-en và trên Giu-đa, từ Đan đến Bơ-e Se-va !”

11Vua Ít-bô-sét không thể đáp lại ông Áp-ne một lời, vì vua sợ ông.

12Ông Áp-ne sai sứ giả thay mặt mình đến nói với vua Đa-vít : “Đất này thuộc về ai ?” Ông nói : “Ngài hãy lập giao ước với tôi, tôi sẽ giúp ngài một tay để làm cho toàn thể Ít-ra-en quay về với ngài.”

13Vua đáp : “Tốt. Tôi sẽ lập giao ước với ông. Tôi chỉ xin ông một điều : ông sẽ không được ra mắt tôi, nếu ông không đem đến cho tôi bà Mi-khan, con gái vua Sa-un, khi ông đến ra mắt tôi.”

14Vua Đa-vít sai sứ giả đến nói với vua Ít-bô-sét, con vua Sa-un : “Hãy trả lại tôi vợ tôi là Mi-khan, người tôi đã nộp một trăm bao quy đầu người Phi-li-tinh để cưới.”

15Vua Ít-bô-sét sai người đến nhà chồng bà là ông Pan-ti-ên, con ông La-gít, để đem bà về.

16Chồng bà đi với bà ; ông vừa đi theo vừa khóc, cho đến Ba-khu-rim. Ông Áp-ne bảo ông ấy : “Thôi, về đi !” Ông ấy trở về.

17Ông Áp-ne ngỏ lời với các kỳ mục Ít-ra-en : “Đã từ lâu, anh em ao ước được ông Đa-vít làm vua.

18Vậy bây giờ anh em hãy hành động, vì ĐỨC CHÚA đã phán về ông Đa-vít rằng : ‘Chính nhờ tay Đa-vít, tôi tớ Ta, mà Ta sẽ cứu Ít-ra-en, dân Ta, khỏi tay người Phi-li-tinh và khỏi tay mọi kẻ thù của nó.’”

19Ông Áp-ne cũng đã nói cho người Ben-gia-min nghe. Rồi ông Áp-ne đi Khép-rôn nói cho vua Đa-vít nghe tất cả những gì Ít-ra-en và toàn thể nhà Ben-gia-min coi là tốt.

20Ông Áp-ne đến với vua Đa-vít tại Khép-rôn, có hai mươi người cùng đi với ông. Vua Đa-vít làm tiệc đãi ông Áp-ne và những người cùng đi với ông.

21Ông Áp-ne nói với ông Đa-vít : “Tôi sẽ lên đường đi tập hợp toàn thể Ít-ra-en về cho đức vua là chúa thượng tôi. Họ sẽ lập giao ước với ngài và ngài sẽ làm vua cai trị mọi nơi lòng ngài ao ước.” Vua Đa-vít cho ông Áp-ne về, và ông ra đi bình an.

22Trong khi đó, các bề tôi vua Đa-vít cùng với ông Giô-áp đi hành quân trở về, đem theo chiến lợi phẩm rất lớn. Ông Áp-ne không còn ở với vua Đa-vít tại Khép-rôn, vì vua đã cho ông về, và ông đã ra đi bình an.

23Khi ông Giô-áp và toàn thể quân đội cùng đi với ông trở về, người ta báo tin cho ông Giô-áp rằng : “Ông Áp-ne, con ông Ne, đã đến gặp nhà vua. Nhà vua đã cho ông ấy về, và ông đã ra đi bình an.”

24Ông Giô-áp đến gặp vua và nói : “Ngài đã làm gì thế ? Kìa, Áp-ne đã đến gặp ngài. Tại sao ngài cho nó về và nó đã ra đi như vậy ?

25Ngài thừa biết Áp-ne, con ông Ne : nó đến chính là để lừa dối ngài, để biết đường đi nước bước của ngài, và để biết tất cả những gì ngài làm !”

26Ở nhà vua Đa-vít ra, ông Giô-áp sai người chạy theo ông Áp-ne. Tới bể nước Xi-ra, họ mời ông trở lại, nhưng vua Đa-vít không biết gì.

27Khi ông Áp-ne về đến Khép-rôn, ông Giô-áp kéo riêng ông vào phía trong cửa thành, như để nói chuyện thân mật với ông. Tại đó ông Giô-áp đâm vào bụng ông ấy, và ông ấy đã chết để trả nợ máu ông A-xa-hên, em ông Giô-áp.

28Sau đó, vua Đa-vít nghe biết sự việc thì nói : “Ta và vương quốc của ta mãi mãi vô can trước mặt ĐỨC CHÚA về máu ông Áp-ne, con ông Ne.

29Ước gì máu đó đổ xuống đầu Giô-áp và xuống toàn thể nhà cha nó ! Ước gì trong nhà Giô-áp không bao giờ hết người mắc bệnh lậu hay bệnh phong, người chỉ biết cầm con suốt, người ngã gục dưới lưỡi gươm hay người thiếu bánh ăn !”

30Ông Giô-áp và ông A-vi-sai, anh ông, đã giết ông Áp-ne, bởi vì ông này đã giết ông A-xa-hên, em của họ, trong trận Ghíp-ôn.

31Vua Đa-vít nói với ông Giô-áp và toàn thể quân binh theo ông : “Hãy xé áo mình ra, quấn áo vải thô và cử hành tang lễ cho ông Áp-ne.” Vua Đa-vít theo sau đòn cáng.

32Người ta chôn cất ông Áp-ne tại Khép-rôn. Vua oà lên khóc bên mộ ông Áp-ne, và toàn dân cũng khóc.

33“Há Áp-ne lại phải chết cái chết của một thằng ngu ?

34Toàn dân lại khóc ông.

35Toàn dân đến ép vua Đa-vít ăn đôi chút khi còn ban ngày. Nhưng vua Đa-vít thề rằng : “Xin Thiên Chúa phạt tôi thế này và còn thêm thế kia nữa, nếu tôi nếm bánh hay bất cứ cái gì trước khi mặt trời lặn !”

36Toàn dân ghi nhận điều đó và tán thành, như toàn dân vẫn tán thành mọi điều vua làm.

37Hôm ấy, toàn dân và toàn thể Ít-ra-en biết rằng không phải do lệnh vua mà ông Áp-ne, con ông Ne, đã bị giết.

38Vua nói với triều thần : “Các ngươi không biết rằng, hôm nay, một vị tướng, một vĩ nhân đã ngã gục tại Ít-ra-en sao ?

39Phần ta, hôm nay, ta còn yếu thế, tuy đã được xức dầu phong vương, nhưng những người này là các con bà Xơ-ru-gia, thì cứng cỏi hơn ta. Xin ĐỨC CHÚA đáp trả kẻ làm điều ác, xứng với lòng độc ác của nó !”

1And the war is long between the house of Saul and the house of David, and David is going on and [is] strong, and the house of Saul are going on and [are] weak.

2And there are born to David sons in Hebron, and his first-born is Amnon, of Ahinoam the Jezreelitess,

3and his second [is] Chileab, of Abigail wife of Nabal the Carmelite, and the third [is] Absalom son of Maacah daughter of Talmai king of Geshur,

4and the fourth [is] Adonijah son of Haggith, and the fifth [is] Shephatiah son of Abital,

5and the sixth [is] Ithream, of Eglah wife of David; these have been born to David in Hebron.

6And it cometh to pass, in the war being between the house of Saul and the house of David, that Abner hath been strengthening himself in the house of Saul,

7and Saul hath a concubine, and her name [is] Rizpah daughter of Aiah, and [Ish-Bosheth] saith unto Abner, 'Wherefore hast thou gone in unto the concubine of my father?'

8And it is displeasing to Abner exceedingly, because of the words of Ish-Bosheth, and he saith, 'The head of a dog [am] I — that in reference to Judah to-day I do kindness with the house of Saul thy father, unto his brethren, and unto his friends, and have not delivered thee into the hand of David — that thou chargest against me iniquity concerning the woman to-day?

9thus doth God to Abner, and thus He doth add to him, surely as Jehovah hath sworn to David — surely so I do to him:

10to cause the kingdom to pass over from the house of Saul, and to raise up the throne of David over Israel, and over Judah, from Dan even unto Beer-Sheba.'

11And he is not able any more to turn back Abner a word, because of his fearing him.

12And Abner sendeth messengers unto David for himself, saying, 'Whose [is] the land?' saying, 'Make thy covenant with me, and lo, my hand [is] with thee, to bring round unto thee all Israel.'

13And he saith, 'Good — I make with thee a covenant; only, one thing I am asking of thee, that is, Thou dost not see my face, except thou dost first bring in Michal, daughter of Saul in thy coming into see my face.'

14And David sendeth messengers unto Ish-Bosheth son of Saul, saying, 'Give up my wife Michal, whom I betrothed to myself with a hundred foreskins of the Philistines.'

15And Ish-Bosheth sendeth, and taketh her from a man, from Phaltiel son of Laish,

16and her husband goeth with her, going on and weeping behind her, unto Bahurim, and Abner saith unto him, 'Go, turn back;' and he turneth back.

17And the word of Abner was with the elders of Israel, saying, 'Heretofore ye have been seeking David for king over you,

18and now, do [it], for Jehovah hath spoken of David saying, By the hand of David my servant — to save My people Israel out of the hand of the Philistines, and out of the hand of all their enemies.'

19And Abner speaketh also in the ears of Benjamin, and Abner goeth also to speak in the ears of David in Hebron all that [is] good in the eyes of Israel, and in the eyes of all the house of Benjamin,

20and Abner cometh in unto David, to Hebron, and with him twenty men, and David maketh for Abner, and for the men who [are] with him, a banquet.

21And Abner saith unto David, 'I arise, and go, and gather unto my lord the king the whole of Israel, and they make with thee a covenant, and thou hast reigned over all that thy soul desireth;' and David sendeth away Abner, and he goeth in peace.

22And lo, the servants of David, and Joab, have come from the troop, and much spoil have brought with them, and Abner is not with David in Hebron, for he hath sent him away, and he goeth in peace;

23and Joab and all the host that [is] with him have come, and they declare to Joab, saying, 'Abner son of Ner hath come unto the king, and he sendeth him away, and he goeth in peace.'

24And Joab cometh unto the king, and saith, 'What hast thou done? lo, Abner hath come unto thee! why [is] this — thou hast sent him away, and he is really gone?

25Thou hast known Abner son of Ner, that to deceive thee he came, and to know thy going out and thy coming in, and to know all that thou art doing.'

26And Joab goeth out from David, and sendeth messengers after Abner, and they bring him back from the well of Sirah, and David knew not.

27And Abner turneth back to Hebron, and Joab turneth him aside unto the midst of the gate to speak with him quietly, and smiteth him there in the fifth [rib] — and he dieth — for the blood of Asahel his brother.

28And David heareth afterwards and saith, 'Acquitted [am] I, and my kingdom, by Jehovah, unto the age, from the blood of Abner son of Ner;

29it doth stay on the head of Joab, and on all the house of his father, and there is not cut off from the house of Joab one having an issue, and leprous, and laying hold on a staff, and falling by a sword, and lacking bread.'

30And Joab and Abishai his brother slew Abner because that he put to death Asahel their brother, in Gibeon, in battle.

31And David saith unto Joab, and unto all the people who [are] with him, 'Rend your garments, and gird on sackcloth, and mourn before Abner;' and king David is going after the bier.

32And they bury Abner in Hebron, and the king lifteth up his voice, and weepeth at the grave of Abner, and all the people weep;

33and the king lamenteth for Abner, and saith: — 'As the death of a fool doth Abner die?

34Thy hands not bound, And thy feet to fetters not brought nigh! As one falling before sons of evil — Thou hast fallen!' and all the people add to weep over him.

35And all the people come to cause David to eat bread while yet day, and David sweareth, saying, 'Thus doth God to me, and thus He doth add, for — before the going in of the sun, I taste no bread or any other thing.'

36And all the people have discerned [it], and it is good in their eyes, as all that the king hath done is good in the eyes of all the people;

37and all the people know, even all Israel, in that day, that it hath not been from the king — to put to death Abner son of Ner.

38And the king saith unto his servants, 'Do ye not know that a prince and a great one hath fallen this day in Israel?

39and I to-day [am] tender, and an anointed king: and these men, sons of Zeruiah, [are] too hard for me; Jehovah doth recompense to the doer of the evil according to his evil.'
