1Vua A-kháp kể cho I-de-ven nghe mọi chuyện ông Ê-li-a đã làm và tất cả sự việc ông dùng gươm hạ sát hết các ngôn sứ.

2Bà I-de-ven liền sai sứ giả đến nói với ông Ê-li-a rằng : “Xin các thần minh làm cho ta thế này, và còn hơn thế nữa, nếu giờ này sáng mai ta không biến mạng ngươi ra như mạng một trong các người ấy.”

3Thấy vậy, ông Ê-li-a trỗi dậy, ra đi để thoát mạng. Khi tới Bơ-e Se-va thuộc Giu-đa, ông để đứa tiểu đồng lại đấy,

4còn ông thì đi một ngày đường trong sa mạc. Ông đến ngồi dưới gốc một cây kim tước. Ông xin cho được chết và nói : “Lạy ĐỨC CHÚA, đủ rồi ! Bây giờ xin Chúa lấy mạng sống con đi, vì con chẳng hơn gì cha ông của con.”

5Rồi ông nằm dưới cây kim tước đó và thiếp đi. Nhưng này có một thiên sứ đụng vào người ông và nói : “Dậy mà ăn !”

6Ông đưa mắt nhìn thì thấy ở phía đầu ông có một chiếc bánh nướng trên những hòn đá nung và một hũ nước. Ông ăn bánh, uống nước, rồi lại nằm xuống.

7Thiên sứ của ĐỨC CHÚA trở lại lần nữa, đụng vào người ông và nói : “Dậy mà ăn, vì ngươi còn phải đi đường xa.”

8Ông dậy, ăn bánh và uống nước. Rồi nhờ lương thực ấy bổ dưỡng, ông đi suốt bốn mươi ngày, bốn mươi đêm tới Khô-rếp, là núi của Thiên Chúa.

9Ông vào một cái hang và nghỉ đêm tại đó. Có lời ĐỨC CHÚA phán với ông : “Ê-li-a, ngươi làm gì ở đây ?”

10Ông thưa : “Lòng nhiệt thành đối với ĐỨC CHÚA, Thiên Chúa các đạo binh, nung nấu con, vì con cái Ít-ra-en đã bỏ giao ước với Ngài, phá huỷ bàn thờ, dùng gươm sát hại các ngôn sứ của Ngài. Chỉ còn sót lại một mình con mà họ đang lùng bắt để lấy mạng sống con.”

11Người nói với ông : “Hãy ra ngoài và đứng trên núi trước mặt ĐỨC CHÚA. Kìa ĐỨC CHÚA đang đi qua.” Gió to bão lớn xẻ núi non, đập vỡ đá tảng trước nhan ĐỨC CHÚA, nhưng ĐỨC CHÚA không ở trong cơn gió bão. Sau đó là động đất, nhưng ĐỨC CHÚA không ở trong trận động đất.

12Sau động đất là lửa, nhưng ĐỨC CHÚA cũng không ở trong lửa. Sau lửa có tiếng gió hiu hiu.

13Vừa nghe tiếng đó, ông Ê-li-a lấy áo choàng che mặt, rồi ra ngoài đứng ở cửa hang. Bấy giờ có tiếng hỏi ông : “Ê-li-a, ngươi làm gì ở đây ?”

14Ông thưa : “Lòng nhiệt thành đối với ĐỨC CHÚA, Thiên Chúa các đạo binh, nung nấu con, vì con cái Ít-ra-en đã bỏ giao ước với Ngài, phá huỷ bàn thờ, dùng gươm sát hại các ngôn sứ của Ngài. Chỉ sót lại một mình con mà họ đang lùng bắt để lấy mạng con.”

15ĐỨC CHÚA phán với ông : “Ngươi hãy đi con đường ngươi đã đi trước, qua sa mạc cho tới Đa-mát mà về. Tới nơi, ngươi sẽ xức dầu phong Kha-da-ên làm vua A-ram ;

16còn Giê-hu con của Nim-si, ngươi sẽ xức dầu tấn phong nó làm vua Ít-ra-en. Ê-li-sa con Sa-phát, người A-vên Mơ-khô-la, ngươi sẽ xức dầu tấn phong nó làm ngôn sứ thay cho ngươi.

17Kẻ thoát gươm của Kha-da-ên sẽ bị Giê-hu giết ; người thoát tay Giê-hu sẽ bị Ê-li-sa giết.

18Nhưng Ta, Ta sẽ dành ra cho Ta bảy nghìn người trong Ít-ra-en : tất cả những kẻ đã không hề bái gối trước Ba-an, những môi miệng không hề hôn kính nó.”

19Ông Ê-li-a bỏ đó ra đi và gặp ông Ê-li-sa là con ông Sa-phát đang cày ruộng ; trước mặt ông Ê-li-sa có mười hai cặp bò ; chính ông thì đi theo cặp thứ mười hai. Ông Ê-li-a đi ngang qua, ném tấm áo choàng của mình lên người ông Ê-li-sa.

20Ông này liền để bò lại, chạy theo ông Ê-li-a và nói : “Xin cho con về hôn cha mẹ để từ giã, rồi con sẽ đi theo ông.” Ông Ê-li-a trả lời : “Cứ về đi ! Thầy có làm gì anh đâu ?”

21Ông Ê-li-sa bỏ ông Ê-li-a mà về, bắt cặp bò giết làm lễ tế, lấy cày làm củi nấu thịt đãi người nhà. Rồi ông đứng dậy, đi theo ông Ê-li-a và phục vụ ông.

1And Achab told Jezabel all that Elias had done, and how he had slain all the prophets with the sword.

2And Jezabel sent a messenger to Elias, saying: Such and such things may the gods do to me, and add still more, if by this hour tomorrow I make not thy life as the life of one of them.

3Then Elias was afraid, and rising up he went whithersoever he had a mind: and he came to Bersabee of Juda, and left his servant there,

4And he went forward, one day’s journey into the desert. And when he was there, and sat under a juniper tree, he requested for his soul that he might die, and said: It is enough for me, Lord, take away my soul: for I am no better than my fathers.

5And he cast himself down, and slept in the shadow of the juniper tree: and behold an angel of the Lord touched him, and said to him: Arise and eat.

6He looked, and behold there was at his head a hearth cake, and a vessel of water: and he ate and drank, and he fell asleep again.

7And the angel of the Lord came again the second time, and touched him, and said to him: Arise, eat: for thou hast yet a great way to go.

8And he arose, and ate, and drank, and walked in the strength of that food forty days and forty nights, unto the mount of God, Horeb.

9And when he was come thither, he abode in a cave: and behold the word of the Lord came unto him, and he said to him: What dost thou here, Elias?

10And he answered: With zeal have I been zealous for the Lord God of hosts: for the children of Israel have forsaken thy covenant: they have thrown down thy altars, they have slain thy prophets with the sword, and I alone am left, and they seek my life to take it away.

11And he said to him: Go forth, and stand upon the mount before the Lord: and behold the Lord passeth, and a great and strong wind before the Lord over throwing the mountains, and breaking the rocks in pieces: the Lord is not in the wind, and after the wind an earthquake: the Lord is not in the earthquake.

12And after the earthquake a fire: the Lord is not in the fire, and after the fire a whistling of a gentle air.

13And when Elias heard it, he covered his face with his mantle, and coming forth stood in the entering in of the cave, and behold a voice unto him, saying: What dost thou here, Elias? And he answered:

14With zeal have I been zealous for the Lord God of hosts: because the children of Israel have forsaken thy covenant: they have destroyed thy altars, they have slain thy prophets with the sword, and I alone am left, and they seek my life to take it away.

15And the Lord said to him: Go, and return on thy way through the desert to Damascus: and when thou art come thither, thou shalt anoint Hazael to be king over Syria.

16And thou shalt anoint Jehu the son of Namsi to be king over Israel: and Eliseus the son of Saphat, of Abelmeula, thou shalt anoint to be prophet in thy room.

17And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall escape the sword of Hazael, shall be slain by Jehu: and whosoever shall escape the sword of Jehu, shall be slain by Eliseus.

18And I will leave me seven thousand men in Israel, whose knees have not been bowed before Baal, and every mouth that hath not worshipped him kissing the hands.

19And Elias departing from thence, found Eliseus the son of Saphat, ploughing with twelve yoke of oxen: and he was one of them that were ploughing with twelve yoke of oxen: and when Elias came up to him, he cast his mantle upon him.

20And he forthwith left the oxen and ran after Elias, and said: Let me, I pray thee, kiss my father and my mother, and then I will follow thee. And he said to him: Go, and return back: for that which was my part, I have done to thee.

21And returning back from him, he took a yoke of oxen, and killed them, and boiled the flesh with the plough of the oxen, and gave to the people, and they ate: and rising up he went away, and followed Elias, and ministered to him.
